Zero-form and one-form symmetries of the ABJ and related theories

The zero-form and one-form global symmetries of the Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis (ABJ) and related theories, with at least $\mathcal{N}=6$ supersymmetry in three dimensions, are examined in detail. Starting from well-known dualities between theories with orthogonal and symplectic gauge groups and those with unitary gauge groups, we gauge their one-form symmetries or their subgroups and obtain new dualities. One side of the latter involves theories with special orthogonal and symplectic gauge groups, and the other side involves theories with unitary gauge groups; there is a discrete quotient on one or both sides of the duality. We study the refined superconformal indices of such theories and map the symmetries across the dualities, with particular attention to their discrete part. As a generalisation, we also find a new duality between a circular quiver with a discrete quotient of alternating special orthogonal and symplectic gauge groups and a three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ circular (Kronheimer-Nakajima) quiver with unitary gauge groups, whose Higgs or Coulomb branch describes an instanton on a singular orbifold.

Conformal Manifolds and 3d Mirrors of $(D_n,D_m)$ Theories

The Argyres-Douglas (AD) theories of type $(D_n,D_m)$, realized by type IIB geometrical engineering on a single hypersurface singularity, are studied. We analyze their conformal manifolds and propose the 3d mirror theories of all theories in this class upon reduction on a circle. A subclass of the AD theories in question that admits marginal couplings is found to be $\mathrm{SO}$ or $\mathrm{USp}$ gaugings of certain $D_p(\mathrm{SO}(2N))$ and $D_p(\mathrm{USp}(2N))$ theories. For such theories, we develop a method to derive this weakly-coupled description from the Newton polygon associated to the singularity. We further find that the presence of crepant resolutions of the geometry is reflected in the presence of a (non-abelian) symplectic-type gauge node in the quiver description of the 3d mirror theory. The other important results include the 3d mirrors of all $D_p(\mathrm{SO}(2N))$ theories, as well as certain properties of the $D_p(\mathrm{USp}(2N))$ theories that admit Lagrangian descriptions.

Conformal Manifolds and 3d Mirrors of Argyres-Douglas theories

Argyres-Douglas theories constitute an important class of superconformal field theories in $4$d. The main focus of this paper is on two infinite families of such theories, known as $D^b_p(\mathrm{SO}(2N))$ and $(A_m, D_n)$. We analyze in depth their conformal manifolds. In doing so we encounter several theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ of twisted $A_{\text{odd}}$, twisted $A_{\text{even}}$ and twisted $D$ types associated with a sphere with one twisted irregular puncture and one twisted regular puncture. These models include $D_p(G)$ theories, with $G$ non-simply-laced algebras. A number of new properties of such theories are discussed in detail, along with new SCFTs that arise from partially closing the twisted regular puncture. Moreover, we systematically present the $3$d mirror theories, also known as the magnetic quivers, for the $D^b_p(\mathrm{SO}(2N))$ theories, with $p \geq b$, and the $(A_m, D_n)$ theories, with arbitrary $m$ and $n$. We also discuss the $3$d reduction and mirror theories of certain $D^b_p(\mathrm{SO}(2N))$ theories, with $p < b$, where the former arises from gauging topological symmetries of some $T^σ_ρ[\mathrm{SO}(2M)]$ theories that are not manifest in the Lagrangian description of the latter.

The moduli space of instantons on an ALE space from 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ field theories

The moduli space of instantons on an ALE space is studied using the moduli space of $\mathcal{N}=4$ field theories in three dimensions. For instantons in a simple gauge group $G$ on $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_n$, the Hilbert series of such an instanton moduli space is computed from the Coulomb branch of the quiver given by the affine Dynkin diagram of $G$ with flavour nodes of unitary groups attached to various nodes of the Dynkin diagram. We provide a simple prescription to determine the ranks and the positions of these flavour nodes from the order of the orbifold $n$ and from the residual subgroup of $G$ that is left unbroken by the monodromy of the gauge field at infinity. For $G$ a simply laced group of type $A$, $D$ or $E$, the Higgs branch of such a quiver describes the moduli space of instantons in projective unitary group $PU(n) \cong U(n)/U(1)$ on orbifold $\mathbb{C}^2/\hat{G}$, where $\hat{G}$ is the discrete group that is in McKay correspondence to $G$. Moreover, we present the quiver whose Coulomb branch describes the moduli space of $SO(2N)$ instantons on a smooth ALE space of type $A_{2n-1}$ and whose Higgs branch describes the moduli space of $PU(2n)$ instantons on a smooth ALE space of type $D_{N}$.

New aspects of Argyres--Douglas theories and their dimensional reduction

Argyres-Douglas (AD) theories constitute an infinite class of superconformal field theories in four dimensions with a number of interesting properties. We study several new aspects of AD theories engineered in $A$-type class $\mathcal{S}$ with one irregular puncture of Type I or Type II and also a regular puncture. These include conformal manifolds, structures of the Higgs branch, as well as the three dimensional gauge theories coming from the reduction on a circle. The latter admit a description in terms of a linear quiver with unitary and special unitary gauge groups, along with a number of twisted hypermultiplets. The origin of these twisted hypermultiplets is explained from the four dimensional perspective. We also propose the three dimensional mirror theories for such linear quivers. These provide explicit descriptions of the magnetic quivers of all AD theories in question in terms of quiver diagrams with unitary gauge groups, together with a collection of free hypermultiplets. A number of quiver gauge theories presented in this paper are new and have not been studied elsewhere in the literature.

