Quantum Prisoner's Dilemma and High Frequency Trading on the Quantum Cloud

High-frequency trading (HFT) offers an excellent user case and a potential killer application of the commercially available, first generation quasi-quantum communication and computation technologies. To this end, we offer here a simple but complete game-theoretic model of HFT as the famous two player game, Prisoner's Dilemma. We explore the implementation of HFT as a game on the (quasi) quantum cloud using the Eisert, Wilkens, and Lewenstein quantum mediated communication protocol, and how this implementation can increase transaction speed and improve the lot of the players in HFT. Using cooperative game-theoretic reasoning, we also note that in the near future when the internet is properly quantum, players will be able to achieve Pareto-optimality in HFT as an instance of reinforced learning.

Black Hole Cannibalism

We consider a version of the Hayden-Preskill thought experiment in which the message thrown into the black hole is itself a smaller black hole. We then discuss the implications of the existence of a recovery channel for this black hole message at asymptotic infinity, resulting in a sharpening of the black hole information paradox for observers who never need to approach a horizon. We suggest decoherence mechanisms as a way of resolving this sharpened paradox.

Microstate Distinguishability, Quantum Complexity, and the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis

In this work, we use quantum complexity theory to quantify the difficulty of distinguishing eigenstates obeying the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH). After identifying simple operators with an algebra of low-energy observables and tracing out the complementary high-energy Hilbert space, the ETH leads to an exponential suppression of trace distance between the coarse-grained eigenstates. Conversely, we show that an exponential hardness of distinguishing between states implies ETH-like matrix elements. The BBBV lower bound on the query complexity of Grover search then translates directly into a complexity-theoretic statement lower bounding the hardness of distinguishing these reduced states.

Entangled quantum cellular automata, physical complexity, and Goldilocks rules

Cellular automata are interacting classical bits that display diverse emergent behaviors, from fractals to random-number generators to Turing-complete computation. We discover that quantum cellular automata (QCA) can exhibit complexity in the sense of the complexity science that describes biology, sociology, and economics. QCA exhibit complexity when evolving under "Goldilocks rules" that we define by balancing activity and stasis. Our Goldilocks rules generate robust dynamical features (entangled breathers), network structure and dynamics consistent with complexity, and persistent entropy fluctuations. Present-day experimental platforms -- Rydberg arrays, trapped ions, and superconducting qubits -- can implement our Goldilocks protocols, making testable the link between complexity science and quantum computation exposed by our QCA.

Bit threads on hypergraphs

Recent work has characterized the various inequalities that entanglement entropies represented by min-cuts on hypergraphs will satisfy. This collection, the hypergraph entropy cone, can be seen as a generalization of the holographic entropy cone which describes the entropies given by both min-cuts on 2-graphs and those of holographic states in AdS/CFT. In this article we describe a generalization of bit threads which allows us to describe max multiflows on hypergraphs. We further comment on its properties and interpretation in holography.

Hayden-Preskill decoding from noisy Hawking radiation

In the Hayden-Preskill thought experiment, the Hawking radiation emitted before a quantum state is thrown into the black hole is used along with the radiation collected later for the purpose of decoding the quantum state. A natural question is how the recoverability is affected if the stored early radiation is damaged or subject to decoherence, and/or the decoding protocol is imperfectly performed. We study the recoverability in the thought experiment in the presence of decoherence or noise in the storage of early radiation.

A toy model for decoherence in the black hole information problem

We investigate a plausible route to resolving the black hole information paradox by examining the effects of decoherence on Hawking radiation. In particular, we show that a finite but non-zero rate of decoherence can lead to efficient extraction of information from the evaporating black hole. This effectively pushes the paradox from becoming manifest at the Page time when the black hole has evaporated to half its size, to a timescale solely determined by the rate of decoherence. If this rate is due to a putative interaction with gravitons, the black hole at this timescale can be expected to be Planck-sized, but notably without an extensive amount of information packed inside. We justify our findings by numerically studying a toy model of stabilizer circuits that can efficiently model black hole evaporation in the presence of decoherence. The latter is found to be well described by an effective rate equation for the entanglement and which corroborates our findings.

