Nucleus-nucleus potential from identical-particle interference

Based on the quantum interference between two-identical-nucleus scattering at energies around the Coulomb barrier, the barrier positions for $^{58}$Ni+$^{58}$Ni and $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O are extracted from Mott oscillations in the angular distributions around 90$^{\circ}$ for the first time. The angle separation of pairs of Mott scattering valleys around 90$^{\circ}$ has a direct relationship with the closest distance between two nuclei in elastic scattering. Together with the barrier height from fusion excitation function, the extracted barrier position provides a sensitive probe to constrain the model predictions for the nucleus-nucleus potential barrier.

Room Temperature Terahertz Spectrometer with Quantum-Level Sensitivity

Photon detection with quantum-level sensitivity is particularly challenging in the terahertz regime (0.1-10 THz), which contains ~98% of all the photons existing in the universe. Near-quantum-limited terahertz spectrometry has so far only been possible through the use of cryogenically cooled superconducting mixers as frequency downconverters. Here we introduce a spectrometry scheme that uses plasmonic photomixing for frequency downconversion to offer quantum-level sensitivities at room temperature for the first time. Frequency downconversion is achieved by mixing terahertz radiation and a heterodyning optical beam with a terahertz beat frequency in a plasmonics-enhanced semiconductor active region. We demonstrate spectrometer sensitivities down to 3 times the quantum-limit at room temperature. With a versatile design capable of broadband spectrometry, this plasmonic photomixer has broad applicability to quantum optics, chemical sensing, biological studies, medical diagnosis, high data-rate communication, as well as astronomy and atmospheric studies.

Intrinsic valley Hall transport in atomically thin MoS2

Electrons hopping in two-dimensional honeycomb lattices possess a valley degree of freedom in addition to charge and spin. In the absence of inversion symmetry, these systems were predicted to exhibit opposite Hall effects for electrons from different valleys. Such valley Hall effects have been achieved only by extrinsic means, such as substrate coupling, dual gating, and light illuminating. Here, we report the first observation of intrinsic valley Hall transport without any extrinsic symmetry breaking in the non-centrosymmetric monolayer and trilayer MoS2, evidenced by considerable nonlocal resistance that scales cubically with local resistance. Such a hallmark survives even at room temperature with a valley diffusion length at micron scale. By contrast, no valley Hall signal is observed in the centrosymmetric bilayer MoS2. Our work elucidates the topological quantum origin of valley Hall effects and marks a significant step towards the purely electrical control of valley degree of freedom in topological valleytronics.

Comparison of heavy-ion transport simulations: Collision integral in a box

Simulations by transport codes are indispensable to extract valuable physics information from heavy ion collisions. In order to understand the origins of discrepancies between different widely used transport codes, we compare 15 such codes under controlled conditions of a system confined to a box with periodic boundary, initialized with Fermi-Dirac distributions at saturation density and temperatures of either 0 or 5 MeV. In such calculations, one is able to check separately the different ingredients of a transport code. In this second publication of the code evaluation project, we only consider the two-body collision term, i.e. we perform cascade calculations. When the Pauli blocking is artificially suppressed, the collision rates are found to be consistent for most codes (to within $1\%$ or better) with analytical results, or completely controlled results of a basic cascade code after eliminating the correlations within the same pair of colliding particles. In calculations with active Pauli blocking, the blocking probability was found to deviate from the expected reference values. The reason is found in substantial phase-space fluctuations and smearing tied to numerical algorithms and model assumptions in the representation of phase space. This results in the reduction of the blocking probability in most transport codes, so that the simulated system gradually evolves away from the Fermi-Dirac towards a Boltzmann distribution. As a result of this investigation, we are able to make judgements about the most effective strategies in transport simulations for determining the collision probabilities and the Pauli blocking. Investigation in a similar vein of other ingredients in transport calculations, like the mean field propagation or the production of nucleon resonances and mesons, will be discussed in the future publications.

