The transition operator of a random walk perturbated by sparse potentials

We consider an operator $P_V=(1+V)P$ on $\ell^2(Z^d)$, where $P$ is the transition operator of a symmetric irreducible random walk, and $V$ is a ``sparse'' potential. We first characterize the essential spectra of this operator. Secondly, we prove that all the eigenfunctions which correspond to discrete spectra decay exponentially fast. Thirdly, we give a sufficient condition for this operator to have an absolute spectral gap at the right edge of the spectra. Finally, as an application of the absolute spectral gap and the exponential decay of the eigenfunctions, we prove a limit theorem for the random walk under the Gibbs measure associated to the potential $V$.

Limiting results for the free energy of directed polymers in random environment with unbounded jumps

We study asymptotics of the free energy for the directed polymer in random environment. The polymer is allowed to make unbounded jumps and the environment is given by Bernoulli variables. We first establish the existence and continuity of the free energy including the negative infinity value of the coupling constant $β$. Our proof of existence at $β=-\infty$ differs from existing ones in that it avoids the direct use of subadditivity. Secondly, we identify the asymptotics of the free energy at $β=-\infty$ in the limit of the success probability of the Bernoulli variables tending to one. It is described by using the so-called time constant of a certain directed first passage percolation. Our proof relies on a certain continuity property of the time constant, which is of independent interest.

Localization Transition for Polymers in Poissonian Medium

We study a model of directed polymers in random environment in dimension $1+d$, given by a Brownian motion in a Poissonian potential. We study the effect of the density and the strength of inhomogeneities, respectively the intensity parameter $ν$ of the Poisson field and the temperature inverse $β$. Our results are: (i) fine information on the phase diagram, with quantitative estimates on the critical curve; (ii) pathwise localization at low temperature and/or large density; (iii) complete localization in a favourite corridor for large $νβ^2$ and bounded $β$.

Stochastic shear thickening fluids: Strong convergence of the Galerkin approximation and the energy equality

We consider a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) which describes the velocity field of a viscous, incompressible non-Newtonian fluid subject to a random force. Here, the extra stress tensor of the fluid is given by a polynomial of degree p-1 of the rate of strain tensor, while the colored noise is considered as a random force. We focus on the shear thickening case, more precisely, on the case $p\in [1+{\frac{d}{2}},{\frac{2d}{d-2}})$, where d is the dimension of the space. We prove that the Galerkin scheme approximates the velocity field in a strong sense. As a consequence, we establish the energy equality for the velocity field.

On exponential growth for a certain class of linear systems

We consider a class of stochastic growth models on the integer lattice which includes various interesting examples such as the number of open paths in oriented percolation and the binary contact path process. Under some mild assumptions, we show that the total mass of the process grows exponentially in time whenever it survives. More precisely, we prove that there exists an open path, oriented in time, along which the mass grows exponentially fast.

Stochastic power law fluids: Existence and uniqueness of weak solutions

We consider a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) which describes the velocity field of a viscous, incompressible non-Newtonian fluid subject to a random force. Here the extra stress tensor of the fluid is given by a polynomial of degree $p-1$ of the rate of strain tensor, while the colored noise is considered as a random force. We investigate the existence and the uniqueness of weak solutions to this SPDE.

A Note on the Diffusive Scaling Limit for a Class of Linear Systems

We consider a class of continuous-time stochastic growth models on $d$-dimensional lattice with non-negative real numbers as possible values per site. We remark that the diffusive scaling limit proven in our previous work [Nagahata, Y., Yoshida, N.: Central Limit Theorem for a Class of Linear Systems, Electron. J. Probab. Vol. 14, No. 34, 960--977. (2009)] can be extended to wider class of models so that it covers the cases of potlatch/smoothing processes.

Localization for Linear Stochastic Evolutions

We consider a discrete-time stochastic growth model on the $d$-dimensional lattice with non-negative real numbers as possible values per site. The growth model describes various interesting examples such as oriented site/bond percolation, directed polymers in random environment, time discretizations of the binary contact path process. We show the equivalence between the slow population growth and a localization property in terms of "replica overlap". The main novelty of this paper is that we obtain this equivalence even for models with positive probability of extinction at finite time. In the course of the proof, we characterize, in a general setting, the event on which an exponential martingale vanishes in the limit.