Warping Wormholes with Dust: a Metric Construction of the Python's Lunch

We show how wormholes in three spacetime dimensions can be customizably warped using pressureless matter. In particular, we exhibit a large new class of solutions in (2+1)-dimensional general relativity with energy-momentum tensor describing a negative cosmological constant and positive-energy dust. From this class of solutions, we construct wormhole geometries and study their geometric and holographic properties, including Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces, entanglement wedge cross sections, mutual information, and outer entropy. Finally, we construct a Python's Lunch geometry: a wormhole in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space with a local maximum in size near its middle.

More of the Bulk from Extremal Area Variations

It was shown recently, building on work of Alexakis, Balehowksy, and Nachman that the geometry of (some portion of) a manifold with boundary is uniquely fixed by the areas of a foliation of two-dimensional disk-shaped surfaces anchored to the boundary. In the context of AdS/CFT, this implies that (a portion of) a four-dimensional bulk geometry can be fixed uniquely from the entanglement entropies of disk-shaped boundary regions, subject to several constraints. In this Note, we loosen some of these constraints, in particular allowing for the bulk foliation of extremal surfaces to be local and removing the constraint of disk topology; these generalizations ensure uniqueness of more of the deep bulk geometry by allowing for e.g. surfaces anchored on disconnected asymptotic boundaries, or HRT surfaces past a phase transition. We also explore in more depth the generality of the local foliation requirement, showing that even in a highly dynamical geometry like AdS-Vaidya it is satisfied.

Cosmological Decoherence from Thermal Gravitons

We study the effects of gravitationally-driven decoherence on tunneling processes associated with false vacuum decays, such as the Coleman--De~Luccia instanton. We compute the thermal graviton-induced decoherence rate for a wave function describing a perfect fluid of nonzero energy density in a finite region. When the effective cosmological constant is positive, the thermal graviton background sourced by a de Sitter horizon provides an unavoidable decoherence effect, which may have important consequences for tunneling processes in cosmological history. We discuss generalizations and consequences of this effect and comment on its observability and applications to black hole physics.

Bulk Reconstruction Beyond the Entanglement Wedge

We study the portion of an asymptotically Anti de Sitter geometry's bulk where the metric can be reconstructed, given the areas of minimal 2-surfaces anchored to a fixed boundary subregion. We exhibit situations in which this region can reach parametrically far outside of the entanglement wedge. If the setting is furthermore holographic, so that the bulk geometry is dual to a state in a conformal field theory (CFT), these minimal 2-surface areas can be deduced from the expectation values of operators localized within the boundary subregion. This presents us with an alternative: Either the reduced CFT state encodes significant information about the bulk beyond the entanglement wedge, challenging conventional intuition about holographic subregion duality; or the reduced CFT state fails to contain information about operators whose expectation values give the areas of minimal 2-surfaces anchored within that subregion, challenging conventional intuition about the holographic dictionary.

The Quantum Entropy Cone of Hypergraphs

In this work, we generalize the graph-theoretic techniques used for the holographic entropy cone to study hypergraphs and their analogously-defined entropy cone. This allows us to develop a framework to efficiently compute entropies and prove inequalities satisfied by hypergraphs. In doing so, we discover a class of quantum entropy vectors which reach beyond those of holographic states and obey constraints intimately related to the ones obeyed by stabilizer states and linear ranks. We show that, at least up to 4 parties, the hypergraph cone is identical to the stabilizer entropy cone, thus demonstrating that the hypergraph framework is broadly applicable to the study of entanglement entropy. We conjecture that this equality continues to hold for higher party numbers and report on partial progress on this direction. To physically motivate this conjectured equivalence, we also propose a plausible method inspired by tensor networks to construct a quantum state from a given hypergraph such that their entropy vectors match.

