Vacuum Cherenkov radiation in supercritical magnetic fields

In the presence of very intense electromagnetic fields, the refractive index of vacuum is modified such that light velocity is less than $c$ and ultrarelativistic charged particles can be faster than light and can induce Cherenkov radiation. We present the comparison of the Cherenkov radiation produced by the Euler-Heisenberg theory for critical and supercritical magnetic fields. We also make the comparison between the Cherenkov and the synchrotron radiation produced by the charged particles.

Ultracompact Anisotropic Stars and Gravastars in General Relativity

We study static, spherically symmetric ultracompact objects in General Relativity with anisotropic stress. Using the covariant anisotropic equation of state and assuming homogeneous density, we construct a mostly analytical model admitting configurations beyond the Buchdahl limit and with compactness arbitrarily close to the black hole value. The solutions exhibit two regimes separated by a critical curve in the parameter space of compactness and anisotropy, associated with the divergence of the central pressure: regular anisotropic configurations with positive central pressure, and singular configurations with negative central pressure for arbitrary anisotropy. In the latter case, we show that introducing a thick shell removes the pressure divergence, yielding regular ultracompact gravastar configurations. We further construct both anisotropic and isotropic gravastar models using this thick-shell construction.

Redshift of light emitted by particles orbiting a black hole immersed in a strong magnetic field

In this paper we analyze the frequency shifts of the light emitted by particles describing stable circular geodesics around a static black hole immersed in an external magnetic field of arbitrary strength. This system is represented by the Ernst solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations. The presence of the magnetic field and its magnitude affects both the geodesics and the red-blueshifts of the light emitted by neutral or charged particles orbiting the black hole. When the magnetic field is turned off we recover the characteristic redshifts coming from particles orbiting a Schwarzschild black hole.

Birefringence and QuasiNormal Modes of the Einstein-Euler-Heisenberg Black Hole

In this contribution we study the birefringence and the quasinormal modes (QNM) in the eikonal approximation, of the Einstein-Euler-Heisenberg black hole (EEH-BH) . The EEH-BH is an exact solution of the Einstein equations coupled to the Euler-Heisenberg nonlinear electrodynamics. It is well known that in the presence of strong electromagnetic fields light rays modify their trajectories and do follow the null geodesics of an effective metric as a result of the nonlinear interaction between light and the intense magnetic or electric background. In the Euler-Heisenberg theory the phenomenon of birefringence arises and then exist two possible light trajectories for polarized light in the vicinity of the EEH-BH. On the other hand, using the correspondence between the parameters of the null unstable geodesics and the quasinormal modes in the eikonal approximation. We determine these QNM for both, the electric and the magnetic EEH-BH and compare them with its linear counterpart, the Reissner-Nordström black hole, since there are two effective metrics, to each one corresponds one null geodesic that renders two possible QNM from the same compact object.

Thermodynamics of the Euler-Heisenberg-AdS black hole

We generalize the solution to the Euler-Heisenberg (EH) theory coupled to gravity that represents a nonlinearly charged static black hole (BH) introducing the cosmological constant; the obtained solution is characterized by four parameters: mass $M$, electric charge $Q$, cosmological constant $Λ$ (positive or negative) and the Euler-Heisenberg theory parameter $a$. Then we briefly analyze some BH features like horizons, electromagnetic field and geodesics. We mainly focus on its thermodynamic properties in the extended space where the anti-de Sitter parameter is interpreted as the pressure; we show the consistency between the Smarr formula and the first law of BH thermodynamics, interpreting the parameter of the EH theory as the vacuum polarization. We determine the equation of state and the critical points; the critical volume determines two branches of BHs, one near Maxwell behavior and a second one manifestly nonlinear electromagnetic. Moreover, the analysis of the Gibbs free energy indicates that two phase transitions can occur; we also construct the coexistence curve $P$-$T$ where the different phases of the BH can be observed; the critical point is characterized by the standard mean field theory exponents, and the critical variables satisfy $P_{\rm crit} v_{\rm crit}/ T_{\rm crit} = 3/8 $ plus terms of the ten thousandths order in the Euler-Heisenberg parameter $a$

Aspects of the BTZ black hole interacting with fields

We show that there is no superradiance for the Dirac field in the rotating BTZ black hole if the field vanishes at infinity. Then we outline the calculation of the expression for the renormalized energy-momentum tensor, the effective action as well as the heat kernel for the Dirac field for the BTZ black hole. Finally we point out how to construct the Hartle-Hawking-Israel state for the real scalar field in the non-rotating BTZ black hole in two and three dimensions.

The region interior to the event horizon of the Regular Hayward Black Hole

The Painlevé-Gullstrand coordinates allow us to explore the interior of the regular Hayward black hole. The behavior of an infalling particle in traversing the Hayward black hole is compared with the one inside the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom singular black holes. When approaching the origin the test particle trajectories present differences depending if the center is regular or singular. The velocities of the infalling test particle into the modified Hayward black hole are analyzed as well. As compared with the normal Hayward, in the modified Hayward black hole the particle moves faster and the surface gravity is smaller.

A possible geometrical origin of the accelerated expansion of the universe

The modified geodetic brane cosmology (MGBC) is tested with observational data. The MGBC is derived from the geodetic brane gravity action corrected by the extrinsic curvature of the braneworld. The density parameter coming from this additional term produces an accelerated expansion of geometrical origin. Subject to the Supernovae Ia, Observable Hubble parameter, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations and Cosmic Microwave Background probes, the obtained fit provides enough evidence in the sense that the extrinsic curvature effect is able to reproduce the accelerated expansion of the universe without need of invoking dark energy, exotic matter or cosmological constant. Moreover the MGBC is free of the problems present in other braneworld models.

