Language Model Guided Interpretable Video Action Reasoning

While neural networks have excelled in video action recognition tasks, their black-box nature often obscures the understanding of their decision-making processes. Recent approaches used inherently interpretable models to analyze video actions in a manner akin to human reasoning. These models, however, usually fall short in performance compared to their black-box counterparts. In this work, we present a new framework named Language-guided Interpretable Action Recognition framework (LaIAR). LaIAR leverages knowledge from language models to enhance both the recognition capabilities and the interpretability of video models. In essence, we redefine the problem of understanding video model decisions as a task of aligning video and language models. Using the logical reasoning captured by the language model, we steer the training of the video model. This integrated approach not only improves the video model's adaptability to different domains but also boosts its overall performance. Extensive experiments on two complex video action datasets, Charades & CAD-120, validates the improved performance and interpretability of our LaIAR framework. The code of LaIAR is available at https://github.com/NingWang2049/LaIAR.

Non-Abelian braiding of Fibonacci anyons with a superconducting processor

Non-Abelian topological orders offer an intriguing path towards fault-tolerant quantum computation, where information can be encoded and manipulated in a topologically protected manner immune to arbitrary local noises and perturbations. However, realizing non-Abelian topologically ordered states is notoriously challenging in both condensed matter and programmable quantum systems, and it was not until recently that signatures of non-Abelian statistics were observed through digital quantum simulation approaches. Despite these exciting progresses, none of them has demonstrated the appropriate type of topological orders and associated non-Abelian anyons whose braidings alone support universal quantum computation. Here, we report the realization of non-Abelian topologically ordered states of the Fibonacci string-net model and demonstrate braidings of Fibonacci anyons featuring universal computational power, with a superconducting quantum processor. We exploit efficient quantum circuits to prepare the desired states and verify their nontrivial topological nature by measuring the topological entanglement entropy. In addition, we create two pairs of Fibonacci anyons and demonstrate their fusion rule and non-Abelian braiding statistics by applying unitary gates on the underlying physical qubits. Our results establish a versatile digital approach to exploring exotic non-Abelian topological states and their associated braiding statistics with current noisy intermediate-scale quantum processors.

Measuring Spectral Form Factor in Many-Body Chaotic and Localized Phases of Quantum Processors

The spectral form factor (SFF) captures universal spectral fluctuations as signatures of quantum chaos, and has been instrumental in advancing multiple frontiers of physics including the studies of black holes and quantum many-body systems. However, the measurement of SFF in many-body systems is challenging due to the difficulty in resolving level spacings that become exponentially small with increasing system size. Here we experimentally measure the SFF to probe the presence or absence of chaos in quantum many-body systems using a superconducting quantum processor with a randomized measurement protocol. For a Floquet chaotic system, we observe signatures of spectral rigidity of random matrix theory in SFF given by the ramp-plateau behavior. For a Hamiltonian system, we utilize SFF to distinguish the quantum many-body chaotic phase and the prethermal many-body localization. We observe the dip-ramp-plateau behavior of random matrix theory in the chaotic phase, and contrast the scaling of the plateau time in system size between the many-body chaotic and localized phases. Furthermore, we probe the eigenstate statistics by measuring a generalization of the SFF, known as the partial SFF, and observe distinct behaviors in the purities of the reduced density matrix in the two phases. This work unveils a new way of extracting the universal signatures of many-body quantum chaos in quantum devices by probing the correlations in eigenenergies and eigenstates.

Distinguishing fission-like events from deep-inelastic collisions

We propose two functions to distinguish fission-like events from quasi-elastic (QE) scattering and deep inelastic collisions (DIC), for a better analysis of the measured mass-total kinetic energy distributions of binary fragments formed in fusion-fission reactions. We note that the ratio of capture to DIC events evidently decreases with the decreasing of the depth of the capture pocket predicted from the Skyrme energy density functional, with which the capture pocket could be extracted from the measured mass-energy distributions. Together with the improved quantum molecular dynamics simulations, in which the typical contact time of the reaction partners is smaller than 200 fm/c for QE and is larger than 600 fm/c for fission-like events, we find that the ratio of capture to touching cross section systematically increases with the pocket depth.

