Monte-Carlo Study Of Higher-Order Cumulants of Net-Particle Distributions in $p+p$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Measurement of higher order cumulants of the distributions of conserved quantities, like net-charge, net-baryon and net-strangeness in heavy-ion collisions, is proposed as a sensitive tool to determine the freeze-out parameters and the nature of phase transitions at the LHC energies. Baseline measurements for heavy-ion collisions are essential to understand the experimental measurements. Recently, several experimental observations have shown some QGP-like scenarios in small systems (pp collisions). We report the first Monte-Carlo study of the measurements of cumulants and their ratios for net-charge, net-hadron, net-kaon, net-baryon, and net-proton distributions in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV using pQCD models like Pythia8 and Herwig. We also discuss the effect of different particle production mechanisms on the higher-order cumulants. This simulation study will serve as a baseline for future measurements at the LHC. Furthermore, it will shed more light on the measurement of cumulants and the connection between small systems and heavy-ion collisions at the LHC.

Constructing probability density function of net-proton multiplicity distributions using Pearson curve method

The probability density functions of proton, anti-proton, and net-proton multiplicity distributions are constructed from the Beam Energy Scan results of the STAR experiment using the Pearson curve method. The constructed distributions of proton and anti-proton are compared with Poisson and Binomial distributions. The net-proton probability distributions are compared with Skellam distributions to study the O(4) criticality near the chiral crossover transition. The $C_{6}/C_{2}$ results estimated from the obtained PDFs are compared with Skellam and Binomial baselines for the Beam Energy Scan data. The current study shows some signatures of O(4) criticality, which can be further investigated by precision measurements of the cumulants and understanding the contribution of non-critical fluctuations to them. This study also provides a baseline for the higher-order cumulant measurement in the upcoming RHIC BES II program and future LHC run.

Baseline study for net-proton number fluctuations at top energies available at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with the Angantyr model

The multiplicity percentile dependence of cumulants, of net-proton number distributions in Au$-$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = $ 200 GeV and Pb$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = $ 2.76 TeV has been investigated using the Angantyr model (the heavy-ion extension of the \textsc{Pythia 8} model). The effects of finite transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm T}$) and pseudorapidity ($η$) acceptance on the net-proton cumulants have also been studied. Furthermore, the effects of the hydrodynamic expansion and feed down from weak decays were explored. It was found that radial flow has substantial impact on the cumulants and their ratios, while weak decays have a finite but relatively smaller effect. The obtained values of cumulants and their ratios with the Angantyr model, where the formation of thermalized medium is not assumed can serve as a baseline for future measurements.

Higher moment fluctuations of identified particle distributions from ALICE

Cumulants of conserved charges fluctuations are regarded as a potential tool to study the criticality in the QCD phase diagram and to determine the freeze-out parameters in a model-independent way. At LHC energies, the measurements of the ratio of the net-baryon (net-proton) cumulants can be used to test the lattice QCD predictions. In this work, we present the first measurements of cumulants of the net-proton number distributions up to $4^{th}$ order in Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 and 5.02 TeV as a function of collision centrality. We compare our cumulant ratios results with the STAR experiment net-proton results measured in the first phase of the Beam Energy Scan program at RHIC. The results can be used to obtain the chemical freeze-out parameters at LHC.

Recent results on event-by-event fluctuations in ALICE at the LHC

Non-statistical event-by-event fluctuations in relativistic heavy-ion collisions have been proposed as a probe of the phase transition of hadronic matter to a deconfined phase of quarks and gluons, the so-called Quark-Gluon Plasma. In a thermodynamical picture of the strongly interacting system formed in heavy-ion collisions, the dynamical fluctuations of net-charge, fluctuations of the mean transverse momentum, mean multiplicity and balance functions are related to the fundamental properties of the system, hence they may reveal information about the QCD phase transition. In this article, recent results on event-by-event measurements of net-charge fluctuations, the measurement of the balance function and mean transverse momentum fluctuations are discussed.
