Phase transitions due to Euclidean gravity

We use Ising-like models to probe the thermal nature of Euclidean spacetime backgrounds. We determine which properties of the background -- curvature, the presence of a horizon, or temperature -- play a role in phase transitions. The geometries we use are Euclidean Schwarzschild, Rindler, extremal Reissner-Nördstrom (ERN), Anti deSitter (AdS), and deSitter (dS). Among these, Rindler is flat, AdS does not have a horizon, and both AdS and ERN have zero temperatures. We find second-order phase transitions as the metric parameter is varied in all cases except for Rindler. Specifically, we find that the transition from order to disorder occurs as the curvature -- or Euclidean gravity -- increases. This supports our conjecture that Euclidean gravity is an essential ingredient for these phase transitions, as opposed to the presence of a horizon or temperature. Separately, since the selected geometries are position-dependent, the Ising-like models constructed on them are inhomogeneous, whereby they generalize the standard Ising model. We find that a consequence of this is that criticality does not correspond to maximal correlation lengths and scale invariance.

Entanglement production through a cosmological bounce

In quantum cosmology, it is expected that the Big Bang singularity is resolved and the universe undergoes a bounce. We find that for Gaussian initial states, matter-gravity entanglement entropy rises rapidly during the bounce, declines, and then approaches a steady-state value following the bounce. These observations suggest that matter-gravity entanglement is a feature of the macroscopic universe and that there is no Second Law of entanglement entropy.

Quantum Field Theory On Causal Sets

We give a broad overview of a construction of a theory for matter on fixed causal set backgrounds. We introduce the Sorkin-Johnston formalism for a free (real) scalar field theory that is applicable to regions of continuum spacetimes as well as to causal sets. We show examples in the causal set, starting from the construction of Green functions to obtaining unique two-point functions using this formalism. We also mention other approaches that have been explored in constructing dynamics for matter on causal sets, including ideas for interacting theories and fermions.

Motivating semiclassical gravity: a classical-quantum approximation for bipartite quantum systems

We derive a "classical-quantum" approximation scheme for a broad class of bipartite quantum systems from fully quantum dynamics. In this approximation, one subsystem evolves via classical equations of motion with quantum corrections, and the other subsystem evolves quantum mechanically with equations of motion informed by the evolving classical degrees of freedom. Using perturbation theory, we derive an estimate for the growth rate of entanglement of the subsystems and deduce a "scrambling time" - the time required for the subsystems to become significantly entangled from an initial product state. We argue that a necessary condition for the validity of the classical-quantum approximation is consistency of initial data with the generalized Bohr correspondence principle. We illustrate the general formalism by numerically studying the fully quantum, fully classical, and classical-quantum dynamics of a system of two oscillators with nonlinear coupling. This system exhibits parametric resonance, and we show that quantum effects quench parametric resonance at late times. Lastly, we present a curious late-time scaling relation between the average value of the von Neumann entanglement of the interacting oscillator system and its total energy: $S\sim 2/3 \ln E$.

Spacetime Entanglement Entropy: Covariance and Discreteness

We review some recent results on Sorkin's spacetime formulation of the entanglement entropy (SSEE) for a free quantum scalar field both in the continuum and in manifold-like causal sets. The SSEE for a causal diamond in a 2d cylinder spacetime has been shown to have a Calabrese-Cardy form, while for de Sitter and Schwarzschild de Sitter horizons in dimensions $d>2$, it matches the mode-wise von-Neumann entropy. In these continuum examples the SSEE is regulated by imposing a UV cut-off. Manifold-like causal sets come with a natural covariant spacetime cut-off and thus provide an arena to study regulated QFT. However, the SSEE for different manifold like causal sets in $d=2$ and $d=4$ has been shown to exhibit a volume rather than an area law. The area law is recovered only when an additional UV cut-off is implemented in the scaling regime of the spectrum which mimics the continuum behaviour. We discuss the implications of these results and suggest that a volume-law may be a manifestation of the fundamental non-locality of causal sets and a sign of new UV physics.

Spacetime Entanglement Entropy of de Sitter and Black Hole Horizons

We calculate Sorkin's manifestly covariant entanglement entropy $\mathcal{S}$ for a massive and massless minimally coupled free Gaussian scalar field for the de Sitter horizon and Schwarzschild de Sitter horizons respectively in $d > 2$. In de Sitter spacetime we restrict the Bunch-Davies vacuum in the conformal patch to the static patch to obtain a mixed state. The finiteness of the spatial $\mathcal{L}^2$ norm in the static patch implies that $\mathcal{S}$ is well defined for each mode. We find that $\mathcal{S}$ for this mixed state is independent of the effective mass of the scalar field, and matches that of Higuchi and Yamamoto, where, a spatial density matrix was used to calculate the horizon entanglement entropy. Using a cut-off in the angular modes we show that $\mathcal{S} \propto A_{c}$, where $A_c$ is the area of the de Sitter cosmological horizon. Our analysis can be carried over to the black hole and cosmological horizon in Schwarzschild de Sitter spacetime, which also has finite spatial $\mathcal{L}^2$ norm in the static regions. Although the explicit form of the modes is not known in this case, we use appropriate boundary conditions for a massless minimally coupled scalar field to find the mode-wise $\mathcal{S}_{b,c}$, where $b,c$ denote the black hole and de Sitter cosmological horizons, respectively. As in the de Sitter calculation we see that $\mathcal{S}_{b,c} \propto A_{b,c}$ after taking a cut-off in the angular modes.

