Robust room temperature ferromagnetism in an itinerant van der Waals antiferromagnet

The coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic order at room temperature in single-phase van der Waals materials, particularly within the two-dimensional limit, has attracted significant research interest. Nonetheless, such materials are rare. In this work, we introduce an itinerant van der Waals antiferromagnet (Fe0.56Co0.44)5GeTe2, where the ferromagnetic order of its exfoliated flakes remains discernible up to room temperature, extending down to the monolayer limit. A notable phenomenon observed is the evident odd-even layer-number effect at high temperature (e.g., T = 150 K). Such behaviour can be expounded by a linear-chain model. Of particular interest is the robust ferromagnetic order observed in even-layer flakes at low temperature (e.g., T = 2 K), which could potentially be attributed to spin-polarized defects. The intricate interplay among magnetic field strength, layer number, and temperature gives rise to a diverse array of phenomena, holding promise not only for new physics but also for practical applications.

KD-EKF: A Consistent Cooperative Localization Estimator Based on Kalman Decomposition

In this paper, we revisit the inconsistency problem of EKF-based cooperative localization (CL) from the perspective of system decomposition. By transforming the linearized system used by the standard EKF into its Kalman observable canonical form, the observable and unobservable components of the system are separated. Consequently, the factors causing the dimension reduction of the unobservable subspace are explicitly isolated in the state propagation and measurement Jacobians of the Kalman observable canonical form. Motivated by these insights, we propose a new CL algorithm called KD-EKF which aims to enhance consistency. The key idea behind the KD-EKF algorithm involves perform state estimation in the transformed coordinates so as to eliminate the influencing factors of observability in the Kalman observable canonical form. As a result, the KD-EKF algorithm ensures correct observability properties and consistency. We extensively verify the effectiveness of the KD-EKF algorithm through both Monte Carlo simulations and real-world experiments. The results demonstrate that the KD-EKF outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of accuracy and consistency.

Two Distinct Charge Density Wave Orders and Emergent Superconductivity in Pressurized CuTe

The discovery of multiple charge-density-wave (CDW) orders in superconducting cuprates and Kagome CsV3Sb5 has offered a unique milieu for studying the interplay of CDW and superconductivity and altered our perspective on their nature. Here, we report a high-pressure study of quasi-one-dimensional CDW material CuTe through ultralow-temperature (400 mK) electrical transport and temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations. We provide solid evidence that the pristine CDW order (CDW1) transforms into a distinct CDW order (CDW2) at ~6.5 GPa. Calculations show that the driving force of CDW1 is due to the nesting effect and that of CDW2 probably arises from the electronic correlated interaction. Strikingly, pressure-induced superconductivity is observed with a dome-like phase diagram and its transition displays an extraordinary broadening along with the crossover from CDW1 to CDW2. These results demonstrate that pressurized CuTe provides a promising playground for understanding the intricated interplay of multiple CDWs and superconductivity.

Pressure Tuned 2D Superconductivity in Black Phosphorus

This paper examines the micro-parameters of superconductors. It studies the modulations from weak van der Waals interaction to strong covalence bonding of superconductors. In particular, we studied layered black phosphorus (BP) as a function of pressure. These results reveal a rich scenario of phase transitions and related quantum phenomena, which show that the phases exhibit superconducting states at a pressure higher than 5.0 GPa. In addition, they indicate an angle-dependent upper critical field that demonstrates the dimensional characteristics of superconductivities. This result suggests that the A17 and cubic phases are three-dimensional (3D). The A7 phase shows a two-dimensional (2D) character. The 2D behavior is related to a weakened, distorted, entangled interlayer coupling.

