Future prospects of mass-degenerate Higgs bosons in the $CP$-conserving two-Higgs-doublet model

The scenario of two mass-degenerate Higgs bosons within the general two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) is revisited. We focus on the global picture when two $CP$-even Higgs bosons of $h$ and $H$ are nearly mass-degenerate. A global fit to the signal strength of the 125 GeV Higgs measured at the LHC is performed. Based on the best-fit result of the 2HDM mixing angles $(α,β)$, theoretical constraints, charged and $CP$-odd Higgs boson direct search constraints and the electroweak precision constraints are imposed to the 2HDM parameter space. We present the signal predictions of the $(4b\,, 2b\,2γ)$ channels for the benchmark models at the LHC 14 TeV runs. We also study the direct Higgs boson pair productions at the LHC, and the Z-associated Higgs boson pair production search at the ILC 500 GeV runs, as well as the indirect probes at the CEPC 250 GeV run. We find that the mass-degenerate Higgs boson scenario in the Type-II 2HDM can be fully probed by these future experimental searches.

Message Passing Stein Variational Gradient Descent

Stein variational gradient descent (SVGD) is a recently proposed particle-based Bayesian inference method, which has attracted a lot of interest due to its remarkable approximation ability and particle efficiency compared to traditional variational inference and Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods. However, we observed that particles of SVGD tend to collapse to modes of the target distribution, and this particle degeneracy phenomenon becomes more severe with higher dimensions. Our theoretical analysis finds out that there exists a negative correlation between the dimensionality and the repulsive force of SVGD which should be blamed for this phenomenon. We propose Message Passing SVGD (MP-SVGD) to solve this problem. By leveraging the conditional independence structure of probabilistic graphical models (PGMs), MP-SVGD converts the original high-dimensional global inference problem into a set of local ones over the Markov blanket with lower dimensions. Experimental results show its advantages of preventing vanishing repulsive force in high-dimensional space over SVGD, and its particle efficiency and approximation flexibility over other inference methods on graphical models.

A Novel PMU Fog based Early Anomaly Detection for an Efficient Wide Area PMU Network

Based on phasor measurement units (PMUs), a synchronphasor system is widely recognized as a promising smart grid measurement system. It is able to provide high-frequency, high-accuracy phasor measurements sampling for Wide Area Monitoring and Control (WAMC) applications. However, the high sampling frequency of measurement data under strict latency constraints introduces new challenges for real time communication. It would be very helpful if the collected data can be prioritized according to its importance such that the existing quality of service (QoS) mechanisms in the communication networks can be leveraged. To achieve this goal, certain anomaly detection functions should be conducted by the PMUs. Inspired by the recent emerging edge-fog-cloud computing hierarchical architecture, which allows computing tasks to be conducted at the network edge, a novel PMU fog is proposed in this paper. Two anomaly detection approaches, Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA) and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), are evaluated in the PMU fog using the IEEE 16-machine 68-bus system. The simulation experiments based on Riverbed Modeler demonstrate that the proposed PMU fog can effectively reduce the data flow end-to-end (ETE) delay without sacrificing data completeness.

Higgs Pair Productions in the CP-violating Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

The SM-like Higgs pair productions are discussed in the framework of the general CP-violating two-Higgs-doublet model, where we find the CP-violating mixing angles can be related to the Higgs self couplings. Therefore, the future experimental searches for Higgs boson pairs can be constrained by the improved precision of the electric dipole moment measurements. Based on a series constraints of the SM-like Higgs boson signal fits, the perturbative unitarity and stability bounds to the Higgs potential, and the most recent LHC searches for the heavy Higgs bosons, we suggest a set of benchmark models for the future high-energy collider searches for the Higgs pair productions. The $e^+ e^-$ colliders operating at $\sqrt{s}=$ (500 GeV, 1 TeV) are capable of measuring the Higgs cubic self couplings of the benchmark models directly. We also estimate the cross sections of the resonance contributions to the Higgs pair productions for the benchmark models at the future LHC and SppC/Fcc-hh runs.

