Poincaré invariance in NRQCD and pNRQCD revisited

We investigate how fields transform under the Poincaré group in nonrelativistic effective field theories of QCD. In constructing these transformations, we rely only on symmetries and field redefinitions to limit the number of allowed terms. By requiring invariance of the action under these transformations, nontrivial relations between Wilson coefficients for both nonrelativistic QCD and potential nonrelativistic QCD are derived. We show explicitly how the Poincaré algebra is satisfied, and how this gives complementary information on the Wilson coefficients. We also briefly discuss the implications of our results, as well as the possibility of applying this method to other types of effective field theories.

Heavy quarkonium suppression in a fireball

We perform a comprehensive study of the time evolution of heavy-quarkonium states in an expanding hot QCD medium by implementing effective field theory techniques in the framework of open quantum systems. The formalism incorporates quarkonium production and its subsequent evolution in the fireball including quarkonium dissociation and recombination. We consider a fireball with a local temperature that is much smaller than the inverse size of the quarkonium and much larger than its binding energy. The calculation is performed at an accuracy that is leading-order in the heavy-quark density expansion and next-to-leading order in the multipole expansion. Within this accuracy, for a smooth variation of the temperature and large times, the evolution equation can be written as a Lindblad equation. We solve the Lindblad equation numerically both for a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma and a strongly-coupled medium. As an application, we compute the nuclear modification factor for the $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ states. We also consider the case of static quarks, which can be solved analytically. Our study fulfils three essential conditions: it conserves the total number of heavy quarks, it accounts for the non-Abelian nature of QCD and it avoids classical approximations.

Status of rates and rate equations for thermal leptogenesis

In many realizations of leptogenesis, heavy right-handed neutrinos play the main role in the generation of an imbalance between matter and antimatter in the early Universe. Hence, it is relevant to address quantitatively their dynamics in a hot and dense environment by taking into account the various thermal aspects of the problem at hand. The strong washout regime offers an interesting framework to carry out calculations systematically and reduce theoretical uncertainties. Indeed, any matter-antimatter asymmetry generated when the temperature of the hot plasma $T$ exceeds the right-handed neutrino mass scale $M$ is efficiently erased, and one can focus on the temperature window $T \ll M$. We review recent progresses in the thermal field theoretic derivation of the key ingredients for the leptogenesis mechanism: the right-handed neutrino production rate, the CP asymmetry in the heavy-neutrino decays and the washout rates. The derivation of evolution equations for the heavy-neutrino and lepton-asymmetry number densities, their rigorous formulation and applicability are also discussed.

The Born-Oppenheimer approximation in an effective field theory language

The Born--Oppenheimer approximation is the standard tool for the study of molecular systems. It is founded on the observation that the energy scale of the electron dynamics in a molecule is larger than that of the nuclei. A very similar physical picture can be used to describe QCD states containing heavy quarks as well as light-quarks or gluonic excitations. In this work, we derive the Born--Oppenheimer approximation for QED molecular systems in an effective field theory framework by sequentially integrating out degrees of freedom living at energies above the typical energy scale where the dynamics of the heavy degrees of freedom occurs. In particular, we compute the matching coefficients of the effective field theory for the case of the $H^+_2$ diatomic molecule that are relevant to compute its spectrum up to ${\cal O}(mα^5)$. Ultrasoft photon loops contribute at this order, being ultimately responsible for the molecular Lamb shift. In the effective field theory the scaling of all the operators is homogeneous, which facilitates the determination of all the relevant contributions, an observation that may become useful for high-precision calculations. Using the above case as a guidance, we construct under some conditions an effective field theory for QCD states formed by a color-octet heavy quark-antiquark pair bound with a color-octet light-quark pair or excited gluonic state, highlighting the similarities and differences between the QED and QCD systems. Assuming that the multipole expansion is applicable, we construct the heavy-quark potential up to next-to-leading order in the multipole expansion in terms of nonperturbative matching coefficients to be obtained from lattice QCD.

Effective field theories for van der Waals interactions

Van der Waals interactions between two neutral but polarizable systems at a separation $R$ much larger than the typical size of the systems are at the core of a broad sweep of contemporary problems in settings ranging from atomic, molecular and condensed matter physics to strong interactions and gravity. We reexamine the dispersive van der Waals interactions between two hydrogen atoms. The novelty of the analysis resides in the usage of nonrelativistic EFTs of QED. In this framework, the van der Waals potential acquires the meaning of a matching coefficient in an EFT suited to describe the low energy dynamics of an atom pair. It may be computed systematically as a series in $R$ times some typical atomic scale and in the fine structure constant $α$. The van der Waals potential gets short range contributions and radiative corrections, which we compute in dimensional regularization and renormalize here for the first time. Results are given in $d$ spacetime dimensions. One can distinguish among different regimes depending on the relative size between $1/R$ and the typical atomic bound state energy $mα^2$. Each regime is characterized by a specific hierarchy of scales and a corresponding tower of EFTs. The short distance regime is characterized by $1/R \gg mα^2$ and the LO van der Waals potential is the London potential. We compute also NNNLO corrections. In the long distance regime we have $1/R\ll mα^2$. In this regime, the van der Waals potential contains contact terms, which are parametrically larger than the Casimir-Polder potential that describes the potential at large distances. In the EFT the Casimir-Polder potential counts as a NNNLO effect. In the intermediate distance regime, $1/R\sim mα^2$, a significantly more complex potential is obtained which we compare with the two previous limiting cases. We conclude commenting on the hadronic van der Waals case.

