LegoNet: Memory Footprint Reduction Through Block Weight Clustering

As the need for neural network-based applications to become more accurate and powerful grows, so too does their size and memory footprint. With embedded devices, whose cache and RAM are limited, this growth hinders their ability to leverage state-of-the-art neural network architectures. In this work, we propose \textbf{LegoNet}, a compression technique that \textbf{constructs blocks of weights of the entire model regardless of layer type} and clusters these induced blocks. Using blocks instead of individual values to cluster the weights, we were able to compress ResNet-50 trained for Cifar-10 and ImageNet with only 32 4x4 blocks, compressing the memory footprint by over a factor of \textbf{64x without having to remove any weights} or changing the architecture and \textbf{no loss to accuracy}, nor retraining or any data, and show how to find an arrangement of 16 4x4 blocks that gives a compression ratio of \textbf{128x with less than 3\% accuracy loss}. This was all achieved with \textbf{no need for (re)training or fine-tuning}.

Developing a silica aerogel radiator for the HELIX ring-imaging Cherenkov system

This paper reports the successful fabrication of silica aerogel Cherenkov radiators produced in the first batches from a 96-tile mass production performed using pin-drying technique in our laboratory. The aerogels are to be used in a ring-imaging Cherenkov detector in the spectrometer of a planned balloon-borne cosmic-ray observation program, HELIX (High Energy Light Isotope eXperiment). A total of 36 transparent, hydrophobic aerogel tiles with a high refractive index of 1.16 and dimensions of 10 cm $\times $ 10 cm $\times $ 1 cm will be chosen as the flight radiators. Thus far, 40 out of the 48 tiles fabricated were confirmed as having no tile cracking. In the first screening, 8 out of the first 16 tiles were accepted as flight-qualified candidates, based on basic optical measurement results. To fit the aerogel tiles into a radiator support structure, the trimming of previously manufactured prototype tiles using a water-jet cutting device was successful.

Note on predictions for $c\bar{s}$ quarkonia using a three-loop static potential

We extend our treatment of the the spectroscopy and decays of the charm-strange quarkonium system to include the effect of using the full three-loop QCD correction to the static short distance potential. As before, our potential model consists of the relativistic kinetic energy term, a scalar linear confining term including its relativistic corrections and the perturbative QCD spin-dependent terms. A set of unperturbed wave functions for the various states is obtained using a variational technique that is further constrained by requiring that the wave functions also satisfy the relativistic virial theorem. These are then used in a perturbative treatment of the potential to fit the mass spectrum of the $c\bar{s}$ system and calculate the radiative decay widths. Our results accurately describe the $D_s$ spectrum and are compatible with the little data that is available for the radiative decays of the $D_s$ states.
