Invariant ultraviolet scale corrections to the thermodynamics of degenerate Fermi gas and its implications

We study the invariant Planck scale correction to the thermodynamics of the ideal Fermi gas. We have considered the modified dispersion relation and the cut-off to the maximum possible momentum/energy (Planck energy) of the non-interacting ideal degenerate Fermi gas particles. With such a modification the expression for the degenerate pressure and the total energy gets modified accordingly. We discuss the number density and mass dependence of the degenerate pressure. We found that the degenerate pressure is perturbative in the SR limit. We then take the example of white dwarfs to explore the possible implications. Using this modified degenerate pressure, we calculate the possible modification to the Chandrashekhar limit for white dwarfs using the Magueijo-Smolin (MS) modified dispersion relation. The mass-radius M-R plot shows that the modified/corrected radius of the white dwarf can be greater than, equal to and smaller than the usual special relativity (SR) value for particular masses. We found that the Chandrasekhar mass limit gets a positive correction. We note that the presence of observed white dwarfs having radius smaller than the SR Chandrasekhar limit may find an explanation if they are modeled using a modified dispersion relation. As the correction is perturbative in the SR limit, therefore this correction is solely because of the modified dispersion relation. The value of the obtained degenerate pressure for a given mass is found to be greater than, equal to and smaller than the usual special relativity (SR) value for particular masses as expected. We have also calculated the luminosity of the white dwarf by taking the model of partially degenerate gas and considering the modified radiative envelope equation. The luminosity also gets a negative correction. The correction to luminosity is nonperturbative as expected for such a theory.

Equilibrium properties of blackbody radiation with an ultraviolet energy cut-off

We study various equilibrium thermodynamic properties of blackbody radiation (i.e. a photon gas) with an ultraviolet energy cut-off. We find that the energy density, specific heat etc. follow usual acoustic phonon dynamics as have been well studied by Debye. Other thermodynamic quantities like pressure, entropy etc. have also been calculated. The usual Stefan-Boltzmann law gets modified. We observe that the values of the thermodynamic quantities with the energy cut-off is lower than the corresponding values in the theory without any such scale. The phase-space measure is also expected to get modified for an exotic spacetime appearing at Planck scale, which in turn leads to the modification of Planck energy density distribution and the Wien's displacement law. We found that the non-perturbative nature of the thermodynamic quantities in the SR limit (for both the case with ultravilolet cut-off and the modified measure case), due to nonanalyticity of the leading term, is a general feature of the theory accompanied with an ultraviolet energy cut-off. We have also discussed the possible modification in the case of Big Bang and the Stellar objects and have suggested a table top experiment for verification in effective low energy case.

Quantum Entropy for the Fuzzy Sphere and its Monopoles

Using generalized bosons, we construct the fuzzy sphere $S_F^2$ and monopoles on $S_F^2$ in a reducible representation of $SU(2)$. The corresponding quantum states are naturally obtained using the GNS-construction. We show that there is an emergent non-abelian unitary gauge symmetry which is in the commutant of the algebra of observables. The quantum states are necessarily mixed and have non-vanishing von Neumann entropy, which increases monotonically under a bistochastic Markov map. The maximum value of the entropy has a simple relation to the degeneracy of the irreps that constitute the reducible representation that underlies the fuzzy sphere.

Topics in Noncommutative Gauge Theories and Deformed Relativistic Theories

This is my PhD thesis. In this thesis we study the gauge theories on noncommutative Moyal space. We find new static solitons and instantons in terms of the so called generalized Bose operators. Generalized Bose operators are constructed to describe reducible representation of the oscillator algebra. They create/annihilate $k$-quanta, $k$ being a positive integer. We start with giving an alternative description to the already found static magnetic flux tube solutions of the noncommutative gauge theories in terms of generalized Bose operators. The Nielsen-Olesen vortex solutions found in terms of these operators reduce to the already found ones. On the contrary we find a class of new instaton solutions which are unitarily inequivalant to the the ones found from ADHM construction on noncommutative space. The charge of the instaton has a description in terms of the index representing the reducibility of the Fock space, i.e., $k$. After studying the static solitonic solutions in noncommutative Minkowski space and the instaton solutions in noncommutative Euclidean space we go on to study the implications of the time-space noncommutativity in Minkowski space. To understand it properly we study the time-dependent transitions of a forced harmonic oscillator in noncommutative 1+1 dimensional spacetime. We also try to understand the implications of the found results in the context of quantum optics. We then shift to the so called DSR theories which are related to a different kind of noncommutative ($κ$-Minkowski) space. DSR (Doubly/Deformed Special Relativity) aims to search for an alternate relativistic theory which keeps a length/energy scale (the Planck scale) and a velocity scale (the speed of light scale) invariant. We study thermodynamics of an ideal gas in such a scenario.

Thermodynamics of Ideal Gas in Doubly Special Relativity

We study thermodynamics of an ideal gas in Doubly Special Relativity. New type of special functions (which we call Incomplete Modified Bessel functions) emerge. We obtain a series solution for the partition function and derive thermodynamic quantities. We observe that DSR thermodynamics is non-perturbative in the SR and massless limits. A stiffer equation of state is found.

Time dependent transitions with time-space noncommutativity & its implications in Quantum Optics

We study the time dependent transitions of quantum forced harmonic oscillator (QFHO) in noncommutative $\mathds{R}^{1,1}$ perturbatively to linear order in the noncommutativity $θ$. We show that the Poisson distribution gets modified, and that the vacuum state evolves into a "squeezed" state rather than a coherent state. The time evolutions of uncertainties in position and momentum in vacuum are also studied and imply interesting consequences for modeling nonlinear phenomena in quantum optics.

Noncommutative Vortices and Instantons from Generalized Bose Operators

Generalized Bose operators correspond to reducible representations of the harmonic oscillator algebra. We demonstrate their relevance in the construction of topologically non-trivial solutions in noncommutative gauge theories, focusing our attention to flux tubes, vortices, and instantons. Our method provides a simple new relation between the topological charge and the number of times the basic irreducible representation occurs in the reducible representation underlying the generalized Bose operator. When used in conjunction with the noncommutative ADHM construction, we find that these new instantons are in general not unitarily equivalent to the ones currently known in literature.