Probing Landau levels of strongly interacting massive Dirac electrons in layer-polarized MoS$_2$

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides are recently emerged 2D electronic systems with various novel properties, such as spin-valley locking, circular dichroism, valley Hall effects, Ising superconductivity. The reduced dimensionality and large effective masses further produce unconventional many-body interaction effects. Although recent hole transport measurements in WSe$_2$ indicate strong interactions in the valence bands, many-body interaction effects, particularly in the conduction bands, remain elusive to date. Here, for the first time, we perform transport measurements up to a magnetic field of $29$T to study the massive Dirac electron Landau levels (LL) in layer-polarized MoS$_2$ samples with mobilities of $22000$cm$^2$/(V$\cdot$s) at $1.5$K and densities of $\sim10^{12}$cm$^{-2}$. With decreasing the density, we observe LL crossing induced valley ferrimagnet-to-ferromagnet transitions, as a result of the interaction enhancement of the g-factor from $5.64$ to $21.82$. Near integer ratios of Zeeman-to-cyclotron energies, we discover LL anticrossings due to the formation of quantum Hall Ising ferromagnets, the valley polarizations of which appear to be reversible by tuning the density or an in-plane magnetic field. Our results provide compelling evidence for many-body interaction effects in the conduction bands of monolayer MoS$_2$ and establish a fertile ground for exploring strongly correlated phenomena of massive Dirac electrons.

Energy Harvesting Fairness in AN-aided Secure MU-MIMO SWIPT Systems with Cooperative Jammer

In this paper, we study a multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output secrecy simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) channel which consists of one transmitter, one cooperative jammer (CJ), multiple energy receivers (potential eavesdroppers, ERs), and multiple co-located receivers (CRs). We exploit the dual of artificial noise (AN) generation for facilitating efficient wireless energy transfer and secure transmission. Our aim is to maximize the minimum harvested energy among ERs and CRs subject to secrecy rate constraints for each CR and total transmit power constraint. By incorporating norm-bounded channel uncertainty model, we propose a iterative algorithm based on sequential parametric convex approximation to find a near-optimal solution. Finally, simulation results are presented to validate the performance of the proposed algorithm outperforms that of the conventional AN-aided scheme and CJ-aided scheme.

AN-aided Secure Transmission in Multi-user MIMO SWIPT Systems

In this paper, an energy harvesting scheme for a multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) secrecy channel with artificial noise (AN) transmission is investigated. Joint optimization of the transmit beamforming matrix, the AN covariance matrix, and the power splitting ratio is conducted to minimize the transmit power under the target secrecy rate, the total transmit power, and the harvested energy constraints. The original problem is shown to be non-convex, which is tackled by a two-layer decomposition approach. The inner layer problem is solved through semi-definite relaxation, and the outer problem is shown to be a single-variable optimization that can be solved by one-dimensional (1-D) line search. To reduce computational complexity, a sequential parametric convex approximation (SPCA) method is proposed to find a near-optimal solution. Furthermore, tightness of the relaxation for the 1-D search method is validated by showing that the optimal solution of the relaxed problem is rank-one. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed SPCA method achieves the same performance as the scheme based on 1-D search method but with much lower complexity.

Energy Efficiency Maximization for CoMP Joint Transmission with Non-Ideal Power Amplifiers

Coordinated multipoint (CoMP) joint transmission (JT) can save a great deal of energy especially for cell-edge users due to strengthened received signal, but at the cost of deploying and coordinating cooperative nodes, which degrades energy efficiency (EE), particularly when considerable amount of energy is consumed by nonideal hardware circuit. In this paper, we study energyefficient cooperation establishment, including cooperative nodes selection (CNS) and power allocation, to satisfy a required data rate in coherent JT-CoMP networks with non-ideal power amplifiers (PAs) and circuit power. The selection priority lemma is proved first, and then the formulated discrete combinatorial EE optimization is resolved by proposing node selection criterion and deriving closedform expressions of optimal transmission power. Therefore, an efficient algorithm is provided and its superiority is validated by Monte Carlo simulations, which also show the effects of non-ideal PA and the data rate demand on EE and optimal number of active nodes.

Energy-efficient resource allocation for hybrid bursty services in multi-relay OFDM networks

In this paper, we propose Mapped Two-way Water Filling (MTWF) scheme to maximize Energy Efficiency (EE) for hybrid bursty services with Quality of Services (QoS) requirements in Two-Way Multi-Relay (TWMR) OFDM networks. The bursty traffic is first analyzed by strictly proved equivalent homogeneous Poisson process, based on which the QoS requirements are converted into sum-rate constraints. The formulated non-convex EE maximization problem, including subcarrier assignment, Relay Selection (RS) and rate allocation, is NP-hard involving combinatorial optimization. To conduct optimal RS on each subcarrier without priori bursty traffic knowledge, we utilize some approximate relationships under high data rate demands to remove its dependence on two-way data rates, and simplify the whole optimization problem as well. After the optimal channel configuration is obtained, which only depends on channel conditions, subcarrier assignment is attained through Elitist Selection Genetic Algorithm (ESGA), and rate allocation of each service is fulfilled by deducing two-way water filling principle. A new equivalent optimization objective function is proposed next as the simple evaluating index in ESGA to reduce complexity. Finally, simulations are carried out to verify the superiority and convergence of our scheme, as well as the applicability for different scenarios.

