Particle decay from statistical thermal model in high energy nucleus-nucleus collision

In high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions, it is difficult to measure the contributions of resonance strong decay and weak decay to the final measured hadrons as well as the corresponding effects on some physical observables. To provide a reference from statistical thermal model, we performed a systematic analysis for the energy dependence of particle yield and yield ratios in Au + Au collisions. We found that the primary fraction of final hadrons decreases with increasing collision energy and somehow saturates around $\sqrt{s_\textrm{NN}}$ = 10 GeV, indicating a limiting temperature in hadronic interactions. The fraction of strong or weak decay for final hadrons show a different energy dependence behavior comparing to the primarily produced hadrons. These energy dependences of various particle yield and yield ratios from strong or weak decay can provide us with baselines for many hadronic observables in high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions.

Reconstruction of Hidden Representation for Robust Feature Extraction

This paper aims to develop a new and robust approach to feature representation. Motivated by the success of Auto-Encoders, we first theoretical summarize the general properties of all algorithms that are based on traditional Auto-Encoders: 1) The reconstruction error of the input can not be lower than a lower bound, which can be viewed as a guiding principle for reconstructing the input. Additionally, when the input is corrupted with noises, the reconstruction error of the corrupted input also can not be lower than a lower bound. 2) The reconstruction of a hidden representation achieving its ideal situation is the necessary condition for the reconstruction of the input to reach the ideal state. 3) Minimizing the Frobenius norm of the Jacobian matrix of the hidden representation has a deficiency and may result in a much worse local optimum value. We believe that minimizing the reconstruction error of the hidden representation is more robust than minimizing the Frobenius norm of the Jacobian matrix of the hidden representation. Based on the above analysis, we propose a new model termed Double Denoising Auto-Encoders (DDAEs), which uses corruption and reconstruction on both the input and the hidden representation. We demonstrate that the proposed model is highly flexible and extensible and has a potentially better capability to learn invariant and robust feature representations. We also show that our model is more robust than Denoising Auto-Encoders (DAEs) for dealing with noises or inessential features. Furthermore, we detail how to train DDAEs with two different pre-training methods by optimizing the objective function in a combined and separate manner, respectively. Comparative experiments illustrate that the proposed model is significantly better for representation learning than the state-of-the-art models.

Learning to Detect Multiple Photographic Defects

In this paper, we introduce the problem of simultaneously detecting multiple photographic defects. We aim at detecting the existence, severity, and potential locations of common photographic defects related to color, noise, blur and composition. The automatic detection of such defects could be used to provide users with suggestions for how to improve photos without the need to laboriously try various correction methods. Defect detection could also help users select photos of higher quality while filtering out those with severe defects in photo curation and summarization. To investigate this problem, we collected a large-scale dataset of user annotations on seven common photographic defects, which allows us to evaluate algorithms by measuring their consistency with human judgments. Our new dataset enables us to formulate the problem as a multi-task learning problem and train a multi-column deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to simultaneously predict the severity of all the defects. Unlike some existing single-defect estimation methods that rely on low-level statistics and may fail in many cases on natural photographs, our model is able to understand image contents and quality at a higher level. As a result, in our experiments, we show that our model has predictions with much higher consistency with human judgments than low-level methods as well as several baseline CNN models. Our model also performs better than an average human from our user study.

Three-Stream Convolutional Networks for Video-based Person Re-Identification

This paper aims to develop a new architecture that can make full use of the feature maps of convolutional networks. To this end, we study a number of methods for video-based person re-identification and make the following findings: 1) Max-pooling only focuses on the maximum value of a receptive field, wasting a lot of information. 2) Networks with different streams even including the one with the worst performance work better than networks with same streams, where each one has the best performance alone. 3) A full connection layer at the end of convolutional networks is not necessary. Based on these studies, we propose a new convolutional architecture termed Three-Stream Convolutional Networks (TSCN). It first uses different streams to learn different aspects of feature maps for attentive spatio-temporal fusion of video, and then merges them together to study some union features. To further utilize the feature maps, two architectures are designed by using the strategies of multi-scale and upsampling. Comparative experiments on iLIDS-VID, PRID-2011 and MARS datasets illustrate that the proposed architectures are significantly better for feature extraction than the state-of-the-art models.

Curvature-induced stiffening of a fish fin

How fish modulate their fin stiffness during locomotive manoeuvres remains unknown. We show that changing the fin's curvature modulates its stiffness. Modelling the fin as bendable bony rays held together by a membrane, we deduce that fin curvature is manifested as a misalignment of the principal bending axes between neighbouring rays. An external force causes neighbouring rays to bend and splay apart, and thus stretches the membrane. This coupling between bending the rays and stretching the membrane underlies the increase in stiffness. Using analysis of a 3D reconstruction of a Mackerel (Scomber japonicus) pectoral fin, we calculate the range of stiffnesses this fin is expected to span by changing curvature. The 3D reconstruction shows that, even in its geometrically flat state, a functional curvature is embedded within the fin microstructure owing to the morphology of individual rays. Since the ability of a propulsive surface to transmit force to the surrounding fluid is limited by its stiffness, the fin curvature controls the coupling between the fish and its surrounding fluid. Thereby, our results provide mechanical underpinnings and morphological predictions for the hypothesis that the spanned range of fin stiffnesses correlates with the behaviour and the ecological niche of the fish.

Beam energy dependence of $d$ and $\bar{d}$ productions in Au+Au collisions at RHIC

Light nuclei have much smaller binding energy compared to the temperature of the system created in heavy-ion collisions. Consequently, the distributions of light nuclei can be used to probe the freeze-out properties, such as correlation volume and local baryon density of the medium created in high-energy nuclear collisions. In this paper, we report the results of deuteron and anti-deuteron production in Au+Au collision at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4, and 200 GeV, measured by STAR at RHIC. The collision energy, centrality and transverse momentum dependence of the coalescence parameter $B_2$ for deuteron and anti-deuteron production are discussed. We find the values of $B_2$ for anti-deuteron are systematically lower than those for deuterons indicating the correlation volume of anti-baryon are larger than that of baryon. In addition, the values of $B_2$ are found to decrease with increasing collision energy and reach a minimum around $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 20 GeV implying a change of the equation of state of the medium in these collisions.