Stealth Majorana Zero Mode in a Trilayer Heterostructure MnTe/Bi2Te3/Fe(Te,Se)

Recent experiment reported the robust zero-energy states with strange properties in a trilayer heterostructure MnTe/Bi2Te3/Fe(Te,Se). Here, we give comprehensive understandings about the magnetic and electronic properties of the heterostructure, and propose ferromagnetic Mn-Bi antisite defects are generated in the topmost sublayer of Bi2Te3 and hidden below the MnTe layer. We further reveal the defect can induce two types of quasiparticles. One is Yu-Shiba-Rusinov state from defect itself, and another is Majorana zero mode from the superconducting phase domain wall induced by the defect. The two types of quasiparticles have very different response to magnetic field, temperature etc. The coexistence and mutual cooperation of both can explain experimental observations. Furthermore, we propose more simple heterostructure with superiority to generate and finely modulate Majorana zero modes.

Spin-Dependent High-Order Topological Insulator and Two Types of Distinct Corner Modes in Monolayer FeSe/GdClO Heterostructure

We propose that a spin-dependent second-order topological insulator can be realized in monolayer FeSe/GdClO heterostructure, in which substrate GdClO helps to stabilize and enhance the antiferromagnetic order in FeSe. The second-order topological insulator is free from spin-orbit coupling and in-plane magnetic field. We also find that there exist two types of distinct corner modes residing in intersections of two ferromagnetic edges and two antiferromagnetic edges, respectively. The underlying physics for ferromagnetic corner mode follows a sublattice-chirality-kink picture. More interestingly, ferromagnetic corner mode shows spin-dependent property, which is also robust against spin-orbit coupling. Unexpectedly, antiferromagnetic corner mode can be taken as a typical emergent and hierarchical phenomenon from an array of ferromagnetic corner modes. Remarkably, antiferromagnetic corner modes violate general kink picture and can be understood as bound states of a one-dimensional Schrodinger equation under a connected potential well. Our findings not only provide a promising second-order topological insulator in electronic materials, but uncover some new properties of corner modes in high-order topological insulator.

Ferromagnetic Impurity Induced Majorana Zero Mode in Iron-Based Superconductor

Recent experiments reported the puzzling zero energy modes associated with ferromagnetic impurities in some iron-based superconductors with topological band structures. Here, we show that the sufficiently strong exchange coupling between a ferromagnetic impurity and substrate can trigger a quantum phase transition, beyond which, the phase of the topological surface superconducting order parameter around the impurity acquires a sign-change. In such a case, we prove that a Kramers degenerate pair of Majorana modes can be induced at the boundary separating the two sign-change regimes and trapped around the impurity in the topological surface superconducting state. Furthermore, we show that our theory can explain the controversial observations and confusing features of the zero energy modes from recent experiments in some iron-based superconductors.

Unconventional ferromagnetism and spin-triplet superconductivity in the imbalanced Kagome-lattice Hubbard model

Unconventional ferromagnetism and superconductivity in the imbalanced kagome-lattice Hubbard model are investigated by the mean-field theory and determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. Due to the asymmetric band structure of kagome lattice, the spin-$z$ ferromagnetic order intrinsically exists in the system, which is first enhanced by the interaction, and then continuously destructed after reaching a maximum at a moderate interaction strength. In contrast, the $xy$-plane ferromagnetism develops only above a critical interaction, which is estimated to be $U_c/t=3.65 \pm 0.05$ by finite-size scaling. We further verify the nature of the above transverse magnetic transition, and demonstrate it belongs to the three-dimensional $XY$ universality class. Finally, we study the superconducting property, and reveal the possible superconducting state has a triplet $f$-wave pairing symmetry. Our results uncover the exotic quantum states induced by the interactions on kagome lattice, and provide important insights regarding the interplay between electronic correlations and geometry frustrations.

Quadratic Discriminant Analysis by Projection

Discriminant analysis, including linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA), is a popular approach to classification problems. It is well known that LDA is suboptimal to analyze heteroscedastic data, for which QDA would be an ideal tool. However, QDA is less helpful when the number of features in a data set is moderate or high, and LDA and its variants often perform better due to their robustness against dimensionality. In this work, we introduce a new dimension reduction and classification method based on QDA. In particular, we define and estimate the optimal one-dimensional (1D) subspace for QDA, which is a novel hybrid approach to discriminant analysis. The new method can handle data heteroscedasticity with number of parameters equal to that of LDA. Therefore, it is more stable than the standard QDA and works well for data in moderate dimensions. We show an estimation consistency property of our method, and compare it with LDA, QDA, regularized discriminant analysis (RDA) and a few other competitors by simulated and real data examples.