Momentum anisotropy effects for quarkonium in a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma below the melting temperature

In the early stages of heavy-ion collisions, the hot QCD matter expands more longitudinally than transversely. This imbalance causes the system to become rapidly colder in the longitudinal direction and a local momentum anisotropy appears. In this paper, we study the heavy-quarkonium spectrum in the presence of a small plasma anisotropy. We work in the framework of pNRQCD at finite temperature. We inspect arrangements of non-relativistic and thermal scales complementary to those considered in the literature. In particular, we consider temperatures larger and Debye masses smaller than the binding energy, which is a temperature range relevant for presently running LHC experiments. In this setting we compute the leading thermal corrections to the binding energy and the thermal width induced by quarkonium gluo-dissociation.

Quarkonium suppression in heavy-ion collisions: an open quantum system approach

We address the evolution of heavy-quarkonium states in an expanding quark-gluon plasma by implementing effective field theory techniques in the framework of open quantum systems. In this setting we compute the nuclear modification factors for quarkonia that are $S$-wave Coulombic bound states in a strongly-coupled quark-gluon plasma. The calculation is performed at an accuracy that is leading-order in the heavy-quark density expansion and next-to-leading order in the multipole expansion. The quarkonium density-matrix evolution equations can be written in the Lindblad form, and, hence, they account for both dissociation and recombination. Thermal mass shifts, thermal widths and the Lindblad equation itself depend on only two non-perturbative parameters: the heavy-quark momentum diffusion coefficient and its dispersive counterpart. Finally, by numerically solving the Lindblad equation, we provide results for the $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ suppression.

CP asymmetry in heavy Majorana neutrino decays at finite temperature: the hierarchical case

We consider the simplest realization of leptogenesis with one heavy Majorana neutrino species much lighter than the other ones. In this scenario, when the temperature of the early universe is smaller than the lightest Majorana neutrino mass, we compute at first order in the Standard Model couplings and, for each coupling, at leading order in the termperature the CP asymmetry in the decays of the lightest neutrino into leptons and anti-leptons. We perform the calculation using a hierarchy of two effective field theories organized as expansions in the inverse of the heavy-neutrino masses. In the ultimate effective field theory, leading thermal corrections proportional to the Higgs self coupling and the gauge couplings are encoded in one single operator of dimension five, whereas corrections proportional to the top Yukawa coupling are encoded in four operators of dimension seven, which we compute.

CP asymmetry in heavy Majorana neutrino decays at finite temperature: the nearly degenerate case

In a model where Majorana neutrinos heavier than the electroweak scale couple to Standard Model Higgs bosons and leptons, we compute systematically thermal corrections to the direct and indirect CP asymmetries in the Majorana neutrino decays. These are key ingredients entering the equations that describe the thermodynamic evolution of the induced lepton-number asymmetry eventually leading to the baryon asymmetry in the universe. We compute the thermal corrections in an effective field theory framework that assumes the temperature smaller than the masses of the Majorana neutrinos and larger than the electroweak scale, and we provide the leading corrections in an expansion of the temperature over the mass. In this work, we consider the case of two Majorana neutrinos with nearly degenerate masses.

Long-range properties of $1S$ bottomonium states

In the framework of weakly-coupled pNRQCD, we derive, first, an analytical expression for the chromo-polarizability of $1S$-bottomonium states in agreement with previous determinations. Then we use the QCD trace anomaly to obtain the two-pion production amplitude for the chromo-polarizability operator and match the result to a chiral effective field theory with $1S$-bottomonium states and pions as degrees-of-freedom. In this chiral effective field theory we compute some long-range properties of the $1S$ bottomonium generated by the pion coupling such as the leading chiral logarithm to the $1S$-bottomonium mass and the van der Waals potential between two $1S$-bottomonium states. Both results improve on previously known expressions.

The Polyakov loop at next-to-next-to leading order

We calculate the next-to-next-to-leading correction to the expectation value of the Polyakov loop or equivalently to the free energy of a static charge. This correction is of order $g^5$. We show that up to this order the free energy of the static charge is proportional to the quadratic Casimir operator of the corresponding representation. We also compare our perturbative result with the most recent lattice results in SU(3) gauge theory.

Studies of Hadron Structure and Interactions with the $\overline{\bf P}$ANDA Experiment at FAIR

The $\overline{\mbox{P}}$ANDA experiment together with the high quality antiproton beam at HESR will be a powerful tool to address fundamental questions of hadron physics in the charm and multi-strange hadron sector. In connection with the recent data in the hidden charm sector, $\overline{\mbox{P}}$ANDA will be able to deliver decisive contributions to this field, due to the complementarity of the $\overline{p} p$ entrance channel and the capabilities of the combined storage ring and detector system under construction.