Accelerating Heterogeneous Tensor Parallelism via Flexible Workload Control

Transformer-based models are becoming deeper and larger recently. For better scalability, an underlying training solution in industry is to split billions of parameters (tensors) into many tasks and then run them across homogeneous accelerators (e.g., GPUs). However, such dedicated compute cluster is prohibitively expensive in academia and moderate companies. An economic replacement is to aggregate existing heterogeneous devices and share resources among multi-tenants. Nevertheless, static hardware configurations and dynamic resource contention definitely cause straggling tasks, which heavily slows down the overall training efficiency. Existing works feature contributions mainly tailored for traditional data parallelism. They cannot work well for the new tensor parallelism due to strict communication and correctness constraints. In this paper we first present ZERO-resizing, a novel dynamic workload balancing technique without any data migration. We tune workloads in real-time by temporarily resizing matrices involved in core tensor-related computations. We particularly design data imputation and priority selection policies to respectively satisfy consistency constraint required by normal training and reduce the accuracy loss. We also give a lightweight data migration technique without loss of accuracy, to cope with heavy heterogeneity. Our final SEMI-migration solution is built on top of these two techniques and can adaptively distinguish their respective balancing missions, to achieve an overall success in efficiency and accuracy. Extensive experiments on the representative Colossal-AI platform validate the effectiveness of our proposals.

LR-CNN: Lightweight Row-centric Convolutional Neural Network Training for Memory Reduction

In the last decade, Convolutional Neural Network with a multi-layer architecture has advanced rapidly. However, training its complex network is very space-consuming, since a lot of intermediate data are preserved across layers, especially when processing high-dimension inputs with a big batch size. That poses great challenges to the limited memory capacity of current accelerators (e.g., GPUs). Existing efforts mitigate such bottleneck by external auxiliary solutions with additional hardware costs, and internal modifications with potential accuracy penalty. Differently, our analysis reveals that computations intra- and inter-layers exhibit the spatial-temporal weak dependency and even complete independency features. That inspires us to break the traditional layer-by-layer (column) dataflow rule. Now operations are novelly re-organized into rows throughout all convolution layers. This lightweight design allows a majority of intermediate data to be removed without any loss of accuracy. We particularly study the weak dependency between two consecutive rows. For the resulting skewed memory consumption, we give two solutions with different favorite scenarios. Evaluations on two representative networks confirm the effectiveness. We also validate that our middle dataflow optimization can be smoothly embraced by existing works for better memory reduction.

On the Effectiveness of Function-Level Vulnerability Detectors for Inter-Procedural Vulnerabilities

Software vulnerabilities are a major cyber threat and it is important to detect them. One important approach to detecting vulnerabilities is to use deep learning while treating a program function as a whole, known as function-level vulnerability detectors. However, the limitation of this approach is not understood. In this paper, we investigate its limitation in detecting one class of vulnerabilities known as inter-procedural vulnerabilities, where the to-be-patched statements and the vulnerability-triggering statements belong to different functions. For this purpose, we create the first Inter-Procedural Vulnerability Dataset (InterPVD) based on C/C++ open-source software, and we propose a tool dubbed VulTrigger for identifying vulnerability-triggering statements across functions. Experimental results show that VulTrigger can effectively identify vulnerability-triggering statements and inter-procedural vulnerabilities. Our findings include: (i) inter-procedural vulnerabilities are prevalent with an average of 2.8 inter-procedural layers; and (ii) function-level vulnerability detectors are much less effective in detecting to-be-patched functions of inter-procedural vulnerabilities than detecting their counterparts of intra-procedural vulnerabilities.