Superconducting pairing symmetry in the kagome-lattice Hubbard model

The dominating superconducting pairing symmetry of the kagome-lattice Hubbard model is investigated using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. The superconducting instability occurs when doping the correlated insulators formed by the Hubbard interaction near the Dirac filling, and the superconducting state exhibits an electron-hole asymmetry. Among the pairing symmetries allowed, we demonstrate that the dominating channel is d-wave in the hole-doped case. This opens the possibility of condensation into an unconventional $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$ phase, which is characterized by an integer topological invariant and gapless edge states. In contrast, the $s^*$-wave channel, which has no change of sign in the pairing function, is favored by electron doping. We further find the dominating $s^*$-wave pairing persists up to the Van Hove singularity. The results are closely related to the recent experimental observations in kagome compounds AV3Sb5(A: K, Rb, Cs), and provide insight into the pairing mechanism of their superconducting states.

Phonon-mediated superconductivity in two-dimensional hydrogenated phosphorus carbide: HPC$_{3}$

In the recent years, three-dimensional (3D) high-temperature superconductors at ultrahigh pressure have been reported, typical examples are the polyhydrides H$_{3}$S, LaH$_{10}$, and YH$_{9}$, etc. To find high-temperature superconductors in two-dimensional (2D) at atmosphere pressure is another research hotspot. Here, we investigated the possible superconductivity in a hydrogenated monolayer phosphorus carbide based on first-principles calculations. The results reveal that monolayer PC$_{3}$ transforms from a semiconductor to a metal after hydrogenation. Interestingly, the C-$π$-bonding band contributes most to the states at the Fermi level. Based on the electron-phonon coupling mechanism, it is found that the electron-phonon coupling constant of HPC$_{3}$ is 0.95, which mainly origins from the coupling of C-$π$ electrons with the in-plane vibration modes of C and H. The calculated critical temperature $T_{c}$ is 31.0 K, which is higher than most of the 2D superconductors. By further applying biaxial tensile strain of 3$\%$, the $T_{c}$ can be boosted to 57.3 K, exceeding the McMillan limit. Thus, hydrogenation and strain are effective ways for increasing the superconducting $T_{c}$ of 2D materials.

Phase-manipulation-induced Majorana Mode and Braiding Realization in Iron-based Superconductor Fe(Te,Se)

Recent experiment reported the evidence of dispersing one-dimensional Majorana mode trapped by the crystalline domain walls in FeSe$_{0.45}$Te$_{0.55}$. Here, we perform the first-principles calculations to show that iron atoms in the domain wall spontaneously form the ferromagnetic order in line with orientation of the wall. The ferromagnetism can impose a $π$ phase difference between the domain-wall-separated surface superconducting regimes under the appropriate width and magnetization of the wall. Accordingly, the topological surface superconducting state of FeSe$_{0.45}$Te$_{0.55}$ can give rise to one-dimensional Majorana modes trapped by the wall. More interestingly, we further propose a surface junction in the form of FeSe$_{0.45}$Te$_{0.55}$/ferromagnet/FeSe$_{0.45}$Te$_{0.55}$, which can be adopted to create and fuse the Majorana zero modes through controlling the width or magnetization of the interior ferromagnetic barrier. The braiding and readout of Majorana zero modes can be realized by the designed device. Such surface junction has the potential application in the superconducting topological quantum computation.

Giant Inverse Rashba-Edelstein Effect: Application to Monolayer OsBi$_2$

We propose that the hybridization between two sets of Rashba bands can lead to an unconventional topology where the two Fermi circles from different bands own in-plane helical spin textures with the same chiralities, and possess group velocities with the same directions. Under the weak spin injection, the two Fermi circles both give the positive contributions to the spin-to-charge conversion and thus induce the giant inverse Rashba-Edelstein Effect with large conversion efficiency, which is very different from the conventional Rashba-Edelstein Effect. More importantly, through the first-principles calculations, we predict that monolayer OsBi2 could be a good candidate to realize the giant inverse Rashba-Edelstein Effect. Our studies not only demonstrate a new mechanism to achieve highly efficient spin-to-charge conversion in spintronics, but also provide a promising material to realize it.

