Quantum effects in the diffusion process to form a heavy nucleus in heavy-ion fusion reactions

We discuss quantum effects in the diffusion process which is used to describe the shape evolution from the touching configuration of fusing two nuclei to a compound nucleus. Applying the theory with quantum effects to the case where the potential field, the mass and friction parameters are adapted to realistic values of heavy-ion collisions, we show that the quantum effects play significant roles at low temperatures which are relevant to the synthesis of superheavy elements.

Quantum effect in the diffusion along a potential barrier: Comments on the synthesis of superheavy elements

We discuss a quantum effect in the diffusion process by developing a theory, which takes the finite curvature of the potential field into account. The transport coefficients of our theory satisfy the well-known fluctuation-dissipation theorem in the limit of Markovian approximation in the cases of diffusion in a flat potential and in a potential well. For the diffusion along a potential barrier, the diffusion coefficient can be related to the friction coefficient by an analytic continuation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem for the case of diffusion along a potential well in the asymptotic time, but contains strong non-Markovian effects at short times. By applying our theory to the case of realistic values of the temperature, the barrier curvature, and the friction coefficient, we show that the quantum effects will play significant roles in describing the synthesis of superheavy elements, i.e., the evolution from the fusion barrier to the conditional saddle, in terms of a diffusion process. We especially point out the importance of the memory effect, which increases at lower temperatures. It makes the net quantum effects enhance the probability of crossing the conditional saddle.

Influence of tunneling on electron screening in low energy nuclear reactions in laboratories

Using a semiclassical mean field theory, we show that the screening potential exhibits a characteristic radial variation in the tunneling region in sharp contrast to the assumption of the constant shift in all previous works. Also, we show that the explicit treatment of the tunneling region gives a larger screening energy than that in the conventional approach, which studies the time evolution only in the classical region and estimates the screening energy from the screening potential at the external classical turning point. This modification becomes important if the electronic state is not a single adiabatic state at the external turning point either by pre-tunneling transitions of the electronic state or by the symmetry of the system even if there is no essential change with the electronic state in the tunneling region.

Effects of the difference between the charge and matter deformations on fusion reactions of unstable nuclei

Relativistic mean field calculations suggest that the charge and matter deformations significantly differ in some of the unstable neutron and proton rich nuclei. We discuss the effects of the difference on the fusion reactions induced by them at energies near and below the Coulomb barrier by taking the $^{19,25,37}$Na + $^{208}$Pb reactions as examples. We also discuss whether one can probe the difference by the so called fusion barrier distribution analysis.

Diffusion processes with Non-Markovian Transport Coefficients

Employing time-dependent projection formalism, a Fokker-Planck equation with non-Markovian transport coefficients is derived for large amplitude collective motion. Properties of transport coefficients for diffusion processes in a potential well and along a potential barrier are discussed, and their connection with the fluctuation-dissipation theorem is investigated. In the case of diffusion in a potential well, the formalism naturally leads to the generalization of the well known Einstein relation by including quantum fluctuations in addition to thermal fluctuations. Furthermore, it is shown that at low temperatures diffusion along potential barrier is significantly modified by quantum fluctuations. Explicit expressions for transport coefficients are presented for the case of the Caldeira-Leggett model.

Potential renormalization by tunneling induced intrinsic transition

The screening effects by bound target electrons in low energy nuclear reactions in laboratory experiments can be well represented in terms of a constant shift of the tunneling potential barrier as postulated in all previous analyses if the electronic cloud were static or structureless and lied outside the tunneling region. In this paper, using a semiclassical mean field analysis of a simple two-level coupled-channels problem, we suggest that there could occur a strong quantum transition of electrons from excited to the ground states in the tunneling region, leading to a spatially dependent screening potential. We thus show the necessity of the dynamical treatment of the tunneling region in order to properly assess the screening effects by bound target electrons in low energy nuclear reactions in laboratories.

Applicability of the orientation average formula in heavy-ion fusion reactions of deformed nuclei

In heavy-ion fusion reactions involving a well deformed nucleus, one often assumes that the orientation of the target nucleus does not change during the reaction. We discuss the accuracy of this procedure by analyzing the excitation function of the fusion cross section and the fusion barrier distribution in the reactions of $^{154}$Sm target with various projectiles ranging from $^{12}$C to $^{40}$Ar. It is shown that the approximation gradually looses its accuracy with increasing charge product of the projectile and target nuclei because of the effects of finite excitation energy of the target nucleus. The relevance of such inaccuracy in analyzing the experimental data is also discussed.

Coulomb interaction between a spherical and a deformed nuclei

We present analytic expressions of the Coulomb interaction between a spherical and a deformed nuclei which are valid for all separation distance. We demonstrate their significant deviations from commonly used formulae in the region inside the Coulomb radius, and show that they remove various shortcomings of the conventional formulae.

Effects of $β_{6}$ deformation and low-lying vibrational bands on heavy-ion fusion reactions at sub-barrier energies

We study fusion reactions of $^{16}$O with $^{154}$Sm, $^{186}$W and $^{238}$U at sub-barrier energies by a coupled-channels framework. We focus especially on the effects of $β_{6}$ deformation and low-lying vibrational excitations of the target nucleus. It is shown that the inclusion of $β_{6}$ deformation leads to a considerable improvement of the fit to the experimental data for all of these reactions. For the $^{154}$Sm and $^{238}$U targets, the octupole vibration significantly affects the fusion barrier distribution. The effect of $β$ band is negligible in all the three reactions, while the $γ$ band causes a non-negligible effect on the barrier distribution at energies above the main fusion barrier. We compare the optimum values of the deformation parameters obtained by fitting the fusion data with those obtained from inelastic scatterings and the ground state mass calculations. We show that the channel coupling of high multipolarity beyond the quadrupole coupling is dominated by the nuclear coupling and hence higher order Coulomb coupling does not much influence the optimum values of $β_4$ and $β_6$ parameters. We also discuss the effect of two neutron transfer reactions on the fusion of $^{16}$O with $^{238}$U.