CP violation effects in the diphoton spectrum of heavy scalars

In a class of new physics models, an extended Higgs sector and new CP-violating sources are simultaneously present in order to explain the baryon asymmetry in the Universe. The aim of this work is to study the implications of beyond the Standard Model (SM) CP violation for the searches of heavy scalars at the LHC. In particular, we focus on the diphoton channel searches in the CP-violating two-Higgs-doublet model (CPV 2HDM). To have a sizable CPV in the scalar sector, the two heavy neutral scalars in 2HDM tend to be nearly degenerate. The theoretical constraints of unitarity, perturbativity and vacuum stability are considered, which requires that the heavy scalars $M_H \lesssim 1$ TeV in a large region of the parameter space. The experimental limits are also taken into account, including the direct searches of heavy neutral scalars in the final state of the SM $h$, $W$ and $Z$ bosons, the differential $t\bar{t}$ data, those from the charged scalar sector which is implied by the oblique $T$ parameter, as well as the precise measurements of the electric dipole moments of electron and mercury. The quantum interference effects between the resonances and the SM background are crucially important for the diphoton signals, and the CPV mixing of the quasi-degenerate heavy scalars could enhance significantly the resonance peak. With an integrated luminosity of 3000 fb$^{-1}$ at the LHC, almost the whole parameter space of CPV 2HDM could be probed in the diphoton channel, and the CPV could also be directly detected via the diphoton spectrum.

A Grassmannian Approach to Zero-Shot Learning for Network Intrusion Detection

One of the main problems in Network Intrusion Detection comes from constant rise of new attacks, so that not enough labeled examples are available for the new classes of attacks. Traditional Machine Learning approaches hardly address such problem. This can be overcome with Zero-Shot Learning, a new approach in the field of Computer Vision, which can be described in two stages: the Attribute Learning and the Inference Stage. The goal of this paper is to propose a new Inference Stage algorithm for Network Intrusion Detection. In order to attain this objective, we firstly put forward an experimental setup for the evaluation of the Zero-Shot Learning in Network Intrusion Detection related tasks. Secondly, a decision tree based algorithm is applied to extract rules for generating the attributes in the AL stage. Finally, using a representation of a Zero-Shot Class as a point in the Grassmann manifold, an explicit formula for the shortest distance between points in that manifold can be used to compute the geodesic distance between the Zero-Shot Classes which represent the new attacks and the Known Classes corresponding to the attack categories. The experimental results in the datasets KDD Cup 99 and NSL-KDD show that our approach with Zero-Shot Learning successfully addresses the Network Intrusion Detection problem.

SAM: Semantic Attribute Modulation for Language Modeling and Style Variation

This paper presents a Semantic Attribute Modulation (SAM) for language modeling and style variation. The semantic attribute modulation includes various document attributes, such as titles, authors, and document categories. We consider two types of attributes, (title attributes and category attributes), and a flexible attribute selection scheme by automatically scoring them via an attribute attention mechanism. The semantic attributes are embedded into the hidden semantic space as the generation inputs. With the attributes properly harnessed, our proposed SAM can generate interpretable texts with regard to the input attributes. Qualitative analysis, including word semantic analysis and attention values, shows the interpretability of SAM. On several typical text datasets, we empirically demonstrate the superiority of the Semantic Attribute Modulated language model with different combinations of document attributes. Moreover, we present a style variation for the lyric generation using SAM, which shows a strong connection between the style variation and the semantic attributes.

The cancellation mechanism in the predictions of electric dipole moments

The interpretation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe necessitates the CP violation beyond the Standard Model (SM). We present a general cancellation mechanism in the theoretical predictions of the electron electric dipole moments (EDM), quark chromo-EDMs, and Weinberg operators. A relative large CP violation in the Higgs sector is allowed by the current electron EDM constraint released by the ACME collaboration in 2013, and the recent $^{199}$Hg EDM experiment. The cancellation mechanism can be induced by the mass splitting of heavy Higgs bosons around $\sim\mathcal{O}(0.1-1)$ GeV, and the extent of the mass degeneracy determines the magnitude of the CP-violating phase. We explicate this point by investigating the CP-violating two-Higgs-doublet model and the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model. The cancellation mechanism is general when there are CP violation and mixing in the Higgs sector of new physics models. The CP-violating phases in this scenario can be excluded or detected by the projected $^{225}$Ra EDM experiments with precision reaching $\sim10^{-28}\,e\cdot{\rm cm}$, as well as the future colliders.

