On weak commutativity between $n$ isomorphic groups, $n \geq 2$

The Weak Commutativity Group was defined by the first author in the early 1980's as $ χ(H) = \langle H, H^ψ\mid [h,h^ψ] = 1, \ \forall h \in H \rangle $ where $H$ and $H^ψ$ are isomorphic groups under an isomorphism $ψ$, and proved that $χ(-)$, seen as a group operator, preserved the classes of solvable groups, finite groups, finite $p$-groups, and perfect groups. The list has grown considerably since then (see references). It is clear that the iterated operator $χ^n (-)$ also preserves the same classes. However, we observe that for $n \geq 2$ many of the $2^n$ $H$-generating copies of $χ^n (H)$ fail to weakly commute among themselves. We introduce in this paper the "$n$-ary Weak Commutativity Group" generated by $n$ copies of $H$ which weakly commute among themselves; that is $ χ_n (H) = \langle H, H^ψ, \dots, H^{ψ_{n-1}} \mid [h^{ψ_i}, h^{ψ_j}] = 1, \ \forall h \in H, \ 0 \leq i < j \leq n-1 \rangle $ (by definition, $H^{ψ_0} = H, H^{ψ_1} = H^ψ$). We study quotients of $χ^n (H)$ which are also simultaneously quotients of $χ_{2^n} (H)$; we refer to them as Hybrid $χ^n (H)$ - $χ_{2^n} (H)$ groups. For $n=2$ we determine the largest common quotient $Q(H)$ of $χ^2(H)$ and $χ_4(H)$, that is, the largest hybrid $χ^2(H)$-$χ_4(H)$ group. A related class of groups in our study is $χ(n,H)$, a quotient of $χ_n(H)$, previously introduced by the third named author in his 2007 doctoral thesis. We prove that this class of groups continues to preserve finiteness, nilpotency and perfectness, and we provide detailed information about their structure. In contrast, $χ_n(H)$ behaves differently: $χ_3(C_2 \times C_2)$ is infinite, while $χ_3(C_{p^t} \times C_{p^u})$ is finite for $p$ odd.

Twisted Bracelets for Sorting by Transpositions: the Transposition Diameter of $S_{16}$

Sorting By Transpositions (SBT) seeks the minimum number of transpositions required to sort a permutation $π$ on $n$ symbols into the identity $ι$. Let $N=n+1$. A cyclic-target pair $(ω,β)$ consists of an even permutation $ω$ and an $N$-cycle $β$ for which $ρ=ωβ$ is an $N$-cycle. An SBT instance is the special case $(\barι{\barπ}^{-1},\barπ)$, where $\barπ$ and $\barι$ encode $π$ and $ι$, and $\barι{\barπ}^{-1}\barπ=\barι$. For a prescribed fixed-point-free cycle type, fixed-content words encode $ω$, with colors distinguishing cycles and ranks recording their orientations relative to $β$. A word is realizable exactly when $ρ=ωβ$ is an $N$-cycle. Permutations of equal-part colors and shifts of rank origins form auxiliary symmetries that, together with word rotation and position reflection coupled to rank inversion, define a twisted dihedral action. Its orbits are twisted bracelets, and its realizable orbits correspond bijectively to extended-toric equivalence classes of cyclic-target pairs, where reflection is adjoined to classical toric equivalence. The correspondence yields a Burnside identity, and our method generates one encoding word for each such class. The transposition diameter $TD(n)$ is the largest transposition distance in $S_n$. Combining fixed-point contraction and reductions of the ambient instance space based on cycle structure with exhaustive verification of every remaining twisted bracelet, we prove $TD(16)=9$, closing a twenty-five-year gap. This result also yields $TD(19)=11$ and, for every $n\equiv1\pmod{3}$ with $n\geq16$, $TD(n)\leq\left\lfloor(2n-2)/3\right\rfloor-1$, improving the previous general upper bound by one for these $n$.