Branching Random Walks in Space-Time Random Environment: Survival Probability, Global and Local Growth Rates

We study the survival probability and the growth rate for branching random walks in random environment (BRWRE). The particles perform simple symmetric random walks on the $d$-dimensional integer lattice, while at each time unit, they split into independent copies according to time-space i.i.d. offspring distributions. The BRWRE is naturally associated with the directed polymers in random environment (DPRE), for which the quantity called the free energy is well studied. We discuss the survival probability (both global and local) for BRWRE and give a criterion for its positivity in terms of the free energy of the associated DPRE. We also show that the global growth rate for the number of particles in BRWRE is given by the free energy of the associated DPRE, though the local growth rateis given by the directional free energy.

Localization for a Class of Linear Systems

We consider a class of continuous-time stochastic growth models on $d$-dimensional lattice with non-negative real numbers as possible values per site. The class contains examples such as binary contact path process and potlatch process. We show the equivalence between the slow population growth and localization property that the time integral of the replica overlap diverges. We also prove, under reasonable assumptions, a localization property in a stronger form that the spatial distribution of the population does not decay uniformly in space.

Central Limit Theorem for a Class of Linear Systems

We consider a class of interacting particle systems with values in $[0,\8)^{\zd}$, of which the binary contact path process is an example. For $d \ge 3$ and under a certain square integrability condition on the total number of the particles, we prove a central limit theorem for the density of the particles, together with upper bounds for the density of the most populated site and the replica overlap.

Phase Transitions for the Groeth Rate of Linear Stochastic Evolutions

We consider a simple discrete-time Markov chain with values in $[0,\infty)^{Z^d}$. The Markov chain describes various interesting examples such as oriented percolation, directed polymers in random environment, time discretizations of binary contact path process and the voter model. We study the phase transition for the growth rate of the "total number of particles" in this framework. The main results are roughly as follows: If $d \ge 3$ and the Markov chain is "not too random", then, with positive probability, the growth rate of the total number of particles is of the same order as its expectation. If on the other hand, $d=1,2$, or the Markov chain is "random enough", then the growth rate is slower than its expectation. We also discuss the above phase transition for the dual processes and its connection to the structure of invariant measures for the Markov chain with proper normalization.

Central Limit Theorem for Branching Random Walks in Random Environment

We consider branching random walks in $d$-dimensional integer lattice with time-space i.i.d. offspring distributions. When $d \ge 3$ and the fluctuation of the environment is well moderated by the random walk, we prove a central limit theorem for the density of the population, together with upper bounds for the density of the most populated site and the replica overlap. We also discuss the phase transition of this model in connection with directed polymers in random environment.

Localization for Branching Random Walks in Random Environment

We consider branching random walks in $d$-dimensional integer lattice with time-space i.i.d. offspring distributions. This model is known to exhibit a phase transition: If $d \ge 3$ and the environment is "not too random", then, the total population grows as fast as its expectation with strictly positive probability. If,on the other hand, $d \le 2$, or the environment is ``random enough", then the total population grows strictly slower than its expectation almost surely. We show the equivalence between the slow population growth and a natural localization property in terms of "replica overlap". We also prove a certain stronger localization property, whenever the total population grows strictly slower than its expectation almost surely.

Directed Polymers in Random Environment are Diffusive at Weak Disorder

In this paper, we consider directed polymers in random environment with discrete space and time. For transverse dimension at least equal to 3, we prove that diffusivity holds for the path in the full weak disorder region, i.e., where the partition function differs from its annealed value only by a non-vanishing factor. Deep inside this region, we also show that the quenched averaged energy has fluctuations of order 1. In complete generality (arbitrary dimension and temperature), we prove monotonicity of the phase diagram in the temperature.

The spectral gap of the 2-D stochastic Ising model with mixed boundary conditions

We establish upper bounds for the spectral gap of the stochastic Ising model at low temperatures in an n-by-n box with boundary conditions which are not purely plus or minus; specifically, we assume the magnitude of the sum of the boundary spins over each interval of length n in the boundary is bounded by δn, where δ< 1. We show that for any such boundary condition, when the temperature is sufficiently low (depending on δ), the spectral gap decreases exponentially in n.
