Quasi-exact solvability in a general polynomial setting

Our goal in this paper is to extend the theory of quasi-exactly solvable Schrodinger operators beyond the Lie-algebraic class. Let $\cP_n$ be the space of n-th degree polynomials in one variable. We first analyze "exceptional polynomial subspaces" which are those proper subspaces of $\cP_n$ invariant under second order differential operators which do not preserve $\cP_n$. We characterize the only possible exceptional subspaces of codimension one and we describe the space of second order differential operators that leave these subspaces invariant. We then use equivalence under changes of variable and gauge transformations to achieve a complete classification of these new, non-Lie algebraic Schrodinger operators. As an example, we discuss a finite gap elliptic potential which does not belong to the Treibich-Verdier class.

Quasi-exact solvability beyond the SL(2) algebraization

We present evidence to suggest that the study of one dimensional quasi-exactly solvable (QES) models in quantum mechanics should be extended beyond the usual $\sla(2)$ approach. The motivation is twofold: We first show that certain quasi-exactly solvable potentials constructed with the $\sla(2)$ Lie algebraic method allow for a new larger portion of the spectrum to be obtained algebraically. This is done via another algebraization in which the algebraic hamiltonian cannot be expressed as a polynomial in the generators of $\sla(2)$. We then show an example of a new quasi-exactly solvable potential which cannot be obtained within the Lie-algebraic approach.

Structure theorems for linear and non-linear differential operators admitting invariant polynomial subspaces

In this paper we derive structure theorems that characterize the spaces of linear and non-linear differential operators that preserve finite dimensional subspaces generated by polynomials in one or several variables. By means of the useful concept of deficiency, we can write explicit basis for these spaces of differential operators. In the case of linear operators, these results apply to the theory of quasi-exact solvability in quantum mechanics, specially in the multivariate case where the Lie algebraic approach is harder to apply. In the case of non-linear operators, the structure theorems in this paper can be applied to the method of finding special solutions of non-linear evolution equations by nonlinear separation of variables.

An infinite-dimensional manifold structure for analytic Lie pseudogroups of infinite type

We construct a infinite-dimensional manifold structure adapted to analytic Lie pseudogroups of infinite type. More precisely, we prove that any isotropy subgroup of an analytic Lie pseudogroup of infinite type is a regular infinite-dimensional Lie group, modelled on a locally convex strict inductive limit of Banach spaces. This is an infinite-dimensional generalization to the case of Lie pseudogroups of the classical second fundamental theorem of Lie.

The Long-Time Dynamics of Dirac Particles in the Kerr-Newman Black Hole Geometry

We consider the Cauchy problem for the massive Dirac equation in the non-extreme Kerr-Newman geometry outside the event horizon. We derive an integral representation for the Dirac propagator involving the solutions of the ODEs which arise in Chandrasekhar's separation of variables. It is proved that for initial data in L^\infty_loc near the event horizon with L^2 decay at infinity, the probability of the Dirac particle to be in any compact region of space tends to zero as t goes to infinity. This means that the Dirac particle must either disappear in the black hole or escape to infinity.

The Darboux transformation and algebraic deformations of shape-invariant potentials

We investigate the backward Darboux transformations (addition of a lowest bound state) of shape-invariant potentials on the line, and classify the subclass of algebraic deformations, those for which the potential and the bound states are simple elementary functions. A countable family, $m=0,1,2,...$, of deformations exists for each family of shape-invariant potentials. We prove that the $m$-th deformation is exactly solvable by polynomials, meaning that it leaves invariant an infinite flag of polynomial modules $\mathcal{P}^{(m)}_m\subset\mathcal{P}^{(m)}_{m+1}\subset...$, where $\mathcal{P}^{(m)}_n$ is a codimension $m$ subspace of $<1,z,...,z^n>$. In particular, we prove that the first ($m=1$) algebraic deformation of the shape-invariant class is precisely the class of operators preserving the infinite flag of exceptional monomial modules $\mathcal{P}^{(1)}_n = < 1,z^2,...,z^n>$. By construction, these algebraically deformed Hamiltonians do not have an $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ hidden symmetry algebra structure.

