Optimizing spin-based terahertz emission from magnetic heterostructures

Terahertz radiation pulses can be generated efficiently through femtosecond laser excitation of a ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic heterostructure, wherein an ultrafast laser-induced spin current results in an electromagnetic THz pulse due to spin-charge conversion. It is, however, still poorly understood how the THz emission amplitude and its bandwidth can be optimized. Here, we perform a systematic analysis of the THz emission from various magnetic heterostructures. The dynamics of the spin current is described by the semiclassical, superdiffusive spin-transport model and the energy dependence of the spin Hall effect of hot electrons is taken into account, leading to emission profiles for Co(2 nm)/Pt(4 nm) bilayer in good agreement with experiment. To identify the optimal {conditions} for THz emission, {we study} the properties of the emitted THz wave profile by systematically varying the layer thicknesses of metallic bilayers, their interfacial spin-current transmission properties, their materials' dependence, and influence of the pump laser-pulse width, allowing us to give optimization guidelines. We find that thin nonmagnetic layer thicknesses of 5-6 nm provide the largest bandwidth in the case of Co/Pt and that the peak frequency of the THz emission depends only on the geometry of the emitter and not on the laser pulse width. The THz bandwidth {is conversely found to} depend on several factors such as exciting laser pulse width, layers' thicknesses, and interface transmission-reflection properties, with the limitation that an increase in the bandwidth by tuning the interface properties comes with a trade-off in the energy efficiency of the emitter. Lastly, we propose a double pulse excitation protocol of a trilayer system that could provide broadband THz emission with a large bandwidth. {Our results contribute to establishing guidelines for optimizing spintronic THz generation.

Magnetic control of an exciton-polariton condensate in a van der Waals magnet

Quasiparticle condensates are among the most spectacular solid-state manifestations of quantum physics. Coupling macroscopic real-space wavefunctions to additional degrees of freedom, such as the electron spin, would add valuable control knobs for quantum applications. While creating spin-carrying superconducting condensates has attracted enormous attention, man-made condensates of light-matter hybrids known as exciton-polaritons have lacked an analogous spin-based perspective. Here we open a new door by demonstrating magnetically tunable exciton-polariton condensation in the van der Waals magnet CrSBr. Under photoexcitation, CrSBr microwires embedded in an optical cavity show the hallmarks of polariton condensation: a dramatic increase of the emission intensity from an excited laterally confined polariton state by multiple orders of magnitude, spectral narrowing of the emission line, and a continuous shift of the peak energy. Interferometry evidences an increase in spatial and temporal coherence. Owing to the strong coupling between the spin order and excitonic correlation, the energy of the condensate can be tuned by up to 10.5 meV by an external magnetic field of only 2 Tesla. Our results establish CrSBr microcavities as a powerful platform for exploring magnetic control of polariton condensates and mark a significant step toward spin-controlled coherent quantum light sources.

Revealing the nature of the charge density wave order of ErTe$_3$ via Raman scattering under anisotropic strain

The nature of the charge density wave (CDW) order of the rare-earth tritelluride ErTe3 is investigated by Raman scattering under anisotropic strain. The CDW state of ErTe3 is unconventional since it is accompanied by an unusual mirror symmetry breaking, whose origin remains to be understood. Studying the polarization-resolved Raman spectrum of the CDW amplitude mode as a function of strain and temperature, we find that the mirror symmetry breakings of the CDW state are not independent, arguing against the recently proposed ferro-axial multi-component CDW order. Instead, we show that a single component CDW order parameter with an ordering wavevector tilted away from the principle crystallographic axis can reproduce the observed mirror symmetry breakings and their manifestation in the Raman spectra.

Ultrafast Raman probe of the photoinduced superconducting to normal state transition in the cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$

We report an ultrafast Time-Resolved Raman scattering study of the out-of-equilibrium photoinduced dynamics across the superconducting to normal state phase transition of the cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. Using the polarization-resolved momentum space selectivity of Raman scattering, we track the superconducting condensate destruction and recovery dynamics with sub-picoseconds time resolution in the anti-nodal region of the Fermi surface where the superconducting gap is maximum. Leveraging ultrafast Raman thermometry, we find a significant dichotomy between the superconducting condensate and the quasiparticle temperature dynamics near the anti-nodes, which cannot be framed in terms of a single effective electron temperature. The present work demonstrates the ability of Time-Resolved Raman scattering to selectively probe out-of-equilibrium pathways of different electronic sub-degrees of freedom during a photoinduced phase transition.

Photoinduced renormalization of Dirac states in BaNiS$_2$

By means of pump-probe time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, we provide evidence of a sizeable reduction of the Fermi velocity of out-of-equilibrium Dirac bands in the quasi-two-dimensional semimetal BaNiS$_2$. First-principle calculations indicate that this band renormalization is ascribed to a change in non-local electron correlations driven by a photo-induced enhancement of screening properties. This effect is accompanied by a slowing down of the Dirac fermions and by a non-rigid shift of the bands at the center of the Brillouin zone. This result suggests that other similar electronic structure renormalizations may be photoinduced in other materials in presence of strong non-local correlations.
