Dark Matter Results From 54-Ton-Day Exposure of PandaX-II Experiment

We report a new search of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) using the combined low background data sets in 2016 and 2017 from the PandaX-II experiment in China. The latest data set contains a new exposure of 77.1 live day, with the background reduced to a level of 0.8$\times10^{-3}$ evt/kg/day, improved by a factor of 2.5 in comparison to the previous run in 2016. No excess events were found above the expected background. With a total exposure of 5.4$\times10^4$ kg day, the most stringent upper limit on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross section was set for a WIMP with mass larger than 100 GeV/c$^2$, with the lowest exclusion at 8.6$\times10^{-47}$ cm$^2$ at 40 GeV/c$^2$.

On the Performance of Forecasting Models in the Presence of Input Uncertainty

Nowadays, with the unprecedented penetration of renewable distributed energy resources (DERs), the necessity of an efficient energy forecasting model is more demanding than before. Generally, forecasting models are trained using observed weather data while the trained models are applied for energy forecasting using forecasted weather data. In this study, the performance of several commonly used forecasting methods in the presence of weather predictors with uncertainty is assessed and compared. Accordingly, both observed and forecasted weather data are collected, then the influential predictors for solar PV generation forecasting model are selected using several measures. Using observed and forecasted weather data, an analysis on the uncertainty of weather variables is represented by MAE and bootstrapping. The energy forecasting model is trained using observed weather data, and finally, the performance of several commonly used forecasting methods in solar energy forecasting is simulated and compared for a real case study.

Embedding Visual Hierarchy with Deep Networks for Large-Scale Visual Recognition

In this paper, a level-wise mixture model (LMM) is developed by embedding visual hierarchy with deep networks to support large-scale visual recognition (i.e., recognizing thousands or even tens of thousands of object classes), and a Bayesian approach is used to adapt a pre-trained visual hierarchy automatically to the improvements of deep features (that are used for image and object class representation) when more representative deep networks are learned along the time. Our LMM model can provide an end-to-end approach for jointly learning: (a) the deep networks to extract more discriminative deep features for image and object class representation; (b) the tree classifier for recognizing large numbers of object classes hierarchically; and (c) the visual hierarchy adaptation for achieving more accurate indexing of large numbers of object classes hierarchically. By supporting joint learning of the tree classifier, the deep networks and the visual hierarchy adaptation, our LMM algorithm can provide an effective approach for controlling inter-level error propagation effectively, thus it can achieve better accuracy rates on large-scale visual recognition. Our experiments are carried on ImageNet1K and ImageNet10K image sets, and our LMM algorithm can achieve very competitive results on both the accuracy rates and the computation efficiency as compared with the baseline methods.

An Initial Study on Load Forecasting Considering Economic Factors

This paper proposes a new objective function and quantile regression (QR) algorithm for load forecasting (LF). In LF, the positive forecasting errors often have different economic impact from the negative forecasting errors. Considering this difference, a new objective function is proposed to put different prices on the positive and negative forecasting errors. QR is used to find the optimal solution of the proposed objective function. Using normalized net energy load of New England network, the proposed method is compared with a time series method, the artificial neural network method, and the support vector machine method. The simulation results show that the proposed method is more effective in reducing the economic cost of the LF errors than the other three methods.

Probabilistic Models for Daily Peak Loads at Distribution Feeders

Load forecasting at distribution networks is more challenging than load forecasting at transmission networks because its load pattern is more stochastic and unpredictable. To plan sufficient resources and estimate DER hosting capacity, it is invaluable for a distribution network planner to get the probabilistic distribution of daily peak-load under a feeder over long term. In this paper, we model the probabilistic distribution functions of daily peak-load under a feeder using power law distributions, which is tested by improved Kolmogorov Smirnov test enhanced by the Monte Carlo simulation approach. In addition, the uncertainty of the modeling is quantified using the bootstrap method. The methodology of parameter estimation of the probabilistic model and the hypothesis test is elaborated in detail. In the case studies, it is shown using measurement data sets that the daily peak loads under several feeders follow the power law distribution by applying the proposed testing methods.