The soft-mode phonons mediated unconventional superconductivity in monolayer 1T'-WTe2

Recent experiments have tuned the monolayer 1T'-WTe2 to be superconducting by electrostatic gating. Here, we theoretically study the phonon-mediated superconductivity in monolayer 1T'-WTe2 via charge doping. We reveal that the emergence of soft-mode phonons with specific momentum is crucial to give rise to the superconductivity in electron-doping regime, whereas no such soft-mode phonons and no superconductivity emerge in hole-doping regime. We also find a superconducting dome, which can be attributed to the change of Fermi surface nesting condition as electron doping. By taking into account the experimentally established strong anisotropy of temperature-dependent upper critical field H_{c2} between the in-plane and out-of-plane directions, we show that the superconducting state probably has the unconventional equal-spin-triplet pairing in A_{u} channel of C_{2h} point group. Our studies provide a promising understanding to the doping dependent superconductivity and strong anisotropy of H_{c2} in monolayer 1T'-WTe2.

Temperature-Induced Lifshitz Transition and Possible Excitonic Instability in ZrSiSe

The nodal-line semimetals have attracted immense interest due to the unique electronic structures such as the linear dispersion and the vanishing density of states as the Fermi energy approaching the nodes. Here, we report temperature-dependent transport and scanning tunneling microscope (spectroscopy) (STM[S]) measurements on nodal-line semimetal ZrSiSe.Our experimental results and theoretical analyses consistently demonstrate that the temperature induces Lifshitz transitions at 80 and 106 K in ZrSiSe, which results in the transport anomalies at the same temperatures. More strikingly, we observe a V-shaped dip structure around Fermi energy from the STS spectrum at low temperature, which can be attributed to co-effect of the spin-orbit coupling and excitonic instability. Our observations indicate the correlation interaction may play an important role in ZrSiSe, which owns the quasi-two-dimensional electronic structures.

A super scalable algorithm for short segment detection

In many applications such as copy number variant (CNV) detection, the goal is to identify short segments on which the observations have different means or medians from the background. Those segments are usually short and hidden in a long sequence, and hence are very challenging to find. We study a super scalable short segment (4S) detection algorithm in this paper. This nonparametric method clusters the locations where the observations exceed a threshold for segment detection. It is computationally efficient and does not rely on Gaussian noise assumption. Moreover, we develop a framework to assign significance levels for detected segments. We demonstrate the advantages of our proposed method by theoretical, simulation, and real data studies.

Inelastic electron tunneling in 2H-Ta$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$Se$_2$ evidenced by scanning tunneling spectroscopy

We report a detailed study of tunneling spectra measured on 2H-Ta$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$Se$_2$ ($x=0\sim 0.1$) single crystals using a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The prominent gap-like feature unintelligible for a long time was found to be accompanied by some "in-gap" fine structures. By investigating the second-derivative spectra and their temperature and magnetic field dependencies, we were able to prove that inelastic electron tunneling is the origin of these features and obtain the Eliashberg function of 2H-Ta$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$Se$_2$ at atomic scale, providing a potential way to study the local Eliashberg function and phonon spectra of the related transition-metal dichalcogenides.

Superconductivity Induced at a Point Contact on the Topological Semimetal Tungsten Carbide

We report the observation of local superconductivity induced at the point contact formed between a normal metal tip and WC -- a triple point topological semimetal with super hardness. Remarkably, the maximum critical temperature is up to near 12 K but insensitive to the tip's magnetism. The lateral dimensions of the superconducting puddles were evaluated and the temperature dependencies of superconducting gap and upper critical field were also obtained. These results put constraints on the explanation of the induced superconductivity and pave a pathway for exploring topological superconductivity.
