Modal Semantics for Reasoning with Probability and Uncertainty

This paper belongs to the field of probabilistic modal logic, focusing on a comparative analysis of two distinct semantics: one rooted in Kripke semantics and the other in neighbourhood semantics. The primary distinction lies in the following: The latter allows us to adequately express belief functions (lower probabilities) over propositions, whereas the former does not. Thus, neighbourhood semantics is more expressive. The main part of the work is a section in which we study the modal equivalence between probabilistic Kripke models and a subclass of belief neighbourhood models, namely additive ones. We study how to obtain modally equivalent structures.

Set theory and tableaux for teaching propositional logic

In this work we suggest the use of a set-theoretical interpretation of semantic tableaux for teaching propositional logic. If the student has previous notions of basic set theory, this approach to semantical tableaux can clarify her the way semantic trees operate, linking the syntactical and semantical sides of the process. Also, it may be useful for the introduction of more advanced topics in logic, like modal logic.

An overview of type theories

Pure type systems arise as a generalisation of simply typed lambda calculus. The contemporary development of mathematics has renewed the interest in type theories, as they are not just the object of mere historical research, but have an active role in the development of computational science and core mathematics. It is worth exploring some of them in depth, particularly predicative Martin-Löf's intuitionistic type theory and impredicative Coquand's calculus of constructions. The logical and philosophical differences and similarities between them will be studied, showing the relationship between these type theories and other fields of logic.