Decay Rates and Probability Estimates for Massive Dirac Particles in the Kerr-Newman Black Hole Geometry

The Cauchy problem is considered for the massive Dirac equation in the non-extreme Kerr-Newman geometry, for smooth initial data with compact support outside the event horizon and bounded angular momentum. We prove that the Dirac wave function decays in L^\infty_loc at least at the rate t^{-5/6}. For generic initial data, this rate of decay is sharp. We derive a formula for the probability p that the Dirac particle escapes to infinity. For various conditions on the initial data, we show that p=0,1 or 0<p<1. The proofs are based on a refined analysis of the Dirac propagator constructed in gr-qc/0005088.

Non-Existence of Time-Periodic Solutions of the Dirac Equation in an Axisymmetric Black Hole Geometry

We prove that, in the non-extreme Kerr-Newman black hole geometry, the Dirac equation has no normalizable, time-periodic solutions. A key tool is Chandrasekhar's separation of the Dirac equation in this geometry. A similar non-existence theorem is established in a more general class of stationary, axisymmetric metrics in which the Dirac equation is known to be separable. These results indicate that, in contrast with the classical situation of massive particle orbits, a quantum mechanical Dirac particle must either disappear into the black hole or escape to infinity.

On form-preserving transformations for the time-dependent Schrödinger equation

In this paper we point out a close connection between the Darboux transformation and the group of point transformations which preserve the form of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). In our main result, we prove that any pair of time-dependent real potentials related by a Darboux transformation for the TDSE may be transformed by a suitable point transformation into a pair of time-independent potentials related by a usual Darboux transformation for the stationary Schrödinger equation. Thus, any (real) potential solvable via a time-dependent Darboux transformation can alternatively be solved by applying an appropriate form-preserving transformation of the TDSE to a time-independent potential. The preeminent role of the latter type of transformations in the solution of the TDSE is illustrated with a family of quasi-exactly solvable time-dependent anharmonic potentials.

Invariant Modules and the Reduction of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations to Dynamical Systems

We completely characterize all nonlinear partial differential equations leaving a given finite-dimensional vector space of analytic functions invariant. Existence of an invariant subspace leads to a re duction of the associated dynamical partial differential equations to a system of ordinary differential equations, and provide a nonlinear counterpart to quasi-exactly solvable quantum Hamiltonians. These results rely on a useful extension of the classical Wronskian determinant condition for linear independence of functions. In addition, new approaches to the characterization o f the annihilating differential operators for spaces of analytic functions are presented.

The Lie Algebraic Structure of Differential Operators Admitting Invariant Spaces of Polynomials

We prove that the scalar and $2\times 2$ matrix differential operators which preserve the simplest scalar and vector-valued polynomial modules in two variables have a fundamental Lie algebraic structure. Our approach is based on a general graphical method which does not require the modules to be irreducible under the action of the corresponding Lie (super)algebra. This method can be generalized to modules of polynomials in an arbitrary number of variables. We give generic examples of partially solvable differential operators which are not Lie algebraic. We show that certain vector-valued modules give rise to new realizations of finite-dimensional Lie superalgebras by first-order differential operators.

The Multidimensional Darboux Transformation

A generalization of the classical one-dimensional Darboux transformation to arbitrary n-dimensional oriented Riemannian manifolds is constructed using an intrinsic formulation based on the properties of twisted Hodge Laplacians. The classical two-dimensional Moutard transformation is also generalized to non-compact oriented Riemannian manifolds of dimension n greater than one. New examples of quasi-exactly solvable multidimensional matrix Schrödinger operators on curved manifolds are obtained by applying the above results.

Real Lie Algebras of Differential Operators and Quasi-Exactly Solvable Potentials

We first establish some general results connecting real and complex Lie algebras of first-order differential operators. These are applied to completely classify all finite-dimensional real Lie algebras of first-order differential operators in $R^2$. Furthermore, we find all algebras which are quasi-exactly solvable, along with the associated finite-dimensional modules of analytic functions. The resulting real Lie algebras are used to construct new quasi-exactly solvable Schroedinger operators on $R^2$.