Some Structural and Closure Properties of an Extension of the $q$-tensor Product of Groups, $q \geq 0$

In this work we study some structural properties of the group $η^q(G, H)$, $q$ a non-negative integer, which is an extension of the $q$-tensor product $G \otimes^q H)$, where $G$ and $H$ are normal subgroups of some group $L$. We establish by simple arguments some closure properties of $η^q(G,H)$ when $G$ and $H$ belong to certain Schur classes. This extends similar results concerning the case $q = 0$ found in the literature. Restricting our considerations to the case $G = H$, we compute the $q$-tensor square $D_n \otimes^q D_n$ for $q$ odd, where $D_n$ denotes the dihedral group of order $2n$. Upper bounds to the exponent of $G \otimes^q G$ are also established for nilpotent groups $G$ of class $\leq 3$, which extend to all $q \geq 0$ similar bound found by Moravec in [21].

Finiteness of homotopy groups related to the non-abelian tensor product

By using finiteness related result of non-abelian tensor product we prove finiteness conditions for the homotopy groups $π_n(X)$ in terms of the number of tensors. In particular, we establish a quantitative version of the classical Blakers-Massey triad connectivity theorem. Moreover, we study others finiteness conditions and equivalence properties that arise from the non-abelian tensor square. In the end, we give applications to homotopy pushout, especially in the case of Eilenberg-MacLane spaces.

The order of the non-abelian tensor product of groups

Let $G$ and $H$ be groups that act compatibly on each other. We denote by $[G,H]$ the derivative subgroup of $G$ under $H$. We prove that if the set $\{g^{-1}g^h \mid g \in G, h \in H\}$ has $m$ elements, then the derivative $[G,H]$ is finite with $m$-bounded order. Moreover, we show that if the set of all tensors $T_{\otimes}(G,H) = \{g\otimes h \mid g \in G, h\in H\}$ has $m$ elements, then the non-abelian tensor product $G \otimes H$ is finite with $m$-bounded order. We also examine some finiteness conditions for the non-abelian tensor square of groups.

Non-abelian tensor product of residually finite groups

Let $G$ and $H$ be groups that act compatibly on each other. We denote by $η(G,H)$ a certain extension of the non-abelian tensor product $G \otimes H$ by $G \times H$. Suppose that $G$ is residually finite and the subgroup $[G,H] = \langle g^{-1}g^h \ \mid g \in G, h\in H\rangle$ satisfies some non-trivial identity $f \equiv~1$. We prove that if $p$ is a prime and every tensor has $p$-power order, then the non-abelian tensor product $G \otimes H$ is locally finite. Further, we show that if $n$ is a positive integer and every tensor is left $n$-Engel in $η(G,H)$, then the non-abelian tensor product $G \otimes H$ is locally nilpotent. The content of this paper extend some results concerning the non-abelian tensor square $G \otimes G$.

Finiteness conditions for the non-abelian tensor product of groups

Let $G$, $H$ be groups. We denote by $η(G,H)$ a certain extension of the non-abelian tensor product $G \otimes H$ by $G \times H$. We prove that if $G$ and $H$ are groups that act compatibly on each other and such that the set of all tensors $T_{\otimes}(G,H)=\{g\otimes h \, : \, g \in G, \, h\in H\}$ is finite, then the non-abelian tensor product $G \otimes H$ is finite. In the opposite direction we examine certain finiteness conditions of $G$ in terms of similar conditions for the tensor square $G \otimes G$.

Q-tensor square of finitely generated nilpotent groups, q >= 0

The authors extend to the $q-$tensor square $G \otimes^q G$ of a group $G$, $q$ a non-negative integer, some structural results due to R. D. Blyth, F. Fumagalli and M. Morigi concerning the non-abelian tensor square $G \otimes G$ ($q = 0$). The results are applied to the computation of $G \otimes^q G$ for finitely generated nilpotent groups $G$, specially for free nilpotent groups of finite rank. They also generalize to all $q \geq 0$ results of M. Bacon regarding an upper bound to the minimal number of generators of the non-abelian tensor square $G \otimes G$ when $G$ is a $n-$generator nilpotent group of class 2. The paper ends with the computation of the $q-$tensor squares of the free $n-$generator nilpotent group of class 2, $n \geq 2$, for all $q \geq 0.$ This shows that the above mentioned upper bound is also achieved for these groups when $q > 1.$