Spin-Dependent Weakly-Interacting-Massive-Particle--Nucleon Cross Section Limits from First Data of PandaX-II Experiment

New constraints are presented on the spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon interaction from the PandaX-II experiment, using a data set corresponding to a total exposure of 3.3$\times10^4$ kg-days. Assuming a standard axial-vector spin-dependent WIMP interaction with $^{129}$Xe and $^{131}$Xe nuclei, the most stringent upper limits on WIMP-neutron cross sections for WIMPs with masses above 10 GeV/c$^{2}$ are set in all dark matter direct detection experiments. The minimum upper limit of $4.1\times 10^{-41}$ cm$^2$ at 90\% confidence level is obtained for a WIMP mass of 40 GeV/c$^{2}$. This represents more than a factor of two improvement on the best available limits at this and higher masses. These improved cross-section limits provide more stringent constraints on the effective WIMP-proton and WIMP-neutron couplings.

Adaptive Adjustment of Noise Covariance in Kalman Filter for Dynamic State Estimation

Accurate estimation of the dynamic states of a synchronous machine (e.g., rotor s angle and speed) is essential in monitoring and controlling transient stability of a power system. It is well known that the covariance matrixes of process noise (Q) and measurement noise (R) have a significant impact on the Kalman filter s performance in estimating dynamic states. The conventional ad-hoc approaches for estimating the covariance matrixes are not adequate in achieving the best filtering performance. To address this problem, this paper proposes an adaptive filtering approach to adaptively estimate Q and R based on innovation and residual to improve the dynamic state estimation accuracy of the extended Kalman filter (EKF). It is shown through the simulation on the two-area model that the proposed estimation method is more robust against the initial errors in Q and R than the conventional method in estimating the dynamic states of a synchronous machine.

Adaptive Multi-Step Prediction based EKF to Power System Dynamic State Estimation

Power system dynamic state estimation is essential to monitoring and controlling power system stability. Kalman filtering approaches are predominant in estimation of synchronous machine dynamic states (i.e. rotor angle and rotor speed). This paper proposes an adaptive multi-step prediction (AMSP) approach to improve the extended Kalman filter s (EKF) performance in estimating the dynamic states of a synchronous machine. The proposed approach consists of three major steps. First, two indexes are defined to quantify the non-linearity levels of the state transition function and measurement function, respectively. Second, based on the non-linearity indexes, a multi prediction factor (Mp) is defined to determine the number of prediction steps. And finally, to mitigate the non-linearity impact on dynamic state estimation (DSE) accuracy, the prediction step repeats a few time based on Mp before performing the correction step. The two-area four-machine system is used to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed AMSP approach. It is shown through the Monte-Carlo method that a good trade-off between estimation accuracy and computational time can be achieved effectively through the proposed AMSP approach.

Higgs Boson Decay to Light Jets at the LHC

We study the Higgs boson $(h)$ decay to two light jets at the 14 TeV High-Luminosity-LHC (HL-LHC), where a light jet ($j$) represents any non-flavor tagged jet from the observational point of view. The decay mode $h\to gg$ is chosen as the benchmark since it is the dominant channel in the Standard Model (SM), but the bound obtained is also applicable to the light quarks $(j=u,d,s)$. We estimate the achievable bounds on the decay branching fractions through the associated production $Vh\ (V=W^\pm,Z)$. Events of the Higgs boson decaying into heavy (tagged) or light (un-tagged) jets are correlatively analyzed. We find that with 3000 fb$^{-1}$ data at the HL-LHC, we should expect approximately $1σ$ statistical significance on the SM $Vh(gg)$ signal in this channel. This corresponds to a reachable upper bound ${\rm BR}(h\to jj) \leq 4~ {\rm BR}^{SM}(h\to gg)$ at $95\%$ confidence level. A consistency fit also leads to an upper bound ${\rm BR}(h\to cc) < 15~ {\rm BR}^{SM}(h\to cc)$ at $95\%$ confidence level. The estimated bound may be further strengthened by adopting multiple variable analyses, or adding other production channels.

Dark Matter Results from First 98.7-day Data of PandaX-II Experiment

We report the WIMP dark matter search results using the first physics-run data of the PandaX-II 500 kg liquid xenon dual-phase time-projection chamber, operating at the China JinPing Underground Laboratory. No dark matter candidate is identified above background. In combination with the data set during the commissioning run, with a total exposure of 3.3$\times10^4$ kg-day,the most stringent limit to the spin-independent interaction between the ordinary and WIMP dark matter is set for a range of dark matter mass between 3.5 and 1000 GeV/c$^2$. The best upper limit on the scattering cross section is found $2.5\times 10^{-46}$ cm$^2$ for the WIMP mass 40 GeV/c$^2$ at 90% confidence level.

