On the initial-boundary value problem of two-phase incompressible flows with variable density in smooth bounded domain

In this work, we study the so-called Allen-Cahn-Navier-Stokes equations, a diffuse-interface model for two-phase incompressible flows with different densities. We first prove the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions with finite initial energy over the smooth bounded domain $Ω$. The key point is to transform the boundary values of the higher order spatial derivatives to that of the higher order time derivatives by employing the well-known Agmon-Douglis-Nireberg theory in [6]. We then prove global existence near the equilibrium $(0, \pm 1)$ and justify the time exponetial decay $e^{- c_\# t}$ of the global solution. The majority is that the derivative $f'(ϕ)$ of the physical relevant energy density $f(ϕ)$ will generate an additional damping effect under the perturbation $ϕ= φ\pm 1$.

SN2017egm: A Helium-rich Superluminous Supernova with Multiple Bumps in the Light Curves

When discovered, SN~2017egm was the closest (redshift $z=0.03$) hydrogen-poor superluminous supernova (SLSN-I) and a rare case that exploded in a massive and metal-rich galaxy. Thus, it has since been extensively observed and studied. We report spectroscopic data showing strong emission at around He~I $λ$10,830 and four He~I absorption lines in the optical. Consequently, we classify SN~2017egm as a member of an emerging population of helium-rich SLSNe-I (i.e., SLSNe-Ib). We also present our late-time photometric observations. By combining them with archival data, we analyze high-cadence ultra-violet, optical, and near-infrared light curves spanning from early pre-peak ($\sim -20\,d$) to late phases ($\sim +300\,d$). We obtain its most complete bolometric light curve, in which multiple bumps are identified. None of the previously proposed models can satisfactorily explain all main light-curve features, while multiple interactions between the ejecta and circumstellar material (CSM) may explain the undulating features. The prominent infrared excess with a blackbody luminosity of $10^7$--$10^8\,L_{sun}$ detected in SN~2017egm could originate from the emission of either an echo of a pre-existing dust shell, or newly-formed dust, offering an additional piece of evidence supporting the ejecta-CSM interaction model. Moreover, our analysis of deep $Chandra$ observations yields the tightest-ever constraint on the X-ray emission of an SLSN-I, amounting to an X-ray-to-optical luminosity ratio $\lesssim 10^{-3}$ at late phases ($\sim100-200\,d$), which could help explore its close environment and central engine.

MADI: Inter-domain Matching and Intra-domain Discrimination for Cross-domain Speech Recognition

End-to-end automatic speech recognition (ASR) usually suffers from performance degradation when applied to a new domain due to domain shift. Unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) aims to improve the performance on the unlabeled target domain by transferring knowledge from the source to the target domain. To improve transferability, existing UDA approaches mainly focus on matching the distributions of the source and target domains globally and/or locally, while ignoring the model discriminability. In this paper, we propose a novel UDA approach for ASR via inter-domain MAtching and intra-domain DIscrimination (MADI), which improves the model transferability by fine-grained inter-domain matching and discriminability by intra-domain contrastive discrimination simultaneously. Evaluations on the Libri-Adapt dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. MADI reduces the relative word error rate (WER) on cross-device and cross-environment ASR by 17.7% and 22.8%, respectively.

From Kinetic Flocking Model of Cucker-Smale Type to Self-Organized Hydrodynamic model

We investigate the hydrodynamic limit problem for a kinetic flocking model. We develop a GCI-based Hilbert expansion method, and establish rigorously the asymptotic regime from the kinetic Cucker-Smale model with a confining potential in a mesoscopic scale to the macroscopic limit system for self-propelled individuals, which is derived formally by Aceves-Sánchez, Bostan, Carrillo and Degond (2019). In the traditional kinetic equation with collisions, for example, Boltzmann type equations, the key properties that connect the kinetic and fluid regimes are: the linearized collision operator (linearized collision operator around the equilibrium), denoted by $\mathcal{L}$, is symmetric, and has a nontrivial null space (its elements are called collision invariants) which include all the fluid information, i.e. the dimension of Ker($\mathcal{L}$) is equal to the number of fluid variables. Furthermore, the moments of the collision invariants with the kinetic equations give the macroscopic equations. The new feature and difficulty of the corresponding problem considered in this paper is: the linearized operator $\mathcal{L}$ is not symmetric, i.e. $\mathcal{L}\neq \mathcal{L}^*$, where $\mathcal{L}^*$ is the dual of $\mathcal{L}$. Moreover, the collision invariants lies in Ker($\mathcal{L}^*$), which is called generalized collision invariants (GCI). This is fundamentally different with classical Boltzmann type equations. This is a common feature of many collective motions of self-propelled particles with alignment in living systems, or many active particle system. Another difficulty (also common for active system) is involved by the normalization of the direction vector, which is highly nonlinear.