Optimal Pilot Symbols Ratio in terms of Spectrum and Energy Efficiency in Uplink CoMP Networks

In wireless networks, Spectrum Efficiency (SE) and Energy Efficiency (EE) can be affected by the channel estimation that needs to be well designed in practice. In this paper, considering channel estimation error and non-ideal backhaul links, we optimize the pilot symbols ratio in terms of SE and EE in uplink Coordinated Multi-point (CoMP) networks. Modeling the channel estimation error, we formulate the SE and EE maximization problems by analyzing the system capacity with imperfect channel estimation. The maximal system capacity in SE optimization and the minimal transmit power in EE optimization, which both have the closed-form expressions, are derived by some reasonable approximations to reduce the complexity of solving complicated equations. Simulations are carried out to validate the superiority of our scheme, verify the accuracy of our approximation, and show the effect of pilot symbols ratio.

Energy-Efficient User Access Control and Resource Allocation in HCNs with Non-Ideal Circuitry

In this paper, we study the energy-efficient user access control (UAC) based on resource allocation (RA) in heterogeneous cellular networks (HCNs) with the required downlink data rate under non-ideal power amplifiers (PAs) and circuit power. It is proved that the energy consumption minimization is achieved when the typical user accesses only one base station (BS), while the other BSs remain in idle mode on the transmission resource allocated to this user. For this purpose, we reformulate the original non-convex optimization problem into a series of convex optimization problems where, in each case, the transmit power and duration of the accessed BS are determined. Then, the BS with the minimal energy consumption is selected for transmission. Considering the approximate situation, it is showed that the optimal transmit duration of the accessed BS can be estimated in closed form. The benefits of our proposed UAC and RA schemes are validated using numerical simulations, which also characterize the effect that non-ideal PAs have on the total energy consumption of different transmission schemes.

Determining the direction of a nanowire's flexural vibrations by micro-lens optical fiber interferometer

Nanowires are perfect transducers for ultra-sensitive detections of force and mass. For small mass sensing, recent advances in detecting more properties than their masses with high sensitivity for absorbed particles onto a nanowire rely on identifications of two orthogonal flexural vibration modes of the nanowire. The directions of these orthogonal flexural vibrations with respect to measurement direction are crucial parameters of vibration modes. However, previous method, which determines a nanowire's vibration direction using thermal vibrations, requires simultaneously detecting of two orthogonal flexural vibrations of the nanowire with sufficient sensitivity. In this work, we propose and realize a method for the determination of directions of a nanowire's flexural vibrations by micro-lens optical fiber interferometer. Our method combines the light interference and light scattering of the nanowire. It does not require detecting a pair of degenerated orthogonal flexural vibration modes. Therefore, our method is expected to have wide usages in characterizing nanowire's vibrations and their applications.

Probing strong interactions in p-type few-layer WSe$_2$ by density-dependent Landau level crossing

Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) such as MoS$_2$ and WSe$_2$ are emerging as a new platform for exploring many-body effects. Coulomb interactions are markedly enhanced in these materials because of the reduced screening and the large Wigner-Seitz radii. Although many-body excitonic effects in TMDCs have been extensively studied by optical means, not until recently did probing their strongly correlated electronic effects become possible in transport. Here, in p-type few-layer WSe$_2$ we observe highly density-dependent quantum Hall states of Γ valley holes below 12 T, whose predominant sequences alternate between odd- and even-integers. By tilting the magnetic field to induce Landau level crossings, we show that the strong Coulomb interaction enhances the Zeeman-to-cyclotron energy ratio from 2.67 to 3.55 as the density is reduced from 5.7 to 4.0$\times$10$^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$, giving rise to the even-odd alternation. Unprecedentedly, this indicates a 4.8 times enhancement of the g-factor over its band theory value at a density as high as 4.0$\times$10$^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$. Our findings unambiguously demonstrate that p-type few-layer WSe$_2$ is a superior platform for exploring strongly correlated electronic phenomena, opening a new perspective for realizing the elusive Wigner crystallization at a moderate density.