A Spacetime Calculation of the Calabrese-Cardy Entanglement Entropy

We calculate Sorkin's spacetime entanglement entropy of a Gaussian scalar field for complementary regions in the 2d cylinder spacetime and show that it has the Calabrese-Cardy form. We find that the cut-off dependent term is universal when we use a covariant UV cut-off. In addition, we show that the relative size-dependent term exhibits complementarity. Its coefficient is however not universal and depends on the choice of pure state. It asymptotes to the universal form within a natural class of pure states.

Aspects of Quantum Fields on Causal Sets

We study some kinematical aspects of quantum fields on causal sets. In particular, we are interested in free scalar fields on a fixed background causal set. We present various results building up to the study of the entanglement entropy of de Sitter horizons using causal sets. We begin by obtaining causal set analogs of Green functions for this field. First we construct the retarded Green function in a Riemann normal neighborhood (RNN) of an arbitrary curved spacetime. Then, we show that in de Sitter and patches of anti-de Sitter spacetimes the construction can be done beyond the RNN. This allows us to construct the QFT vacuum on the causal set using the Sorkin-Johnston construction. We calculate the SJ vacuum on a causal set approximated by de Sitter spacetime, using numerical techniques. We find that the causal set SJ vacuum does not correspond to any of the known Mottola-Allen vacua of de Sitter spacetime. This has potential phenomenological consequences for early universe physics. Finally, we study the spacetime entanglement entropy for causal set de Sitter horizons. The entanglement entropy of de Sitter horizons is of particular interest. As in the case of nested causal diamonds in 2d Minkowski spacetime, we find that the causal set naturally gives a volume law of entropy, both for nested causal diamonds in 4d Minkowski spacetime as well as 2d and 4d de Sitter spacetimes. However, an area law emerges when the high frequency modes in the SJ spectrum are truncated. The choice of truncation turns out to be non-trivial and we end with several interesting questions.

Entanglement Entropy of Causal Set de Sitter Horizons

de Sitter cosmological horizons are known to exhibit thermodynamic properties similar to black hole horizons. In this work we study causal set de Sitter horizons, using Sorkin's spacetime entanglement entropy (SSEE) formula, for a conformally coupled quantum scalar field. We calculate the causal set SSEE for the Rindler-like wedge of a symmetric slab of de Sitter spacetime in $d=2,4$ spacetime dimensions using the Sorkin-Johnston vacuum state. We find that the SSEE obeys an area law when the spectrum of the Pauli-Jordan operator is appropriately truncated in both the de Sitter slab as well as its restriction to the Rindler-like wedge. Without this truncation, the SSEE satisfies a volume law. This is in agreement with Sorkin and Yazdi's calculations for the causal set SSEE for nested causal diamonds in $\mathbb{M}^2$, where they showed that an area law is obtained only after truncating the Pauli-Jordan spectrum. In this work we explore different truncation schemes with the criterion that the SSEE so obtained obeys an area law.

Manifold Properties from Causal Sets using Chains

We study the utility of chains defined on causal sets in estimating continuum properties like the curvature, the proper time and the spacetime dimension through a numerical analysis. In particular, we show that in $\text{dS}_2$ and $\text{FLRW}_3$ spacetimes the formalism of arXiv:1212.0631 with slight modifications gives the right continuum properties. We also discuss a possible test of manifoldlikeness using this formalism by considering two models of non-manifoldlike causal sets. This is a part of a broader idea of the geometrical reconstruction of continuum properties given a discrete sub structure, in this case the causal set.

Studies on the SJ Vacuum in de Sitter Spacetime

In this work we study the Sorkin-Johnston (SJ) vacuum in de Sitter spacetime for free scalar field theory. For the massless theory we find that the SJ vacuum can neither be obtained from the $O(4)$ Fock vacuum of Allen and Folacci nor from the non-Fock de Sitter invariant vacuum of Kirsten and Garriga. Using a causal set discretisation of a slab of 2d and 4d de Sitter spacetime, we find the causal set SJ vacuum for a range of masses $m \geq 0$ of the free scalar field. While our simulations are limited to a finite volume slab of global de Sitter spacetime, they show good convergence as the volume is increased. We find that the 4d causal set SJ vacuum shows a significant departure from the continuum Motolla-Allen $α$-vacua. Moreover, the causal set SJ vacuum is well-defined for both the minimally coupled massless $m=0$ and the conformally coupled massless $m=m_c$ cases. This is at odds with earlier work on the continuum de Sitter SJ vacuum where it was argued that the continuum SJ vacuum is ill-defined for these masses. Our results hint at an important tension between the discrete and continuum behaviour of the SJ vacuum in de Sitter and suggest that the former cannot in general be identified with the Mottola-Allen $α$-vacua even for $m>0$.

Scalar Field Green Functions on Causal Sets

We examine the validity and scope of Johnston's models for scalar field retarded Green functions on causal sets in 2 and 4 dimensions. As in the continuum, the massive Green function can be obtained from the massless one, and hence the key task in causal set theory is to first identify the massless Green function. We propose that the 2-d model provides a Green function for the massive scalar field on causal sets approximated by any topologically trivial 2 dimensional spacetime. We explicitly demonstrate that this is indeed the case in a Riemann normal neighbourhood. In 4-d the model can again be used to provide a Green function for the massive scalar field in a Riemann normal neighbourhood which we compare to Bunch and Parker's continuum Green function. We find that the same prescription can also be used for deSitter spacetime and the conformally flat patch of anti deSitter spacetime. Our analysis then allows us to suggest a generalisation of Johnston's model for the Green function for a causal set approximated by 3 dimensional flat spacetime.
