Possibility of field-induced incommensurate order in quasi-one-dimensional frustrated spin system

We study an incommensurate long-range order induced by an external magnetic field in a quasi-one-dimensional bond-alternating spin system, F5PNN, focusing on the role of the frustrating interaction which can be enhanced by a high-pressure effect. On the basis of the density matrix renormalization group analysis of a microscopic model for F5PNN, we present several H-T phase diagrams for typical parameters of the frustrating next-nearest-neighbour coupling and the interchain interaction, and then discuss how the field-induced incommensurate order develops by the frustration effect in such phase diagrams. A magnetization plateau at half the saturation moment is also mentioned.

Photoinduced metallic properties of one-dimensional strongly correlated electron systems

We study photoinduced optical responses of one-dimensional strongly correlated electron systems. The optical conductivity spectra are calculated for the ground state and a photoexcited state in the one-dimensional Hubbard model at half filling by using the exact diagonalization method. It is found that, in the Mott insulator phase, the photoexcited state has large spectral weights including the Drude weight below the optical gap. As a consequence, the spectral weight above the optical gap is largely reduced. These results imply that a metallic state is induced by photoexcitation. Comparison between the photoexcited and hole-doped states shows that the photoexcitation is similar to chemical doping.

Frustration-induced eta inversion in the S=1/2 bond-alternating spin chain

We study the frustration-induced enhancement of the incommensurate correlation for a bond-alternating quantum spin chain in a magnetic field, which is associated with a quasi-one-dimensional organic compound F5PNN. We investigate the temperature dependence of the staggered susceptibilities by using the density matrix renormalization group, and then find that the incommensurate correlation becomes dominant in a certain range of the magnetic field. We also discuss the mechanism of this enhancement on the basis of the mapping to the effective S=1/2 XXZ chain and a possibility of the field-induced incommensurate long range order.

Tensor Product State Formulation for the Spin 1/2 Antiferromagnetic XXZ Model on the Checkerboard Lattice

Vertical density matrix algorithm (VDMA), a tensor product state formulation of the ``higher-dimensional'' density matrix renormalization group, is applied to the spin 1/2 antiferromagnetic XXZ model on the checkerboard lattice. The VDMA was, in the preceding study, applied to the transverse field Ising model on the square lattice and the three-dimensional classical Ising model. In the present paper, its implementation procedure is modified in order to apply the VDMA to the XXZ model. Numerical accuracy of the VDMA is investigated for the XXZ model on the square lattice, which shows that the method gives reliable results for the ground state energy. In the frustrated region, VDMA results are compared with a simple calculation based on a magnetically disordered state. It is found that the weakly frustrated region is in the Néel ordered phase, while in the strongly frustrated region the realized phase cannot be identified clearly by the obtained results.

Stable Optimization of a Tensor Product Variational State

We consider a variational problem for three-dimensional (3D) classical lattice models. We construct the trial state as a two-dimensional product of local variational weights that contain auxiliary variables. We propose a stable numerical algorithm for the maximization of the variational partition function per layer. The numerical stability and efficiency of the new method are examined through its application to the 3D Ising model.

Spinon excitation and Möbius boundary condition in S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin ladder with zigzag structure

We investigate the low-lying excitation of the antiferromagnetic zigzag spin ladder with Möbius boundary condition. Using the Lanczos and Householder diagonalization methods, we calculate the excitation spectrum of the zigzag ladder in the momentum space. We then show that the topological defect generated by the Möbius boundary provides the clear evidence of the single spinon excitation. On the basis of the obtained single-spinon dispersion curve, we analyze the two-spinon scattering states under the usual periodic boundary condition. We further discuss the interaction effect between the spinons, and the connection to the cusp singularity in the magnetization process.

Vertical Density Matrix Algorithm: A Higher-Dimensional Numerical Renormalization Scheme based on the Tensor Product State Ansatz

We present a new algorithm to calculate the thermodynamic quantities of three-dimensional (3D) classical statistical systems, based on the ideas of the tensor product state and the density matrix renormalization group. We represent the maximum-eigenvalue eigenstate of the transfer matrix as the product of local tensors which are iteratively optimized by the use of the ``vertical density matrix'' formed by cutting the system along the transfer direction. This algorithm, which we call vertical density matrix algorithm (VDMA), is successfully applied to the 3D Ising model. Using the Suzuki-Trotter transformation, we can also apply the VDMA to two-dimensional (2D) quantum systems, which we demonstrate for the 2D transverse field Ising model.

Two-Dimensional Tensor Product Variational Formulation

We propose a numerical self-consistent method for 3D classical lattice models, which optimizes the variational state written as two-dimensional product of tensors. The variational partition function is calculated by the corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG), which is a variant of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). Numerical efficiency of the method is observed via its application to the 3D Ising model.

Antiferromagnetic Zigzag Spin Chain in Magnetic Fields at Finite Temperatures

We study thermodynamic behaviors of the antiferromagnetic zigzag spin chain in magnetic fields, using the density-matrix renormalization group method for the quantum transfer matrix. We focus on the thermodynamics of the system near the critical fields in the ground-state magnetization process($M$-$H$ curve): the saturation field, the lower critical field associated with excitation gap, and the field at the middle-field cusp singularity. We calculate magnetization, susceptibility and specific heat of the zigzag chain in magnetic fields at finite temperatures, and then discuss how the calculated quantities reflect the low-lying excitations of the system related with the critical behaviors in the $M$-$H$ curve.
