The Sequential Empirical Bayes Method: An Adaptive Constrained-Curve Fitting Algorithm for Lattice QCD

We introduce the ``Sequential Empirical Bayes Method'', an adaptive constrained-curve fitting procedure for extracting reliable priors. These are then used in standard augmented-$χ^2$ fits on separate data. This better stabilizes fits to lattice QCD overlap-fermion data at very low quark mass where {\it a priori} values are not otherwise known. Lessons learned (including caveats limiting the scope of the method) from studying artificial data are presented. As an illustration, from local-local two-point correlation functions, we obtain masses and spectral weights for ground and first-excited states of the pion, give preliminary fits for the $a_0$ where ghost states (a quenched artifact) must be dealt with, and elaborate on the details of fits of the Roper resonance and $S_{11}(N^{1/2-})$ previously presented elsewhere. The data are from overlap fermions on a quenched $16^3\times 28$ lattice with spatial size $La=3.2 {\rm fm}$ and pion mass as low as $\sim 180 {\rm MeV}$.

An Algorithm for Obtaining Reliable Priors for Constrained-Curve Fits

We introduce the ``Sequential Empirical Bayes Method'', an adaptive constrained-curve fitting procedure for extracting reliable priors. These are then used in standard augmented-chi-square fits on separate data. This better stabilizes fits to lattice QCD overlap-fermion data at very low quark mass where a priori values are not otherwise known. We illustrate the efficacy of the method with data from overlap fermions, on a quenched $16^3\times 28$ lattice with spatial size La=3.2 fm and pion mass as low as $\sim$ 180 MeV.

Study of stochastic estimates of quark loops with unbiased subtraction

Stochastic noise estimator method is a powerful tool to calculate the disconnected insertion involving quark loops. We study the variance reduction technique with unbiased subtraction. We use the complex $Z_2$ noise to calculate the quark loops on a $16^3 \times 24$ lattice with $β= 6.0$ and $κ$ = 0.154. Unbiased subtraction method is performed by using hoping parameter expansion. We report on the variance reduction for the point-split vector current as a function of the number of subtraction terms and the number of noise used.

Quenched Chiral Log and Light Quark Mass from Overlap Fermions

We study the quenched chiral behavior of the pion with mass as low as $\approx 180$ MeV. The calculation is done on a quenched lattice of size $16^3\times 28$ and $a = 0.2$ fm with 80 configurations using overlap fermions and an improved gauge action. Using an improved constrained curve fitting technique, we find that the ground state pseudoscalar mass versus bare quark mass behavior is well controlled with small statistical errors; this permits a reliable fit of the quenched chiral log effects, a determination of the chiral log parameter ($δ= 0.26(3)$), and an estimate of the renormalized mass of the light quark ($m^{\bar{MS}}(μ=2 {\rm GeV}) = 3.7(3) {\rm MeV}$).

Charmed and Bottom Baryons from Lattice NRQCD

The mass spectrum of charmed and bottom baryons has been computed on anisotropic lattices using quenched lattice nonrelativistic QCD. Masses are extracted by using mass splittings which are more accurate than masses obtained directly by using the nonrelativistic mass-energy relation. Of particular interest are the mass splittings between spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 heavy baryons, and we find that these color hyperfine effects are not suppressed in the baryon sector although they are known to be suppressed in the meson sector. Results are compared with those obtained in a previous NRQCD calculation and with those obtained from a Dirac-Wilson action of the D234 type.

Heavy Baryons from Lattice NRQCD

The mass spectrum of heavy quark baryons has been computed on anisotropic lattices using quenched lattice nonrelativistic QCD. The mass splittings between spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 baryons are also calculated. Results are compared to those obtained by using a Dirac-Wilson action of the D234 type. Color hyperfine effects in heavy baryons are also discussed.

Spin splittings among charmed hadrons

The mass differences between spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 baryons are compared to the mass differences between spin-0 and spin-1 mesons. Results of simulations for charmed hadrons in the quenched approximation from a tadpole-improved anisotropic action are discussed in the context of other lattice calculations, quark model predictions, heavy quark symmetry predictions and experimental data.

Charmed baryons in lattice QCD

Masses of singly and doubly charmed baryons are calculated in quenched lattice QCD using an improved action of the D234 type on an anisotropic lattice. The mass differences between spin 3/2 and spin 1/2 baryon states are calculated and compared to mass differences between vector and pseudoscalar mesons. The suppression of spin splittings in mesons containing heavy quarks, characteristic of quenched QCD simulations, is not observed in the baryon sector. The mass dependence of color hyperfine effects is discussed within the context of the quark model and heavy quark effective theory.

Strange Magnetic Moment of The Nucleon from Lattice QCD

We calculate the strange magnetic moment of the nucleon on a quenched $16^3 \times 24$ lattice at $β= 6.0$, and with Wilson fermions at $κ$ = 0.148, 0.152, and 0.154. The strange quark contribution from the disconnected insertion is estimated stochastically by employing the $Z_2$ noise method. Using an unbiased subtraction along with the help of charge conjugation and hermiticity, we reduce the error by a factor of 2 with negligible overhead. Our result is $G_{M}^{s} = -0.28\pm0.10 μ_{N}$.

Proton Spin Content From Lattice QCD

We calculate the form factor of the quark energy momentum tensor and thereby extract the quark orbital angular momentum of the nucleon. The calculation is done on a quenched $16^3 \times 24$ lattice at $β= 6.0$ and with Wilson fermions at $κ$ = 0.148, 0.152, 0.154 and 0.155. We calculate the disconnected insertion stochastically which employs the $Z_2$ noise with an unbiased subtraction. This proves to be an efficient method of reduce the error from the noise. We find that the total quark contribution to the proton spin is $0.29 \pm 0.07$. From this we deduce that the quark orbital angular momentum is $0.17 \pm 0.08$ and predict the gluon spin to be $0.21 \pm 0.07$, i.e. about 40% of the proton spin is due to the glue.

Extraction of Electrostrong Parameters of $N^{*}(1520)$ from Eta Photoproduction

Recently obtained polarized target and photon asymmetry data in eta photoproduction are shown to be very powerful, in conjunction with the differential cross-section data, in yielding model-insensitive constraints on the electrostrong parameters for the excitation and decay of the $N^{*}(1520)$ resonance. The extracted ratio of its electromagnetic helicity amplitudes, $A_{3/2}/A_{1/2}$, provides a critical test for the QCD-inspired hadron models.