Observation of topological edge states of sound at a momentum away from the high-symmetry point

Topologically protected one-way transportation of sound, mimicking the topological properties of the condensed matter, has received greatly attentions. Thus far, the topological phases and the topological edge states of sound are yielded in the vicinity of the Dirac cones fixed at the high symmetric points of the Brillouin zone. Here, we present a new type of the phononic topological insulator in the square lattice with position-variational Dirac cones along the high symmetric lines. The emergence of such Dirac cones, characterized by the vortex structure in a momentum space, is attributed to the unavoidable band crossing protected by the mirror symmetry. By rotating the square columns, these Dirac points are lifted and a complete band gap is induced because of the mirror-symmetry-breaking. Along the topological domain wall between the phononic crystals (PhCs) with the distinct topological phases stemming from the mirror symmetry inversion, we obtain a topological edge state for the neutral scalar sound which is absence of the intrinsic polarization and is uncoupled from an external field. Within a wide rotational range of the square column, the topological edge state in our PhCs evolves from a gapless one into a gapped one with a robust edge transport against cavities and disorders. Our excellent results are promising for the exploration of the new topological phenomena in the PhCs beyond the hexagonal lattices. Furthermore, the flexibility of the rotational square columns provides an interesting platform for the design of tunable topological acoustic devices.

On Hierarchical Statistical Static Timing Analysis

Statistical static timing analysis deals with the increasing variations in manufacturing processes to reduce the pessimism in the worst case timing analysis. Because of the correlation between delays of circuit components, timing model generation and hierarchical timing analysis face more challenges than in static timing analysis. In this paper, a novel method to generate timing models for combinational circuits considering variations is proposed. The resulting timing models have accurate input-output delays and are about 80% smaller than the original circuits. Additionally, an accurate hierarchical timing analysis method at design level using pre-characterized timing models is proposed. This method incorporates the correlation between modules by replacing independent random variables to improve timing accuracy. Experimental results show that the correlation between modules strongly affects the delay distribution of the hierarchical design and the proposed method has good accuracy compared with Monte Carlo simulation, but is faster by three orders of magnitude.

Fast Statistical Timing Analysis for Circuits with Post-Silicon Tunable Clock Buffers

Post-Silicon Tunable (PST) clock buffers are widely used in high performance designs to counter process variations. By allowing delay compensation between consecutive register stages, PST buffers can effectively improve the yield of digital circuits. To date, the evaluation of manufacturing yield in the presence of PST buffers is only possible using Monte Carlo simulation. In this paper, we propose an alternative method based on graph transformations, which is much faster, more than 1000 times, and computes a parametric minimum clock period. It also identifies the gates which are most critical to the circuit performance, therefore enabling a fast analysis-optimization flow.

Statistical Timing Analysis for Latch-Controlled Circuits with Reduced Iterations and Graph Transformations

Level-sensitive latches are widely used in high- performance designs. For such circuits efficient statistical timing analysis algorithms are needed to take increasing process vari- ations into account. But existing methods solving this problem are still computationally expensive and can only provide the yield at a given clock period. In this paper we propose a method combining reduced iterations and graph transformations. The reduced iterations extract setup time constraints and identify a subgraph for the following graph transformations handling the constraints from nonpositive loops. The combined algorithms are very efficient, more than 10 times faster than other existing methods, and result in a parametric minimum clock period, which together with the hold time constraints can be used to compute the yield at any given clock period very easily.

On Timing Model Extraction and Hierarchical Statistical Timing Analysis

In this paper, we investigate the challenges to apply Statistical Static Timing Analysis (SSTA) in hierarchical design flow, where modules supplied by IP vendors are used to hide design details for IP protection and to reduce the complexity of design and verification. For the three basic circuit types, combinational, flip-flop-based and latch-controlled, we propose methods to extract timing models which contain interfacing as well as compressed internal constraints. Using these compact timing models the runtime of full-chip timing analysis can be reduced, while circuit details from IP vendors are not exposed. We also propose a method to reconstruct the correlation between modules during full-chip timing analysis. This correlation can not be incorporated into timing models because it depends on the layout of the corresponding modules in the chip. In addition, we investigate how to apply the extracted timing models with the reconstructed correlation to evaluate the performance of the complete design. Experiments demonstrate that using the extracted timing models and reconstructed correlation full-chip timing analysis can be several times faster than applying the flattened circuit directly, while the accuracy of statistical timing analysis is still well maintained.

