Myoelectric Control of Artificial Limb Inspired by Quantum Information Processing

Precise and elegant coordination of a prosthesis across many degrees of freedom represents a significant challenge to efficient rehabilitation of people with limb deficiency. Processing the electrical neural signals, collected from the surface of the remnant muscles of the stump, is a common way to initiate and control the different movements available to the artificial limb. Based on the assumption that there are distinguishable and repeatable signal patterns among different types of muscular activation, the problem of the prosthesis control reduces to one of pattern recognition. Widely accepted classical methods for pattern recognition, however, cannot provide simultaneous and proportional control of the artificial limb. Here we show that, in principle, quantum information processing of the neural signals allows us to overcome the above-mentioned difficulties suggesting a very simple scheme for myoelectric control of artificial limb with advanced functionalities.

Is BZB J1450+5201 the most distant $γ$-ray BL Lacertae object?

BL Lacertae (BL Lac) objects at high redshifts ($z\geq 2$) are rarely detected. Through careful analysis of the SDSS spectrum, BZB J1450+5201 is confirmed to be a high-$z$ BL Lac object with $z\geq$ 2.471 by identifying the Ly$α$ 1216 and CIV 1548/1550 absorption lines. This indicates that BZB J1450+5201 is the most distant BL Lac object discovered to date. Careful analysis of the five-year \fermi data of 2FGL J1451.0+5159 shows that its $γ$-ray emission is robust with confidence level of 6.2$σ$ at 1-3 GeV and 6.7$σ$ at 3-10 GeV, and that the confusion of bright neighbor is negligible, which can not be fixed in the analysis of the two-year data. Meanwhile, 2FGL J1451.0+5159 is confirmed to be associated with BZB J1450+5201 using the five-year data. The analysis of multiwavelength data, from radio to $γ$-ray energies, indicates BZB J1450+5201 is an intermediate synchrotron peaked (ISP) source and consistent with distributions of other ISP sources at lower redshifts in the second LAT AGN catalog. The pure SSC model seems to be disfavoured, while scattering of weak external emission plus SSC process can provide a satisfactory description of the broadband emission.

On Analytic Solutions of the Prandtl Equations with Robin Boundary Condition in Half Space

The existence and uniqueness of the analytic solutions to the nonlinear Prandtl equations with Robin boundary condition on a half space are proved, based on an application of abstract Cauchy-Kowalewski theorem. These equations arise in the inviscid limit of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Navier-slip boundary condition in which the slip length is square root of viscosity, as formally derived in [26].

Zero viscosity and thermal diffusivity limit of the linearized compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations in the half plane

We study the zero viscosity and heat conductivity limit of an initial boundary problem for the linearized Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations of a compressible viscous and heat conducting fluid in the half plane. We consider the case that the viscosity and thermal diffusivity converge to zero at the same order. The approximate solution of the linearized Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations with inner and boundary expansion terms is analyzed formally first by multiscale analysis. Then the pointwise estimates of the error terms of the approximate solution are obtained by energy methods, thus establish the uniform stability for the linearized Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations in the zero viscosity and heat conductivity limit. This work is based on \cite{xy} and generalize the results from isentropic case to the general compressible fluid with thermal diffusive effect. Besides the viscous layer as in \cite{xy}, thermal layer appears and coupled with the viscous layer linearly.

Incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier Limit from The Boltzmann Equation: Classical Solutions

The global classical solution to the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equation with small initial data in the whole space is constructed through a zero Knudsen number limit from the solutions to the Boltzmann equation with general collision kernels. The key point is the uniform estimate of the Sobolev norm on the global solutions to the Boltzmann equation.

UM 625 Revisited: Multiwavelength Study of A Seyfert 1 Galaxy with a Low-mass Black Hole

UM 625, previously identified as a narrow-line active galactic nucleus (AGN), actually exhibits broad \ha\ and \hb\ lines whose width and luminosity indicate a low black hole mass of $1.6 \times 10^6$ \msun. We present a detailed multiwavelength study of the nuclear and host galaxy properties of UM 625. Analysis of \chandra\ and \xmm\ observations suggests that this system contains a heavily absorbed and intrinsically X-ray weak ($\aox=-1.72$) nucleus. Although not strong enough to qualify as radio-loud, UM 625 does belong to a minority of low-mass AGNs detected in the radio. The broad-band spectral energy distribution constrains the bolometric luminosity to $\lbol\approx(0.5-3)\times10^{43}$ \lum\ and $\lratio\approx0.02-0.15$. A comprehensive analysis of Sloan Digital Sky Survey and {\it Hubble Space Telescope}\ images shows that UM 625 is a nearly face-on S0 galaxy with a prominent, relatively blue pseudobulge (\sersic\ index $n = 1.60$) that accounts for $\sim$60% of the total light in the $R$ band. The extended disk is featureless, but the central $\sim150-400$ pc contains a conspicuous semi-ring of bright, blue star-forming knots, whose integrated ultraviolet luminosity suggests a star formation rate of $\sim$0.3 \msun yr$^{-1}$. The mass of the central black hole roughly agrees with the value predicted from its bulge velocity dispersion but is significantly lower than that expected from its bulge luminosity.

