Nonexistence results for a higher-order evolution equation with an inhomogeneous term depending on time and space

We consider a higher-order evolution equation with an inhomogeneous term depending on time and space. We first derive a general criterion for the nonexistence of weak solutions. Next, we study the particular case when the inhomogeneity depends only on space. In that case, we obtain the first critical exponent in the sense of Fujita, as well as the second critical exponent in the sense of Lee and Ni.

Strauss exponent for semilinear wave equations with scattering space dependent damping

It is believed or conjectured that the semilinear wave equations with scattering space dependent damping admit the Strauss critical exponent, see Ikehata-Todorova-Yordanov \cite{ITY}(the bottom in page 2) and Nishihara-Sobajima-Wakasugi \cite{N2}(conjecture iii in page 4). In this work, we are devoted to showing the conjecture is true at least when the decay rate of the space dependent variable coefficients before the damping is larger than 2. Also, if the nonlinear term depends only on the derivative of the solution, we may prove the upper bound of the lifespan is the same as that of the solution of the corresponding problem without damping. This shows in another way the \lq\lq hyperbolicity" of the equation.

Short time blow-up by negative mass term for semilinear wave equations with small data and scattering damping

In this paper we study blow-up and lifespan estimate for solutions to the Cauchy problem with small data for semilinear wave equations with scattering damping and negative mass term. We show that the negative mass term will play a dominant role when the decay of its coefficients is not so fast, thus the solutions will blow up in a finite time. What is more, we establish a lifespan estimate from above which is much shorter than the usual one.

Blow-up and lifespan estimate to a nonlinear wave equation in Schwarzschild spacetime

In \cite{Luk}, Luk proved global existence for semilinear wave equations in Kerr spacetime with small angular momentum($a\ll M$) \[ \Box_{g_K}ϕ=F(\partial ϕ), \] when the quadratic nonlinear term satisfies the null condition. In this work, we will show that if the null condition does not hold, at most we can have almost global existence for semilinear wave equations with quadratic nonlinear term in Schwarzschild spacetime, which is the special case of Kerr with $a=0$ \[ \Box_{g_S}ϕ=(\partial_tϕ)^2, \] where $\Box_{g_S}$ denotes the D'Alembert operator associated with Schwarzschild metric. What is more, if the power of the nonlinear term is replaced with $p$ satisfying $3/2\le p< 2$, we still can show blow-up, no matter how small the initial data are. We do not have to assume that the support of the data should be far away from the event horizon.

Wave-like blow-up for semilinear wave equations with scattering damping and negative mass term

In this paper we establish blow-up results and lifespan estimates for semilinear wave equations with scattering damping and negative mass term for subcritical power, which is the same as that of the corresponding problem without mass term, and also the same as that of the corresponding problem without both damping and mass term. For this purpose, we have to use the comparison argument twice, due to the damping and mass term, in additional to a key multiplier. Finally, we get the desired results by an iteration argument.

Global Instability of the Multi-dimensional Plane Shocks for the isothermal flow

In this paper, we are concerned with the long time behavior of the piecewise smooth solutions to the generalized Riemann problem governed by the compressible isothermal Euler equations in two and three dimensions. Non-existence result is established for the fan-shaped wave structure solution, including two shocks and one contact discontinuity and which is a perturbation of plane waves. Therefore, unlike the one-dimensional case, the multi-dimensional plane shocks are not stable globally. What is more, the sharp lifespan estimate is established which is the same as the lifespan estimate for the nonlinear wave equations in both two and three space dimensions.

Weighted $L^2-L^2$ estimate for wave equation and its applications

In this work we establish a weighted $L^2-L^2$ estimate for inhomogeneous wave equation in 3-D, by introducing a Morawetz multiplier with weight of power $s(1<s<2)$, and then integrating on the light cones and $t$ slice. With this weighted $L^2-L^2$ estimate in hand, we may give a new proof of global existence for small data Cauchy problem of semilinear wave equation with supercritical power in 3-D. What is more, by combining the Huygens' principle for wave equations in 3-D, the global existence for semilinear wave equation with scale invariant damping in 3-D is established.

The sharp lifespan estimate for semilinear damped wave equation with Fujita critical power in high dimensions

This paper is concerned about the lifespan estimate to the Cauchy problem of semilinear damped wave equations with the Fujita critical exponent in high dimensions$(n\geq 4)$. We establish the sharp upper bound of the lifespan in the following form \begin{equation}\nonumber\\ \begin{aligned} T(\varepsilon)\leq \exp(C\varepsilon^{-\frac 2n}), \end{aligned} \end{equation} by using the heat kernel as the test function.