Simplified Models for Dark Matter Searches at the LHC

This document outlines a set of simplified models for dark matter and its interactions with Standard Model particles. It is intended to summarize the main characteristics that these simplified models have when applied to dark matter searches at the LHC, and to provide a number of useful expressions for reference. The list of models includes both s-channel and t-channel scenarios. For s-channel, spin-0 and spin-1 mediation is discussed, and also realizations where the Higgs particle provides a portal between the dark and visible sectors. The guiding principles underpinning the proposed simplified models are spelled out, and some suggestions for implementation are presented.

Limits on Excited Quarks from the ATLAS Multi-jet Search

We interpret the recent ATLAS multi-jet search results using 20.3 fb-1 data at sqrt(s)=8 TeV in the context of searching for excited quarks. Within the effective field theory framework, using the null results of that search, our analysis shows that the excited quark mass below 5 TeV can be excluded at the 95% confidence level. Our analysis also indicates that when the validation of effective field theory is considered, the limit can be largely compromised.

Erratum: Bounds on Invisible Higgs boson Decays from $t\bar{t}H$ Production

Bounds on invisible decays of the Higgs boson from $t\bar{t}H$ production were inferred from a CMS search for stop quarks decaying to $t\bar{t}$ and missing transverse momentum. Limits on the production of $t\bar{t}H$ relied on the efficiency of the CMS selection for $t\bar{t}H$, as measured in a simulated sample. An error in the generation of the simulated sample lead to a significant overestimate of the selection efficiency. Corrected results are presented.

Simplified Models for Dark Matter and Missing Energy Searches at the LHC

The study of collision events with missing energy as searches for the dark matter (DM) component of the Universe are an essential part of the extensive program looking for new physics at the LHC. Given the unknown nature of DM, the interpretation of such searches should be made broad and inclusive. This report reviews the usage of simplified models in the interpretation of missing energy searches. We begin with a brief discussion of the utility and limitation of the effective field theory approach to this problem. The bulk of the report is then devoted to several different simplified models and their signatures, including s-channel and t-channel processes. A common feature of simplified models for DM is the presence of additional particles that mediate the interactions between the Standard Model and the particle that makes up DM. We consider these in detail and emphasize the importance of their inclusion as final states in any coherent interpretation. We also review some of the experimental progress in the field, new signatures, and other aspects of the searches themselves. We conclude with comments and recommendations regarding the use of simplified models in Run-II of the LHC.

Collider Bounds on Indirect Dark Matter Searches: The $WW$ Final State

We describe an effective theory of interaction between pairs of dark matter particles (denoted $χ$) and pairs of $W$ bosons. Such an interaction could accommodate $χ\barχ\rightarrow WW$ processes, which are a major focus of indirect dark matter experiments, as well as $pp \rightarrow W\rightarrow Wχ\barχ$ processes, which would predict excesses at the LHC in the $W$+MET final-state. We reinterpret an ATLAS $W$+MET analysis in the hadronic mode and translate the bounds to the space of indirect detection signals. We also reinterpret the $W$+MET analysis in terms of graviton theory through the processes $W\rightarrow WG$ and $Z\rightarrow ZG$ in which $G$ is invisible. Finally, the final state is interpreted in terms of a $W'$ model where $W'\rightarrow WZ$, where $W$ decays hadronically and $Z$ decays to neutrinos.

Mono-everything: combined limits on dark matter production at colliders from multiple final states

Searches for dark matter production at particle colliders are complementary to direct-detection and indirect-detection experiments, and especially powerful for small masses, $m_χ<100$ GeV. An important collider dark matter signature is due to the production of a pair of these invisible particles with the initial-state radiation of a standard model particle. Currently, collider searches use individual and nearly orthogonal final states to search for initial-state jets, photons or massive gauge bosons. We combine these results across final states and across experiments to give the strongest current collider-based limits in the context of effective field theories, and map these to limits on dark matter interactions with nuclei and to dark matter self-annhiliation.

Limits on Four-Top Production from the ATLAS Same-sign Top-quark Search

We repurpose the recent ATLAS search for same-sign top quarks in data with 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ in the context of a search for production of four top quarks. Using the null results of that search, we place limits on the four-top-quark production cross section of about 1 pb. These limits are larger than the expected Standard Model rate for four-top-quark production, but are already strong enough to place interesting constraints on models which enhance that rate. We interpret these results in the context of models in which the right-handed top quark is composite and find limits on the compositeness scale of about 700 GeV.