The radio detection and accretion properties of the peculiar nuclear transient AT 2019avd

AT 2019avd is a nuclear transient detected from infrared to soft X-rays, though its nature is yet unclear. The source has shown two consecutive flaring episodes in the optical and the infrared bands and its second flare was covered by X-ray monitoring programs. During this flare, the UVOT/Swift photometries revealed two plateaus: one observed after the peak and the other one appeared ~240 days later. Meanwhile, our NICER and XRT/Swift campaigns show two declines in the X-ray emission, one during the first optical plateau and one 70-90 days after the optical/UV decline. The evidence suggests that the optical/UV could not have been primarily originated from X-ray reprocessing. Furthermore, we detected a timelag of ~16-34 days between the optical and UV emission, which indicates the optical likely comes from UV reprocessing by a gas at a distance of 0.01-0.03 pc. We also report the first VLA and VLBA detection of this source at different frequencies and different stages of the second flare. The information obtained in the radio band - namely a steep and a late-time inverted radio spectrum, a high brightness temperature and a radio-loud state at late times - together with the multiwavelength properties of AT 2019avd suggests the launching and evolution of outflows such as disc winds or jets. In conclusion, we propose that after the ignition of black hole activity in the first flare, a super-Eddington flaring accretion disc formed and settled to a sub-Eddington state by the end of the second flare, associated with a compact radio outflow.

Robust MelGAN: A robust universal neural vocoder for high-fidelity TTS

In current two-stage neural text-to-speech (TTS) paradigm, it is ideal to have a universal neural vocoder, once trained, which is robust to imperfect mel-spectrogram predicted from the acoustic model. To this end, we propose Robust MelGAN vocoder by solving the original multi-band MelGAN's metallic sound problem and increasing its generalization ability. Specifically, we introduce a fine-grained network dropout strategy to the generator. With a specifically designed over-smooth handler which separates speech signal intro periodic and aperiodic components, we only perform network dropout to the aperodic components, which alleviates metallic sounding and maintains good speaker similarity. To further improve generalization ability, we introduce several data augmentation methods to augment fake data in the discriminator, including harmonic shift, harmonic noise and phase noise. Experiments show that Robust MelGAN can be used as a universal vocoder, significantly improving sound quality in TTS systems built on various types of data.

MoSE: Modality Split and Ensemble for Multimodal Knowledge Graph Completion

Multimodal knowledge graph completion (MKGC) aims to predict missing entities in MKGs. Previous works usually share relation representation across modalities. This results in mutual interference between modalities during training, since for a pair of entities, the relation from one modality probably contradicts that from another modality. Furthermore, making a unified prediction based on the shared relation representation treats the input in different modalities equally, while their importance to the MKGC task should be different. In this paper, we propose MoSE, a Modality Split representation learning and Ensemble inference framework for MKGC. Specifically, in the training phase, we learn modality-split relation embeddings for each modality instead of a single modality-shared one, which alleviates the modality interference. Based on these embeddings, in the inference phase, we first make modality-split predictions and then exploit various ensemble methods to combine the predictions with different weights, which models the modality importance dynamically. Experimental results on three KG datasets show that MoSE outperforms state-of-the-art MKGC methods. Codes are available at https://github.com/OreOZhao/MoSE4MKGC.