Nonexistence of global solutions of wave equations with weak time-dependent damping and combined nonlinearity

In our previous two works, we studied the blow-up and lifespan estimates for damped wave equations with a power nonlinearity of the solution or its derivative, with scattering damping independently. In this work, we are devoted to establishing a similar result for a combined nonlinearity. Comparing to the result of wave equation without damping, one can say that the scattering damping has no influence.

Nonexistence of global solutions of nonlinear wave equations with weak time-dependent damping related to Glassey conjecture

This work is devoted to the nonexistence of global-in-time energy solutions of nonlinear wave equation of derivative type with weak time-dependent damping in the scattering and scale invariant range. By introducing some multipliers to absorb the damping term, we succeed in establishing the same upper bound of the lifespan for the scattering damping as the non-damped case, which is a part of so-called Glassey conjecture on nonlinear wave equations. We also study an upper bound of the lifespan for the scale invariant damping with the same method.

Blow-up for semilinear damped wave equations with sub-Strauss exponent in the scattering case

It is well-known that the critical exponent for semilinear damped wave equations is Fujita exponent when the damping is effective. Lai, Takamura and Wakasa in 2017 have obtained a blow-up result not only for super-Fujita exponent but also for the one closely related to Strauss exponent when the damping is scaling invariant and its constant is relatively small, which has been recently extended by Ikeda and Sobajima. Introducing a multiplier for the time-derivative of the spatial integral of unknown functions, we succeed in employing the technics on the analysis for semilinear wave equations and proving a blow-up result for semilinear damped wave equations with sub-Strauss exponent when the damping is in the scattering range.

Blow-up for semilinear wave equations with the scale invariant damping and super-Fujita exponent

The blow-up for semilinear wave equations with the scale invariant damping has been well-studied for sub-Fujita exponent. However, for super-Fujita exponent, there is only one blow-up result which is obtained in 2014 by Wakasugi in the case of non-effective damping. In this paper we extend his result in two aspects by showing that: (I) the blow-up will happen for bigger exponent, which is closely related to the Strauss exponent, the critical number for non-damped semilinear wave equations; (II) such a blow-up result is established for a wider range of the constant than the known non-effective one in the damping term.

Global existence of critical nonlinear wave equation with time dependent variable coefficients

In this paper, we establish global existence of smooth solutions for the Cauchy problem of the critical nonlinear wave equation with time dependent variable coefficients in three space dimensions {equation}\partial_{tt}ϕ-\partial_{x_i}\big(g^{ij}(t,x)\partial_{x_j}ϕ\big)+ϕ^5=0, mathbb{R}_t \times \mathbb{R}_x^3,{equation} where $\big(g_{ij}(t,x)\big)$ is a regular function valued in the spacetime of $3\times3$ positive definite matrix and $\big(g^{ij}(t,x)\big)$ its inverse matrix. Here and in the sequence, a repeated sum on an index in lower and upper position is never indicated. In the constant coefficients case, the result of global existence is due to Grillakis \cite{Grillakis1}; and in the time-independent variable coefficients case, the result of global existence and regularity is due to Ibrahim and Majdoub \cite{Ibrahim}. The key point of our proofs is to show that the energy cannot concentrate at any point. For that purpose, following Christodoulou and Klainerman \cite{Chris}, we use a null frame associated to an optical function to construct a geometric multiplier similar to the well-known Morawetz multiplier. Then we use comparison theorem originated from Riemannian Geometry to estimate the error terms. Finally, using Strichartz inequality due to \cite{Smith} as Ibrahim and Majdoub \cite{Ibrahim}, we obtain global existence.

Global Existence of the Critical Semilinear Wave Equations with Variable Coefficients Outside Obstacles

In this paper, we consider exterior problem of the critical semilinear wave equation in three space dimensions with variable coefficients and prove global existence of smooth solutions. Similar to the constant coefficients case, we show that the energy cannot concentrate at any point $(t,x)\in(0,\infty)\timesΩ$. For that purpose, following Ibrahim and Majdoub \cite{Ibrahim}, we use a geometric multiplier close to the well-known Morawetz multiplier used in the constant coefficients case. Then we use comparison theorem from Riemannian Geometry to estimate the error terms. Finally, using Strichartz inequality as in Smith and Sogge \cite{Sogge}, we get the global existence.