Marginal operators and supersymmetry enhancement in 3d $S$-fold SCFTs

The study of exactly marginal deformations of superconformal field theories is a topic that has received considerable attention due to their rich properties. We investigate the $\mathcal{N}=2$ preserving exactly marginal operators of 3d $S$-fold SCFTs. Two families of such theories are considered: one is constructed by gauging the diagonal flavour symmetry of the $T(U(2))$ and $T(U(3))$ theories, and the other by gauging the diagonal flavour symmetry of the $T^{[2,1^2]}_{[2,1^2]}(SU(4))$ theory. In both families, it is possible to turn on a Chern--Simons level for each gauge group and to couple to each theory various numbers of hypermultiplets. The detailed analysis of the exactly marginal operators, along with the superconformal indices, allows us to determine whether supersymmetry gets enhanced in the infrared and to deduce the amount of supersymmetry of the corresponding SCFT.

3d mirrors of the circle reduction of twisted $A_{2N}$ theories of class $\mathsf{S}$

Mirror symmetry has proven to be a powerful tool to study several properties of higher dimensional superconformal field theories upon compactification to three dimensions. We propose a quiver description for the mirror theories of the circle reduction of twisted $A_{2N}$ theories of class $\mathsf{S}$ in four dimensions. Although these quivers bear a resemblance to the star-shaped quivers previously studied in the literature, they contain unitary, symplectic and special orthogonal gauge groups, along with hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation. The vacuum moduli spaces of these quiver theories are studied in detail. The Coulomb branch Hilbert series of the mirror theory can be matched with that of the Higgs branch of the corresponding four dimensional theory, providing a non-trivial check of our proposal. Moreover various deformations by mass and Fayet-Iliopoulos terms of such quiver theories are investigated. The fact that several of them flow to expected theories also gives another strong support for the proposal. Utilising the mirror quiver description, we discover a new supersymmetry enhancement renormalisation group flow.

Symmetry enhancement and duality walls in 5d gauge theories

Gauge theories in four dimensions can exhibit interesting low energy phenomena, such as infrared enhancements of global symmetry. We explore a class of 4d N=1 gauge theories arising from a construction that is motivated by duality walls in 5d gauge theories. Their quiver descriptions bear a resemblance to 4d theories obtained by compactifying 6d N=(1,0) superconformal field theories on a torus with fluxes, but with lower number of flavours and different number of gauge singlets and superpotentials. One of the main features of these theories is that they exhibit a flavour symmetry enhancement, and with supersymmetry enhancement for certain models, in the infrared. Properties of the superconformal fixed points of such theories are investigated in detail.

New 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT's with $N^{3/2}$ scaling

We construct several novel examples of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ models whose free energy scales as $N^{3/2}$ at large $N$. This is the first step towards the identification of field theories with an M-theory dual. Furthermore, we match the volumes extracted from the free energy with the ones computed from the Hilbert series. We perform a similar analysis for the 4d parents of the 3d models, matching the volume extracted from the $a$ conformal anomaly to that obtained from the Hilbert series. For some of the 4d models, we show the existence of a Sasaki-Einstein metric on the internal space of the candidate type IIB gravity dual.

Duality walls in the 4d N=2 SU(N) gauge theory with 2N flavours

S-duality domain walls are extended objects in supersymmetric gauge theories with several rich physical properties. This paper focuses on 3d N=2 gauge theories associated with S-duality walls in the 4d N=2 SU(N) gauge theory with 2N flavours. The theories associated with multiple duality walls are constructed by gluing together a basic building block, which is the theory associated with a single duality wall. We propose the prescription for gluing many copies of such a basic building block together as well as present the prescription for self-gluing. A number of dualities between such theories are discovered and studied using the supersymmetric index. This work generalises the notion of the S-fold theory, which has been so far studied extensively in the context of duality walls in the 4d super-Yang-Mills theory, to the theory with lower amounts of supersymmetry.

Supersymmetric Indices of 3d S-fold SCFTs

Enhancement of global symmetry and supersymmetry in the infrared is one of the most intriguing phenomena in quantum field theory. We investigate such phenomena in a large class of three dimensional superconformal field theories, known as the S-fold SCFTs. Supersymmetric indices are computed for a number of theories containing small rank gauge groups. It is found that indices of several models exhibit enhancement of supersymmetry at the superconformal fixed point in the infrared. Dualities between S-fold theories that have different quiver descriptions are also analysed. We explore a new class of theories with a discrete global symmetry, whose gauge symmetry in the quiver has a different global structure from those that have been studied earlier.