Timing Model Extraction for Sequential Circuits Considering Process Variations

As semiconductor devices continue to scale down, process vari- ations become more relevant for circuit design. Facing such variations, statistical static timing analysis is introduced to model variations more accurately so that the pessimism in tra- ditional worst case timing analysis is reduced. Because all de- lays are modeled using correlated random variables, most statis- tical timing methods are much slower than corner based timing analysis. To speed up statistical timing analysis, we propose a method to extract timing models for flip-flop and latch based sequential circuits respectively. When such a circuit is used as a module in a hierarchical design, the timing model instead of the original circuit is used for timing analysis. The extracted timing models are much smaller than the original circuits. Ex- periments show that using extracted timing models accelerates timing verification by orders of magnitude compared to previ- ous approaches using flat netlists directly. Accuracy is main- tained, however, with the mean and standard deviation of the clock period both showing usually less than 1% error compared to Monte Carlo simulation on a number of benchmark circuits.

Steerable sound transport in a 3D acoustic network

Quasi-lossless and asymmetric sound transports, which are exceedingly desirable in various modern physical systems, are almost based on nonlinear or angular-momentum biasing effects with extremely high power levels and complex modulation schemes. A practical route for the steerable sound transport along any arbitrary acoustic pathway, especially in a 3D acoustic network, could revolutionize the sound power flow and the sound communication. Here, we design an acoustic device consisting of a regular-tetrahedral cavity with four cylindrical waveguides. A smaller regular-tetrahedral solid in this cavity is eccentrically emplaced to break its spatial symmetry. The numerical and experimental results show that the sound power flow can unimpededly transport between two waveguides away from the eccentric solid within a wide frequency range. Furthermore, in the vicinity of eigenmode, the sound waves from various waveguides can transport to different waveguides, respectively along the compressed and broadened pathways without mutually interference. Endowed with these quasi-lossless and asymmetric transport characteristics, we construct a 3D acoustic network, in which the sound power flow can flexibly propagate along arbitrary sound pathways defined by our acoustic devices with eccentrically-emplaced regular-tetrahedral solids.

Time-varying Bang-bang Property of Minimal Controls for Approximately Null-controllable Heat Equations

In this paper, optimal time control problems and optimal target control problems are studied for the approximately null-controllable heat equations. Compared with the existed results on these problems, the boundary of control variables are not constants but time varying functions. The time-varying bang-bang property for optimal time control problem, and an equivalence theorem for optimal control problem and optimal target problem are obtained.

Missing particle associated with two bottom quarks at the LHC: Mono-$b$ versus 2$b$ with razor variables

The extended Higgs sector, such as by a second Higgs doublet of type-II, provides portals to dark sector which contains missing particles at the LHC, e.g., dark matter (DM) particles. In this paper, working in the simplified model and taking into consideration the wide decay width effect of the mediator, we analyze the characteristic signatures of mono-$b$+MET and 2$b$+MET at the LHC. The latter signature was believed to be ineffective, while we found that, with the aid of razor shape analysis, it should be as important as the mono-$b$ signature. In the region of relatively low mediator mass (below a few hundred GeV), by requiring the signal to background ratio greater than a few percent, the 2$b$-tagged razor analysis has comparable sensitivity to the mono-$b$ search; it is even better for mediator lighter than $\sim 200$ GeV.

The LHC searches for heavy neutral Higgs bosons by jet substructure analysis

The two-Higgs-doublet model contains extra Higgs bosons, with mass ranges spanning from several hundred GeV to about 1 TeV. We study the possible experimental searches for the neutral Higgs bosons of $A$ and $H$ at the future high-luminosity LHC runs. Besides of the conventional search modes that are inspired by the supersymmetric models, we discuss two search modes which were not quite addressed previously. They are the decay modes of $A\to hZ$ and $A/H \to t \bar t$. Thanks to the technique of tagging boosted objects of SM-like Higgs bosons and top quarks, we show the improved mass reaches for heavy neutral Higgs bosons with masses up to $\sim{\cal O}(1)\,\TeV$. The modes proposed here are complementary to the conventional experimental searches motivated by the MSSM.
