Process tomography of dynamical decoupling in a dense optically trapped atomic ensemble

Atomic ensembles have many potential applications in quantum information science. Owing to collective enhancement, working with ensembles at high densities increases the overall efficiency of quantum operations, but at the same time also increases the collision rate and leads to faster decoherence. Here we report on experiments with optically trapped 87Rb atoms demonstrating a 20-fold increase of the coherence time when a dynamical decoupling sequence with more than 200 pi-pulses is applied. We perform quantum process tomography and demonstrate that using the decoupling scheme a dense ensemble with an optical depth of 230 can be used as an atomic memory with coherence times exceeding 3 sec.

Can one passively phase lock 25 fiber lasers?

Yes, it is possible to phase lock 25 fiber lasers but only for a short time. Our experiments on passively phase locking two-dimensional arrays of coupled fiber lasers reveal that the average phase locking level of 25 lasers is low ($20%-30%$) but can exceed 90% on rare instantaneous events. The average phase locking level was found to decrease for larger number of lasers in the array and increase with the connectivity of the array.

Fiber amplification of radially and azimuthally polarized laser light

The results on amplifying either radially or azimuthally polarized light with a fiber amplifier are presented. Experimental results reveal that more than 85% polarization purity can be retained at the output even with 40dB amplification, and that efficient conversion of the amplified light to linear polarization can be obtained.

Phase locking of coupled lasers with many longitudinal modes

Detailed experimental and theoretical investigations on two coupled fiber lasers, each with many longitudinal modes, reveal that the behavior of the longitudinal modes depends on both the coupling strength as well as the detuning between them. For low to moderate coupling strength only longitudinal modes which are common for both lasers phase-lock while those that are not common gradually disappear. For larger coupling strengths, the longitudinal modes that are not common reappear and phase-lock. When the coupling strength approaches unity the coupled lasers behave as a single long cavity with correspondingly denser longitudinal modes. Finally, we show that the gradual increase in phase-locking as a function of the coupling strength results from competition between phase-locked and non phase-locked longitudinal modes.

Suppression of collisional decoherence

We employ a continuous dynamical decoupling scheme to suppress the decoherence induced by elastic collisions of cold atoms. Using a continuous echo pulse we achieve a thirty-fold increase in the coherence time of Rb87 atoms trapped in a dipole trap. Coherence times of more than 100ms are demonstrated for an ensemble with an optical depth of 120.

Semilinear response for the heating rate of cold atoms in vibrating traps

The calculation of the heating rate of cold atoms in vibrating traps requires a theory that goes beyond the Kubo linear response formulation. If a strong "quantum chaos" assumption does not hold, the analysis of transitions shows similarities with a percolation problem in energy space. We show how the texture and the sparsity of the perturbation matrix, as determined by the geometry of the system, dictate the result. An improved sparse random matrix model is introduced: it captures the essential ingredients of the problem, and leads to a generalized variable range hopping picture.

Short-Time Enhanced Decay of Coherent Excitations in Bose-Einstein Condensates

We study, both experimentally and theoretically, short-time modifications of the decay of excitations in a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) embedded in an optical lattice. Strong enhancement of the decay is observed compared to the Golden Rule results. This enhancement of decay increases with the lattice depth. It indicates that the description of decay modifications of few-body quantum systems also holds for decay of many-body excitations of a BEC.

Temporal behavior of synchronization between chaotic fiber lasers

A new configuration for synchronizing two chaotic fiber lasers, which includes both coupling and losses, is presented. Experimental and calculated results reveal that the synchronization time can be significantly shorter than with configuration that have only coupling.

Coherent addition of two dimensional array of fiber lasers

Configurations for efficient free space coherent addition of four separate fiber lasers arranged in two dimensional array are presented. They include compact and robust interferometric combiners that can be inserted either inside or outside the cavity of the combined lasers system. The results reveal that over 85% combining efficiency can be obtained.

Spectroscopy of Strong-Pulse Superradiance in a Bose-Einstein condensate

We study experimentally superradiance in a Bose-Einstein condensate using a two-frequency pump beam. By controlling the frequency difference between the beam components, we measure the spectrum of the backward (energy-mismatched) superradiant atomic modes. In addition, we show that the populations of these modes display coherent time-dynamics. These results are compared to a semi-classical model based on coupled Schroedinger-Maxwell equations.

Quantum Phases of Ultra Cold Bosons in Incommensurate 1D Optical Lattices

We study theoretically a BEC loaded into an optical lattice in the tight-binding regime, with a second, weak incommensurate lattice acting as a perturbation. We find, using direct diagonalization of small systems and a large scale, number conserving Gutzwiller-based mean field approach, the phase diagram of the model. We show that the superfluid, Mott-insulator and Bose-glass phases familiar from disordered systems appear here as well, with a localization transition occurring already in a 1D geometry, contrary to the well known Anderson localization. We complement these results with GPE simulations, and stress the fundamental difference between commensurate and incommensurate lattices. These results, together with calculations we have performed for realistic scenarios, suggest that this setup is well suited for available experimental realizations.

Collisional decay of a strongly driven Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the collisional decay of a strongly driven Bose-Einstein condensate oscillating between two momentum modes. The resulting products of the decay are found to strongly deviate from the usual s-wave halo. Using a stochastically seeded classical field method we simulate the collisional manifold. These results are also explained by a model of colliding Bloch states.

Stable regions and singular trajectories in chaotic soft wall billiards

We present numerical and experimental results for the development of islands of stability in atom-optics billiards with soft walls. As the walls are soften, stable regions appear near singular periodic trajectories in converging (focusing) and dispersing billiards, and are surrounded by areas of "stickiness" in phase-space. The size of these islands depends on the softness of the potential in a very sensitive way.

Suppression of inhomogeneous broadening in rf spectroscopy of optically trapped atoms

We present a novel method for reducing the inhomogeneous frequency broadening in the hyperfine splitting of the ground state of optically trapped atoms. This reduction is achieved by the addition of a weak light field, spatially mode-matched with the trapping field and whose frequency is tuned in-between the two hyperfine levels. We experimentally demonstrate the new scheme with Rb 85 atoms, and report a 50-fold narrowing of the rf spectrum.

Direct observation of the phonon energy in a Bose-Einstein condensate by tomographic imaging

The momentum and energy of phonons in a Bose-Einstein condensate are measured directly from a time-of-flight image by computerized tomography. We find that the same atoms that carry the momentum of the excitation also carry the excitation energy. The measured energy is in agreement with the Bogoliubov spectrum. Hydrodynamic simulations are performed which confirm our observation.
