Formal multiple Eisenstein series and their derivations

We introduce the algebra of formal multiple Eisenstein series and study its derivations. This algebra is motivated by the classical multiple Eisenstein series, introduced by Gangl-Kaneko-Zagier as a hybrid of classical Eisenstein series and multiple zeta values. In depth one, we obtain formal versions of the Eisenstein series satisfying the same algebraic relations as the classical Eisenstein series. In particular, they generate an algebra whose elements we call formal quasimodular forms. We show that the algebra of formal multiple Eisenstein series is an $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-algebra by formalizing the usual derivations for quasimodular forms and extending them naturally to the whole algebra. Additionally, we introduce some families of derivations for general quasi-shuffle algebras, providing a broader context for these derivations. Further, we prove that a quotient of this algebra is isomorphic to the algebra of formal multiple zeta values. This gives a novel and purely formal approach to classical (quasi)modular forms and builds a new link between (formal) multiple zeta values and modular forms.

Elliptic KZB connections via universal vector extensions

Using the formalism of bar complexes and their relative versions, we give a new, purely algebraic, construction of the so-called universal elliptic KZB connection in arbitrary level. We compute explicit analytic formulae, and we compare our results with previous approaches to elliptic KZB equations and multiple elliptic polylogarithms in the literature. Our approach is based on a number of results concerning logarithmic differential forms on universal vector extensions of elliptic curves. Let $S$ be a scheme of characteristic zero, $E \to S$ be an elliptic curve, $f:E^{\natural} \to S$ be its universal vector extension, and $\pi:E^{\natural} \to E$ be the natural projection. Given a finite subset of torsion sections $Z\subset E(S)$, we study the dg-algebra over $\mathcal{O}_S$ of relative logarithmic differentials $\mathcal{A} = f_*\Omega^{\bullet}_{E^{\natural}/S}(\log \pi^{-1}Z)$. In particular, we prove that the residue exact sequence in degree one splits canonically, and we derive the formality of $\mathcal{A}$. When $S$ is smooth over a field $k$ of characteristic zero, we also prove that sections of $\mathcal{A}^1$ admit canonical lifts to absolute logarithmic differentials in $f_*\Omega^1_{E^{\natural}/k}(\log \pi^{-1}Z)$, which extends a well known property for regular differentials given by the `crystalline nature' of universal vector extensions.

Modular graph forms from equivariant iterated Eisenstein integrals

The low-energy expansion of closed-string scattering amplitudes at genus one introduces infinite families of non-holomorphic modular forms called modular graph forms. Their differential and number-theoretic properties motivated Brown's alternative construction of non-holomorphic modular forms in the recent mathematics literature from so-called equivariant iterated Eisenstein integrals. In this work, we provide the first validations beyond depth one of Brown's conjecture that equivariant iterated Eisenstein integrals contain modular graph forms. Apart from a variety of examples at depth two and three, we spell out the systematics of the dictionary and make certain elements of Brown's construction fully explicit to all orders.

The distribution of Manin's iterated integrals of modular forms

We determine the asymptotic distribution of Manin's iterated integrals of length at most 2. For all lengths we compute all the asymptotic moments. We show that if the length is at least 3 these moments do in general not determine a unique distribution.

Realizations of the formal double Eisenstein space

We introduce the formal double Eisenstein space $\mathcal{E}_k$, which is a generalization of the formal double zeta space $\mathcal{D}_k$ of Gangl-Kaneko-Zagier, and prove analogues of the sum formula and parity result for formal double Eisenstein series. We show that $\mathbb Q$-linear maps $\mathcal{E}_k\rightarrow A$, for some $\mathbb Q$-algebra $A$, can be constructed from formal Laurent series (with coefficients in $A$) that satisfy the Fay identity. As the prototypical example, we define the Kronecker realization $ρ^{\mathfrak{K}}: \mathcal{E}_k\rightarrow \mathbb Q[[q]]$, which lifts Gangl-Kaneko-Zagier's Bernoulli realization $ρ^B: \mathcal{D}_k\rightarrow \mathbb Q$, and whose image consists of quasimodular forms for the full modular group. As an application to the theory of modular forms, we obtain a purely combinatorial proof of Ramanujan's differential equations for classical Eisenstein series.

