Exploiting the latent space of deep AutoEncoders for the identification of signal pulses in noisy time-series

We propose a data-driven procedure, based on convolutional variational autoencoders, to identify the presence of signal pulses in long time-series. The dataset consists of synthetic waveforms, each composed of non-gaussian noise and a log-normal shaped signal of variable intensity, with a length of 10,000 samples. The model heavily compresses the input waveforms, allowing a direct study of such a reduced representation. After training for 150 epochs on 7,500 waveforms, a region in the latent space where the network encodes time-series presenting only background noise emerges, allowing in turn to tag as candidates for containing a signal those falling outside. When applied on a test dataset of freshly generated waveforms, 100% of the events with a large pulses are correctly labelled, and this fraction only decreases for signal amplitudes comparable with accidental noise pulses. This approach was designed to fully exploit the measurements in dual-phase Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers, as the one of the Recoil Directionality experiment, built in the context of the Darkside project. The goal is the identification of delayed electroluminescence signals, produced by low energy (~ a few keV) nuclear recoils, with a sensitivity at least comparable to the conventional reconstructions.

Proto-0: a prototype for validating key technologies of the DarkSide-20k experiment and beyond

The DarkSide-20k experiment, currently under construction at LNGS, will employ a next-generation dual-phase liquid-argon Time Projection Chamber (TPC) with SiPM-based Photon Detector Units and low-background materials to achieve the ambitious goal of operating with an instrumental background close to zero. Proto-0 is a small-scale dual-phase argon TPC operated at INFN Naples, designed to validate the integration of DarkSide-20k key technologies in a realistic detector environment and to study charge extraction and electroluminescence signal formation. In this short paper we report on the early operation of Proto-0 and its single-phase commissioning. We focus on the measurement of the scintillation light yield using external and internal calibration sources.

Extending direct measurements of argon nuclear recoils into the sub-keV regime with ReD and ReD+

Direct searches for dark matter in the form of WIMPs with argon-based detectors require precise measurements of the ionization yield \Qy\ for nuclear recoils at low energies. Prior to this work, direct experimental data were available only above 6.7 keV, leaving a critical gap in the energy region most relevant for low-mass WIMP searches. The Recoil Directionality (ReD) experiment addressed this limitation by measuring the argon \Qy\ for nuclear recoils between 2 and 10 keV using a dual-phase TPC irradiated with neutrons from a \Cf\ fission source. The results extend existing direct measurements to lower energies, show consistency with previous data above 7 keV, and indicate an enhanced ionization yield at low recoil energies. These measurements provide essential input for next-generation argon-based dark matter searches and directly motivate the upgraded ReD+ phase, designed to further extend sensitivity into the sub-keV recoil-energy regime.
