Holographic moving mirrors

Moving mirrors have been known as tractable setups modeling Hawking radiation from black holes. In this paper, motivated by recent developments regarding the black hole information problem, we present extensive studies of moving mirrors in conformal field theories by employing both field theoretic as well as holographic methods. Reviewing first the usual field theoretic formulation of moving mirrors, we construct their gravity dual by resorting to the AdS/BCFT construction. Based on our holographic formulation, we then calculate the time evolution of entanglement entropy in various moving mirror models. In doing so, we mainly focus on three different setups: escaping mirror, which models constant Hawking radiation emanating from an eternal black hole; kink mirror, which models an evaporating black hole formed from collapse; and the double escaping mirror, which models two constantly radiating eternal black holes. In particular, by computing the holographic entanglement entropy, we show that the kink mirror gives rise to an ideal Page curve. We also find that an interesting phase transition arises in the case of the double escaping mirror. Furthermore, we argue and provide evidence for an interpretation of moving mirrors in terms of two dimensional Liouville gravity. We also discuss the connection between quantum energy conditions and the time evolution of holographic entanglement entropy in moving mirror models.

Aspects of Pseudo Entropy in Field Theories

In this article, we explore properties of pseudo entropy [1] in quantum field theories and spin systems from several approaches. Pseudo entropy is a generalization of entanglement entropy such that it depends on both an initial and final state and has a clear gravity dual via the AdS/CFT. We numerically analyze a class of free scalar field theories and the XY spin model. This reveals the basic properties of pseudo entropy in many-body systems, namely, the area law behavior, the saturation behavior, and the non-positivity of difference between the pseudo entropy and averaged entanglement entropy in the same quantum phase. In addition, our numerical analysis finds an example where the strong subadditivity of pseudo entropy gets violated. Interestingly we find that the non-positivity of the difference can be violated only if the initial and final states belong to different quantum phases. We also present analytical arguments which support these properties by both conformal field theoretic and holographic calculations. When the initial and final states belong to different topological phases, we expect a gapless mode localized along an interface, which enhances the pseudo entropy leading to the violation of the non-positivity of the difference. Moreover, we also compute the time evolution of pseudo entropy after a global quench, were we observe that the imaginary part of pseudo entropy shows interesting characteristc behavior.

Pseudo Entropy in Free Quantum Field Theories

Pseudo entropy is an interesting quantity with a simple gravity dual, which generalizes entanglement entropy such that it depends on both an initial and a final state. Here we reveal the basic properties of pseudo entropy in quantum field theories by numerically calculating this quantity for a set of two-dimensional free scalar field theories and the Ising spin chain. We extend the Gaussian method for pseudo entropy in free scalar theories with two parameters: mass $m$ and dynamical exponent $z$. This computation finds two novel properties of Pseudo entropy which we conjecture to be universal in field theories, in addition to an area law behavior. One is a saturation behavior and the other one is non-positivity of the difference between pseudo entropy and averaged entanglement entropy. Moreover, our numerical results for the Ising chain imply that pseudo entropy can play a role as a new quantum order parameter which detects whether two states are in the same quantum phase or not.

Entanglement entropy in holographic moving mirror and Page curve

We calculate the time evolution of entanglement entropy in two dimensional conformal field theory with a moving mirror. For a setup modeling Hawking radiation, we obtain a linear growth of entanglement entropy and show that this can be interpreted as the production of entangled pairs. For a setup, which mimics black hole formation and evaporation, we find that the evolution follows the ideal Page curve. We perform these computations by constructing the gravity dual of the moving mirror model via holography. We also argue that our holographic setup provides a concrete model to derive the Page curve for black hole radiation in the strong coupling regime of gravity.

Direct Calculation of Mutual Information of Distant Regions

We consider the (Renyi) mutual information, $I^{(n)}(A,B) = S^{(n)}_A+S^{(n)}_{B} - S^{(n)}_{A \cup B}$, of distant compact spatial regions A and B in the vacuum state of a free scalar field. The distance r between A and B is much greater than their sizes $R_{A,B}$. It is known that $I^{(n)}(A,B) \sim C^{(n)}_{AB} \left<0| ϕ(r)ϕ(0) |0\right>^2$ . We obtain the direct expression of $C^{(n)}_{AB}$ for arbitrary regions A and B. We perform the analytical continuation of $n$ and obtain the mutual information. The direct expression is useful for the numerical computation. By using the direct expression, we can compute directly $I(A,B)$ without computing $S_A, S_B$ and $S_{A \cup B}$ respectively, so it reduces significantly the amount of computation.