A note on the Gauss-Manin connection for abelian schemes

We study differential forms on the universal vector extension $A^\natural$ of an abelian scheme $A$ in characteristic zero, and derive a new construction of the $D$-group scheme structure on $A^\natural$. This gives, in particular, a rather simple description of the Gauss--Manin connection on the de Rham cohomology of $A$ in terms of global algebraic differential forms on $A^\natural$. The key ingredient is the computation of the coherent cohomology of $A^{\natural}$, due to Coleman and Laumon.

Iterated primitives of meromorphic quasimodular forms for $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$

We introduce and study iterated primitives of meromorphic quasimodular forms for $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$, generalizing work of Manin and Brown for holomorphic modular forms. We prove that the algebra of iterated primitives of meromorphic quasimodular forms is naturally isomorphic to a certain explicit shuffle algebra. We deduce from this an Ax--Lindemann--Weierstrass type algebraic independence criterion for primitives of meromorphic quasimodular forms which includes a recent result of Paşol--Zudilin as a special case. We also study spaces of meromorphic modular forms with restricted poles, generalizing results of Guerzhoy in the weakly holomorphic case.

Meromorphic modular forms and the three-loop equal-mass banana integral

We consider a class of differential equations for multi-loop Feynman integrals which can be solved to all orders in dimensional regularisation in terms of iterated integrals of meromorphic modular forms. We show that the subgroup under which the modular forms transform can naturally be identified with the monodromy group of a certain second-order differential operator. We provide an explicit decomposition of the spaces of modular forms into a direct sum of total derivatives and a basis of modular forms that cannot be written as derivatives of other functions, thereby generalising a result by one of the authors form the full modular group to arbitrary finite-index subgroups of genus zero. Finally, we apply our results to the two- and three-loop equal-mass banana integrals, and we obtain in particular for the first time complete analytic results for the higher orders in dimensional regularisation for the three-loop case, which involves iterated integrals of meromorphic modular forms.

Towards algebraic iterated integrals on elliptic curves via the universal vectorial extension

For an elliptic curve $E$ defined over a field $k\subset \mathbb C$, we study iterated path integrals of logarithmic differential forms on $E^\dagger$, the universal vectorial extension of $E$. These are generalizations of the classical periods and quasi-periods of $E$, and are closely related to multiple elliptic polylogarithms and elliptic multiple zeta values. Moreover, if $k$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb Q$, then these iterated integrals along paths between $k$-rational points are periods in the sense of Kontsevich--Zagier.

Elliptic multizetas and the elliptic double shuffle relations

We define an elliptic generating series whose coefficients, the elliptic multizetas, are related to the elliptic analogues of multiple zeta values introduced by Enriquez as the coefficients of his elliptic associator; both sets of coefficients lie in $\mathcal{O}(\mathfrak{H})$, the ring of functions on the Poincaré upper half-plane $\mathfrak H$. The elliptic multizetas generate a $\mathbb Q$-algebra $\mathcal{E}$ which is an elliptic analogue of the algebra of multiple zeta values. Working modulo $2πi$, we show that the algebra $\mathcal{E}$ decomposes into a geometric and an arithmetic part and study the precise relationship between the elliptic generating series and the elliptic associator defined by Enriquez. We show that the elliptic multizetas satisfy a double shuffle type family of algebraic relations similar to the double shuffle relations satisfied by multiple zeta values. We prove that these elliptic double shuffle relations give all algebraic relations among elliptic multizetas if (a) the classical double shuffle relations give all algebraic relations among multiple zeta values and (b) the elliptic double shuffle Lie algebra has a certain natural semi-direct product structure analogous to that established by Enriquez for the elliptic Grothendieck-Teichmüller Lie algebra.

