The thermal backreaction of a scalar field in de Sitter spacetime

We argue that a scalar field in de Sitter spacetime should feel explicit thermal effects associated with its curvature. Starting from the Bunch-Davies vacuum and a scalar field with small mass compared to the de Sitter curvature, we use the thermo-field dynamics formalism in order to expose these thermal effects. We compute the thermal Wightman function connecting two spacetime points and from it, via the point-splitting regularization technique, the renormalized thermal energy-momentum tensor. We then examine how these corrections affect the de Sitter geometry by solving for the semi-classical backreaction and find that their sign depends on the initial conditions. In order to place our results in context, we compare them to the corresponding 2-loop quantum gravity correction to the cosmological constant derived in [1].

Energy momentum tensor correlators in $\phi^4$ theory II: The spin-two sector

We extend the computation of the C_T charge of the 2-point function of the Energy-Momentum Tensor to 4-loops. We show that C_T decomposes into two sectors, the conformal sector, which encodes the value of the central charge at fixed points and an RG-sector that contains logarithmic and constant corrections proportional to the beta-function. This latter constitutes the main new result of this work and is inaccessible via CFT methods alone. Furthermore, we demonstrate that C_T satisfies an eigenvalue-like equation analogous to that of the spin-0 charge, as discussed in part I, though with a different in general eigenvalue. Finally we present three possible applications.

Energy-Momentum tensor correlators in $\phi^4$ theory I: The spin-zero sector

We revisit the construction of the renormalized trace $\Theta$ of the Energy-Momentum tensor in the four-dimensional $\lambda\phi^4$ theory, using dimensional regularization in $d=4-\ve$ dimensions. We first construct several basic correlators such as $\braket{\phi^2 \phi\phi}$, $\braket{\phi^4 \phi \phi}$ to order $\lambda^2$ and from these the correlators $\braket{K_I \phi \phi}$ and $\braket{K_I K_J}$ with $K_I$ the basis of dimension $d$ operators. We then match the limit of their expressions on the Wilson-Fisher fixed point to the corresponding expressions obtained in Conformal Field Theory. Then, using the 3-point function $\braket{\Theta\phi\phi}$, we construct the operator $\Theta$ as a certain linear combination of the basis operators, using the requirements that $\Theta$ should vanish on the fixed point and that it should have zero anomalous dimension. Finally, we compute the 2-point function $\braket{\Theta\Theta}$ and we show that it obeys an eigenvalue equation that gives additional information about the internal structure of the Energy-Momentum tensor operator to what is already contained in its Callan-Symanzik equation.

Graph theoretical approach to conformal correlators: The conformal squid

We introduce a discrete, graph theoretic approach to conformal field theory correlators. In a certain basis, called the squid basis, the correlator of N scalar operators can be expressed as the determinant of a natural, conformally covariant metric on a weighted graph, called the squid graph. We present the construction of this metric and discuss its possible role in constraining conformal data.

Ising Cosmology

Using arguments from holography we propose that the deviation of the cosmological spectral index $n_S$ of scalar fluctuations from unity may be controlled almost entirely by the critical exponent $η$ of the $d = 3$ Ising model

Thermal effects in Ising Cosmology

We consider a real scalar field in de Sitter background and compute its thermal propagators. We propose that in a dS/CFT context, non-trivial thermal effects as seen by an 'out' observer can be encoded in the anomalous dimensions of the $d = 3$ Ising model. One of these anomalous dimensions, the critical exponent $\eta$, fixes completely a number of cosmological observables, which we compute

RG flows in Non-Perturbative Gauge-Higgs Unification II. Effective action for the Higgs phase near the quantum phase transition

We construct the zero temperature (no compact dimensions) effective action for an SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in five dimensions, with boundary conditions that reduce the symmetry on the four-dimensional boundary located at the origin to a U(1)-complex scalar system. In order to be sensitive to the Higgs phase, we need to include higher dimensional operators in the effective action, which can be naturally achieved by generating it by expanding the corresponding lattice construction in small lattice spacing, taking the naive continuum limit and then renormalizing. In addition, we build in the effective action non-perturbative information, related to a first order quantum phase transition known to exist. As a result, the effective action acquires a finite cut-off that is low and the fine tuning of the scalar mass is rather mild.

On RG flows in Generalized Effective Field Theory

Generalized Effective Field Theory (GEFT) is the non-renormalizable extension of an Effective Field Theory where the Wilson coefficients are endowed by their own, independent scale dependence. Such an effective theory can be constructed by quantizing a Lagrangian in the presence of all internal symmetry respecting operators of any mass dimension. The resulting theory may be practically useful in regimes of its phase diagram where the perturbative expansion and a truncation of the infinite tower of Higher Dimensional Operators (HDO) are valid. The massless limit of GEFT is especially interesting as the spontaneous breaking of internal symmetry and of scale invariance are correlated.

Symmetry breaking and RG flows with higher dimensional operators

We discuss the role of higher dimensional operators in the spontaneous breaking of internal symmetry and scale invariance, in the context of the Lorentz invariant scalar field theory. Using the $\varepsilon$-expansion we determine phase diagrams and demonstrate that (un)stable RG flows computed with a certain basis of dimension 6 operators in the Lagrangian, map to (un)stable RG flows of another basis related to the first by field redefinitions. Crucial is the presence of reparametrization ghosts if Ostrogradsky ghosts appear.

