Note on a less ad hoc derivation of the second quantization formalism

Second quantization is an essential topic in senior undergraduate and postgraduate level Quantum Mechanics course. However, it seems that there is a lack of transparent and natural derivation of this formalism from the first-quantization one in most existing textbooks. Without introducing the concept of a simple harmonic oscillator and taking the case of an assembly of identical fermions as an example, we provide a less ad hoc derivation of the second quantization formalism based on the equivalence of the fully antisymmetric many-fermion states and the Fock states.

Creating quantum spin chains through edge reconstruction in pure graphene armchair nanoribbons towards ballistic spin transport

It is well-known that ferromagnetism can be realized along the zigzag graphene nanoribbon edges, but the armchair graphene nanoribbon edges (AGNEs) are nonmagnetic. Here, we achieve Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin chains through edge reconstruction along the AGNEs. The reconstructed edge consists of pentagonal carbon rings or a hybrid of pentagonal and hexagonal carbon rings. The resultant nanoribbons are narrow-gap semiconductors and the band edge states are either spin-degenerate edge states or nonmagnetic bulk states. The spin is located on the outermost carbon of the pentagonal ring, and the inter-spin exchange is the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction. For finite chain lengthes or nonzero magnetization, there are nonzero spin Drude weights and thus ballistic quantum spin transport can be achieved along the reconstructed edges, These could be used for quantum spin information transfer and spintronic applications.

On-chip mechanical exceptional points based on an optomechanical zipper cavity

Exceptional points (EPs) represent a distinct type of spectral singularity in non-Hermitian systems, and intriguing physics concepts have been studied with optical EPs recently. As a system beyond photonics, the mechanical oscillators coupling with many physical systems are expected to be further exploited EPs for mechanical sensing, topology energy transfer, nonreciprocal dynamics etc. In this study, we demonstrated on-chip mechanical EPs with a silicon optomechanical zipper cavity, wherein two near-degenerate mechanical breathing modes are coupled via a single co-localized optical mode. By tailoring the dissipative and coherent couplings between two mechanical oscillators, the spectral splitting with 1/2 order response, a distinctive feature of EP, was observed successfully. Our work provides an integrated platform for investigating the physics related to mechanical EPs on silicon chips and suggests their possible applications for ultrasensitive measurements.

Exact solutions of few-magnon problems in the spin-$S$ periodic XXZ chain

We solve few-magnon problems for a finite-size spin-$S$ periodic Heisenberg XXZ chain with single-ion anisotropy through constructing sets of exact Bloch states achieving block diagonalization of the system. Concretely, the two-magnon (three-magnon) problem is converted to a single-particle one on a one-dimensional (two-dimensional) effective lattice whose size depends linearly (quadratically) on the total number of sites. For parameters lying within certain ranges, various types of multimagnon bound states are manifested and shown to correspond to edge states on the effective lattices. In the absence of the single-ion anisotropy, we reveal the condition under which exact zero-energy states emerge. As applications of the formalism, we calculate the transverse dynamic structure factor for a higher-spin chain near saturation magnetization and find signatures of the multimagnon bound states. We also calculate the real-time three-magnon dynamics from certain localized states, which are relevant to cold-atom quantum simulations, by simulating single-particle quantum walks on the effective lattices. This provides a physically transparent interpretation of the observed dynamics in terms of propagation of bound state excitations. Our method can be directly applied to more general spin or itinerant particle systems possessing translational symmetry.

