Normalizing flows for all-orders QED corrections in lattice field theory

This work develops a framework to apply normalizing-flow transformations of field configurations for all-orders Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) corrections in lattice field theory. This opens a new possibility to determine all-order corrections without the need for additional Monte Carlo sampling, generally bypassing the complexity in Wick-contraction diagrams needed at fixed order. The new method is applied to lattice scalar QED in two, three, and four spacetime dimensions, using both analytical and machine-learned flows, with both approaches yielding estimates with significantly reduced variance with respect to standard methods. It is further shown that flows can be trained using small lattice geometries and subsequently evaluated on much larger lattice geometries while maintaining good efficiency. A generalization to theories with fermions is envisaged, suggesting a path to applications in challenging field theories including lattice Quantum Chromodynamics.

Real radiative decays of heavy pseudoscalar mesons

We report our ongoing lattice QCD study of radiative leptonic decays of the charged pseudoscalar mesons $D$, $D_s$, $B$, and $B_c \to \ell ν_\ell γ$. We carry out our analysis on a single JLQCD ensemble with lattice spacing $a=0.044~\text{fm}$. This work is a step towards a complete QCD+QED lattice calculation of these modes, aimed at reducing theoretical uncertainties in the extraction of $|V_{cd}|$ and $|V_{cs}|$ and providing first-principles estimates of the corresponding form factors in the $B$ sector.

Isospin breaking corrections to the hadronic vacuum polarization with stochastic coordinate sampling

In the recent Muon g-2 Theory Initiative white paper update, the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution -- which dominates the theoretical uncertainty -- is evaluated as an average of different lattice QCD calculations. Since lattice simulations are mostly carried out in isospin symmetric QCD, corrections due to the mass difference of the up and down quarks and the coupling to photons have to be accounted for. These isospin breaking effects are of order 1\% and can be treated as corrections to the result for the HVP contribution in isospin symmetric QCD. In the current estimate of the HVP contribution, these effects are a large source of uncertainty due to the extensive computational cost to compute all occurring Wick contractions and degrading signal-to-noise behaviour especially for quark disconnected diagrams. We present the current status of the calculation of isospin breaking corrections in the HVP contribution for the RBC/UKQCD collaborations. We use a dataset of propagators computed using stochastic coordinate sampling (SCS) to construct all necessary Wick contractions for the electromagnetic and strong isospin breaking effects. We employ different versions of QED on the lattice, such as QED$_L$, QED$_r$ and QED$_\infty$ to improve our estimate of finite-volume uncertainties.

On the Charm Contribution to the Muon $g-2$ Light-by-Light

We combine existing perturbative results to show that a precise analytic determination of the charm-quark contribution to the hadronic light-by-light (HLbL) part of the muon anomalous magnetic moment is possible. Working in the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ scheme, we include the NLO $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$ correction, which significantly reduces the residual renormalization-scale dependence and the perturbative uncertainty. Our final result is $a_μ^{\mathrm{HLbLc}}=3.65(25)\times 10^{-11}$, in good agreement with recent lattice determinations.

The Pion Sum Rule beyond the Chiral Limit

The difference between the charged and neutral pion masses can be predicted from a well-known dispersion relation involving an infinite-energy integral over experimental data, the pion sum rule. This relation, however, holds only in the chiral limit. Here we combine several nonperturbative techniques to determine the form of the physical finite-energy integral, thereby generalizing this sum rule to include effects linear in the light-quark masses. We test the dispersion relation using hadronic tau-decay data.

$\text{QED}_\text{r}$: a finite-volume QED action with redistributed spatial zero-momentum modes

We present a finite-volume QED action designed to improve the infinite-volume extrapolation of hadronic observables in precision lattice QCD+QED calculations. The action proposed in this work, which we call $\text{QED}_\text{r}$, can be seen as a particular case of the infrared-improved QED actions introduced by Davoudi et al. in 2019, and is specifically designed to remove kinematics-independent finite-volume corrections that appear at $\mathrm{O}(1/L^3)$ in the commonly used $\text{QED}_\text{L}$ formulation, where $L$ is the spatial extent of the physical volume. For a number of key observables, these effects depend on the internal structure of the hadrons and are difficult to evaluate non-perturbatively, making an analytical subtraction of the finite-volume effects impractical. We explicitly study the $\text{QED}_\text{r}$ electromagnetic finite-size effects on hadron masses and leptonic decay rates, relevant for Standard Model precision tests using the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements. In addition, we propose methods to remove the kinematics-dependent $\mathrm{O}(1/L^3)$ effects in leptonic decays. The removal of such contributions, shifting the leading contamination to $\mathrm{O}(1/L^4)$, will help to reduce the systematic uncertainties associated with finite-volume effects in future lattice QCD+QED calculations.