Rapid Infrared Variability of Three Radio-loud Narrow-line Seyfert 1 Galaxies: A View from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer

Using newly released data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, we report the discovery of rapid infrared variability in three radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) selected from the 23 sources in the sample of Yuan et al. (2008). J0849+5108 and J0948+0022 clearly show intraday variability, while J1505+0326 has a longer measurable time scale within 180 days. Their variability amplitudes, corrected for measurement errors, are $\sim 0.1-0.2$ mag. The detection of intraday variability restricts the size of the infrared-emitting region to $\sim 10^{-3}$ pc, significantly smaller than the scale of the torus but consistent with the base of a jet. The three variable sources are exceptionally radio-loud, have the highest radio brightness temperature among the whole sample, and all show detected $γ$-ray emission in Fermi/LAT observations. Their spectral energy distributions resemble those of low-energy-peaked blazars, with a synchrotron peak around infrared wavelengths. This result strongly confirms the view that at least some radio-loud NLS1s are blazars with a relativistic jet close to our line of sight. The beamed synchrotron emission from the jet contributes significantly to and probably dominates the spectra in the infrared and even optical bands.

A Uniformly Selected Sample of Low-mass Black Holes in Seyfert 1 Galaxies

We have conducted a systematic search of low-mass black holes (BHs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with broad Halpha emission lines, aiming at building a homogeneous sample that is more complete than previous ones for fainter, less highly accreting sources. For this purpose, we developed a set of elaborate, automated selection procedures and applied it uniformly to the Fourth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Special attention is given to AGN--galaxy spectral decomposition and emission-line deblending. We define a sample of 309 type 1 AGNs with BH masses in the range $8 \times 10^4$--$2 \times 10^6$ \msun (with a median of $1.2 \times 10^6$ solar mass), using the virial mass estimator based on the broad Halpha line. About half of our sample of low-mass BHs differs from that of Greene & Ho, with 61 of them discovered here for the first time. Our new sample picks up more AGNs with low accretion rates: the Eddington ratios of the present sample range from $<~0.01$ to ~1, with 30% below 0.1. This suggests that a significant fraction of low-mass BHs in the local Universe are accreting at low rates. The host galaxies of the low-mass BHs have luminosities similar to those of $L^*$ field galaxies, optical colors of Sbc spirals, and stellar spectral features consistent with a continuous star formation history with a mean stellar age of less than 1 Gyr.

Remarks on the Acoustic Limit for the Boltzmann Equation

We use some new nonlinear estimates found in \cite {LM} to improve the results of \cite{GL} that establish the acoustic limit for DiPerna-Lions solutions of Boltzmann equation in three ways. First, we enlarge the class of collision kernels treated to that found in \cite{LM}, thereby treating all classical collision kernels to which the DiPerna-Lions theory applies. Second, we improve the scaling of the kinetic density fluctuations with Knudsen number from $O(ε^m)$ for some $m>\frac12$ to $O(ε^\frac12)$. Third, we extend the results from periodic domains to bounded domains with impermeable boundaries, deriving the boundary condition for the acoustic system.

Acoustic limit of the Boltzmann equation: classical solutions

We study the acoustic limit from the Boltzmann equation in the framework of classical solutions. For a solution $F_\varepsilon=μ+\varepsilon \sqrtμf_\varepsilon$ to the rescaled Boltzmann equation in the acoustic time scaling \partial_t F_\varepsilon +\vgrad F_\varepsilon =\frac{1}{\varepsilon} \Q(F_\varepsilon,F_\varepsilon), inside a periodic box $\mathbb{T}^3$, we establish the global-in-time uniform energy estimates of $f_\varepsilon$ in $\varepsilon$ and prove that $f_\varepsilon$ converges strongly to $f$ whose dynamics is governed by the acoustic system. The collision kernel $\Q$ includes hard-sphere interaction and inverse-power law with an angular cutoff.

Weakly Nonlinear-Dissipative Approximations of Hyperbolic-Parabolic Systems with Entropy

Hyperbolic-parabolic systems have spatially homogenous stationary states. When the dissipation is weak, one can derive weakly nonlinear-dissipative approximations that govern perturbations of these constant states. These approximations are quadratically nonlinear. When the original system has an entropy, the approximation is formally dissipative in a natural Hilbert space. We show that when the approximation is strictly dissipative it has global weak solutions for all initial data in that Hilbert space. We also prove a weak-strong uniqueness theorem for it. In addition, we give a Kawashima type criterion for this approximation to be strictly dissipative. We apply the theory to the compressible Navier-Stokes system.

Acoustic Limit for the Boltzmann equation in Optimal Scaling

Based on a recent $L^{2}{-}L^{\infty}$ framework, we establish the acoustic limit of the Boltzmann equation for general collision kernels. The scaling of the fluctuations with respect to Knudsen number is optimal. Our approach is based on a new analysis of the compressible Euler limit of the Boltzmann equation, as well as refined estimates of Euler and acoustic solutions.