Compact quantum random number generator based on a laser diode and silicon photonics integrated hybrid chip

In this study, a compact and low-power-consumption quantum random number generator (QRNG) based on a laser diode and silicon photonics integrated hybrid chip is proposed and verified experimentally. The hybrid chip's size is 8.8*2.6*1 mm3, and the power of entropy source is 80 mW. A common mode rejection ratio greater than 40 dB was achieved using an optimized 1*2 multimode interferometer structure. A method for optimizing the quantum-to-classical noise ratio is presented. A quantum-to-classical noise ratio of approximately 9 dB was achieved when the photoelectron current is 1 microampere using a balance homodyne detector with a high dark current GeSi photodiode. The proposed QRNG has the potential for use in scenarios of moderate MHz random number generation speed, with low power, small volume, and low cost prioritized.

Upside down Rayleigh-Marchenko: a practical, yet exact redatuming scheme for seabed seismic acquisitions

Ocean-bottom seismic plays a crucial role in resource exploration and monitoring. However, despite its undoubted potential, the use of coarse receiver geometries poses challenges to accurate wavefield redatuming. This in turn, affects the quality of subsequent imaging and reservoir charactherization products. We propose a reciprocal version of the Rayleigh-Marchenko method, called upside down Rayleigh-Marchenko, where all spatial integrals are performed over the (usually much better-sampled) source carpet; this results in a theoretically exact redatuming scheme, which can handle irregular and sparse receiver geometries. The proposed method requires availability of multi-component receivers and either dual-sensor sources or a pre-processing step of model-based source deghosting, and utilizes only the down-going component of the receiver-side wavefield; as such, it can be interpreted as a full-wavefield extension of the mirror imaging method commonly used in seabed settings. Two synthetic examples are used to showcase the effectiveness of the proposed method, starting from the ideal scenario of finely and regularly sampled sources and receivers, and later considering different levels of decimation for the receiver array. Migrated images as well as common-angle gathers reveal that our method can be used to produce structural and amplitude-friendly imaging outputs with minimal data pre-processing.

Image classification network enhancement methods based on knowledge injection

The current deep neural network algorithm still stays in the end-to-end training supervision method like Image-Label pairs, which makes traditional algorithm is difficult to explain the reason for the results, and the prediction logic is difficult to understand and analyze. The current algorithm does not use the existing human knowledge information, which makes the model not in line with the human cognition model and makes the model not suitable for human use. In order to solve the above problems, the present invention provides a deep neural network training method based on the human knowledge, which uses the human cognition model to construct the deep neural network training model, and uses the existing human knowledge information to construct the deep neural network training model. This paper proposes a multi-level hierarchical deep learning algorithm, which is composed of multi-level hierarchical deep neural network architecture and multi-level hierarchical deep learning framework. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively explain the hidden information of the neural network. The goal of our study is to improve the interpretability of deep neural networks (DNNs) by providing an analysis of the impact of knowledge injection on the classification task. We constructed a knowledge injection dataset with matching knowledge data and image classification data. The knowledge injection dataset is the benchmark dataset for the experiments in the paper. Our model expresses the improvement in interpretability and classification task performance of hidden layers at different scales.

Long-lived topological time-crystalline order on a quantum processor

Topologically ordered phases of matter elude Landau's symmetry-breaking theory, featuring a variety of intriguing properties such as long-range entanglement and intrinsic robustness against local perturbations. Their extension to periodically driven systems gives rise to exotic new phenomena that are forbidden in thermal equilibrium. Here, we report the observation of signatures of such a phenomenon -- a prethermal topologically ordered time crystal -- with programmable superconducting qubits arranged on a square lattice. By periodically driving the superconducting qubits with a surface-code Hamiltonian, we observe discrete time-translation symmetry breaking dynamics that is only manifested in the subharmonic temporal response of nonlocal logical operators. We further connect the observed dynamics to the underlying topological order by measuring a nonzero topological entanglement entropy and studying its subsequent dynamics. Our results demonstrate the potential to explore exotic topologically ordered nonequilibrium phases of matter with noisy intermediate-scale quantum processors.

