Origin of the colour-magnitude relation of elliptical galaxies

Evolutionary models of elliptical galaxies are constructed by using a new population synthesis code. Model parameters are calibrated to reproduce the observed colour-magnitude (CM) relation of Coma ellipticals in $V-K$ vs. $M_{V}$ diagram. The SEDs are degenerated in stellar age and metallicity. An attempt is performed to break this degeneracy, by simulating evolution of the CM relation of elliptical galaxies, based on the two alternative interpretations; i.e., the CM relation reflects different mean stellar age or various stellar metallicity. A confrontation with the CM diagrams of E/S0 galaxies in the two distant clusters Abell 2390 ($z=0.228$) and Abell 851 ($z=0.407$) reinsures previous contentions that the CM relation is primarily a metallicity effect. This conclusion does not depend either on the model parameters, or on the cosmological parameters adopted.

The Iron Discrepancy in Elliptical Galaxies after ASCA

We present estimates for the iron content of the stellar and diffused components of elliptical galaxies, as derived respectively from integrated optical spectra and from ASCA X-ray observations. A macroscopic discrepancy emerges between the expected iron abundances in the hot interstellar medium (ISM) and what is indicated by the X-ray observations, especially when allowance is made for the current iron enrichment by Type Ia supernovae. This strong discrepancy, that in some extreme instances may be as large as a factor of $\sim 20$, calls into question our current understanding of supernova enrichment and chemical evolution of galaxies. We discuss several astrophysical implications of the inferred low iron abundances in the ISM, including the chemical evolution of galaxies and cluster of galaxies, the evolution of gas flows in ellipticals, and the heating of the intracluster medium. Some of the consequences appear hard to accept, and in the attempt to avoid some of these difficulties we explore ways of hiding or diluting iron in the ISM of ellipticals. None of these possibilities appears astrophysically plausible, and we alternatively rise the question of the reliability of iron-L line diagonostic tools. Various thin plasma emission models are shown to give iron abundances that may differ significantly, especially at low temperatures ($kT \lsim 1$ keV). From a collection of ASCA and other X-ray observatory data, it is shown that current thin plasma codes tend to give very low iron abundances when the temperature of the objects is below $\sim 1$ keV. We conclude that -- besides rethinking the chemical evolution of galaxies -- one should also consider the possibility that existing thin plasma models may incorporate inaccurate atomic physics for the ions responsible for the iron-L complex.

The Molecular Front in Galaxies II : Galactic-scale Gas Phase Transition of HI and H2

We have examined the distribution of HI and H$_2$ gases in four face-on galaxies by using the observed dat a of CO and HI line emissions from the literatures. We demonstrate that the gas phase transition of HI and H$_2$ occurs suddenly within a narrow range of radi us, which we call the molecular front. We have tried to explain such phase transition in galactic scale with a help of the phase transition theory proposed by Elmegreen. The crucial parameters for determinating the molecular fraction $f_{\rm mol}$ are interstellar pressure $P $, UV radiation field $U$, and metallicity $Z$, and we have constructed a model galaxy in which $P$, $U$ a nd $Z$ obey an exponential function of the galacto-centric radius. The model shows that the molecular front must be a fundamental feature of galaxies which has an exponentia l disk, and that the metallicity gradient is most crucial for the formation of the molecular front. We have also tried to reproduce the observed molecular fraction $f_{\rm mol}$ by giving the set of ($P$, $ U$, $Z$) observationally, and show that the model can describe the variation of the molecular fraction $f_ {\rm mol}$ in galaxies quite well. We discuss the implication of the molecular front for the chemical evolution of galaxies.
