A multidimensional Szemeredi theorem for Hardy sequences of different growth

We prove a variant of the multidimensional polynomial Szemerédi theorem of Bergelson and Leibman where one replaces polynomial sequences with other sparse sequences defined by functions that belong to some Hardy field and satisfy certain growth conditions. We do this by studying the limiting behavior of the corresponding multiple ergodic averages and obtaining a simple limit formula. A consequence of this formula in topological dynamics shows denseness of certain orbits when the iterates are restricted to suitably chosen sparse subsequences. Another consequence is that every syndetic set of integers contains certain non-shift invariant patterns, and every finite coloring of $\N$, with each color class a syndetic set, contains certain polychromatic patterns, results very particular to our non-polynomial setup.

The polynomial multidimensional Szemerédi Theorem along shifted primes

If $\vf_1, ... \vf_m\colon\Z\to\Z^\ell$ are polynomials with zero constant terms and $E\subset\Z^\ell$ has positive upper Banach density, then we show that the set $E\cap (E-\vf_1(p-1))\cap\...\cap (E-\vf_m(p-1))$ is nonempty for some prime $p$. We also prove mean convergence for the associated averages along the prime numbers, conditional to analogous convergence results along the full integers. This generalizes earlier results of the authors, of Wooley and Ziegler, and of Bergelson, Leibman and Ziegler.

Random Sequences and Pointwise Convergence of Multiple Ergodic Averages

We prove pointwise convergence, as $N\to \infty$, for the multiple ergodic averages $\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N f(T^nx)\cdot g(S^{a_n}x)$, where $T$ and $S$ are commuting measure preserving transformations, and $a_n$ is a random version of the sequence $[n^c]$ for some appropriate $c>1$. We also prove similar mean convergence results for averages of the form $\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N f(T^{a_n}x)\cdot g(S^{a_n}x)$, as well as pointwise results when $T$ and $S$ are powers of the same transformation. The deterministic versions of these results, where one replaces $a_n$ with $[n^c]$, remain open, and we hope that our method will indicate a fruitful way to approach these problems as well.

Pointwise convergence for cubic and polynomial ergodic averages of non-commuting transformations

We study the limiting behavior of multiple ergodic averages involving several not necessarily commuting measure preserving transformations. We work on two types of averages, one that uses iterates along combinatorial parallelepipeds, and another that uses iterates along shifted polynomials. We prove pointwise convergence in both cases, thus answering a question of I.Assani in the former case, and extending results of B.Host-B.Kra and A.Leibman in the latter case. Our argument is based on some elementary uniformity estimates of general bounded sequences, decomposition results in ergodic theory, and equidistribution results on nilmanifolds.

Powers of sequences and convergence of ergodic averages

A sequence $(s_n)$ of integers is good for the mean ergodic theorem if for each invertible measure preserving system $(X,\mathcal{B},μ,T)$ and any bounded measurable function $f$, the averages $ \frac1N \sum_{n=1}^N f(T^{s_n}x)$ converge in the $L^2$ norm. We construct a sequence $(s_n)$ that is good for the mean ergodic theorem, but the sequence $(s_n^2)$ is not. Furthermore, we show that for any set of bad exponents $B$, there is a sequence $(s_n)$ where $(s_n^k)$ is good for the mean ergodic theorem exactly when $k$ is not in $B$. We then extend this result to multiple ergodic averages. We also prove a similar result for pointwise convergence of single ergodic averages.

Powers of sequences and recurrence

We study recurrence, and multiple recurrence, properties along the $k$-th powers of a given set of integers. We show that the property of recurrence for some given values of $k$ does not give any constraint on the recurrence for the other powers. This is motivated by similar results in number theory concerning additive basis of natural numbers. Moreover, motivated by a result of Kamae and Mendès-France, that links single recurrence with uniform distribution properties of sequences, we look for an analogous result dealing with higher order recurrence and make a related conjecture.

