Parity-unfolded distillation architecture for noise-biased platforms

We introduce the parity-unfolded architecture, a fault-tolerant quantum computing scheme that relies on direct preparation and teleportation of small-angle rotations $ Z^{1/2^{k}}$ rather than approximating them with the conventional (Clifford + $T$) gate set. The architecture is enabled by efficient distillation of gates from an arbitrary level of the Clifford hierarchy, which we refer to as parity unfolding. With it, a state $|Z_k\rangle = Z^{1/2^{k}}|{+}\rangle$ can be prepared fault-tolerantly using $2^{k+3} + O(2^{k/2})$ biased-noise qubits on a planar chip with nearest-neighbour connectivity. For algorithms requiring native $Z^{1/2^{k}}$ gates, such as the Quantum Fourier Transform and phase estimation, the proposed scheme allows to reduce resource overheads for up to $k=7$, i.e., up to $T^{1/32}$. Furthermore, when used for the synthesis of arbitrary small-angle rotations, parity-unfolded distillation of ($T$ + $\sqrt{T}$) reduces the minimum achievable logical error rate by 43% while cutting the resource requirements by 26%, when compared to unfolded distillation of only the $T$ gate.

YZ-plane measurement-based quantum computation: Universality and Parity Architecture implementation

We define the class of register-logic graphs and prove that any uniformly deterministic measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC) where the inputs coincide with the outputs must be driven on such graphs by measurements in the $YZ$ plane of the Bloch sphere. This observation is revisited in the context that goes beyond uniform determinism, where we present a universal $YZ$-plane-only measurement pattern and establish a connection between $YZ$-plane-only and $XZ$-plane-only patterns. These results conclude the line of research on universal patterns with measurements restricted to one of the principal planes of the Bloch sphere. We further demonstrate, within the framework of the Parity Architecture, that $YZ$-plane patterns with the register-logic graph can be embedded into another graph with purely local interactions, and we extend this case to the scenario of universal quantum computation.

Unbounded Quantum Advantage in Communication with Minimal Input Scaling

In communication complexity-like problems, previous studies have shown either an exponential quantum advantage or an unbounded quantum advantage with an exponentially large input set $Θ(2^{n})$ bits with respect to classical communication $Θ(n)$ bits. In the former, the quantum and classical separation grows exponentially in input while the latter's quantum communication resource is a constant. Remarkably, it was still open whether an unbounded quantum advantage exists while the inputs do not scale exponentially. Here we answer this question affirmatively using an input size of optimal order. Considering two variants as tasks: 1) distributed computation of relation and 2) {\it relation reconstruction}, we study the one-way zero-error communication complexity of a relation induced by a distributed clique labelling problem for orthogonality graphs. While we prove no quantum advantage in the first task, we show an {\it unbounded quantum advantage} in relation reconstruction without public coins. Specifically, for a class of graphs with order $m$, the quantum complexity is $Θ(1)$ while the classical complexity is $Θ(\log_2 m)$. Remarkably, the input size is $Θ(\log_2 m)$ bits and the order of its scaling with respect to classical communication is {\it minimal}. This is exponentially better compared to previous works. Additionally, we prove a lower bound (linear in the number of maximum cliques) on the amount of classical public coin necessary to overcome the separation in the scenario of restricted communication and connect this to the existence of Orthogonal Arrays. Finally, we highlight some applications of this task to semi-device-independent dimension witnessing and the detection of Mutually Unbiased Bases.

A diagrammatic language for the Causaloid framework

The Causaloid framework is an operational approach aimed to house both the radical aspects of General Relativity -- dynamic causal structure, and Quantum Theory -- indefiniteness, to provide a scaffolding that might be suitable for Quantum Gravity by providing a landscape of theories that allow for indefinite causal structure. One may consider it as a generalisation of generalised probability theories (or GPTs) where a priori regions are not assumed to have any given causal relationship, to incorporate the possibility of indefinite causal structure. Since its conception, there have been many advances in the field of indefinite causal structure mostly stemming from the work of Chiribella et al. on the quantum switch and supermaps and from Oreshkov et al. on causal inequalities and process matrices. These approaches have systems moving along wires and use Hilbert space structure. They violate the standard causality constraints of Quantum Theory and, in this sense, can be regarded as post-quantum. The Causaloid approach does not necessarily have systems moving along wires or Hilbert spaces. This is the first paper in a trilogy of papers aiming to close the gap between the Causaloid (that allows for GPTs) and post-quantum studies that employ Hilbert spaces. To do so in the present paper, we provide a diagrammatic language for the Causaloid framework along with new terminology for the three levels of physical compression (called Tomographic, Compositional, and Meta compression).

Two instances of random access code in the quantum regime

We consider two classes of quantum generalisations of Random Access Code (RAC) and study lower bounds for probabilities of success for such tasks. It provides a useful framework for the study of certain information processing tasks with constrained resources. The first class is based on a random access code with quantum inputs and output known as No-Signalling Quantum RAC (NS-QRAC) [A. Grudka et al. Phys. Rev. A 92, 052312 (2015)], where unbounded entanglement and constrained classical communication are allowed, which can be seen as quantum teleportation with constrained classical communication, for which we provide a quantum lower bound. We consider two modifications to the NS-QRAC scenario, first where unbounded entanglement and constrained quantum communication is allowed and, second where bounded entanglement and unconstrained classical communication are allowed, where we find a monogamy relation for the transmission fidelities, which -- in contrast to the usual communication schemes -- involves multiple senders and a single receiver. We provide lower bounds for these scenarios. The second class is based on a random access code with a quantum channel and shared entanglement [A. Tavakoli et al. PRX Quantum 2 (4) 040357 (2021)]. We study the set of tasks where two inputs made of two digits of $d$-base are encoded over a qudit and a maximally entangled state, which can be seen as quantum dense coding with constrained quantum communication, for which we provide quantum lower bounds for $d=2,3,4$. The encoding employed utilises Gray codes.

Process Products Need Qualification

The quantum process framework is devised as a generalization of quantum theory to incorporate indefinite causal structure. In this short paper we point out a restriction in forming products of processes: there exist both classical and quantum processes whose tensor products are not processes. Our main result is a necessary and sufficient condition for when tensor products of multipartite processes are (in)valid. We briefly discuss the implications of this restriction on process communication theory.

A simple experiment demonstrating the connection between chaos and music

In this pedagogical paper we study the dripping pattern of a leaking faucet which we analyse on the basis of a musical procedure which we outline and match the power spectral density of these drops (which are recorded as noise signals over time) to verify the $\frac{1}{f^β}$ power law which characterizes the nature of such systems with non linear characteristics.

Remote Tomography Via von Neumann-Arthurs-Kelly Interaction

Teleportation usually involves entangled particles 1,2 shared by Alice and Bob, Bell-state measurement on particle 1 and system particle by Alice, classical communication to Bob, and unitary transformation by Bob on particle 2. We propose a novel method: interaction-based remote tomography. Alice arranges an entanglement generating von Neumann-Arthurs-Kelly interaction between the system and two apparatus particles, and then teleports the latter to Bob. Bob reconstructs the unknown initial state of the system not received by him by quadrature measurements on the apparatus particles .
