A test for Gaussianity in Hilbert spaces via the empirical characteristic functional

Let $X_1,X_2, \ldots$ be independent and identically distributed random elements taking values in a separable Hilbert space $\mathbb{H}$. With applications for functional data in mind, $\mathbb{H}$ may be regarded as a space of square-integrable functions, defined on a compact interval. We propose and study a novel test of the hypothesis $H_0$ that $X_1$ has some unspecified non-degenerate Gaussian distribution. The test statistic $T_n=T_n(X_1,\ldots,X_n)$ is based on a measure of deviation between the empirical characteristic functional of $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ and the characteristic functional of a suitable Gaussian random element of $\mathbb{H}$. We derive the asymptotic distribution of $T_n$ as $n \to \infty$ under $H_0$ and provide a consistent bootstrap approximation thereof. Moreover, we obtain an almost sure limit of $T_n$ as well as a normal limit distribution of $T_n$ under alternatives to Gaussianity. Simulations show that the new test is competitive with respect to the hitherto few competitors available.

Testing multivariate normality by zeros of the harmonic oscillator in characteristic function spaces

We study a novel class of affine invariant and consistent tests for normality in any dimension. The tests are based on a characterization of the standard $d$-variate normal distribution as the unique solution of an initial value problem of a partial differential equation motivated by the harmonic oscillator, which is a special case of a Schrödinger operator. We derive the asymptotic distribution of the test statistics under the hypothesis of normality as well as under fixed and contiguous alternatives. The tests are consistent against general alternatives, exhibit strong power performance for finite samples, and they are applied to a classical data set due to R.A. Fisher. The results can also be used for a neighborhood-of-model validation procedure.

Testing for normality in any dimension based on a partial differential equation involving the moment generating function

We use a system of first-order partial differential equations that characterize the moment generating function of the $d$-variate standard normal distribution to construct a class of affine invariant tests for normality in any dimension. We derive the limit null distribution of the resulting test statistics, and we prove consistency of the tests against general alternatives. In the case $d > 1$, a certain limit of these tests is connected with two measures of multivariate skewness. The new tests show strong power performance when compared to well-known competitors, especially against heavy-tailed distributions, and they are illustrated by means of a real data set.

The limit distribution of the maximum probability nearest neighbor ball

Let $X_1, \ldots, X_n$ be independent random points drawn from an absolutely continuous probability measure with density $f$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Under mild conditions on $f$, we derive a Poisson limit theorem for the number of large probability nearest neighbor balls. Denoting by $P_n$ the maximum probability measure of nearest neighbor balls, this limit theorem implies a Gumbel extreme value distribution for $nP_n - \ln n$ as $n \to \infty$. Moreover, we derive a tight upper bound on the upper tail of the distribution of $nP_n - \ln n$, which does not depend on $f$.

Absent-minded passengers

Passengers board a fully booked airplane in order. The first passenger picks one of the seats at random. Each subsequent passenger takes his or her assigned seat if available, otherwise takes one of the remaining seats at random. It is well known that the last passenger obtains her own seat with probability $1/2$. We study the distribution of the number of incorrectly seated passengers, and we also discuss the case of several absent-minded passengers.

More good news on the (only) affine invariant test for multivariate reflected symmetry about an unknown center

We revisit the problem of testing for multivariate reflected symmetry about an unspecified point. Although this testing problem is invariant with respect to full-rank affine transformations, among the hitherto few proposed tests only the test studied in [12] respects this property. We identify a measure of deviation $Δ$ (say) from symmetry associated with the test statistic $T_n$ (say), and we obtain the limit normal distribution of $T_n$ as $n \to \infty$ under a fixed alternative to symmetry. Since a consistent estimator of the variance of this limit normal distribution is available, we obtain an asymptotic confidence interval for $Δ$. The test, when applied to a classical data set, strongly rejects the hypothesis of reflected symmetry, although other tests even do not object against the much stronger hypothesis of elliptical symmetry.

A new class of tests for multinormality with i.i.d. and Garch data based on the empirical moment generating function

We generalize a recent class of tests for univariate normality that are based on the empirical moment generating function to the multivariate setting, thus obtaining a class of affine invariant, consistent and easy-to-use goodness-of-fit tests for multinormality. The test statistics are suitably weighted $L^2$-statistics, and we provide their asymptotic behavior both for i.i.d. observations as well as in the context of testing that the innovation distribution of a multivariate GARCH model is Gaussian. We study the finite-sample behavior of the new tests, compare the criteria with alternative existing procedures, and apply the new procedure to a data set of monthly log returns.

Goodness-of-fit tests for complete spatial randomness based on Minkowski functionals of binary images

We propose a class of goodness-of-fit tests for complete spatial randomness (CSR). In contrast to standard tests, our procedure utilizes a transformation of the data to a binary image, which is then characterized by geometric functionals. Under a suitable limiting regime, we derive the asymptotic distribution of the test statistics under the null hypothesis and almost sure limits under certain alternatives. The new tests are computationally efficient, and simulations show that they are strong competitors to other tests of CSR. The tests are applied to a real data set in gamma-ray astronomy, and immediate extensions are presented to encourage further work.

On the consistency of the spacings test for multivariate uniformity

We give a simple conceptual proof of the consistency of a test for multivariate uniformity in a bounded set $K \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ that is based on the maximal spacing generated by i.i.d. points $X_1, \ldots,X_n$ in $K$, i.e., the volume of the largest convex set of a given shape that is contained in $K$ and avoids each of these points. Since asymptotic results for the case $d > 1$ are only availabe under uniformity, a key element of the proof is a suitable coupling.

Characterizations of multinormality and corresponding tests of fit, including for Garch models

We provide novel characterizations of multivariate normality that incorporate both the characteristic function and the moment generating function, and we employ these results to construct a class of affine invariant, consistent and easy-to-use goodness-of-fit tests for normality. The test statistics are suitably weighted $L^2$-statistics, and we provide their asymptotic behavior both for i.i.d. observations as well as in the context of testing that the innovation distribution of a multivariate GARCH model is Gaussian. We also study the finite-sample behavior of the new tests and compare the new criteria with alternative existing tests.

Multivariate goodness-of-fit on flat and curved spaces via nearest neighbor distances

We present a unified approach to goodness-of-fit testing in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and on lower-dimensional manifolds embedded in $\mathbb{R}^d$ based on sums of powers of weighted volumes of $k$-th nearest neighbor spheres. We prove asymptotic normality of a class of test statistics under the null hypothesis and under fixed alternatives. Under such alternatives, scaled versions of the test statistics converge to the $α$-entropy between probability distributions. A simulation study shows that the procedures are serious competitors to established goodness-of-fit tests.
