Geomety of generic Moishezon twistor spaces on 4CP^2

In this paper we investigate a family of Moishezon twistor spaces on the connected sum of 4 complex projective planes, which can be regarded as a direct generalization of the twistor spaces on 3CP^2 of double solid type studied by Poon and Kreussler-Kurke. These twistor spaces have a natural structure of double covering over a scroll of 2-planes over a conic. We determine the defining equations of the branch divisors in an explicit form, which are very similar to the case of 3CP^2. Using these explicit description we compute the dimension of the moduli spaces of these twistor spaces. Also we observe that similarly to the case of 3CP^2, these twistor spaces can also be considered as generic Moishezon twistor spaces on 4CP^2. We obtain these results by analyzing the anticanonical map of the twistor spaces in detail, which enables us to give an explicit construction of the twistor spaces, up to small resolutions.

Degenerations of LeBrun twistor spaces

We investigate various limits of the twistor spaces associated to the self-dual metrics on n CP ^2, the connected sum of the complex projective planes, constructed by C. LeBrun. In particular, we explicitly present the following 3 kinds of degenerations whose limits of the metrics are: (a) LeBrun metrics on (n-1) CP ^2$, (b) (Another) LeBrun metrics on the total space of the line bundle O(-n) over CP ^1 (c) The hyper-Kaehler metrics on the small resolution of rational double points of type A_{n-1}, constructed by Gibbons and Hawking.

On pluri-half-anticanonical system of LeBrun twistor spaces

In this note, we investigate pluri-half-anticanonical systems on the so called LeBrun twistor spaces. We determine its dimension, the base locus, structure of the associated rational map, and also structure of general members, in precise form. In particular, we show that if n>2 and m>1, the base locus of the system |mK^{-1/2}| on nCP^2 consists of two non-singular rational curves, along which any member has singularity, and that if we blow-up these curves, then the strict transform of a general members of |mK^{-1/2}| becomes an irreducible non-singular surface. We also show that if n>3 and m>n-2, then the last surface is a minimal surface of general type with vanishing irregularity. We also show that the rational map associated to the system |mK^{-1/2}| is birational if and only if m> n-2.

Conformal symmetries of self-dual hyperbolic monopole metrics

We determine the group of conformal automorphisms of the self-dual metrics on n#CP^2 due to LeBrun for n>2, and Poon for n=2. These metrics arise from an ansatz involving a circle bundle over hyperbolic three-space H^3 minus a finite number of points, called monopole points. We show that for n>2 connected sums, any conformal automorphism is a lift of an isometry of H^3 which preserves the set of monopole points. Furthermore, we prove that for n = 2, such lifts form a subgroup of index 2 in the full automorphism group, which we show is a semi-direct product (U(1) \times U(1)) \times D_4, the dihedral group of order 8.

Minitwistor spaces, Severi varieties, and Einstein-Weyl structure

In this paper we show that the space of nodal rational curves, which is so called a Severi variety (of rational curves), on any non-singular projective surface is always equipped with a natural Einstein-Weyl structure, if the space is 3-dimensional. This is a generalization of the Einstein-Weyl structure on the space of smooth rational curves on a complex surface, given by N.Hitchin. As geometric objects naturally associated to Einstein-Weyl structure, we investigate null surfaces and geodesics on the Severi varieties. Also we see that if the projective surface has an appropriate real structure, then the real locus of the Severi variety becomes a positive definite Einstein-Weyl manifold. Moreover we construct various explicit examples of rational surfaces having 3-dimensional Severi varieties of rational curves.

A new series of compact minitwistor spaces and Moishezon twistor spaces over them

In recent papers math.DG/0701278 and arXiv:0705.0060, we gave explicit description of some new Moishezon twistor spaces. In this paper, developing the method in the papers much further, we explicitly give projective models of a number of new Moishezon twistor spaces, as conic bundles over some rational surfaces (called minitwistor spaces). These include the twistor spaces studied in the papers as very special cases. Our source of the result is a series of self-dual metrics with torus action constructed by D. Joyce. Actually, for arbitrary Joyce metrics and U(1)-subgroups of the torus which fixes a torus-invariant 2-sphere, we first determine the associated minitwistor spaces in explicit forms. Next by analyzing the meromorphic maps from the twistor spaces to the minitwistor spaces, we realize projective models of the twistor spaces of all Joyce metrics, as conic bundles over the minitwistor spaces. Then we prove that for any one of these minitwistor spaces, there exist Moishezon twistor spaces with only C*-action whose quotient space is the given minitwistor space. This result generates numerous Moishezon twistor spaces which cannot be found in the literature (including the author's papers), in quite explicit form.

Examples of compact minitwistor spaces and their moduli space

In a paper (math.DG/0403528) we obtained explicit examples of Moishezon twistor spaces of some compact self-dual four-manifolds admitting a non-trivial Killing field, and also determined their moduli space. In this note we investigate minitwistor spaces associated to these twistor spaces. We determine their structure, minitwistor lines and also their moduli space, by using a double covering structure of the twistor spaces. In particular, we find that these minitwistor spaces have different properties in many respects, compared to known examples of minitwistor spaces. Especially, we show that the moduli space of the minitwistor spaces is identified with the configuration space of different 4 points on a circle divided by the standard PSL(2, R)-action.

Projective models of the twistor spaces of Joyce metrics

We provide a simple algebraic construction of the twistor spaces of arbitrary Joyce's self-dual metrics on the 4-manifold H^2 x T^2 that extend smoothly to nCP^2, the connected sum of complex projective planes. Indeed, we explicitly realize projective models of the twistor spaces of arbitrary Joyce metrics on nCP^2 in a CP^4-bundle over CP^1, and show that they contain the twistor spaces of H^2 x T^2 as dense non-Zariski open subsets. In particular, we see that the last non-compact twistor spaces can be realized in rank-4 vector bundles over CP^1 by quite simple defining equations.