Beyond Toy Models: Distilling Tensor Networks in Full AdS/CFT

We present a general procedure for constructing tensor networks that accurately reproduce holographic states in conformal field theories (CFTs). Given a state in a large-$N$ CFT with a static, semiclassical gravitational dual, we build a tensor network by an iterative series of approximations that eliminate redundant degrees of freedom and minimize the bond dimensions of the resulting network. We argue that the bond dimensions of the tensor network will match the areas of the corresponding bulk surfaces. For 'tree' tensor networks (i.e., those that are constructed by discretizing spacetime with non-intersecting Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces), our arguments can be made rigorous using a version of one-shot entanglement distillation in the CFT. Using the known quantum error correcting properties of AdS/CFT, we show that bulk legs can be added to the tensor networks to create holographic quantum error correcting codes. These codes behave similarly to previous holographic tensor network toy models, but describe actual bulk excitations in continuum AdS/CFT. By assuming some natural generalizations of the 'holographic entanglement of purification' conjecture, we are able to construct tensor networks for more general bulk discretizations, leading to finer-grained networks that partition the information content of a Ryu-Takayanagi surface into tensor-factorized subregions. While the granularity of such a tensor network must be set larger than the string/Planck scales, we expect that it can be chosen to lie well below the AdS scale. However, we also prove a no-go theorem which shows that the bulk-to-boundary maps cannot all be isometries in a tensor network with intersecting Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces.

Multipartite Reflected Entropy

We discuss two methods that, through a combination of cyclically gluing copies of a given $n$-party boundary state in AdS/CFT and a canonical purification, creates a bulk geometry that contains a boundary homologous minimal surface with area equal to 2 or 4 times the $n$-party entanglement wedge cross-section, depending on the parity of the party number and choice of method. The areas of the minimal surfaces are each dual to entanglement entropies that we define to be candidates for the $n$-party reflected entropy. In the context of AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$, we provide a boundary interpretation of our construction as a multiboundary wormhole, and conjecture that this interpretation generalizes to higher dimensions.

Quantum algorithms for conformal bootstrap

With the help of recent developments in quantum algorithms for semidefinite programming, we discuss the possibility for quantum speedup for the numerical conformal bootstrap in conformal field theory. We show that quantum algorithms may have significant improvement in the computational performance for several numerical bootstrap problems.

Towards a Bit Threads Derivation of Holographic Entanglement of Purification

We apply the bit thread formulation of holographic entanglement entropy to reduced states describing only the geometry contained within an entanglement wedge. We argue that a certain optimized bit thread configuration, which we construct, gives a purification of the reduced state to a full holographic state obeying a precise set of conditional mutual information relations. When this purification exists, we establish, under certain assumptions, the conjectured $E_P = E_W$ relation equating the entanglement of purification with the area of the minimal cross section partitioning the bulk entanglement wedge. Along the way, we comment on minimal purifications of holographic states, geometric purifications, and black hole geometries.

Towards Bulk Metric Reconstruction from Extremal Area Variations

The Ryu-Takayanagi and Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi formulae suggest that bulk geometry emerges from the entanglement structure of the boundary theory. Using these formulae, we build on a result of Alexakis, Balehowsky, and Nachman to show that in four bulk dimensions, the entanglement entropies of boundary regions of disk topology uniquely fix the bulk metric in any region foliated by the corresponding HRT surfaces. More generally, for a bulk of any dimension $d \geq 4$, knowledge of the (variations of the) areas of two-dimensional boundary-anchored extremal surfaces of disk topology uniquely fixes the bulk metric wherever these surfaces reach. This result is covariant and not reliant on any symmetry assumptions; its applicability thus includes regions of strong dynamical gravity such as the early-time interior of black holes formed from collapse. While we only show uniqueness of the metric, the approach we present provides a clear path towards an explicit spacetime metric reconstruction.

The holographic dual of Rényi relative entropy

The relative entropy is a measure of the distinguishability of two quantum states. A great deal of progress has been made in the study of the relative entropy between an excited state and the vacuum state of a conformal field theory (CFT) reduced to a spherical region. For example, when the excited state is a small perturbation of the vacuum state, the relative entropy is known to have a universal expression for \textit{all} CFT's \cite{Faulk-GR-entanglement}. Specifically, the perturbative relative entropy can be written as the symplectic flux of a certain scalar field in an \textit{auxiliary} AdS-Rindler spacetime \cite{Faulk-GR-entanglement}. Moreover, if the CFT has a semi-classical holographic dual, the relative entropy is known to be related to conserved charges in the bulk dual spacetime \cite{lashkari2016gravitational}. In this paper, we introduce a one-parameter generalization of the relative entropy which we call \textit{refined} Rényi relative entropy. We study this quantity in CFT's and find a one-parameter generalization of the aforementioned known results about the relative entropy. We also discuss a new family of positive energy theorems in asymptotically locally AdS spacetimes that arises from the holographic dual of the refined Rényi relative entropy.