Statistical errors in Weizsaecker-Skyrme mass model

The statistical uncertainties of 13 model parameters in the Weizsäcker-Skyrme (WS*) mass model are investigated for the first time with an efficient approach, and the propagated errors in the predicted masses are estimated. The discrepancies between the predicted masses and the experimental data, including the new data in AME2016, are almost all smaller than the model errors. For neutron-rich heavy nuclei, the model errors increase considerably, and go up to a few MeV when the nucleus approaches the neutron drip line. The most sensitive model parameter which causes the largest statistical error is analyzed for all bound nuclei. We find that the two coefficients of symmetry energy term significantly influence the mass predictions of extremely neutron-rich nuclei, and the deformation energy coefficients play a key role for well-deformed nuclei around the $β$-stability line.

High Ultrasonic Transmission Loss Metasurfaces in Water

We report the experimental demonstration of a class of ultrasonic metasurfaces made of patterned silicon thin wafers partially covered by Si3N4 film that exhibit over 24 dB of sound transmission loss around 0.7 MHz, which is caused by the cancelation of sound waves emitted by the resonant Si3N4 membrane and the ones through the silicon backbone in each unit cell. These metasurfaces are expected to have high reflection with little total loss even at ultrasonic frequency. They could be good candidates as the building blocks for low-loss cavities, phase zone plates, and other underwater acoustic metamaterials. As the working principle is scalable, it provides guidance for the designs of audible underwater sound barriers as well.

Isolation and Characterization of Few-layer Manganese Thiophosphite

This work reports an experimental study on an antiferromagnetic honeycomb lattice of MnPS$_3$ that couples the valley degree of freedom to a macroscopic antiferromagnetic order. The crystal structure of MnPS$_3$ is identified by high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. Layer dependent angle resolved polarized Raman fingerprints of the MnPS$_3$ crystal are obtained and the Raman peak at 383 cm$^{-1}$ exhibits 100% polarity. Temperature dependences of anisotropic magnetic susceptibility of MnPS$_3$ crystal are measured in superconducting quantum interference device. Magnetic parameters like effective magnetic moment, and exchange interaction are extracted from the mean field approximation mode. Ambipolar electronic transport channels in MnPS$_3$ are realized by the liquid gating technique. The conducting channel of MnPS$_3$ offers a unique platform for exploring the spin/valleytronics and magnetic orders in 2D limitation.

Magnetic criticality-enhanced hybrid nanodiamond-thermometer under ambient conditions

Nitrogen vacancy (NV) centres in diamond are attractive as quantum sensors owing to their superb coherence under ambient conditions. However, the NV centre spin resonances are relatively insensitive to some important parameters such as temperature. Here we design and experimentally demonstrate a hybrid nano-thermometer composed of NV centres and a magnetic nanoparticle (MNP), in which the temperature sensitivity is enhanced by the critical magnetization of the MNP near the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition temperature. The temperature susceptibility of the NV center spin resonance reached 14 MHz/K, enhanced from the value without the MNP by two orders of magnitude. The sensitivity of a hybrid nano-thermometer composed of a Cu_{1-x}Ni_{x} MNP and a nanodiamond was measured to be 11 mK/Hz^{1/2} under ambient conditions. With such high-sensitivity, we monitored nanometer-scale temperature variation of 0.3 degree with a time resolution of 60 msec. This hybrid nano-thermometer provides a novel approach to studying a broad range of thermal processes at nanoscales such as nano-plasmonics, sub-cellular heat-stimulated processes, thermodynamics of nanostructures, and thermal remanent magnetization of nanoparticles.

Quantum Transport in Ambipolar Few-layer Black Phosphorus

Few-layer black phosphorus possesses unique electronic properties giving rise to distinct quantum phenomena and thus offers a fertile platform to explore the emergent correlation phenomena in low dimensions. A great progress has been demonstrated in improving the quality of hole-doped few-layer black phosphorus and its quantum transport studies, whereas the same achievements are rather modest for electron-doped few-layer black phosphorus. Here, we report the ambipolar quantum transport in few-layer black phosphorus exhibiting undoubtedly the quantum Hall effect for hole transport and showing clear signatures of the quantum Hall effect for electron transport. By bringing the spin-resolved Landau levels of the electron-doped black phosphorus to the coincidence, we measure the spin susceptibility $χ_s=m^\ast g^\ast=1.1\pm0.03$. This value is larger than for hole-doped black phosphorus and illustrates an energetically equidistant arrangement of spin-resolved Landau levels. Evidently, the n-type black phosphorus offers a unique platform with equidistant sequence of spin-up and spin-down states for exploring the quantum spintronic.