A Video Coding Method Based on Neural Network for CLIC2024

This paper presents a video coding scheme that combines traditional optimization methods with deep learning methods based on the Enhanced Compression Model (ECM). In this paper, the traditional optimization methods adaptively adjust the quantization parameter (QP). The key frame QP offset is set according to the video content characteristics, and the coding tree unit (CTU) level QP of all frames is also adjusted according to the spatial-temporal perception information. Block importance mapping technology (BIM) is also introduced, which adjusts the QP according to the block importance. Meanwhile, the deep learning methods propose a convolutional neural network-based loop filter (CNNLF), which is turned on/off based on the rate-distortion optimization at the CTU and frame level. Besides, intra-prediction using neural networks (NN-intra) is proposed to further improve compression quality, where 8 neural networks are used for predicting blocks of different sizes. The experimental results show that compared with ECM-3.0, the proposed traditional methods and adding deep learning methods improve the PSNR by 0.54 dB and 1 dB at 0.05Mbps, respectively; 0.38 dB and 0.71dB at 0.5 Mbps, respectively, which proves the superiority of our method.

Cycle-Consistency Learning for Captioning and Grounding

We present that visual grounding and image captioning, which perform as two mutually inverse processes, can be bridged together for collaborative training by careful designs. By consolidating this idea, we introduce CyCo, a cyclic-consistent learning framework to ameliorate the independent training pipelines of visual grounding and image captioning. The proposed framework (1) allows the semi-weakly supervised training of visual grounding; (2) improves the performance of fully supervised visual grounding; (3) yields a general captioning model that can describe arbitrary image regions. Extensive experiments show that our fully supervised grounding model achieves state-of-the-art performance, and the semi-weakly supervised one also exhibits competitive performance compared to the fully supervised counterparts. Our image captioning model has the capability to freely describe image regions and meanwhile shows impressive performance on prevalent captioning benchmarks.

DocBinFormer: A Two-Level Transformer Network for Effective Document Image Binarization

In real life, various degradation scenarios exist that might damage document images, making it harder to recognize and analyze them, thus binarization is a fundamental and crucial step for achieving the most optimal performance in any document analysis task. We propose DocBinFormer (Document Binarization Transformer), a novel two-level vision transformer (TL-ViT) architecture based on vision transformers for effective document image binarization. The presented architecture employs a two-level transformer encoder to effectively capture both global and local feature representation from the input images. These complimentary bi-level features are exploited for efficient document image binarization, resulting in improved results for system-generated as well as handwritten document images in a comprehensive approach. With the absence of convolutional layers, the transformer encoder uses the pixel patches and sub-patches along with their positional information to operate directly on them, while the decoder generates a clean (binarized) output image from the latent representation of the patches. Instead of using a simple vision transformer block to extract information from the image patches, the proposed architecture uses two transformer blocks for greater coverage of the extracted feature space on a global and local scale. The encoded feature representation is used by the decoder block to generate the corresponding binarized output. Extensive experiments on a variety of DIBCO and H-DIBCO benchmarks show that the proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art techniques on four metrics. The source code will be made available at https://github.com/RisabBiswas/DocBinFormer.

Throughput Maximization for Intelligent Refracting Surface Assisted mmWave High-Speed Train Communications

With the increasing demands from passengers for data-intensive services, millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is considered as an effective technique to release the transmission pressure on high speed train (HST) networks. However, mmWave signals ncounter severe losses when passing through the carriage, which decreases the quality of services on board. In this paper, we investigate an intelligent refracting surface (IRS)-assisted HST communication system. Herein, an IRS is deployed on the train window to dynamically reconfigure the propagation environment, and a hybrid time division multiple access-nonorthogonal multiple access scheme is leveraged for interference mitigation. We aim to maximize the overall throughput while taking into account the constraints imposed by base station beamforming, IRS discrete phase shifts and transmit power. To obtain a practical solution, we employ an alternating optimization method and propose a two-stage algorithm. In the first stage, the successive convex approximation method and branch and bound algorithm are leveraged for IRS phase shift design. In the second stage, the Lagrangian multiplier method is utilized for power allocation. Simulation results demonstrate the benefits of IRS adoption and power allocation for throughput improvement in mmWave HST networks.