Multiple ergodic averages for three polynomials and applications

We find the smallest characteristic factor and a limit formula for the multiple ergodic averages associated to any family of three polynomials and polynomial families of the form $\{l_1p,l_2p,...,l_kp\}$. We then derive several multiple recurrence results and combinatorial implications, including an answer to a question of Brown, Graham, and Landman, and a generalization of the Polynomial Szemerédi Theorem of Bergelson and Leibman for families of three polynomials with not necessarily zero constant term. We also simplify and generalize a recent result of Bergelson, Host, and Kra, showing that for all $ε>0$ and every subset of the integers $Λ$ the set $$ \big\{n\in\N\colon d^*\big(Λ\cap (Λ+p_1(n))\cap (Λ+p_2(n))\cap (Λ+ p_3(n))\big)>(d^*(Λ))^4-ε\big\} $$ has bounded gaps for "most" choices of integer polynomials $p_1,p_2,p_3$.

Multiple recurence and convergence for sequences related to the prime numbers

For any measure preserving system $(X,\mathcal{X},μ,T)$ and $A\in\mathcal{X}$ with $μ(A)>0$, we show that there exist infinitely many primes $p$ such that $μ\bigl(A\cap T^{-(p-1)}A\cap T^{-2(p-1)}A\bigr) > 0$ (the same holds with $p-1$ replaced by $p+1$). Furthermore, we show the existence of the limit in $L^2(μ)$ of the associated ergodic average over the primes. A key ingredient is a recent result of Green and Tao on the von Mangoldt function. A combinatorial consequence is that every subset of the integers with positive upper density contains an arithmetic progression of length three and common difference of the form $p-1$ (or $p+1$) for some prime $p$.

Ergodic Averages for Independent Polynomials and Applications

Szemerédi's Theorem states that a set of integers with positive upper density contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. Bergelson and Leibman generalized this, showing that sets of integers with positive upper density contain arbitrarily long polynomial configurations; Szemerédi's Theorem corresponds to the linear case of the polynomial theorem. We focus on the case farthest from the linear case, that of rationally independent polynomials. We derive results in ergodic theory and in combinatorics for rationally independent polynomials, showing that their behavior differs sharply from the general situation.

Uniformity in the polynomial Wiener-Wintner theorem

In 1993, E. Lesigne proved a polynomial extension of the Wiener-Wintner ergodic theorem and asked two questions: does this result have a uniform counterpart and can an assumption of total ergodicity be replaced by ergodicity? The purpose of this article is to answer these questions, the first one positively and the second one negatively.

On the degree of regularity of generalized van der Waerden triples

Let $1 \leq a \leq b$ be integers. A triple of the form $(x,ax+d,bx+2d)$, where $x,d$ are positive integers is called an {\em (a,b)-triple}. The {\em degree of regularity} of the family of all $(a,b)$-triples, denoted dor($a,b)$, is the maximum integer $r$ such that every $r$-coloring of $\mathbb{N}$ admits a monochromatic $(a,b)$-triple. We settle, in the affirmative, the conjecture that dor$(a,b) < \infty$ for all $(a,b) \neq (1,1)$. We also disprove the conjecture that dor($a,b) \in \{1,2,\infty\}$ for all $(a,b)$.

Convergence of multiple ergodic averages for some commuting transformations

We prove the $L^{2}$ convergence for the linear multiple ergodic averages of commuting transformations $T_{1}, ..., T_{l}$, assuming that each map $T_i$ and each pair $T_iT_j^{-1}$ is ergodic for $i\neq j$. The limiting behavior of such averages is controlled by a particular factor, which is an inverse limit of nilsystems. As a corollary we show that the limiting behavior of linear multiple ergodic averages is the same for commuting transformations.

The Structure of Strongly Stationary Systems

Motivated by a problem in ergodic Ramsey theory, Furstenberg and Katznelson introduced the notion of strong stationarity, showing that certain recurrence properties hold for arbitrary measure preserving systems if they are valid for strongly stationary ones. We construct some new examples and prove a structure theorem for strongly stationary systems. The building blocks are Bernoulli systems and rotations on nilmanifolds.

Polynomial Averages Converge to the Product of Integrals

We answer a question posed by Vitaly Bergelson, showing that in a totally ergodic system, the average of a product of functions evaluated along polynomial times, with polynomials of pairwise differing degrees, converges in $L^{2}$ to the product of the integrals. Such averages are characterized by nilsystems and so we reduce the problem to one of uniform distribution of polynomial sequences on nilmanifolds.
