Bifurcation of equilibrium forms of an elastic rod on a two-parameter Winkler foundation

We consider two-parameter bifurcation of equilibrium states of an elastic rod on a deformable foundation. Our main theorem shows that bifurcation occurs if and only if the linearization of our problem has nontrivial solutions. In fact our proof, based on the concept of the Brouwer degree, gives more, namely that from each bifurcation point there branches off a continuum of solutions.

The Index Bundle and Multiparameter Bifurcation for Discrete Dynamical Systems

We develop a $K$-theoretic approach to multiparameter bifurcation theory of homoclinic solutions of discrete non-autonomous dynamical systems from a branch of stationary solutions. As a byproduct we obtain a family index theorem for asymptotically hyperbolic linear dynamical systems which is of independent interest. In the special case of a single parameter, our bifurcation theorem weakens the assumptions in previous work by Pejsachowicz and the first author.

A K-theoretical Invariant and Bifurcation for Homoclinics of Hamiltonian Systems

We revisit a K-theoretical invariant that was invented by the first author some years ago for studying multiparameter bifurcation of branches of critical points of functionals. Our main aim is to apply this invariant to investigate bifurcation of homoclinic solutions of families of Hamiltonian systems which are parametrised by tori.

A Remark on Bifurcation of Fredholm Maps

We modify an argument for multiparameter bifurcation of Fredholm maps by Fitzpatrick and Pejsachowicz to strengthen results on the topology of the bifurcation set. Furthermore, we discuss an application to families of differential equations parameterised by Grassmannians.

Spectral flow and bifurcation for a class of strongly indefinite elliptic systems

We consider bifurcation of solutions from a given trivial branch for a class of strongly indefinite elliptic systems via the spectral flow. Our main results establish bifurcation invariants that can be obtained from the coefficients of the systems without using explicit solutions of their linearisations at the given branch. Our constructions are based on a comparison principle for the spectral flow and a generalisation of a bifurcation theorem due to Szulkin.

A family index theorem for periodic Hamiltonian systems and bifurcation

We prove an index theorem for families of linear periodic Hamiltonian systems, which is reminiscent of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for selfadjoint elliptic operators. For the special case of one-parameter families, we compare our theorem with a classical result of Salamon and Zehnder. Finally, we use the index theorem to study bifurcation of branches of periodic solutions for families of nonlinear Hamiltonian systems.

A Morse-Smale index theorem for indefinite elliptic systems and bifurcation

We generalise the semi-Riemannian Morse index theorem to elliptic systems of partial differential equations on star-shaped domains. Moreover, we apply our theorem to bifurcation from a branch of trivial solutions of semilinear systems, where the bifurcation parameter is introduced by shrinking the domain to a point. This extends recent results of the authors for scalar equations.

Spectral flow, crossing forms and homoclinics of Hamiltonian systems

We prove a spectral flow formula for one-parameter families of Hamiltonian systems under homoclinic boundary conditions, which relates the spectral flow to the relative Maslov index of a pair of curves of Lagrangians induced by the stable and unstable subspaces, respectively. Finally, we deduce sufficient conditions for bifurcation of homoclinic trajectories of one-parameter families of nonautonomous Hamiltonian vector fields.

On the space of connections having non-trivial twisted harmonic spinors

We consider Dirac operators on odd-dimensional compact spin manifolds which are twisted by a product bundle. We show that the space of connections on the twisting bundle which yield an invertible operator has infinitely many connected components if the untwisted Dirac operator is invertible and the dimension of the twisting bundle is sufficiently large.

On bifurcation for semilinear elliptic Dirichlet problems on shrinking domains

We consider the Dirichlet problem for semilinear elliptic equations on a bounded domain which is diffeomorphic to a ball and investigate bifurcation from a given (trivial) branch of solutions, where the radius of the ball serves as bifurcation parameter. Our methods are based on well known results from variational bifurcation theory, which we outline in a separate section for the readers' convenience.

A remark on singular sets of vector bundle morphisms

If a characteristic class for two vector bundles over the same base space does not coincide, then the bundles are not isomorphic. We give under rather common assumptions a lower bound on the topological dimension of the set of all points in the base over which a morphism between such bundles is not bijective. Moreover, we show that this set is topologically non-trivial.

Bifurcation of critical points for continuous families of C^2 functionals of Fredholm type

Given a continuous family of C^2 functionals of Fredholm type, we show that the non-vanishing of the spectral flow for the family of Hessians along a known (trivial) branch of critical points not only entails bifurcation of nontrivial critical points but also allows to estimate the number of bifurcation points along the branch. We use this result for several parameter bifurcation, estimating the number of connected components of the complement of the set of bifurcation points and apply our results to bifurcation of periodic orbits of Hamiltonian systems. By means of a comparison principle for the spectral flow, we obtain lower bounds for the number of bifurcation points of periodic orbits on a given interval in terms of the coefficients of the linearization.

Bifurcation results for critical points of families of functionals

Recently the first author studied the bifurcation of critical points of families of functionals on a Hilbert space, which are parametrised by a compact and orientable manifold having a non-vanishing first integral cohomology group. We improve this result in two directions: topologically and analytically. From the analytical point of view we generalise it to a broader class of functionals; from the topological point of view we allow the parameter space to be a metrisable Banach manifold. Our methods are in particular powerful if the parameter space is simply connected. As an application of our results we consider families of geodesics in (semi-) Riemannian manifolds.