The Luminosity Function of Tidal Disruption Flares for the ZTF-I Survey

The high-cadence survey of Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) has completely dominated the discovery of tidal disruption events (TDEs) in the past few years and resulted in the largest sample of TDEs with optical/UV light curves well-sampled around their peaks, providing us an excellent opportunity to construct a peak luminosity function (LF) of tidal disruption flares (TDFs). The new construction is necessary particularly considering that the most updated LF reported in literature has been inferred from only 13 sources from 5 different surveys. Here we present the optical and blackbody LFs calculated by 33 TDFs discovered in the ZTF-I survey. The optical LF can be described by both a power-law profile $dN/dL_g\propto L_g^{-2.3\pm0.2}$, and a Schechter-like function. The blackbody LF can be described by a power-law profile $dN/dL_{\rm bb}\propto L_{\rm bb}^{-2.2\pm0.2}$, shallower than the LF made of previous van Velzen (2018) sample. A possible low-luminosity turnover in the optical LF supports an Eddington-limited emission scenario. The drop of volumetric rate at high luminosity suggests a rate suppression due to direct captures of the black hole. The total volumetric rate is one order of magnitude lower than the previous estimation, which is probably not simply caused by the high fraction post-peak sources (7/13) in the previous sample. Instead, the normalization step during the previous LF construction to reconcile various surveys might adversely amplify the influence of serendipitous discoveries. Therefore, TDFs selected from ongoing and upcoming uniform surveys like ZTF, Vera Rubin Observatory (VRO) and Wide-Field Survey Telescope (WFST) should yield more accurate LFs.

A possible 250-second X-ray quasi-periodicity in the fast blue optical transient AT2018cow

The fast blue optical transients (FBOTs) are a new population of extragalactic transients of unclear physical origin. A variety of mechanisms have been proposed including failed supernova explosion, shock interaction with a dense medium, young magnetar, accretion onto a compact object, and stellar tidal disruption event, but none is conclusive. Here we report the discovery of a possible X-ray quasi-periodicity signal with a period of $\sim$250 second (at a significance level of 99.76%) in the brightest FBOT AT2018cow through the analysis of XMM-Newton/PN data. The signal is independently detected at the same frequency in the average power density spectrum from data taken from the Swift telescope, with observations covering from 6 to 37 days after the optical discovery, though the significance level is lower (94.26%). This suggests that the QPO frequency may be stable over at least 1.1$\times$ 10$^{4}$ cycles. Assuming the $\sim$250 second QPO to be a scaled-down analogue of that typically seen in stellar mass black holes, a black hole mass of $\sim10^{3}-10^{5}$ solar masses could be inferred. The overall X-ray luminosity evolution could be modeled with the stellar tidal disruption by a black hole of $\sim10^4$ solar masses, providing a viable mechanism to produce AT2018cow. Our findings suggest that other bright FBOTs may also harbor intermediate-mass black holes.

On the Origin of the Strong Optical Variability of Emission-line Galaxies

Emission-line galaxies (ELGs) are crucial in understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies, while little is known about their variability. Here we report the study on the optical variability of a sample of ELGs selected in the COSMOS field, which has narrow-band observations in two epochs separated by $\gtrsim$ 12 years. This sample was observed with Suprime-Cam (SC) and Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) on the $Subaru$ telescope in NB816 and $i'/i$ bands, respectively. After carefully removing the wing effect of a narrow-band filter, we check the optical variability in a sample of 181 spectroscopically confirmed ELGs. We find that 0 (0/68) Ha emitters, 11.9% (5/42) [OIII] emitters, and 0 (0/71) [OII] emitters show significant variability ($|Δm_{NB}| \geq 3\,σ_{Δm_{NB,AGN}} = 0.20\, mag$) in the two-epoch narrow-band observations. We investigate the presence of active galactic nucleus (AGN) in this variable ELG (var-ELG) sample with three methods, including X-ray luminosity, mid-infrared activity, and radio-excess. We find zero bright AGN in this var-ELG sample, but cannot rule out the contribution from faint AGN. We find that SNe could also dominate the variability of the var-ELG sample. The merger morphology shown in the HST/F814W images of all the var-ELG sample is in agreement with the enhancement of star formation, i.e., the SNe activity.

Overcoming Language Priors in Visual Question Answering via Distinguishing Superficially Similar Instances

Despite the great progress of Visual Question Answering (VQA), current VQA models heavily rely on the superficial correlation between the question type and its corresponding frequent answers (i.e., language priors) to make predictions, without really understanding the input. In this work, we define the training instances with the same question type but different answers as \textit{superficially similar instances}, and attribute the language priors to the confusion of VQA model on such instances. To solve this problem, we propose a novel training framework that explicitly encourages the VQA model to distinguish between the superficially similar instances. Specifically, for each training instance, we first construct a set that contains its superficially similar counterparts. Then we exploit the proposed distinguishing module to increase the distance between the instance and its counterparts in the answer space. In this way, the VQA model is forced to further focus on the other parts of the input beyond the question type, which helps to overcome the language priors. Experimental results show that our method achieves the state-of-the-art performance on VQA-CP v2. Codes are available at \href{https://github.com/wyk-nku/Distinguishing-VQA.git}{Distinguishing-VQA}.