Surface skyrmions and dual topological Hall effect in antiferromagnetic topological insulator EuCd$_2$As$_2$

In this work, we synthesized single crystal of EuCd$_2$As$_2$, which exhibits A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) order with in-plane spin orientation below $T_N$ = 9.5~K.Optical spectroscopy and transport measurements suggest its topological insulator (TI) nature with an insulating gap around 0.1eV. Remarkably, a dual topological Hall resistivity that exhibits same magnitude but opposite signs in the positive to negative and negative to positive magnetic field hysteresis branches emerges below 20~K. With magnetic force microscopy (MFM) images and numerical simulations, we attribute the dual topological Hall effect to the Néel-type skyrmions stabilized by the interactions between topological surface states and magnetism, and the sign reversal in different hysteresis branches indicates potential coexistence of skyrmions and antiskyrmions. Our work uncovers a unique two-dimensional (2D) magnetism on the surface of intrinsic AFM TI, providing a promising platform for novel topological quantum states and AFM spintronic applications.

Deep Joint Source-Channel Coding for Image Transmission with Visual Protection

Joint source-channel coding (JSCC) has achieved great success due to the introduction of deep learning (DL). Compared to traditional separate source-channel coding (SSCC) schemes, the advantages of DL-based JSCC (DJSCC) include high spectrum efficiency, high reconstruction quality, and relief of "cliff effect". However, it is difficult to couple existing secure communication mechanisms (e.g., encryption-decryption mechanism) with DJSCC in contrast with traditional SSCC schemes, which hinders the practical usage of this emerging technology. To this end, our paper proposes a novel method called DL-based joint protection and source-channel coding (DJPSCC) for images that can successfully protect the visual content of the plain image without significantly sacrificing image reconstruction performance. The idea of the design is to use a neural network to conduct visual protection, which converts the plain image to a visually protected one with the consideration of its interaction with DJSCC. During the training stage, the proposed DJPSCC method learns: 1) deep neural networks for image protection and image deprotection, and 2) an effective DJSCC network for image transmission in the protected domain. Compared to existing source protection methods applied with DJSCC transmission, the DJPSCC method achieves much better reconstruction performance.

Sum Rate Maximization under AoI Constraints for RIS-Assisted mmWave Communications

The concept of age of information (AoI) has been proposed to quantify information freshness, which is crucial for time-sensitive applications. However, in millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems, the link blockage caused by obstacles and the severe path loss greatly impair the freshness of information received by the user equipments (UEs). In this paper, we focus on reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted mmWave communications, where beamforming is performed at transceivers to provide directional beam gain and a RIS is deployed to combat link blockage. We aim to maximize the system sum rate while satisfying the information freshness requirements of UEs by jointly optimizing the beamforming at transceivers, the discrete RIS reflection coefficients, and the UE scheduling strategy. To facilitate a practical solution, we decompose the problem into two subproblems. For the first per-UE data rate maximization problem, we further decompose it into a beamforming optimization subproblem and a RIS reflection coefficient optimization subproblem. Considering the difficulty of channel estimation, we utilize the hierarchical search method for the former and the local search method for the latter, and then adopt the block coordinate descent (BCD) method to alternately solve them. For the second scheduling strategy design problem, a low-complexity heuristic scheduling algorithm is designed. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively improve the system sum rate while satisfying the information freshness requirements of all UEs.