Entanglement Entropy and Decoupling in the Universe

In the expanding universe, two interacting fields are no longer in thermal contact when the interaction rate becomes smaller than the Hubble expansion rate. After decoupling, two subsystems are usually treated separately in accordance with equilibrium thermodynamics and the thermodynamic entropy gives a fiducial quantity conserved in each subsystem. In this paper, we discuss a correction to this paradigm from quantum entanglement of two coupled fields. The thermodynamic entropy is generalized to the entanglement entropy. We formulate a perturbation theory to derive the entanglement entropy and present Feynman rules in diagrammatic calculations. For specific models to illustrate our formulation, an interacting scalar-scalar system, quantum electrodynamics, and the Yukawa theory are considered. We calculate the entanglement entropy in these models and find a quantum correction to the thermodynamic entropy. The correction is revealed to be important in circumstances of instantaneous decoupling.

The Aharonov-Bohm Effect on Entanglement Entropy in Conformal Field Theory

We consider the Aharonov-Bohm effect on entanglement entropy for one interval in (1+1) dimensional conformal field theory on a one dimensional ring. The magnetic field is confined inside the ring, i.e. there is a Wilson loop on the ring. The Aharonov-Bohm phase factor which is proportional to the Wilson loop is represented as insertion of twist operators. We compute exactly the Renyi entropy from a four point function of twist operators in a free charged scalar field.

EPR Pairs, Local Projections and Quantum Teleportation in Holography

In this paper we analyze three quantum operations in two dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs): local projection measurements, creations of partial entanglement between two CFTs, and swapping of subsystems between two CFTs. We also give their holographic duals and study time evolutions of entanglement entropy. By combining these operations, we present an analogue of quantum teleportation between two CFTs and give its holographic realization. We introduce a new quantity to probe tripartite entanglement by using local projection measurement.

Double-Trace Deformations and Entanglement Entropy in AdS

We compute the bulk entanglement entropy of a massive scalar field in a Poincare AdS with the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary condition when we trace out a half space. Moreover, by taking into account the quantum back reaction to the minimal surface area, we calculate how much the entanglement entropy changes under a double-trace deformation of a holographic CFT. In the AdS3/CFT2 setup, our result agrees with the known result in 2d CFTs. In higher dimensions, our results offer holographic predictions.

Gravity Dual of Quantum Information Metric

We study a quantum information metric (or fidelity susceptibility) in conformal field theories with respect to a small perturbation by a primary operator. We argue that its gravity dual is approximately given by a volume of maximal time slice in an AdS spacetime when the perturbation is exactly marginal. We confirm our claim in several examples.

Entanglement Entropy of Disjoint Regions in Excited States : An Operator Method

We develop the computational method of entanglement entropy based on the idea that $Trρ_Ω^n$ is written as the expectation value of the local operator, where $ρ_Ω$ is a density matrix of the subsystem $Ω$. We apply it to consider the mutual Renyi information $I^{(n)}(A,B)=S^{(n)}_A+S^{(n)}_B-S^{(n)}_{A\cup B}$ of disjoint compact spatial regions $A$ and $B$ in the locally excited states defined by acting the local operators at $A$ and $B$ on the vacuum of a $(d+1)$-dimensional field theory, in the limit when the separation $r$ between $A$ and $B$ is much greater than their sizes $R_{A,B}$. For the general QFT which has a mass gap, we compute $I^{(n)}(A,B)$ explicitly and find that this result is interpreted in terms of an entangled state in quantum mechanics. For a free massless scalar field, we show that for some classes of excited states, $I^{(n)}(A,B)-I^{(n)}(A,B)|_{r \rightarrow \infty} =C^{(n)}_{AB}/r^{α(d-1)}$ where $α=1$ or 2 which is determined by the property of the local operators under the transformation $ϕ\rightarrow -ϕ$ and $α=2$ for the vacuum state. We give a method to compute $C^{(2)}_{AB}$ systematically.

cMERA as Surface/State Correspondence in AdS/CFT

We present how the surface/state correspondence, conjectured in arXiv:1503.03542, works in the setup of AdS3/CFT2 by generalizing the formulation of cMERA. The boundary states in conformal field theories play a crucial role in our formulation and the bulk diffeomorphism is naturally taken into account. We give an identification of bulk local operators which reproduces correct scalar field solutions on AdS3 and bulk scalar propagators. We also calculate the information metric for a locally excited state and show that it is given by that of 2d hyperbolic manifold, which is argued to describe the time slice of AdS3.

