Equation of State of Structured Matter at Finite Temperature

We investigate the properties of nuclear matter at the first-order phase transitions such as liquid-gas phase transition and hadron-quark phase transition. As a general feature of the first-order phase transitions of matter consisting of many species of charged particles, there appears a mixed phases with geometrical structures called ``pasta'' due to the balance of the Coulomb repulsion and the surface tension between two phases. The equation of state (EOS) of mixed phase is different from the one obtained by a bulk application of the Gibbs conditions or by the Maxwell construction due to the effects of the non-uniform structure. We show that the charge screening and strong surface tension make the EOS close to that of the Maxwell construction. The thermal effects are elucidated as well as the above finite-size effects.

Hot hadron-quark mixed phase including hyperons

We study the hadron-quark phase transition with the finite size effects at finite temperature. For the hadron phase, we adopt a realistic equation of state in the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory including hyperons. The properties of the mixed phase are clarified by considering the finite size effects under the Gibbs conditions. We find that the equation of state becomes softer than that at zero-temperature for some density region. We also find that the equation of state gets closer to that given by the Maxwell construction. Moreover, the number of hyperons is suppressed by the presence of quarks. These are characteristic features of the hadron-quark mixed phase, and should be important for many astrophysical phenomena such as mergers of binary neutron stars.

The pasta structure in the hadron-quark phase transition and the effects on magnetized compact stars

We report the effects of quark-hadron phase transition on the structures of general relativistic stars with purely toroidal magnetic field. For the mixed phase, we take into account of the finite-size effects, which lead to non-uniform "Pasta" structures. Our study is based on axisymetric and stationary formalism including purely toroidal magnetic field. For hybrid stars, we find the characteristic distribution of magnetic field, which has a discontinuity originated in the quark-hadron mixed phase. These distributions of magnetic field will change astrophysical phenomena, such as cooling processes.

Relativistic hybrid stars with super-strong toroidal magnetic fields: An evolutionary track with QCD phase transition

We investigate structures of hybrid stars, which feature quark core surrounded by a hadronic matter mantle, with super-strong toroidal magnetic fields in full general relativity. Modeling the equation of state (EOS) with a first order transition by bridging the MIT bag model for the description of quark matter and the nuclear EOS by Shen et al., we numerically construct thousands of the equilibrium configurations to study the effects of the phase transition. It is found that the appearance of the quark phase can affect distributions of the magnetic fields inside the hybrid stars, making the maximum field strength about up to 30 % larger than for the normal neutron stars. Using the equilibrium configurations, we explore the possible evolutionary paths to the formation of hybrid stars due to the spin-down of magnetized rotating neutron stars. We find that the energy release by the phase transition to the hybrid stars is quite large ($\la 10^{52} \rm erg$) even for super strongly magnetized compact stars. Our results suggest that the strong gravitational-wave emission and the sudden spin-up signature could be observable signals of the QCD phase transition, possibly for a source out to Megaparsec distances.

General relativistic compact stars with exotic matter

We study structures of general relativistic compact stars with exotic matter. Our study is based on axisymetric and stationary formalism including purely toroidal magnetic field. We also study the finite size effects of quark-hadron mixed phase on structures of magnetars. For hybrid stars, we find a characteristic distribution of magnetic field, which has a discontinuity originated in the quark-hadron mixed phase. These distributions of magnetic field will change astrophysical phenomena, such as cooling processes.

Lepton effects on the proto-neutron stars with the hadron-quark mixed phase in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

We study the structures of hybrid stars with leptons at finite temperature under beta equilibrium. For the quark phase, we use the three flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. For the hadron phase, we adopt nuclear equation of state (EOS) by Shen et al.. This EOS is in the framework of the relativistic mean field theory including the tree body effects. For the hadron-quark phase transition, we impose the bulk Gibbs construction or the Maxwell construction to take into account uncertainties by {\it finite size effects}. We find that the pure quark phase does not appear in stable star cores in all cases. With the phase transition, the maximum masses increase $\sim 10 %$ for high lepton fraction. On the contrary, without the transition, they decrease $\sim 10 %$. We also find that, in the NJL model, the lepton fraction is more important for structures of unstable stars than the temperature. This result is important for many astrophysical phenomena such as the core collapse of massive stars.

Effects of QCD phase transition on gravitational radiation from two-dimensional collapse and bounce of massive stars

We perform two-dimensional, magnetohydrodynamical core-collapse simulations of massive stars accompanying the QCD phase transition. We study how the phase transition affects the gravitational waveforms near the epoch of core-bounce. As for initial models, we change the strength of rotation and magnetic fields. Particularly, the degree of differential rotation in the iron core (Fe-core) is changed parametrically. As for the microphysics, we adopt a phenomenological equation of state above the nuclear density, including two parameters to change the hardness before the transition. We assume the first order phase transition, where the conversion of bulk nuclear matter to a chirally symmetric quark-gluon phase is described by the MIT bag model. Based on these computations, we find that the phase transition can make the maximum amplitudes larger up to $\sim$ 10 percents than the ones without the phase transition. On the other hand, the maximum amplitudes become smaller up to $\sim$ 10 percents owing to the phase transition, when the degree of the differential rotation becomes larger. We find that even extremely strong magnetic fields $\sim 10^{17}$ G in the protoneutron star do not affect these results.

Possible evolutionary transition from rapidly rotating neutron stars to strange stars due to spin-down

We present a scenario of formation of strange stars due to spin-down of {\it rapidly rotating} neutron stars left after supernova explosions . By assuming a process where the total baryon mass is conserved but the angular momentum is lost due to emission of gravitational waves and/or the magnetic braking, we find that the transition from rapidly rotating neutron stars to slowly rotating strange stars is possible; a large amount of energy $\sim 10^{53} ergs $ could be released. The liberated energy might become a new energy source for a delayed explosion of supernova. Furthermore, our scenario suggests that the supernova associated with gamma-ray bursts could become candidates for targets in the future observation of gravitational waves.
