Uniformity of extremal graph-codes

It is an important fact that extremal discrete structures -- that is, discrete structures of maximal size among those that avoid certain configurations -- exhibit strong pseudorandom behavior. We present instances of this phenomenon in the context of \emph{graph-codes}, a notion put forth recently by Alon, as well as on problems related to the density polynomial Hales--Jewett conjecture.

Isometric rigidity and Fraïssé properties of Orlicz sequence spaces

We provide an approximate version of a rigidity result by Randrianantoanina: for a large class of Orlicz sequence spaces, almost isometric embeddings almost preserve disjointness. In specific cases, we can even prove that such embeddings almost preserve basic vectors. As a consequence, we prove that some Orlicz sequences spaces are guarded Fraïssé but not $ω$-categorical; moreover, they do not contain copies of $\ell_2$ and their age is not closed. This answers a question of Cúth-de Rancourt-Doucha.

The ergodicity of Orlicz sequence spaces

We prove that non-Hilbertian separable Orlicz sequence spaces are ergodic, i.e., the equivalence relation $\mathbb{E}_0$ Borel reduces to the isomorphism relation between subspaces of every such space. This is done by exhibiting non-Hilbertian asymptotically Hilbertian subspaces in those spaces, and appealing to a result by Anisca. In particular, each non-Hilbertian Orlicz sequence space contains continuum many pairwise non-isomorphic subspaces. As a consequence, we prove that the twisted Hilbert spaces $\ell_2(ϕ)$ constructed by Kalton and Peck are either Hilbertian, or ergodic. This applies in particular to the Kalton--Peck space $Z_2$ and all twisted Hilbert spaces generated by complex interpolation between Orlicz sequence spaces.

Continuous colorings on compact spaces

We study several natural classes of graphs on a zero-dimensional metrizable compact space having no continuous coloring. We compare these graphs with the quasi-order associated with injective continuous homomorphisms. We prove the existence of an antichain basis for these classes. We determine the size of such an antichain basis. We provide a concrete antichain basis when there is a countable one. We also provide some related quasi-orders and equivalence relations which are analytic complete as sets.

Oscillation stability by the Carlson-Simpson theorem

We prove oscillation stability for the Banach space $\ell_\infty$: every weak-* Borel, uniformily continuous map from the unit sphere of this space to a compact metric space can be made arbitrarily close to a constant map when restricted to the unit sphere of a suitable linear isometric subcopy of $\ell_\infty$. We also give a new proof of oscillation stability for the Urysohn sphere (a result by Nguyen Van Thé--Sauer): every uniformily continuous map from the Urysohn sphere to a compact metric space can be made arbitrarily close to a constant map when restricted to a suitable isometric subcopy of the Urysohn sphere. Both proofs are based on Carlson-Simpson's dual Ramsey theorem.

Guarded Fraïssé Banach spaces

We characterize separable Banach spaces having $G_δ$ isometry classes in the Polish codings $\mathcal{P}$, $\mathcal{P}_\infty$ and $\mathcal{B}$ introduced by Cúth-Doležal-Doucha-Kurka [13] as those being guarded Fraïssé, a weakening of the notion of Fraïssé Banach spaces defined by Ferenczi-Lopez-Abad-Mbombo-Todorcevic [18]. We prove a Fraïssé correspondence for those spaces and make links with the notion of $ω$-categoricity from continuous logic, showing that $ω$-categorical Banach spaces are a natural source of guarded Fraïssé Banach spaces. Using those results, we prove that for many values of $(p, q)$, the Banach space $L_p(L_q)$ has a $G_δ$ isometry class; we precisely characterize those values.

Big Ramsey Degrees and Infinite Languages

This paper investigates big Ramsey degrees of unrestricted relational structures in (possibly) infinite languages. Despite significant progress in the study of big Ramsey degrees, the big Ramsey degrees of many classes of structures with finite small Ramsey degrees are still not well understood. We show that if there are only finitely many relations of every arity greater than one, then unrestricted relational structures have finite big Ramsey degrees, and give some evidence that this is tight. This is the first time finiteness of big Ramsey degrees has been established for a random structure in an infinite language. Our results represent an important step towards a better understanding of big Ramsey degrees for structures with relations of arity greater than two.

Metric Spaces in Which Many Triangles Are Degenerate

Richmond and Richmond (American Mathematical Monthly 104 (1997), 713--719) proved the following theorem: If, in a metric space with at least five points, all triangles are degenerate, then the space is isometric to a subset of the real line. We prove that the hypothesis is unnecessarily strong: In a metric space on $n$ points, fewer than $7n^2/6$ suitably placed degenerate triangles suffice. However, fewer than $n(n-1)/2$ degenerate triangles, no matter how cleverly placed, never suffice.

Big Ramsey degrees in the metric setting

Oscillation stability is an important concept in Banach space theory which happens to be closely connected to discrete Ramsey theory. For example, Gowers proved oscillation stability for the Banach space $c_0$ using his now famous Ramsey theorem for $\mathrm{FIN}_k$ as the key ingredient. We develop the theory behind this connection and introduce the notion of compact big Ramsey degrees, extending the theory of (discrete) big Ramsey degrees. We then prove existence of compact big Ramsey degrees for the Banach space $\ell_\infty$ and the Urysohn sphere, with an explicit characterization in the case of $\ell_\infty$.

Continuity of coordinate functionals of filter bases in Banach spaces

We prove that the coordinate functionals associated with filter bases in Banach spaces are continuous as long as the underlying filter is analytic. This removes the large-cardinal hypothesis from the result established by the two last-named authors ([Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 53 (2021)]) at the expense of reducing the generality from projective to analytic. In particular, we obtain a ZFC solution to Kadets' problem of continuity of coordinate functionals associated with bases with respect to the filter of statistical convergence. Even though the automatic continuity of coordinate functionals beyond the projective class remains a mystery, we prove that a basis with respect to an arbitrary filter that has continuous coordinate functionals is also a basis with respect to a filter that is analytic.

Spectral-free methods in the theory of hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces

We give new and simple proofs of some classical properties of hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces, including the result by W. T. Gowers and B. Maurey that a hereditarily indecomposable Banach space cannot be isomorphic to a proper subspace of itself. These proofs do not make use of spectral theory and therefore, they work in real spaces as well as in complex spaces. We use our method to prove some new results. For example, we give a quantitative version of the latter result by Gowers and Maurey and deduce that Banach spaces that are isometric to all of their subspaces should have an unconditional basis with unconditional constant arbitrarily close to $1$. We also study the homotopy relation between into isomorphisms in hereditarily indecomposable spaces.

Ramsey theory without pigeonhole principle and the adversarial Ramsey principle

We develop a general framework for infinite-dimensional Ramsey theory with and without pigeonhole principle, inspired by Gowers' Ramsey-type theorem for block sequences in Banach spaces and by its exact version proved by Rosendal. In this framework, we prove the adversarial Ramsey principle for Borel sets, a result conjectured by Rosendal that generalizes at the same time his version of Gowers' theorem and Borel determinacy of games on integers.