Double solid twistor spaces: the case of arbitrary signature

In a recent paper (math.DG/0701278) we constructed a series of new Moishezon twistor spaces which is a kind of variant of the famous LeBrun twistor spaces. In this paper we explicitly give projective models of another series of Moishezon twistor spaces on nCP^2 for arbitrary n>2, which can be regarded as a generalization of the twistor spaces of a 'double solid type' on 3CP^2 studied by Kreussler, Kurke, Poon and the author. Similarly to the twistor spaces of 'double solid type' on 3CP^2, projective models of present twistor spaces have a natural structure of double covering of a CP^2-bundle over CP^1. We explicitly give a defining polynomial of the branch divisor of the double covering whose restriction to fibers are degree four. If n>3 these are new twistor spaces, to the best of the author's knowledge. We also compute the dimension of the moduli space of these twistor spaces. Differently from math.DG/0701278, the present investigation is based on analysis of pluri-(half-)anticanonical systems of the twistor spaces.

Twistor lines on Nagata threefold

We give an explicit description of rational curves in the product of three copies of complex projective lines, which are transformed into twistor lines in M. Nagata's example of non-projective complete algebraic variety, viewed as the twistor space of Eguchi-Hanson metric. In particular, we show that there exist two families of such curves and both of them are parameterized by mutually diffeomorphic, connected real 4-dimensional manifolds. We also give a relationship between these two families through a birational transformation naturally associated to the Nagata's example.

Explicit construction of new Moishezon twistor spaces

In this paper we explicitly construct Moishezon twistor spaces on nCP^2 for arbitrary n>1 which admit a holomorphic C*-action. When n=2, they coincide with Y. Poon's twistor spaces. When n=3, they coincide with the one studied by the author in math.DG/0403528. When n>3, they are new twistor spaces, to the best of the author's knowledge. By investigating the anticanonical system, we show that our twistor spaces are bimeromorphic to conic bundles over certain rational surfaces. The latter surfaces can be regarded as orbit spaces of the C*-action on the twistor spaces. Namely they are minitwistor spaces. We explicitly determine their defining equations in CP^4. It turns out that the structure of the minitwistor space is independent of n. Further we concrelely construct a CP^2-bundle over the resolution of this surface, and provide an explicit defining equation of the conic bundles. It shows that the number of irreducible components of the discriminant locus for the conic bundles increases as n does. Thus our twistor spaces have a lot of similarities with the famous LeBrun twistor spaces, where the minitwistor space CP^1 x CP^1 in LeBrun's case is replaced by our minitwistor spaces found in math.DG/0508088.

Self-dual metrics and twenty-eight bitangents

We consider self-dual metrics on 3CP^2 of positive scalar curvature admitting a non-trivial Killing field, but which is not conformally isometric to LeBrun's metrics. Firstly, we determine defining equations of the twistor spaces of such self-dual metrics. Next we prove that conversely, the complex threefolds defined by the equations always become twistor spaces of self-dual metrics on 3CP^2 of the above kind. As a corollary, we determine a global structure of the moduli spaces of these self-dual metrics; namely we show that the moduli space is non-empty and isomorphic to R^3/G, where G is an involution of R^3 having one-dimensional fixed locus. Combined with works of LeBrun, this settles a moduli problem of self-dual metrics on 3CP^2 of positive scalar curvature admitting a non-trivial Killing field. In our proof, a key role is played by a classical result in algebraic geometry that a smooth plane quartic always possesses twenty-eight bitangents.

On a construction of the twistor spaces of Joyce metrics, II

We explicitly construct the twistor spaces of Joyce metrics with torus action that are not treated in Part I (math.DG/0603242). This finishes a construction of all the twistor spaces of Joyce metrics on the connected sum of four complex projective planes.

On a construction of the twistor spaces of Joyce metrics, I

In 1995 D. Joyce explicitly constructed a series of self-dual metrics with torus action on the connected sums of complex projective planes. In this paper we explicitly construct the twistor spaces of some of Joyce's self-dual metrics. Starting from a fiber space whose fibers are compact singular toric surfaces, we apply a number of birational transformations to obtain the required twistor spaces. In the construction an important role is played by flops, a useful operation in algebraic geometry.

Equivariant deformations of LeBrun's self-dual metrics with torus action

We investigate U(1)-equivariant deformations of C. LeBrun's self-dual metric with torus action. We explicitly determine all U(1)-subgroups of the torus for which one can obtain U(1)-equivariant deformation that do not preserve semi-free U(1)-action. This gives many new self-dual metrics with U(1)-action which are not conformally isometric to LeBrun metric. We also count the dimension of the moduli space of self-dual metrics with U(1)-action obtained in this way.

Geometry of lines on certain Moishezon threefolds. I. Explicit description of families of twistor lines

We study real lines on certain Moishezon threefolds which are potentially twistor spaces of 3CP^2. Here, line means a smooth rational curve whose normal bundle is O(1)^2 and the reality implies the invariance under an anti-holomorphic involution on the threefolds. Our threefolds are birational to double coverings of CP^3 branched along singular quartic surfaces. On these threefolds we find families of real lines in explicit form and prove that which families have to be chosen as twistor lines depend on how we take small resolutions of the double covering. This is a first step for determining the moduli space of self-dual metrics on 3CP^2 of positive scalar curvature, which admit a non-trivial Killing field.