TPSNet: Reverse Thinking of Thin Plate Splines for Arbitrary Shape Scene Text Representation

The research focus of scene text detection and recognition has shifted to arbitrary shape text in recent years, where the text shape representation is a fundamental problem. An ideal representation should be compact, complete, efficient, and reusable for subsequent recognition in our opinion. However, previous representations have flaws in one or more aspects. Thin-Plate-Spline (TPS) transformation has achieved great success in scene text recognition. Inspired by this, we reversely think of its usage and sophisticatedly take TPS as an exquisite representation for arbitrary shape text representation. The TPS representation is compact, complete, and efficient. With the predicted TPS parameters, the detected text region can be directly rectified to a near-horizontal one to assist the subsequent recognition. To further exploit the potential of the TPS representation, the Border Alignment Loss is proposed. Based on these designs, we implement the text detector TPSNet, which can be extended to a text spotter conveniently. Extensive evaluation and ablation of several public benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method for text representation and spotting. Particularly, TPSNet achieves the detection F-Measure improvement of 4.4\% (78.4\% vs. 74.0\%) on Art dataset and the end-to-end spotting F-Measure improvement of 5.0\% (78.5\% vs. 73.5\%) on Total-Text, which are large margins with no bells and whistles.

ELUCID VII: Using Constrained Hydro Simulations to Explore the Gas Component of the Cosmic Web

Using reconstructed initial conditions in the SDSS survey volume, we carry out constrained hydrodynamic simulations in three regions representing different types of the cosmic web: the Coma cluster of galaxies; the SDSS great wall; and a large low-density region at $z\sim 0.05$. These simulations, which include star formation and stellar feedback but no AGN formation and feedback, are used to investigate the properties and evolution of intergalactic and intra-cluster media. About half of the warm-hot intergalactic gas is associated with filaments in the local cosmic web. Gas in the outskirts of massive filaments and halos can be heated significantly by accretion shocks generated by mergers of filaments and halos, respectively, and there is a tight correlation between gas temperature and the strength of the local tidal field. The simulations also predict some discontinuities associated with shock fronts and contact edges, which can be tested using observations of the thermal SZ effect and X-rays. A large fraction of the sky is covered by Ly$α$ and OVI absorption systems, and most of the OVI systems and low-column density HI systems are associated with filaments in the cosmic web. The constrained simulations, which follow the formation and heating history of the observed cosmic web, provide an important avenue to interpret observational data. With full information about the origin and location of the cosmic gas to be observed, such simulations can also be used to develop observational strategies.

X-ray view of a merging supermassive black hole binary candidate SDSSJ1430+2303: Results from the first ~200 days of observations

Recently we discovered an unprecedented supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) candidate in the nearby Seyfert galaxy SDSS J1430+2303, which is predicted to merge within three years. X-ray spectroscopy may bring unique kinematic evidence for the last inspiraling stage, when the binary is too close to allow each of them to hold an individual broad line region. We try to confirm the unique SMBHB merger event and understand the associated high-energy processes from a comprehensive X-ray view. We observed SDSS J1430+2303 with XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, Chandra, and Swift spanning the first ~200 days since its discovery. X-ray variability, up to a factor of 7, has been detected on a timescale of a few days. The broadband spectrum from 0.2-70 keV can be well fitted with a model consisting of a power law and a relativistic reflection covered by a warm absorber. The properties of the warm absorber changed dramatically, for example, with a decrease in the line-of-sight velocity from ~0.2c to ~0.02c, between the two XMM-Newton observations separated by only 19 days, which can be naturally understood in the context of the SMBHB; although, the clumpy wind scenario cannot be completely excluded. Broad Fe Kalpha emission has been robustly detected, though its velocity shift or profile change is not yet measurable. Further longer X-ray observations are highly encouraged to detect the expected orbital motion of the binary.