Coexisting two-dimensional electron and hole gases highly confined at the interfaces of undoped KTaO3-sandwiching heterostructures

Two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in interfaces and surfaces based on perovskite SrTiO$_3$ (STO) has exhibited various interesting phenomena and is used to develop oxide electronics. Recently, KTaO$_3$ (KTO) shows great potential and is believed to host more exciting effects and phenomena toward novel devices. Here, through first-principles investigation and analysis, we find two types of coexisting 2DEG and 2D hole gas (2DHG) highly confined at the interfaces in undoped STO/KTO/BaTiO$_3$ heterostructures, when the KTO thickness $m$ reaches a crititcal value. The two interfaces are made by (SrO)$^0$/(TaO$_2$)$^+$ and (KO)$^-$/(TiO$_2$)$^0$ for the A-type, and by (TiO$_2$)$^0$/(KO)$^-$ and (TaO$_2$)$^+$/(BO)$^0$ for the B-type. The 2D electron carriers originate from Ta-$5 d_{xy}$ states at the interface including TaO$_2$ atomic layer, and the hole carriers from O-$2 p_x/p_y$ orbitals at the other interface. The electron and hole effective masses are 0.3$m_0$ and $1.06\sim 1.12 m_0$, respectively, where $m_0$ is mass of free electron, and the 2D carrier concentrations are in the order of $10 ^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$. Our analysis indicates that the interfacial 2DEG and 2DHG are simultaneously formed because of the band bending due to the polar discontinuity at the interfaces and the stress-induced polarization within the KTO layer. These could stimulate more exploration for new phenomena and novel devices.

Exact one- and two-site reduced dynamics in a finite-size quantum Ising ring after a quench: A semi-analytical approach

We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of a homogeneous quantum Ising ring after a quench, in which the transverse field $g$ suddenly changes from zero to a nonzero value. The long-timescale reduced dynamics of a single spin and of two nearest-neighbor spins, which involves the evaluation of expectation values of odd operators that break the fermion parity, is exactly obtained for finite-size but large rings through the use of a recently developed Pfaffian method [N. Wu, Phys. Rev. E 101, 042108 (2020)]. Time dependence of the transverse and longitudinal magnetizations, single-spin purity, expectation value of the string operator $X_j=\prod^{j-1}_{l=1}σ^z_lσ^x_j$, several equal-time two-site correlators, and pairwise concurrence after quenches to different phases are numerically studied. Our main findings are that (i) The expectation value of a generic odd operator approaches zero in the long-time limit; (ii) $\langle X_j\rangle_t$ exhibits $j$-independent exponential decay for a quench to $g=1$ and the time at which $\langle X_j\rangle_t$ reaches its first maximum scales linearly with $j$; (iii) The single-spin purity dynamics is mainly controlled by $\langleσ^x_j\rangle_t$ ($\langleσ^z_j\rangle_t$) for a quench to $g<1$ ($g\geq 1$). For quenches to the disordered phase with $g\gg1$, the single-spin tends to be in the maximally mixed state and the transverse and longitudinal correlators $\langleσ^z_jσ^z_{j+1}\rangle_t$ and $\langleσ^x_jσ^x_{j+1}\rangle_t$ respectively approaches $-0.25$ and $0.5$ in the thermodynamic limit; (iv) The nearest-neighbor entanglement acquires a finite plateau value that increases with increasing $g$, and approaches a saturated value $\sim0.125$ for $g\gg1$.

On the universality of AdS$_2$ diffusion bounds and the breakdown of linearized hydrodynamics

The chase of universal bounds on diffusivities in strongly coupled systems and holographic models has a long track record. The identification of a universal velocity scale, independent of the presence of well-defined quasiparticle excitations, is one of the major challenges of this program. A recent analysis, valid for emergent IR fixed points exhibiting local quantum criticality, and dual to IR AdS$_2$ geometries, suggests to identify such a velocity using the time and length scales at which hydrodynamics breaks down -- the equilibration velocity. The latter relates to the radius of convergence of the hydrodynamic expansion and it is extracted from a collision between a hydrodynamic diffusive mode and a non-hydrodynamic mode associated to the IR AdS$_2$ region. In this short note, we confirm this picture for holographic systems displaying the spontaneous breaking of translational invariance. Moreover, we find that, at zero temperature, the lower bound set by quantum chaos and the upper one defined by causality and hydrodynamics exactly coincide, determining uniquely the diffusion constant. Finally, we comment on the meaning and universality of this newly proposed prescription.