Short-distance contributions to Hadronic-light-by-light for the muon $g-2$

This talk discusses short-distance contributions to the hadronic light-by-light part of the muon g-2 as in the Standard Model. A short discussion about the theory prediction is followed by the status of our work. The main new results since the previous chiral dynamics workshop is how to calculate the higher order corrections to the Melnikov-Vainshtein region using the operator product expansion. We work out fully the next order in the OPE, $D=4$, including photon and gluon only operators. In addition we briefly discuss the ongoing work on gluonic corrections to the next-order and nonperturbative estimates.

Constraints on the hadronic light-by-light tensor in corner kinematics for the muon $g-2$

The dispersive approach to the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon $g-2$ involves an integral over three virtual photon momenta appearing in the light-by-light tensor. Building upon previous works, we systematically derive short-distance constraints in the region where two momenta are large compared to the third, the so-called Melnikov-Vainshtein or corner region. We include gluonic corrections for the different scalar functions appearing in the Lorentz decomposition of the underlying tensor, and explicitly check analytic agreement with alternative operator product expansions in overlapping regimes of validity. A very strong pattern of cancellations is observed for the final $g-2$ integrand. The last observation suggests that a very compact expression only containing the axial current form factors can provide a good approximation of the corner region of the hadronic light-by-light tensor.

Structure-dependent electromagnetic finite-volume effects to the hadronic vacuum polarisation

In this talk we present some preliminary results and discuss the prospects of determining the leading structure-dependent finite-volume effects in the hadronic vacuum polarisation associated to order $e^2$ electromagnetic corrections. In the quantum electrodynamics prescription $\textrm{QED}_{\textrm{L}}$ these arise at order $1/L^3$ in the large-volume expansion, which is also the leading order because of the neutrality of the currents defining the underlying correlation function. Knowing the size of the finite-volume effects in question is relevant for determinations of the leading isospin-breaking corrections to the muon anomalous magnetic moment coming from the hadronic vacuum polarisation.

The anomalous Lagrangian in ChPT at NNLO

The anomalous Lagrangian in mesonic Chiral Perturbation Theory, of odd intrinsic parity, is determined to next-to-next-to-leading order thereby completing the order $p^8$ Lagrangian. A schematic view of its construction with the MINIBAR package for Mathematica is presented and the final operator count is discussed for a general number of light quark flavours as well as for the physical cases $N_f=2,3$. The number of operators in our explicit construction of the Lagrangian basis is consistent with the number derived using the Hilbert series in the literature.

The anomalous chiral Lagrangian at order $p^8$

We derive the order $p^8$ Lagrangian of odd intrinsic parity for mesonic chiral perturbation theory, and provide the resulting operator basis in the supplementary material. Neglecting the non-zero singlet trace, we find $999$ operators for a general number of quark flavours $N_f$, $705$ for $N_f=3$ and $92$ for $N_f=2$. Our numbers agree with those obtained through the Hilbert series approach in the literature. Including a singlet trace, as needed for the physical case of $N_f=2$, instead yields $1210$ operators for a general $N_f$, $892$ for $N_f=3$ and $211$ for $N_f=2$.

Structure-dependent electromagnetic finite-volume effects through order $1/L^3$

We consider electromagnetic finite-volume effects through order $1/L^3$ in different formulations of QED, where $L$ is the periodicity of the spatial volume. An inherent problem at this order is the appearance of structure-dependent quantities related to form factors and the analytical structure of the correlation functions. The non-local constraint of the widely used QED$_{\textrm{L}}$ regularization gives rise to structure-dependent effects that are difficult to evaluate analytically and can act as a precision bottleneck in lattice calculations. For this reason, we consider general volume expansions relevant for the mass spectrum as well as leptonic decay rates in QED$_{\textrm{C}}$, QED$_{\textrm{L}}$ and QED$_{\textrm{L}}^{\textrm{IR}}$, the latter being a class of non-local formulations generalising QED$_{\textrm{L}}$. One choice within this class is QED$_{\textrm{r}}$, first introduced at this conference, and we show that the effects of non-locality for the $1/L^3$ term in the expansion can be removed. We observe that there are still $1/L^3$ contributions unrelated to the (non-)locality of the studied QED formulations, but rather to collinear singularities in the physical amplitudes.

