Unraveling materials Berry curvature and Chern-Simons numbers from real-time evolution of Bloch states

Materials can be classified by the topological character of their electronic structure and, in this perspective, global attributes immune to local deformations have been discussed in terms of Berry curvature and Chern numbers. Except for instructional simple models, linear response theories have been ubiquitously employed in calculations of topological properties of real materials. Here we propose a completely different and versatile approach to get the topological characteristics of materials by calculating physical observables from the real-time evolving Bloch states: the cell-averaged current density reveals the anomalous velocities whose integration leads to the conductivity quantum. Results for prototypical cases are shown, including a spin-frozen valley-Hall and a quantum anomalous Hall insulator. The advantage of this method is best illustrated by the example of a quantum spin Hall insulator: the quantized spin Hall conductivity is straightforwardly obtained irrespective of the non-Abelian nature in its Berry curvature. Moreover, the method can be extended to the description of real observables in non-equilibrium states of topological materials.

Interplay between superconductivity and magnetism in one-unit-cell LaAlO3 capped with SrTiO3

To form a conducting layer at the interface between the oxide insulators LaAlO3 and SrTiO3, the LaAlO3 layer on the SrTiO3 substrate must be at least four unit-cells-thick. The LaAlO3 SrTiO3 heterointerface thus formed exhibits various intriguing phenomena such as ferromagnetism and superconductivity. It has been widely studied for being a low-dimensional ferromagnetic oxide superconducting system with a strong gate-tunable spin-orbit interaction. However, its lack of stability and environmental susceptiveness have been an obstacle to its further experimental investigations and applications. Here, we demonstrate that capping the bilayer with SrTiO3 relieves this thickness limit, while enhancing the stability and controllability of the interface. In addition, the SrTiO3-capped LaAlO3 exhibits unconventional superconductivity; the critical current dramatically increases under a parallel magnetic field, and shows a reversed hysteresis contrary to the conventional hysteresis of magnetoresistance. Its superconducting energy gap of $Δ\sim 1.31k_BT_c$ also deviates from conventional BCS-type superconductivity. The oxide trilayer could be a robust platform for studying the extraordinary interplay of superconductivity and ferromagnetism at the interface electron system between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3.

Phonon-derived ultrafast relaxation of spin-valley polarized states in MoS_{2}

The valley degree of freedom and the possibility of spin-valley coupling of solid materials have attracted growing interest, and the relaxation dynamics of spin- and valley-polarized states has become an important focus of recent studies. In spin-orbit-coupled inversion-asymmetric two-dimensional materials, such as MoS_{2} it has been found that the spin randomization is characteristically faster than the time scales for inter- and intra-valley scatterings. In this study, we examined the ultrafast non-collinear spin dynamics of an electron valley in monolayer MoS_{2} by using real-time propagation time-dependent density functional theory. We found that the spin precession of an electron in the valley is sharply coupled with the lowest-lying optical phonon that release the in-plane mirror symmetry. This indicates that the spin randomization of MoS_{2} is mainly caused by spin-phonon interaction. We further suggest that flipping of spins in a spin-orbit-coupled system can be achieved by the control over phonons.

Magnetization reversal of giant perpendicular magnetic anisotropy at the magnetic-phase transition in FeRh films on MgO

Phenomena originated from spin-orbit interaction, such as magnetic anisotropy (MA), Rashba-type interactions, or topological insulators, have drawn huge attention for its intriguing physics. In particular, the search for a novel antiferromagnetic material, with potentially large perpendicular MA (PMA), has been becoming very intensive for next-generation high density memory applications. Here, we propose that substitutions of transition metals Ru and Ir, neighboring and same group elements in the periodic table, for the Rh site in the vicinity of surface can induce a substantially large PMA, up to an order of magnitude of 20 erg/cm2, in FeRh films on MgO. The main driving mechanism for this huge PMA is the interplay between the dxy and dx2-y2 states of strong spin-orbit 4d and 5d orbitals. Further investigations demonstrate that magnetization direction of PMA undergoes a transition into an in-plane magnetization at the antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition, which provides a viable route for achieving large and switchable PMA associated with the magnetic-phase transition in antiferromagnetic spintronics.

La displacement driven Double-exchange like mediation in Titanium $d_{xy}$ ferromagnetism at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$

The epitaxial atomistic interfaces of two insulating oxides, LaAlO$_3$ (LAO)/SrTiO$_3$ (STO), have attracted great interest owing to rich emergent phenomena \cite{hwang12:nmat,coey13:mrs,ohtomo04:} such as interface metallicity \cite{ohtomo04:,nakagawa06:}, thickness dependent insulator-metal transition \cite{huijben06:nmat}, superconductivity \cite{N.Reyren08312007}, ferromagnetism \cite{brinkman.07:natmat}, and even their coexistence \cite{bert11:nphys,li11:nphys,dikin11:prl}. However, the physics origin of ferromagnetic ordering in the $n$-type LAO/STO interface is in debate. Here we propose that the polar distortion of La atom can ignite the ferromagnetism at the interface even without oxygen vacancy. The induced hybridization between La $d_{z^2}$ and O $p_{x,y}$ states can mediate double-exchange like interaction between Ti $d_{xy}$ electrons. We further suggest that the structural and electrical modification of the outermost surface of LAO or switching the polarization direction of ferroelectric overlayers on LAO/STO can promote such La displacement.

Conversion of multilayer graphene into continuous ultrathin sp3-bonded carbon films on metal surfaces

The conversion of multilayer graphenes into sp^3-bonded carbon films on metal surfaces (through hydrogenation or fluorination of the outer surface of the top graphene layer) is indicated through first-principles computations. The main driving force for this conversion is the hybridization between carbon sp^3 orbitals and metal surface dz^2 orbitals. The induced electronic gap states in the carbon layers are confined in a region within 0.5 nm of the metal surface. Whether the conversion occurs depend on the fraction of hydrogenated (fluorinated) C atoms and on the number of stacked graphene layers. In the analysis of the Eliashberg spectral functions for the sp^3 carbon films on diamagnetic metals, the strong covalent metal-sp^3 carbon bonds induce soft phonon modes that predominantly contribute to large electron-phonon couplings, suggesting the possibility of phonon-mediated superconductivity. Our results suggest a route to experimental realization of large-area ultrathin sp^3-bonded carbon films on metal surfaces.