On the definition of entanglement entropy in lattice gauge theories

We focus on the issue of proper definition of entanglement entropy in lattice gauge theories, and examine a naive definition where gauge invariant states are viewed as elements of an extended Hilbert space which contains gauge non-invariant states as well. Working in the extended Hilbert space, we can define entanglement entropy associated with an arbitrary subset of links, not only for abelian but also for non-abelian theories. We then derive the associated replica formula. We also discuss the issue of gauge invariance of the entanglement entropy. In the $Z_N$ gauge theories in arbitrary space dimensions, we show that all the standard properties of the entanglement entropy, e.g. the strong subadditivity, hold in our definition. We study the entanglement entropy for special states, including the topological states for the $Z_N$ gauge theories in arbitrary dimensions. We discuss relations of our definition to other proposals.

Entanglement between Two Interacting CFTs and Generalized Holographic Entanglement Entropy

In this paper we discuss behaviors of entanglement entropy between two interacting CFTs and its holographic interpretation using the AdS/CFT correspondence. We explicitly perform analytical calculations of entanglement entropy between two free scalar field theories which are interacting with each other in both static and time-dependent ways. We also conjecture a holographic calculation of entanglement entropy between two interacting $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theories by introducing a minimal surface in the S$^5$ direction, instead of the AdS$_5$ direction. This offers a possible generalization of holographic entanglement entropy.

Volume Law for the Entanglement Entropy in Non-local QFTs

In this paper, we present a simple class of non-local field theories whose ground state entanglement entropy follows a volume law as long as the size of subsystem is smaller than a certain scale. We will confirm this volume law both from numerical calculations and from analytical estimation. This behavior fits nicely with holographic results for spacetimes whose curvatures are much smaller than AdS spaces such as those in the flat spacetime.

Superluminal Propagation Caused by Radiative Corrections in a Uniform Electromagnetic Field

We consider the effect of radiative corrections on the maximum velocity of propagation of neutral scalar fields in a uniform electromagnetic field. The propagator of neutral scalar fields interacting with charged fields depends on the electromagnetic field through charged particle loops. The kinetic terms of the scalar fields are corrected and the maximum velocity of the scalar particle becomes greater or less than unity. We show that the maximum velocity becomes greater than unity in a simple example, a neutral scalar field coupled with two charged Dirac fields by Yukawa interaction. The maximum velocity depends on the frame of reference and causality is not violated. We discuss the possibility of this superluminal propagation in the Standard Model.

Entanglement Entropy of Two Spheres

We study the entanglement entropy S_{AB} of a massless free scalar field on two spheres A and B whose radii are R_1 and R_2, respectively, and the distance between the centers of them is r. The state of the massless free scalar field is the vacuum state. We obtain the result that the mutual information S_{A;B}:=S_A+S_B-S_{AB} is independent of the ultraviolet cutoff and proportional to the product of the areas of the two spheres when r>>R_1,R_2, where S_A and S_B are the entanglement entropy on the inside region of A and B, respectively. We discuss possible connections of this result with the physics of black holes.

Entanglement Entropy of Two Black Holes and Entanglement Entropic Force

We study the entanglement entropy, $S_C$, of a massless free scalar field on the outside region $C$ of two black holes $A$ and $B$ whose radii are $R_1$ and $R_2$ and how it depends on the distance, $r(\gg R_1,R_2)$, between two black holes. If we can consider the entanglement entropy as thermodynamic entropy, we can see the entropic force acting on the two black holes from the $r$ dependence of $S_C$. We develop the computational method based on that of Bombelli et al to obtain the $r$ dependence of $S_C$ of scalar fields whose Lagrangian is quadratic with respect to the scalar fields. First we study $S_C$ in $d+1$ dimensional Minkowski spacetime. In this case the state of the massless free scalar field is the Minkowski vacuum state and we replace two black holes by two imaginary spheres, and we take the trace over the degrees of freedom residing in the imaginary spheres. We obtain the leading term of $S_C$ with respect to $1/r$. The result is $S_C=S_A+S_B+\tfrac{1}{r^{2d-2}} G(R_1,R_2)$, where $S_A$ and $S_B$ are the entanglement entropy on the inside region of $A$ and $B$, and $G(R_1,R_2) \leq 0$. We do not calculate $G(R_1,R_2)$ in detail, but we show how to calculate it. In the black hole case we use the method used in the Minkowski spacetime case with some modifications. We show that $S_C$ can be expected to be the same form as that in the Minkowski spacetime case. But in the black hole case, $S_A$ and $S_B$ depend on $r$, so we do not fully obtain the $r$ dependence of $S_C$. Finally we assume that the entanglement entropy can be regarded as thermodynamic entropy, and consider the entropic force acting on two black holes. We argue how to separate the entanglement entropic force from other force and how to cancel $S_A$ and $S_B$ whose $r$ dependence are not obtained. Then we obtain the physical prediction which can be tested experimentally in principle.