Variations on S-fold CFTs

A local SL(2,Z) transformation on the Type IIB brane configuration gives rise to an interesting class of superconformal field theories, known as the S-fold CFTs. Previously it has been proposed that the corresponding quiver theory has a link involving the T(U(N)) theory. In this paper, we generalise the preceding result by studying quivers that contain a T(G) link, where G is self-dual under S-duality. In particular, the cases of G = SO(2N), USp'(2N) and G_2 are examined in detail. We propose the theories that arise from an appropriate insertion of an S-fold into a brane system, in the presence of an orientifold threeplane or an orientifold fiveplane. By analysing the moduli spaces, we test such a proposal against its S-dual configuration using mirror symmetry. The case of G_2 corresponds to a novel class of quivers, whose brane construction is not available. We present several mirror pairs, containing G_2 gauge groups, that have not been discussed before in the literature.

The moduli spaces of S-fold CFTs

An S-fold has played an important role in constructing supersymmetric field theories with interesting features. It can be viewed as a type of AdS_4 solutions of Type IIB string theory where the fields in overlapping patches are glued by elements of SL(2,Z). This paper examines three dimensional quiver theories that arise from brane configurations with an inclusion of the S-fold. An important feature of such a quiver is that it contains a link, which is the T(U(N)) theory, between two U(N) groups, along with bifundamental and fundamental hypermultiplets. We systematically study the moduli spaces of those quiver theories, including the cases in which the non-zero Chern-Simons levels are turned on. A number of such moduli spaces turns out to have a very rich structure and tells us about the brane dynamics in the presence of an S-fold.

Branes, partition functions and quadratic monopole superpotentials

We obtain the brane setup describing 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ dualities for $USp(2N_c)$ and $U(N_c)$ SQCD with monopole superpotentials. This classification follows from a complete analysis of affine and twisted affine compactifications from 4d. The analysis leads to a new duality for the unitary case that has been previously overlooked in the literature. We check this by matching of the three sphere partition function of the two sides of this new duality and find a perfect agreement. Furthermore we use the partition function to predict new 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ dualities for SQCD with monopole superpotentials and tensorial matter.

New 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ Dualities from Quadratic Monopoles

Aspects of three dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories with monopole superpotentials and their dualities are investigated. The moduli spaces of a number of such theories are studied using Hilbert series. Moreover, we propose new dualities involving quadratic powers for the monopole superpotentials, for unitary, symplectic and orthogonal gauge groups. These dualities are then tested using the three sphere partition function and matching of the Hilbert series. We also provide an argument for the obstruction to the duality for theories with quartic monopole superpotentials.

Large $N$ topologically twisted index: necklace quivers, dualities, and Sasaki-Einstein spaces

In this paper, we calculate the topological free energy for a number of ${\mathcal N} \geq 2$ Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons-matter theories at large $N$ and fixed Chern-Simons levels. The topological free energy is defined as the logarithm of the partition function of the theory on $S^2 \times S^1$ with a topological A-twist along $S^2$ and can be reduced to a matrix integral by exploiting the localization technique. The theories of our interest are dual to a variety of Calabi-Yau four-fold singularities, including a product of two asymptotically locally Euclidean singularities and the cone over various well-known homogeneous Sasaki-Einstein seven-manifolds, $N^{0,1,0}$, $V^{5,2}$, and $Q^{1,1,1}$. We check that the large $N$ topological free energy can be matched for theories which are related by dualities, including mirror symmetry and $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ duality.

The Small $E_8$ Instanton and the Kraft Procesi Transition

One of the simplest $(1,0)$ supersymmetric theories in six dimensions lives on the world volume of one M5 brane at a $D$ type singularity $\mathbb{C}^2/D_k$. The low energy theory is given by an SQCD theory with $Sp(k-4)$ gauge group, a precise number of $2k$ flavors which is anomaly free, and a scale which is set by the inverse gauge coupling. The Higgs branch at finite coupling $\mathcal{H}_f$ is a closure of a nilpotent orbit of $D_{2k}$ and develops many more flat directions as the inverse gauge coupling is set to zero (violating a standard lore that wrongly claims the Higgs branch remains classical). The quaternionic dimension grows by $29$ for any $k$ and the Higgs branch stops being a closure of a nilpotent orbit for $k>4$, with an exception of $k=4$ where it becomes $\overline{{\rm min}_{E_8}}$, the closure of the minimal nilpotent orbit of $E_8$, thus having a rare phenomenon of flavor symmetry enhancement in six dimensions. Geometrically, the natural inclusion of $\mathcal{H}_f \subset \mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ fits into the Brieskorn Slodowy theory of transverse slices, and the transverse slice is computed to be $\overline{{\rm min}_{E_8}}$ for any $k>3$. This is identified with the well known small $E_8$ instanton transition where 1 tensor multiplet is traded with 29 hypermultiplets, thus giving a physical interpretation to the geometric theory. By the analogy with the classical case, we call this the Kraft Procesi transition.

Mirror theories of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD

Using a recently proposed duality for $U(N)$ supersymmetric QCD (SQCD) in three dimensions with monopole superpotential, in this paper we derive the mirror dual description of $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD with unitary gauge group, generalizing the known mirror dual description of abelian gauge theories. We match the chiral ring of the dual theories and their partition functions on the squashed sphere. We also conjecture a generalization for SQCD with orthogonal and symplectic gauge groups.