Dark Matter with Stuckelberg Axions

We review a class of models which generalize the traditional Peccei-Quinn (PQ) axion solution by a Stückelberg pseudoscalar. Such axion models represent a significant variant with respect to earlier scenarios where axion fields were associated with global anomalies, because of the Stückelberg field, which is essential for the cancellation of gauge anomalies in the presence of extra $U(1)$ symmetries. The extra neutral currents associated to these models have been investigated in the past in orientifold models with intersecting branes, under the assumption that the Stückelberg scale was in the multi-TeV region. Such constructions, at the field theory level, are quite general and can be interpreted as the four-dimensional field theory realization of the Green-Schwarz mechanism of anomaly cancellation of string theory. We present an overview of models of this type in the TeV/multi TeV range in their original formulation and their recent embeddings into an ordinary GUT theory, presenting an $E_6\times U(1)_X$ model as an example. In this case the model contains two axions, the first corresponding to a Peccei-Quinn axion, whose misalignment takes place at the QCD phase transition, with a mass in the meV region and which solves the strong CP problem. The second axion is ultralight, in the $10^{-20}-10^{-22}$ eV region, due to a misalignment and a decoupling taking place at the GUT scale. The two scales introduced by the PQ solution, the PQ breaking scale and the misalignment scale at the QCD hadron transition, become the Planck and the GUT scales respectively, with a global anomaly replaced by a gauge anomaly. The periodic potential and the corresponding oscillations are related to a particle whose De Broglie wavelength can reach 10 kpc. Such a sub-galactic scale has been deemed necessary in order to resolve several dark matter issues at the astrophysical level.

RG flows in Non-Perturbative Gauge-Higgs Unification I

We initiate the continuum description of a non-perturbative 5d lattice Yang-Mills model with 4d boundaries using the $\varepsilon$-expansion. In its simplest version classically the bulk has an $SU(2)$ gauge symmetry and on the boundary there is an Abelian-Higgs system with zero scalar potential. In part I we compute the Renormalization Group flows and related quantities in a limit where the boundary decouples from the bulk.

Renormalization of the Abelian-Higgs Model in the R-xi and Unitary gauges and the physicality of its scalar potential

We perform an old school, one-loop renormalization of the Abelian-Higgs model in the Unitary and $R_ξ$ gauges, focused on the scalar potential and the gauge boson mass. Our goal is to demonstrate in this simple context the validity of the Unitary gauge at the quantum level, which could open the way for an until now (mostly) avoided framework for loop computations. We indeed find that the Unitary gauge is consistent and equivalent to the $R_ξ$ gauge at the level of $β$-functions. Then we compare the renormalized, finite, one-loop Higgs potential in the two gauges and we again find equivalence. This equivalence needs not only a complete cancellation of the gauge fixing parameter $ξ$ from the $R_ξ$ gauge potential but also requires its $ξ$-independent part to be equal to the Unitary gauge result. We follow the quantum behaviour of the system by plotting Renormalization Group trajectories and Lines of Constant Physics, with the former the well known curves and with the latter, determined by the finite parts of the counter-terms, particularly well suited for a comparison with non-perturbative studies.

Towards the effective action of Non-Perturbative Gauge-Higgs Unification (or on RG flows near quantum phase transitions)

We make a few general comments on the Renormalization Group flows in certain Yang-Mills theories in the vicinity of phase transitions. We then present a model in d=5 with non-periodic boundary conditions where a possible RG flow starts from the trivial point and ends on a quantum phase transition. Near the endpoint of the flow interesting comments can be made about the Higgs hierarchy problem.

Lines of Constant Physics in a Five-Dimensional Gauge-Higgs Unification Scenario

We report on the progress in the study of a five-dimensional SU(2) Gauge-Higgs Unification model. In this non-perturbative study, the Higgs mechanism is triggered by the spontaneous breaking of a global symmetry. In the same region of the phase diagram, we observe both dimensional reduction and the ratio of Higgs and Z boson masses to take the value known from experiment. We present the first results on the construction of a line of constant physics in this region, including the prediction for the mass scale of the first excited states of the Higgs and gauge bosons.

Quantum phase transition of high dimensional Yang-Mills theories

We determine the critical value of the coupling where the first order quantum phase transition takes place for lattice SU(2) Yang-Mills theories in dimensions higher than four. Within a Mean-Field approach we derive an approximate law valid for any dimension d and in the context of a Monte Carlo approach, in addition to the already known d=5 case, we look at d=6,7,8.

Non-Perturbative Gauge-Higgs Unification in Five Dimensions

We study the phase diagram and mass spectrum of an $SU(2)$ Gauge-Higgs Unification scenario on a five-dimensional orbifold. We observe spontaneous symmetry breaking within the Higgs phase of the theory and, in the vicinity of a newly discovered phase, we find that the ratio of Higgs to gauge boson masses takes a Standard Model-like value. Precisely in this region of the phase diagram, we observe dimensional reduction via localisation.