Exact dynamics of the homogeneous two-qubit $XXZ$ central spin model with the spin bath prepared in superpositions of symmetric Dicke states

We obtain exact dynamics of a two-qubit central spin model (CSM) consisting of two interacting qubits homogeneously coupled to a spin bath via the $XXZ$-type coupling, with the bath initially prepared in linear superpositions of the symmetric Dicke states. Using the interaction picture Hamiltonian with respect to the non-spin-flipping part of the model, we derive a sequence of equations of motion within each magnetization sector satisfied by the probability amplitudes of the time-evolved state. These equations of motion admit analytical solutions for the single-qubit CSM in which one of the two central qubits decouples from the rest of the system. Based on this, we provide a quantitative interpretation to the observed collapse-revival phenomena in the single-qubit Rabi oscillations when the bath is prepared in the spin coherent state. We then study the disentanglement and coherence dynamics of two initially entangled noninteracting qubits when the two qubits interact with individual baths or with a common bath. For individual baths the coherent dynamics is found to positively correlated to the single-qubit purity dynamics, and entanglement sudden disappearance and revivals are observed in both cases. The entanglement creation of two initially separable qubits coupled to a common bath is also studied and collapse and revival behaviors in the entanglement dynamics are observed. Choosing the equally weighted state and the $W$-class states as the bath initial states, we finally study the dynamics of entanglement between two individual bath spins and demonstrate the entanglement sharing mechanism in such a system.

Theory of exciton transport in molecular crystals strongly coupled to a cavity: A temperature-dependent variational approach

We present a semianalytical theory for exciton transport in organic molecular crystals interacting strongly with a single cavity mode. Based on the Holstein-Tavis-Cummings model and the Kubo formula, we derive an exciton mobility expression in the framework of a temperature-dependent variational canonical transformation, which can cover a wide range of exciton-vibration coupling, exciton-cavity coupling, and temperatures. A closed-form expression for the coherent part of the total mobility is obtained in the zeroth order of the exciton-vibration coupling, which demonstrates the significance of vibrationally dressed dark excitons in the determination of the transport mechanism. By performing numerical simulations on both the H- and J-aggregates, we find that the exciton-cavity coupling has significant effects on the total mobility: 1) At low temperatures, there exists an optimal exciton-cavity coupling strength for the H-aggregate at which a maximal mobility is reached, while the mobility in the J-aggregate decreases monotonically with increasing exciton-cavity coupling; 2) At high temperatures, the mobility in both types of aggregates get enhanced by the cavity. We illustrate the above-mentioned low-temperature optimal mobility observed in the H-aggregate by using realistic parameters at room temperature.

XGLUE: A New Benchmark Dataset for Cross-lingual Pre-training, Understanding and Generation

In this paper, we introduce XGLUE, a new benchmark dataset that can be used to train large-scale cross-lingual pre-trained models using multilingual and bilingual corpora and evaluate their performance across a diverse set of cross-lingual tasks. Comparing to GLUE(Wang et al., 2019), which is labeled in English for natural language understanding tasks only, XGLUE has two main advantages: (1) it provides 11 diversified tasks that cover both natural language understanding and generation scenarios; (2) for each task, it provides labeled data in multiple languages. We extend a recent cross-lingual pre-trained model Unicoder(Huang et al., 2019) to cover both understanding and generation tasks, which is evaluated on XGLUE as a strong baseline. We also evaluate the base versions (12-layer) of Multilingual BERT, XLM and XLM-R for comparison.