Resonances in QCD

We report on the EMMI Rapid Reaction Task Force meeting 'Resonances in QCD', which took place at GSI October 12-14, 2015. A group of 26 people met to discuss the physics of resonances in QCD. The aim of the meeting was defined by the following three key questions: What is needed to understand the physics of resonances in QCD? Where does QCD lead us to expect resonances with exotic quantum numbers? What experimental efforts are required to arrive at a coherent picture? For light mesons and baryons only those with ${\it up}$, ${\it down}$ and ${\it strange}$ quark content were considered. For heavy-light and heavy-heavy meson systems, those with ${\it charm}$ quarks were the focus. This document summarizes the discussions by the participants, which in turn led to the coherent conclusions we present here.

Quarkonium Hybrids with Nonrelativistic Effective Field Theories

We construct a nonrelativistic effective field theory description of heavy quarkonium hybrids from QCD. We identify the symmetries of the system made of a heavy quark, a heavy antiquark, and glue in the static limit. Corrections to this limit can be obtained order by order in an expansion in the inverse of the mass $m$ of the heavy quark. At order $1/m$ in the expansion, we obtain at the level of potential Non-Relativistic QCD a system of coupled Schrödinger equations that describes hybrid spin-symmetry multiplets, including the mixing of different static energies into the hybrid states, an effect known as $Λ$-doubling in molecular physics. In the short distance, the static potentials depend on two nonperturbative parameters, the gluelump mass and the quadratic slope, which can be determined from lattice calculations. We adopt a renormalon subtraction scheme for the calculation of the perturbative part of the potential. We numerically solve the coupled Schrödinger equations and obtain the masses for the lowest lying spin-symmetry multiplets for $c\bar{c}$, $b\bar{c}$, and $b\bar{b}$ hybrids. The $Λ$-doubling effect breaks the degeneracy between opposite parity spin-symmetry multiplets and lowers the mass of the multiplets that get mixed contributions of different static energies. We compare our findings to the experimental data, direct lattice computations, sum rules calculations, and discuss the relation to the Born-Oppenheimer approximation.

Effective string theory and the long-range relativistic corrections to the quark-antiquark potential

The complete expression of the heavy quark-antiquark potential up to order $1/m^2$ is known from QCD in terms of Wilson loop expectation values. We use that expression and a mapping, assumed to be valid at large distances, between Wilson loop expectation values and correlators evaluated in the effective string theory, to compute the potential. We obtain previously unknown results for the spin and momentum-independent parts of the potential. These are linearly rising with the distance and may be interpreted as relativistic corrections to the string tension. We confirm known results for the other parts of the potential. Finally, we compute the discrete spectrum of a heavy quark-antiquark pair whose interaction is just given by the obtained potential.

Renormalization of Loop Functions in QCD

We give a short overview of the renormalization properties of rectangular Wilson loops, the Polyakov loop correlator and the cyclic Wilson loop. We then discuss how to renormalize loops with more than one intersection, using the simplest non-trivial case as an illustrative example. Our findings expand on previous treatments. The generalized exponentiation theorem is applied to the Polyakov loop correlator and used to renormalize linear divergences in the cyclic Wilson loop.

An effective field theory for non-relativistic Majorana neutrinos

Heavy Majorana neutrinos enter in many scenarios of physics beyond the Standard Model: in the original seesaw mechanism they provide a natural explanation for the small masses of the Standard Model neutrinos and in the simplest leptogenesis framework they are at the origin of the baryonic matter of the universe. In this paper, we develop an effective field theory for non-relativistic Majorana particles, which is analogous to the heavy-quark effective theory. Then, we apply it to the case of a heavy Majorana neutrino decaying in a hot and dense plasma of Standard Model particles, whose temperature is much smaller than the mass of the Majorana neutrino but still much larger than the electroweak scale. The neutrino width gets zero-temperature contributions that can be computed from in-vacuum matrix elements, and thermal corrections. Only the latter will be addressed. Symmetry and power counting arguments made manifest by the effective field theory restrict the form of the thermal corrections and simplify their calculation. The final result agrees with recent determinations obtained with different methods. The effective field theory presented here is suitable to be used for a variety of different models involving non-relativistic Majorana fermions.

Symmetries of the Three Heavy-Quark System and the Color-Singlet Static Energy at NNLL

We study the symmetries of the three heavy-quark system under exchange of the quark fields within the effective field theory framework of potential non-relativistic QCD. The symmetries constrain the form of the matching coefficients in the effective theory. We then focus on the color-singlet sector and determine the so far unknown leading ultrasoft contribution to the static potential, which is of order alpha_s^4 ln(μ), and consequently to the static energy, which is of order alpha_s^4 ln(alpha_s). Finally, in the case of an equilateral geometry, we solve the renormalization group equations and resum the leading ultrasoft logarithms for the static potential of three quarks in a color singlet, octet and decuplet representation.
