Plasmon-driven electron-hole pair formation in a non-equilibrium Fermi liquid

Collective modes in Fermi liquids are usually regarded as dissipation channels that relax electronic excitations through Landau damping. Whether such modes can instead mediate the formation of correlated electronic states under non-equilibrium conditions remains an open question. Here, we show that under optical photo-doping, a bulk plasmon can drive correlated inter-band transfer within a transient electronic continuum. Using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (Tr-ARPES) on EuCd$_2$As$_2$ supported by electronic structure calculations, we observe that at high excitation density, plasmons transfer energy from a weakly dispersing bulk band into unoccupied surface states. This bulk-to-surface redistribution stabilizes a long-lived, energy-localized spectral feature consistent with a Mahan exciton. Our results reveal a non-equilibrium regime of Fermi-liquid physics in which collective modes do not merely dissipate energy, but also stabilize correlated bound states.

Cu NMR study of lightly doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$

We present a single crystal Cu NMR study of the cuprate superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ with hole doping levels between $x=2$\% and $8$\%. Measurements with short spin echo times enable us to systematically study the local properties of the electronic spin system in the region of the phase diagram where the material evolves from the insulating antiferromagnetic parent phase to the superconducting state. We find evidence for qualitative changes as the Sr concentration increases through $x=5$\% in both NMR spectra and relaxation times, which we interpret as signatures of a low-temperature transition from a state with disconnected metallic islands to a granular metal with tunneling between the grains. These results provide microscopic insight into the physics of a doped charge-transfer insulator in the presence of quenched substitutional disorder, indicate that a connectivity transition occurs, and demonstrate that complex nanoscale electronic phase separation is ubiquitous in LSCO around the doping level where superconductivity first appears in the phase diagram.

Revealing the hidden Dirac gap in a topological antiferromagnet using Floquet-Bloch manipulation

Manipulating solids using the time-periodic drive of a laser pulse is a promising route to generate new phases of matter. Whether such `Floquet-Bloch' manipulation can be achieved in topological magnetic systems with disorder has so far been unclear. In this work, we realize Floquet-Bloch manipulation of the Dirac surface-state mass of the topological antiferromagnet (AFM) MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. Using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES), we show that opposite helicities of mid-infrared circularly polarized light result in substantially different Dirac mass gaps in the AFM phase, despite the equilibrium Dirac cone being massless. We explain our findings in terms of a Dirac fermion with a random mass. Our results underscore Floquet-Bloch manipulation as a powerful tool for controlling topology even in the presence of disorder, and for uncovering properties of materials that may elude conventional probes.

Observation of the massive Lee-Fukuyama phason in a charge density wave insulator

The lowest-lying fundamental excitation of an incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) material is widely believed to be a massless phason -- a collective modulation of the phase of the CDW order parameter. However, as first pointed out by Lee and Fukuyama, long-range Coulomb interactions should push the phason energy up to the plasma energy of the CDW condensate, resulting in a massive phason and a fully gapped spectrum. Whether such behavior occurs in a CDW system has been unresolved for more than four decades. Using time-domain THz emission spectroscopy, we investigate this issue in the material (TaSe$_4$)$_2$I, a classical example of a quasi-one-dimensional CDW insulator. Upon transient photoexcitation at low temperatures, we find the material strikingly emits coherent, narrow-band THz radiation. The frequency, polarization and temperature-dependence of the emitted radiation imply the existence of a phason that acquires mass by coupling to long-range Coulomb interaction. Our observations constitute the first direct evidence of the massive "Lee-Fukuyama" phason and highlight the potential applicability of fundamental collective modes of correlated materials as compact and robust sources of THz radiation.

Kramers-Weyl fermions in the chiral charge density wave material (TaSe$_4$)$_2$I

The quasi-one-dimensional chiral charge density wave (CDW) material (TaSe$_4$)$_2$I has been recently predicted to host Kramers-Weyl (KW) fermions which should exist in the vicinity of high symmetry points in the Brillouin zone in chiral materials with strong spin-orbit coupling. However, direct spectroscopic evidence of KW fermions is limited. Here we use helicity-dependent laser-based angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in conjunction with tight-binding and first-principles calculations to identify KW fermions in (TaSe$_4$)$_2$I. We find that topological and symmetry considerations place distinct constraints on the (pseudo-) spin texture and the observed spectra around a KW node. We further reveal an interplay between the spin texture around the chiral KW node and the onset of CDW order in (TaSe$_4$)$_2$I. Our findings highlight the unique topological nature of (TaSe$_4$)$_2$I and provide a pathway for identifying KW fermions in other chiral materials.