Separable and entangled states in the high-spin XX central spin model

It is shown in a recent preprint [arXiv:2001.10008] that the central spin model with XX-type qubit-bath coupling is integrable for a central spin $s_0=1/2$. Two types of eigenstates, separable states (dark states) and entangled states (bright states) between the central spin and the bath spins, are manifested. In this work, we show by using an operator product state approach that the XX central spin model with central spin $s_0>1/2$ and inhomogeneous coupling is partially solvable. That is, a subset of the eigenstates are obtained by the operator product state ansatz. These are the separable states and those entangled states in the single-spin-excitation subspace with respect to the fully polarized reference state. Due to the high degeneracy of the separable states, the resulting Bethe ansatz equations are found to be non-unique. In the case of $s_0=1/2$ we show that all the separable and entangled states can be written in terms of the operator product states, recovering the results in [arXiv:2001.10008]. Moreover, we also apply our method to the case of homogeneous coupling and derive the corresponding Bethe ansatz equations.

Longitudinal magnetization dynamics in the quantum Ising ring: A Pfaffian method based on correspondence between momentum space and real space

As perhaps the most studied paradigm for a quantum phase transition, the periodic quantum Ising chain is exactly solvable via the Jordan-Wigner transformation followed by a Fourier transform that diagonalizes the model in the momentum space of spinless fermions. Although the above procedures are well-known, there remain some subtle points to be clarified regarding the correspondence between the real-space and momentum-space representations of the quantum Ising ring, especially those related to fermion parities. In this work, we establish the relationship between the two fully aligned ferromagnetic states in real space and the two degenerate momentum-space ground states of the classical Ising ring, with the former being a special case of the factorized ground states of the more general XYZ model on the frustration-free hypersurface. Based on this observation, we then provide a Pfaffian formula for calculating real-time dynamics of the parity-breaking longitudinal magnetization with the system initially prepared in one of the two ferromagnetic states and under translationally invariant drivings. The formalism is shown to be applicable to systems with the help of online programs for the numerical computation of the Pfaffian, thus providing an efficient method to numerically study, for example, the emergence of discrete time crystals in related systems.

Giant Rashba spin splitting in strained KTaO3 ultrathin films for circular photogalvanic currents

Strong Rashba effects at surfaces and interfaces have attracted great attention for basic scientific exploration and practical applications. Here, the first-principles investigation shows that giant and tunable Rashba effects can be achieved in KTaO$_3$ (KTO) ultrathin films by applying biaxial stress. When increasing the in-plane compressive strain nearly to -5\%, the Rashba spin splitting energy reaches $E_{R}=140$ meV, approximately corresponding to the Rashba coupling constant $α_{R}=1.3$ eV Å. We investigate its strain-dependent crystal structures, energy bands, and related properties, and thereby elucidate the mechanism for the giant Rashba effects. Furthermore, we show that giant Rashba spin splitting can be kept in the presence of SrTiO$_3$ capping layer and/or Si substrate, and strong circular photogalvanic effect can be achieved to generate spin-polarized currents in the KTO thin films or related heterostructures, which are promising for future spintronic and optoelectronic applications.

Exact zero modes in a quantum compass chain under inhomogeneous transverse fields

We study the emergence of exact Majorana zero modes (EMZMs) in a one-dimensional quantum transverse compass model with both the nearest-neighbor interactions and transverse fields varying over space. By transforming the spin system into a quadratic Majorana-fermion model, we derive an exact formula for the number of the emergent EMZMs, which is found to depend on the partition nature of the lattice sites on which the magnetic fields vanish. We also derive explicit expressions for the wavefunctions of these EMZMs and show that they indeed depend on fine features of the foregoing partition of site indices. Based on the above rigorous results about the EMZMs, we provide an interpretation for the interesting dependence of the eigenstate-degeneracy on the transverse fields observed in prior literatures. As a special case, we employ a plane-wave ansatz to exactly solve an open compass chain with alternating nearest-neighbor interactions and staggered magnetic fields. Explicit forms of the canonical Majorana modes diagonalizing the model are given even for finite chains. We show that besides the possibly existing EMZMs, no almost Majorana zero modes exist unless the fields on both the two sublattices are turned off. Our results might shed light on the control of ground-state degeneracies by solely tuning the external fields in related systems.

