Counting lattices in products of trees

A BMW group of degree $(m,n)$ is a group that acts simply transitively on vertices of the product of two regular trees of degrees $m$ and $n$. We show that the number of commensurability classes of BMW groups of degree $(m,n)$ is bounded between $(mn)^{αmn}$ and $(mn)^{βmn}$ for some $0<α<β$. In fact, we show that the same bounds hold for virtually simple BMW groups. We introduce a random model for BMW groups of degree $(m,n)$ and show that asymptotically almost surely a random BMW group in this model is irreducible and hereditarily just-infinite.

Highly twisted plat diagrams

We prove that the knots and links in the infinite set of $3$-highly twisted $2m$-plats, with $m \geq 2$, are all hyperbolic. This should be compared with a result of Futer-Purcell for $6$-highly twisted diagrams. While their proof uses geometric methods our proof is achieved by showing that the complements of such knots or links are unannular and atoroidal. This is done by using a new approach involving an Euler characteristic argument.

On the Chabauty space of $\textrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$, I: lattices and grafting

This is the first of two papers on the global topology of the space $\textrm{Sub}(G)$ of all closed subgroups of $G=\textrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$, equipped with the Chabauty topology. In this paper, we study the spaces of lattices and elementary subgroups of $G$, and prove a continuity result for conformal grafting of (possibly infinite type) vectored orbifolds that will be useful in both papers. More specifically, we first identify the homotopy type of the space of elementary subgroups of $G$, following Baik-Clavier. Then for a fixed finite type hyperbolizable $2$-orbifold $S$, we show that the space $\textrm{Sub}_S(G)$ of all lattices $Γ< G$ with $Γ\backslash \mathbb{H}^2 \cong S$ is a fiber orbibundle over the moduli space $\mathcal M(S)$. We describe the closure $\overline{\textrm{Sub}_S(G)}$ in $\textrm{Sub}(G)$ and show that $\partial \textrm{Sub}_S(G)$ has a neighborhood deformation retract within $\overline{\textrm{Sub}_S(G)}$. When $S$ is not one of finitely many low complexity orbifolds, we show that $\overline{\textrm{Sub}_S(G)}$ is simply connected. In the simplest exceptional case, when $S$ is a sphere with three total cusps and cone points, we show that $\overline{\textrm{Sub}_S(G)}$ is a (usually nontrivial) lens space. Finally, we show that when $(X_i,v_i) \to (X_\infty,v_\infty)$ is a (possibly infinite type) smoothly converging sequence of vectored hyperbolic $2$-orbifolds, and we graft in Euclidean annuli along suitable collections of simple closed curves in the $X_i$, then after uniformization, the resulting vectored hyperbolic $2$-orbifolds converge smoothly to the expected limit. As part of the proof, we give a new lower bound on the hyperbolic distance between points in a grafted orbifold in terms of their original distance.

Hyperbolic groups with logarithmic separation profile

We prove that hyperbolic groups with logarithmic separation profiles split over cyclic groups. This shows that such groups can be inductively built from Fuchsian groups and free groups by amalgamations and HNN extensions over finite or virtually cyclic groups. However, we show that not all groups admitting such a hierarchy have logarithmic separation profile by providing an example of a surface amalgam over a cyclic group with superlogarithmic separation profile.

Volume vs. Complexity of Hyperbolic Groups

We prove that for a one-ended hyperbolic graph $X$, the size of the quotient $X/G$ by a group $G$ acting freely and cocompactly bounds from below the number of simplices in an Eilenberg-MacLane space for $G$. We apply this theorem to show that one-ended hyperbolic cubulated groups (or more generally, one-ended hyperbolic groups with globally stable cylinders à la Rips-Sela) cannot contain isomorphic finite-index subgroups of different indices.

Virtually free groups are stable in permutations

We prove that finitely generated virtually free groups are stable in permutations. As an application, we show that almost-periodic almost-automorphisms of labelled graphs are close to periodic automorphisms.

Invariable generation does not pass to finite index subgroups

Using small cancellation methods, we show that the property invariable generation does not pass to finite index subgroups, answering questions of Wiegold and Kantor-Lubotzky-Shalev. We further show that a finitely generated group that is invariably generated is not necessarily finitely invariably generated, answering a question of Cox. The same results were also obtained independently by Minasyan.

Edge Kempe equivalence of regular graph covers

Let $G$ be a finite $d$-regular graph with a proper edge coloring. An edge Kempe switch is a new proper edge coloring of $G$ obtained by switching the two colors along some bi-chromatic cycle. We prove that any other edge coloring can be obtained by performing finitely many edge Kempe switches, provided that $G$ is replaced with a suitable finite covering graph. The required covering degree is bounded above by a constant depending only on $d$.

Stallings folds for CAT(0) cube complexes and quasiconvex subgroups

We describe a higher dimensional analogue of the Stallings folding sequence for group actions on CAT(0) cube complexes. We use it to give a characterization of quasiconvex subgroups of hyperbolic groups which act properly co-compactly on CAT(0) cube complexes via finiteness properties of their hyperplane stabilizers.

Uniform symplicity of groups with proximal action

We prove that groups acting boundedly and order-primitively on linear orders or acting extremly proximality on a Cantor set (the class including various Higman-Thomson groups and Neretin groups of almost automorphisms of regular trees, also called groups of spheromorphisms) are uniformly simple. Explicit bounds are provided.

Sphere boundaries of hyperbolic groups

We show that a one-ended simply connected at infinity hyperbolic group $G$ with enough codimension-1 surface subgroups has $\partial G \cong \mathbb{S}^2$. Combined with a result of Markovic, our result gives a new characterization of virtually fundamental groups of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Keywords: CAT(0) cube complexes, Hyperbolic groups, hyperbolic 3-manifolds.

The Neretin groups

This is the extended version of the talk we gave during the Arbeitsgemeinschaft on totally disconnected locally compact groups, held in Oberwolfach in October 2014. We give the definition of the Neretin group of spheromorphisms of the infinite $q$-regular tree, and describe its natural totally disconnected group topology, which is not the one that usually appears as the first guess. We also present the proof of simplicity due to Kapoudjian. We do not make any claims concerning the originality of the presented results.

Resolutions of CAT(0) cube complexes and accessibility properties

In [4], Dunwoody defined resolutions for finitely presented group actions on simplicial trees, that is, an action of the group on a tree with smaller edge and vertex stabilizers. He, moreover, proved that the size of the resolution is bounded by a constant depending only on the group. Extending Dunwoody's definition of patterns we construct resolutions for group actions on a general finite dimensional CAT(0) cube complex. In dimension two, we bound the number of hyperplanes of this resolution. We apply this result for surfaces and 3-manifolds to bound collections of codimension-1 submanifolds.

On regular CAT(0) cube complexes

We provide a necessary and sufficient condition on a finite flag simplicial complex, L, for which there exists a unique CAT(0) cube complex whose vertex links are all isomorphic to L. We then find new examples of such CAT(0) cube complexes and prove that their automorphism groups are virtually simple. The latter uses a result, which we prove in the appendix, about the simplicity of certain subgroups of the automorphism group of a rank-one CAT(0) cube complex. This result generalizes previous results by Tits and by Haglund and Paulin.