On Ecalle's and Brown's polar solutions to the double shuffle equations modulo products

Two explicit sets of solutions to the double shuffle equations modulo products were introduced by Ecalle and Brown respectively. We place the two solutions into the same algebraic framework and compare them. We find that they agree up to and including depth four but differ in depth five by an explicit solution to the linearized double shuffle equations with an exotic pole structure.

An algebraic characterization of the Kronecker function

We characterize the generating series of extended period polynomials of normalized Hecke eigenforms for $\operatorname{PSL}_2(\mathbb Z)$ studied by Zagier in terms of the period relations and existence of a suitable factorization. For this we prove a characterization of the Kronecker function as the `fundamental solution' to the Fay identity.

Twisted elliptic multiple zeta values and non-planar one-loop open-string amplitudes

We consider a generalization of elliptic multiple zeta values, which we call twisted elliptic multiple zeta values. These arise as iterated integrals on an elliptic curve from which a rational lattice has been removed. At the cusp, twisted elliptic multiple zeta values are shown to degenerate to cyclotomic multiple zeta values in the same way as elliptic multiple zeta values degenerate to classical multiple zeta values. We investigate properties of twisted elliptic multiple zeta values and consider them in the context of the non-planar part of the four-point one-loop open-string amplitude.

Linear independence of indefinite iterated Eisenstein integrals

We prove linear independence of indefinite iterated Eisenstein integrals over the fraction field of the ring of formal power series $\mathbb{Z}[[q]]$. Our proof relies on a general criterium for linear independence of iterated integrals, which has been established by Deneufch{â}tel, Duchamp, Minh and Solomon. As a corollary, we obtain $\mathbb{C}$-linear independence of indefinite iterated Eisenstein integrals, which has applications to the study of elliptic multiple zeta values, as defined by Enriquez.

The meta-abelian elliptic KZB associator and periods of Eisenstein series

We compute the image of Enriquez' elliptic KZB associator in the (maximal) meta-abelian quotient of the fundamental Lie algebra of a once-punctured elliptic curve. Our main result is an explicit formula for this image in terms of Eichler integrals of Eisenstein series, and is analogous to Deligne's computation of the depth one quotient of the Drinfeld associator. We also show how to retrieve Zagier's extended period polynomials of Eisenstein series, as well as the values at zero of Beilinson--Levin's elliptic polylogarithms from the meta-abelian elliptic KZB associator.

Decomposition of elliptic multiple zeta values and iterated Eisenstein integrals

We describe a decomposition algorithm for elliptic multiple zeta values, which amounts to the construction of an injective map $ψ$ from the algebra of elliptic multiple zeta values to a space of iterated Eisenstein integrals. We give many examples of this decomposition, and conclude with a short discussion about the image of $ψ$. It turns out that the failure of surjectivity of $ψ$ is in some sense governed by period polynomials of modular forms.

On the algebraic structure of iterated integrals of quasimodular forms

We study the algebra $\mathcal{I}^{QM}$ of iterated integrals of quasimodular forms for $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$, which is the smallest extension of the algebra $QM_{\ast}$ of quasimodular forms, which is closed under integration. We prove that $\mathcal{I}^{QM}$ is a polynomial algebra in infinitely many variables, given by Lyndon words on certain monomials in Eisenstein series. We also prove an analogous result for the $M_{\ast}$-subalgebra $\mathcal{I}^{M}$ of $\mathcal{I}^{QM}$ of iterated integrals of modular forms.

Elliptic multiple zeta values and one-loop superstring amplitudes

We investigate iterated integrals on an elliptic curve, which are a natural genus-one generalization of multiple polylogarithms. These iterated integrals coincide with the multiple elliptic polylogarithms introduced by Brown and Levin when constrained to the real line. At unit argument they reduce to an elliptic analogue of multiple zeta values, whose network of relations we start to explore. A simple and natural application of this framework are one-loop scattering amplitudes in open superstring theory. In particular, elliptic multiple zeta values are a suitable language to express their low energy limit. Similar to the techniques available at tree-level, our formalism allows to completely automatize the calculation.