On the NUT-Born-Infeld-$Λ$ spacetime

The stationary axisymmetric spacetime coupled to nonlinear Born-Infeld electrodynamics is studied. The solution was derived by Plebanski et al (1984) and it is characterized by six free parameters: mass, NUT charge, electric and magnetic charge, Born-Infeld parameter and cosmological constant. The geodesic and Lorentz force equations are integrated, and a qualitative analysis of the effect of varying the parameters in the effective potential is provided. Then the light and charged particle trajectories are discussed. The conditions that determine an extreme black hole are presented as well.

Parameter estimation of a nonlinear magnetic universe from observations

The cosmological model consisting of a nonlinear magnetic field obeying the Lagrangian L= γF^α, F being the electromagnetic invariant, coupled to a Robertson-Walker geometry is tested with observational data of Type Ia Supernovae, Long Gamma-Ray Bursts and Hubble parameter measurements. The statistical analysis show that the inclusion of nonlinear electromagnetic matter is enough to produce the observed accelerated expansion, with not need of including a dark energy component. The electromagnetic matter with abundance $Ω_B$, gives as best fit from the combination of all observational data sets Ω_B=0.562^{+0.037}_{-0.038} for the scenario in which α=-1, Ω_B=0.654^{+0.040}_{-0.040} for the scenario with α=-1/4 and Ω_B=0.683^{+0.039}_{-0.043} for the one with α=-1/8. These results indicate that nonlinear electromagnetic matter could play the role of dark energy, with the theoretical advantage of being a mensurable field.

On the stability of black holes with nonlinear electromagnetic fields

The stability of three static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions with nonlinear electromagnetism as a source is investigated in three different ways. We show that the specific heat of all the solutions displays an infinite discontinuity with a change of sign, but the turning point method indicates that the solutions are thermodynamically stable (much in the same way as in the case of the Reissner-Nordstrom geometry). We also show that the black holes analyzed here are dynamically stable, thus suggesting that there may be a relation between thermodynamical and dynamical stability for nonvacuum black holes.

Observational constraints from SNe Ia and Gamma-Ray Bursts on a clumpy universe

The luminosity distance describing the effect of local inhomogeneities in the propagation of light proposed by Zeldovich-Kantowski-Dyer-Roeder (ZKDR) is tested with two probes for two distinct ranges of redshifts: supernovae Ia (SNe Ia) in 0.015 < z < 1.414 and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in 1.547 < z < 3.57. Our analysis is performed by a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) code that allows us to constrain the matter density parameter Ω_m as well as the smoothness parameter $α$ that measures the inhomogeneous-homogeneous rate of the cosmic fluid in a flat \LambdaCDM model. The obtained best fits are (Ω_m=0.285^{+0.019}_{-0.018}, α= 0.856^{+0.106}_{-0.176}) from SNe Ia and (Ω_m=0.259^{+0.028}_{-0.028}, α=0.587^{+0.201}_{-0.202}) from GRBs, while from the joint analysis the best fits are (Ω_m=0.284^{+0.021}_{-0.020}, α= 0.685^{+0.164}_{-0.171}) with a χ^2_{\rm red}=0.975. The value of the smoothness parameter $α$ indicates a clumped universe however it does not have an impact on the amount of dark energy (cosmological constant) needed to fit observations. This result may be an indication that the Dyer-Roeder approximation does not describe in a precise form the effects of clumpiness in the expansion of the universe.

Observational constraints on electromagnetic Born-Infeld cosmology

The cosmological model consisting of an electromagnetic Born-Infeld (BI) field coupled to a Robertson-Walker geometry is tested with the standard probes of SNIa, GRBs and direct Hubble parameter. The analysis shows that the inclusion of the nonlinear electromagnetic component does not contribute in a significative way to the observed expansion. The BI electromagnetic matter is considered with an abundance of $Ω_{BI}$, that our best fit leads to $Ω_{BI}=0.037$ when tested with SNIa and the Hubble parameter data (0.1<z<1.75); while when tested with GRBs the result is of $Ω_{BI}=0.304$, which may indicate that this electrodynamics was important at epochs close to the appearance of large structure (redshifts of approximately 7), although this late result has not as much reliability as that corresponding to the first two probes, since we know that the dispersion in GRBs data is still considerable. In view of these results we can rule out the electromagnetic Born-Infeld matter as the origin of the present accelerated expansion, this conclusion concerns exclusively the Born-Infeld theory.

Testing a DBI model for the unification of dark matter and dark energy with Gamma-Ray Bursts

We study the range of consistency of a model based on a nonlinear scalar field Dirac-Born-Infeld action for the unification of dark matter and dark energy using Gamma-Ray Bursts at high-redshifts. We use the sample of 59 high-redshift GRBs reported by Wei (2010), calibrated at low redshifts with the Union 2 sample of SNe Ia, thus avoiding the circularity problem. In this analysis, we also include the CMB7-year data and the baryonic acoustic peak BAO. Besides, it is calculated the parameter of the equation of state $w$, the deceleration parameter $q_0$ and the redshift of the transition to the decelerate-accelerated phase $z_t$.