Empowering A* Search Algorithms with Neural Networks for Personalized Route Recommendation

Personalized Route Recommendation (PRR) aims to generate user-specific route suggestions in response to users' route queries. Early studies cast the PRR task as a pathfinding problem on graphs, and adopt adapted search algorithms by integrating heuristic strategies. Although these methods are effective to some extent, they require setting the cost functions with heuristics. In addition, it is difficult to utilize useful context information in the search procedure. To address these issues, we propose using neural networks to automatically learn the cost functions of a classic heuristic algorithm, namely A* algorithm, for the PRR task. Our model consists of two components. First, we employ attention-based Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) to model the cost from the source to the candidate location by incorporating useful context information. Instead of learning a single cost value, the RNN component is able to learn a time-varying vectorized representation for the moving state of a user. Second, we propose to use a value network for estimating the cost from a candidate location to the destination. For capturing structural characteristics, the value network is built on top of improved graph attention networks by incorporating the moving state of a user and other context information. The two components are integrated in a principled way for deriving a more accurate cost of a candidate location. Extensive experiment results on three real-world datasets have shown the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed model.

Criticality and factorization in the Heisenberg chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

In this work, we address the ground state properties of the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg XYZ chain under the interplay of magnetic fields and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction which we interpret as an electric field. The identification of the regions of enhanced sensitivity determines criticality in this model. We calculate the Wigner-Yanase skew information (WYSI) as a coherence witness of an arbitrary two-qubit state under specific measurement bases. The WYSI is demonstrated to be a good indicator for detecting the quantum phase transitions. The finite-size scaling of coherence susceptibility is investigated. We find that the factorization line in the antiferromagnetic phase becomes the factorization volume in the gapless chiral phase induced by DM interactions, implied by the vanishing concurrence for a wide range of field. We also present the phase diagram of the model with three phases: antiferromagnetic, paramagnetic, and chiral, and point out a few common mistakes in deriving the correlation functions for the systems with broken reflection symmetry.

Vibration-assisted exciton transfer in molecular aggregates strongly coupled to confined light fields

We investigate exciton transport through one-dimensional molecular aggregates interacting strongly with a cavity mode. Unlike several prior theoretical studies treating the monomers as simple two-level systems, exciton-vibration coupling is explicitly included in the description of open quantum dynamics of the system. In the framework of the Holstein-Tavis-Cummings model with truncated vibrational space, we investigate the steady-state exciton transfer through both a molecular dimer and longer molecular chains. For a molecular dimer, we find that vibration-assisted exciton transfer occurs at strong exciton-cavity coupling regime where the vacuum Rabi splitting matches the frequency of a single vibrational quanta. Whereas for longer molecule chains, vibration-assisted transfer is found to occur at the ultrastrong exciton-cavity coupling limit. In addition, finite relaxation of vibrational modes induced by the continuous phonon bath is found to further facilitate the exciton transport in vibrational enhancement regimes.

On the exact solvability of the anisotropic central spin model: An operator approach

Using an operator approach based on a commutator scheme that has been previously applied to Richardson's reduced BCS model and the inhomogeneous Dicke model, we obtain general exact solvability requirements for an anisotropic central spin model with $XXZ$-type hyperfine coupling between the central spin and the spin bath, without any prior knowledge of integrability of the model. We outline the basic steps of the usage of the operator approach, and pedagogically summarize them into two \emph{Lemmas} and two \emph{Constraints}. Through a step-by-step construction of the eigen-problem, we show that the condition $g'^2_j-g_j^2=c$ naturally arises for the model to be exactly solvable, where $c$ is a constant independent of the bath-spin index $j$, and $\{g_j\}$ and $\{g'_j\}$ are the longitudinal and transverse hyperfine interactions, respectively. The obtained conditions and the resulting Bethe ansatz equations are consistent with that in previous literature.