The order $p^8$ mesonic chiral Lagrangian

We derive the chiral Lagrangian at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (NNNLO) for a general number $N_f$ of light quark flavours as well as for $N_f=2,3$. We enumerate the contact terms separately. We also discuss the cases where some of the external fields are not included. An example of a choice of Lagrangian is given in the supplementary material.

Constraints on the hadronic light-by-light in the Melnikov-Vainshtein regime

The muon anomalous magnetic moment continues to attract attention due to the possible tension between the experimentally measured value and the theoretical Standard Model prediction. With the aim to reduce the uncertainty on the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the magnetic moment, we derive short-distance constraints in the Melnikov-Vainshtein regime which are useful for data-driven determinations. In this kinematical region, two of the four electromagnetic currents are close in the four-point function defining the hadronic light-by-light tensor. To obtain the constraints, we develop a systematic operator product expansion of the tensor in question to next-to-leading order in the expansion in operators. We evaluate the leading in $α_s$ contributions and derive constraints for the next-to-leading operators that are also valid nonperturbatively.

Isospin-breaking corrections to light leptonic decays in lattice QCD+QED at the physical point

We report on the physical-point RBC/UKQCD calculation of the leading isospin-breaking corrections to light-meson leptonic decays. This is highly relevant for future precision tests in the flavour physics sector, in particular the first-row unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix containing the elements $V_{us}$ and $V_{ud}$. The simulations were performed using Domain-Wall fermions for $2+1$ flavours, and with isospin-breaking effects included perturbatively in the path integral through order $α$ and $(m_u - m_d)/Λ_{\mathrm{QCD}}$. We use QED$_{\mathrm{L}}$ for the inclusion of electromagnetism, and discuss here the non-locality of this prescription which has significant impact on the infinite-volume extrapolation.

Isospin-breaking corrections to light-meson leptonic decays from lattice simulations at physical quark masses

The decreasing uncertainties in theoretical predictions and experimental measurements of several hadronic observables related to weak processes, which in many cases are now smaller than $\mathrm{O}(1\%)$, require theoretical calculations to include subleading corrections that were neglected so far. Precise determinations of leptonic and semi-leptonic decay rates, including QED and strong isospin-breaking effects, can play a central role in solving the current tensions in the first-row unitarity of the CKM matrix. In this work we present the first RBC/UKQCD lattice calculation of the isospin-breaking corrections to the ratio of leptonic decay rates of kaons and pions into muons and neutrinos. The calculation is performed with $N_\mathrm{f}=2+1$ dynamical quarks close to the physical point and domain wall fermions in the Möbius formulation are employed. Long-distance QED interactions are included according to the $\mathrm{QED_L}$ prescription and the crucial role of finite-volume electromagnetic corrections in the determination of leptonic decay rates, which produce a large systematic uncertainty, is extensively discussed. Finally, we study the different sources of uncertainty on $|V_\mathrm{us}|/|V_\mathrm{ud}|$ and observe that, if finite-volume systematics can be reduced, the error from isospin-breaking corrections is potentially sub-dominant in the final precision of the ratio of the CKM matrix elements.

Short-distance constraints on the hadronic light-by-light

The muon anomalous magnetic moment continues to attract interest due to the potential tension between experimental measurement [1,2] and the Standard Model prediction [3]. The hadronic light-by-light contribution to the magnetic moment is one of the two diagrammatic topologies currently saturating the theoretical uncertainty. With the aim of improving precision on the hadronic light-by-light in a data-driven approach founded on dispersion theory [4,5], we derive various short-distance constraints of the underlying correlation function of four electromagnetic currents. Here, we present our previous progress in the purely short-distance regime and current efforts in the so-called Melnikov-Vainshtein limit.