Transient radio emission from low-redshift galaxies at z<0.3 revealed by VLASS and FIRST surveys

We present the discovery of a sample of 18 low-redshift (z<0.3) galaxies with transient nuclear radio emission. These galaxies are not or weakly detected in the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty cm survey performed on 1993-2009, but have brightened significantly in the radio flux (by a factor of >5) in the epoch I (2017-2019) observations of Very Large Array Sky Survey (VLASS). All the 18 galaxies have been detected in the epoch II VLASS observations in 2020-2021, for which the radio flux is found to evolve slowly (by a factor of ~40%) over a period of about three years. 15 galaxies have been observed in the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey, and a flat or inverted spectral slope between 888 MHz and 3 GHz is found. Based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectra taken before the radio brightening, 14 out of 18 can be classified to be LINERs or normal galaxies with weak or no nuclear activity. Most galaxies are red and massive, with more than half having central black hole masses above 10^8Msun. We find that only one galaxy in our sample displays optical flare lasting for at least two months, and a long decay in the infrared light curve that can be explained as the dust-heated echo emission of central optical flare, such as a stellar tidal disruption event. We discuss several possibilities for the transient radio emission and conclude that it is likely associated with a new-born radio jet triggered by short sporadic fueling of supermassive black hole. Such a scenario can be tested with further multi-frequency radio observations of these sources through measuring their radio flux variability and spectral evolution.

Compact and variable radio emission from an active galaxy with supersoft X-ray emission

RX J1301.9+2747 is a unique active galaxy with supersoft X-ray spectrum that lacks significant emission at energies above 2 keV. In addition, it is one of few galaxies displaying quasi-periodic X-ray eruptions that recur on a timescale of 13-20 ks. We present multi-epoch radio observations of RX J1301.9+2747 using GMRT, VLA and VLBA. The VLBA imaging at 1.6 GHz reveals a compact radio emission unresolved at a scale of <0.7 pc, with a brightness temperature of T_b>5x10^7 K. The radio emission is variable by more than a factor of 2.5 over a few days, based on the data taken from VLA monitoring campaigns. The short-term radio variability suggests that the radio emitting region has a size as small as 8x10^{-4} pc, resulting in an even higher brightness temperature of T_b ~10^{12} K. A similar limit on the source size can be obtained if the observed flux variability is not intrinsic and caused by the interstellar scintillation effect. The overall radio spectrum is steep with a time-averaged spectral index alpha=-0.78+/-0.03 between 0.89 GHz and 14 GHz. These observational properties rule out a thermal or star-formation origin of the radio emission, and appear to be consistent with the scenario of episodic jet ejections driven by magnetohydrodynamic process. Simultaneous radio and X-ray monitoring observations down to a cadence of hours are required to test whether the compact and variable radio emission is correlated with the quasi-periodic X-ray eruptions.

Improving Transformer-based Conversational ASR by Inter-Sentential Attention Mechanism

Transformer-based models have demonstrated their effectiveness in automatic speech recognition (ASR) tasks and even shown superior performance over the conventional hybrid framework. The main idea of Transformers is to capture the long-range global context within an utterance by self-attention layers. However, for scenarios like conversational speech, such utterance-level modeling will neglect contextual dependencies that span across utterances. In this paper, we propose to explicitly model the inter-sentential information in a Transformer based end-to-end architecture for conversational speech recognition. Specifically, for the encoder network, we capture the contexts of previous speech and incorporate such historic information into current input by a context-aware residual attention mechanism. For the decoder, the prediction of current utterance is also conditioned on the historic linguistic information through a conditional decoder framework. We show the effectiveness of our proposed method on several open-source dialogue corpora and the proposed method consistently improved the performance from the utterance-level Transformer-based ASR models.

GB6 J2113+1121: A multi-wavelength flaring gamma-ray blazar temporally and spatially coincident with the neutrino event IceCube-191001A

A radio-emitting tidal disruption event (AT2019dsg) is proposed as a likely counterpart of the IceCube neutrino event IC-191001A. In this work we have revisited the {\it Fermi}-LAT data in the direction of the neutrino and confirmed no signal at the site of AT2019dsg. Instead, at the edge of the 90\% confidential level error region of this neutrino there is a $γ$-ray transient source associated with a blazar GB6 J2113+1121. In May 2019, GB6 J2113+1121 was undergoing an unprecedented $γ$-ray flare since the start of the {\it Fermi}-LAT operation, with a variability amplitude about 20-fold. Similar violent flares of GB6 J2113+1121, unobserved before, have been also detected observed in optical bands. Moreover, the blazar remained in a high flux state in the infrared bands when IceCube-191001A arrived, though its $γ$-ray and optical activities has temporally ceased. Motivated by the spatial and temporal coincidence, we suggest that GB6 J2113+1121 is a candidate of the counterpart of IC-191001A. The jet properties of GB6 J2113+1121 are investigated, which are found to be comparable with that of the neutrino-emitting blazars (candidates). A specific analysis of archival IceCube data in this direction and future observations would put a further constraint on the origin of the neutrino.
