Higgs mechanism in five-dimensional gauge theories

Lattice simulations of five-dimensional gauge theories on an orbifold revealed that there is spontaneous symmetry breaking. Some of the extra-dimensional components of the gauge field play the role of a Higgs field and some of the four-dimensional components become massive gauge bosons. The effect is confirmed by computing the Coleman-Weinberg potential with a cutoff. We compare the results of this computation with the lattice data.

Stuckelberg Axions and the Effective Action of Anomalous Abelian Models 2. A SU(3)_C x SU(2)_W x U(1)_Y x U(1)_B model and its signature at the LHC

We elaborate on an extension of the Standard Model with a gauge structure enlarged by a single anomalous U(1), where the presence of a Wess-Zumino term is motivated by the Green-Schwarz mechanism of string theory. The additional gauge interaction is anomalous and requires an axion for anomaly cancelation. The pseudoscalar implements the Stückelberg mechanism and undergoes mixing with the standard Higgs sector to render the additional U(1) massive. We consider a 2-Higgs doublet model. We show that the anomalous effective vertices involving neutral currents are potentially observable. We clarify their role in the case of simple processes such as $Z^*\to γγ$, which are at variance with respect to the Standard Model. A brief discussion of the implications of these studies for the LHC is included.

The Higgs mechanism as a cut-off effect

We compute the Coleman-Weinberg potential with a finite cut-off for pure SU(2) and SU(3) five-dimensional gauge theories compactified on an interval. We show that besides the expected Coulomb phase located at and in the vicinity of the free infrared stable or "trivial" fixed point, the theory possesses also a Higgs phase. We compare the results from the potential computation with lattice data from simulations.

Windows over a New Low Energy Axion

We outline some general features of possible extensions of the Standard Model that include anomalous U(1) gauge symmetries, a certain number of axions and their mixings with the CP-odd Higgs sector. As previously shown, after the mixing one of the axions becomes a physical pseudoscalar (the axi-Higgs) that can take the role of a modified QCD axion. It can be driven to be very light by the same non-perturbative effects that are held responsible for the solution of the strong CP-problem. At the same time the axi-Higgs has a sizeable gauge interaction, which is not allowed to the Peccei-Quinn axion, possibly explaining the PVLAS results. We point out that the Wess-Zumino term, typical of these models, can be both interpreted as an anomaly inflow from higher dimensional theories (second window) but also as a result of partial decoupling of an extra Higgs sector (and of a fermion) that leaves behind an effective anomalous abelian theory (first window) in a broken Stückelberg phase. The possibility that the axi-Higgs can be heavy, of the order of the Higgs mass or larger, however, can't be excluded. The potentialities for the discovery of this particle and of anomaly effects in the neutral current sector at the LHC are briefly discussed in the context of a superstring inspired model (second window), but with results that remain valid also if any of the two possibilities is realized in Nature.

Stuckelberg Axions and the Effective Action of Anomalous Abelian Models 1. A unitarity analysis of the Higgs-axion mixing

We analyze the quantum consistency of anomalous abelian models and of their effective field theories, rendered anomaly-free by a Wess-Zumino term, in the case of multiple abelian symmetries. These models involve the combined Higgs-Stuckelberg mechanism and predict a pseudoscalar axion-like field that mixes with the goldstones of the ordinary Higgs sector. We focus our study on the issue of unitarity of these models both before and after spontaneous symmetry breaking and detail the set of Ward identities and the organization of the loop expansion in the effective theory. The analysis is performed on simple models where we show, in general, the emergence of new effective vertices determined by certain anomalous interactions.

Folding Froggatt-Nielsen into the Stueckelberg-Higgs mechanism in anomalous U(1) models

We describe a simple connection between the Froggatt-Nielsen, Stueckelberg and Higgs mechanisms, all three of them combined in a consistent way. This is illustrated in the context of a class of generalizations of the Standard Model with a gauge structure extended by a certain number of anomalous U(1) factors. These are built in the effective action in a way that gauge invariance and unitarity are preserved. Among other features, a physical axion with properties different from those of a Peccei-Quinn axion emerges.

On the construction of Chern-Simons terms in the presence of flux

We develop a method for relating the boundary effective action associated with an orbifold of the D+1 dimensional theory of a p-form field to D dimensional fluxed Chern-Simons type of terms. We apply the construction to derive from twelve dimensions the Chern-Simons terms of the eleven dimensional supergravity theory in the presence of flux.

On the Effective Theory of Low Scale Orientifold String Vacua

The effective field theory of the minimal Low Scale Orientifold Models is developed. It describes universal features of related orientifold vacua in string theory. It contains, beyond the Standard Model fields, an MSSM-like Higgs sector and three anomalous (massive) U(1) gauge bosons. All renormalizable couplings are included as well as some dimension-five couplings that are important for anomaly cancellation. The Higgs symmetry breaking induces mixing between the anomalous U(1) gauge bosons and the photon and $Z^0$. This mixing as well as the anomaly generated cubic vector boson couplings is potentially important for discriminating such models from other theories containing Z's. Some interesting tree-level processes are also evaluated.

Gauge theories on a five-dimensional orbifold

We present a construction of non-Abelian gauge theories on the R^4 x S^1/Z_2 orbifold. We show that no divergent boundary mass term for the Higgs field, identified with some of the fifth dimensional components of the gauge field, is generated. The formulation of the theories on the lattice requires only Dirichlet boundary conditions that specify the breaking of the gauge group. The first simulations in order to resolve the issue whether these theories can be used at low energy as weakly interacting effective theories have been performed. In case of a positive answer, these theories could provide us with a new framework for studying electroweak symmetry breaking.

Non-perturbative definition of five-dimensional gauge theories on the R^4 x S^1/Z_2 orbifold

We construct a Z_2 orbifold projection of SU(N) gauge theories formulated in five dimensions with a compact fifth dimension. We show through a non-perturbative argument that no boundary mass term for the Higgs field, identified with some of the fifth dimensional components of the gauge field, is generated, which would be quadratically divergent in the five-dimensional ultraviolet cutoff. This opens the possibility of studying these theories non-perturbatively in order to establish if they can be used as effective weakly interacting theories at low energies. We make preparations for a study on the lattice. In particular we show that only Dirichlet boundary conditions are needed, which specify the breaking pattern of the gauge group at the orbifold fixpoints.

Remarks on cosmological issues in some string theoretic brane worlds

We examine, in the context of certain string compactifications resulting in five dimensional brane worlds the mechanisms of (self) tuning of the cosmological constant and the recovery of standard cosmological evolution. We show that self tuning can occur only as long as supersymmetry is unbroken (unless additional assumptions are made) and that the adjustment of the cosmological constant to zero after supersymmetry breaking and the recovery of standard evolution are the same problem verifying previously made statements in the context of general i.e. not necessarily string theoretic brane worlds. We emphasize, however, that contrary to general brane worlds where the above adjustment requires a fine tuning, stringy brane worlds contain an additional integration constant due to the presence of the compact space thus allowing the adjustment to be done only with integration constants.
