Dissipative solitons in forced cyclic and symmetric structures

The emergence of localised vibrations in cyclic and symmetric rotating structures, such as bladed disks of aircraft engines, has challenged engineers in the past few decades. In the linear regime, localised states may arise due to a lack of symmetry, as for example induced by inhomogeneities. However, when structures deviate from the linear behaviour, e.g. due to material nonlinearities, geometric nonlinearities like large deformations, or other nonlinear elements like joints or friction interfaces, localised states may arise even in perfectly symmetric structures. In this paper, a system consisting of coupled Duffing oscillators with linear viscous damping is subjected to external travelling wave forcing. The system may be considered a minimal model for bladed disks in turbomachinery operating in the nonlinear regime, where such excitation may arise due to imbalance or aerodynamic excitation. We demonstrate that near the resonance, in this non-conservative regime, localised vibration states bifurcate from the travelling waves. Complex bifurcation diagrams result, comprising stable and unstable dissipative solitons. The localised solutions can also be continued numerically to a conservative limit, where solitons bifurcate from the backbone curves of the travelling waves at finite amplitudes.

On the essential dimension of coherent sheaves

We characterize all fields of definition for a given coherent sheaf over a projective scheme in terms of projective modules over a finite-dimensional endomorphism algebra. This yields general results on the essential dimension of such sheaves. Applying them to vector bundles over a smooth projective curve C, we obtain an upper bound for the essential dimension of their moduli stack. The upper bound is sharp if the conjecture of Colliot-Thélène, Karpenko and Merkurjev holds. We find that the genericity property proved for Deligne-Mumford stacks by Brosnan, Reichstein and Vistoli still holds for this Artin stack, unless the curve C is elliptic.

The Picard group of a coarse moduli space of vector bundles in positive characteristic

Let C be a smooth projective curve over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. Let M_{r,L}^{ss} denote the projective coarse moduli scheme of semistable rank r vector bundles over C with fixed determinant L. We prove Pic(M_{r,L}^{ss}) = Z, identify the ample generator, and deduce that M_{r,L}^{ss} is locally factorial. In characteristic zero, this has already been proved by Drézet and Narasimhan. The main point of the present note is to circumvent the usual problems with Geometric Invariant Theory in positive caracteristic.

Torelli theorem for the Deligne--Hitchin moduli space, II

Let X and X' be compact Riemann surfaces of genus at least three. Let G and G' be nontrivial connected semisimple linear algebraic groups over C. If some components $M_{DH}^d(X,G)$ and $M_{DH}^{d'}(X',G')$ of the associated Deligne--Hitchin moduli spaces are biholomorphic, then X' is isomorphic to X or to the conjugate Riemann surface $\bar{X}$.

New Examples of Stable Bundles on Calabi-Yau Threefolds

In this paper we present a construction of stable bundles on Calabi-Yau threefolds using the method of bundle extensions. This construction applies to any given Calabi-Yau threefold with h^{1,1}>1. We give examples of stable bundles of rank 2 and 4 constructed out of pure geometric data of the given Calabi-Yau space. As an application, we find that some of these bundles satisfy the physical constraint imposed by heterotic string anomaly cancellation.

SU(5) Heterotic Standard Model Bundles

We construct a class of stable SU(5) bundles on an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold with two sections, a variant of the ordinary Weierstrass fibration, which admits a free involution. The bundles are invariant under the involution, solve the topological constraint imposed by the heterotic anomaly equation and give three generations of Standard Model fermions after symmetry breaking by Wilson lines of the intermediate SU(5) GUT-group to the Standard Model gauge group. Among the solutions we find some which can be perturbed to solutions of the Strominger system. Thus these solutions provide a step toward the construction of phenomenologically realistic heterotic flux compactifications via non-Kahler deformations of Calabi-Yau geometries with bundles. This particular class of solutions involves a rank two hidden sector bundle and does not require background fivebranes for anomaly cancellation.

Independent parameters for special instanton bundles on P^{2n+1}

Motivated by Yang-Mills theory in 4n dimensions, and generalizing the notion due to Atiyah, Drinfeld, Hitchin and Manin for n=1, Okonek, Spindler and Trautmann introduced instanton bundles and special instanton bundles as certain algebraic vector bundles of rank 2n on the complex projective space P^{2n+1}. The moduli space of special instanton bundles is shown to be rational.

A Torelli theorem for moduli spaces of principal bundles over a curve

Let X and X' be compact Riemann surfaces of genus at least 3, and let G and G' be nonabelian reductive complex groups. If one component M_G^d(X) of the moduli space for semistable principal G-bundles over X is isomorphic to another component M_{G'}^{d'}(X'), then X is isomorphic to X'.

Einstein-Hermitian connection on twisted Higgs bundles

Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over $\mathbb C$. We prove that a twisted Higgs vector bundle $(\calE\, ,θ)$ on $X$ admits an Einstein--Hermitian connection if and only if $(\calE\, ,θ)$ is polystable. A similar result for twisted vector bundles (no Higgs fields) was proved by S. Wang in \cite{Wa}. Our approach is simpler.

Poincaré families of G-bundles on a curve

Let G be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field k. Consider the moduli space of stable principal G-bundles on a smooth projective curve C over k. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of Poincaré bundles over open subsets of this moduli space, and compute the orders of the corresponding obstruction classes. This generalizes the previous results of Newstead, Ramanan and Balaji-Biswas-Nagaraj-Newstead to all reductive groups, to all topological types of bundles, and also to all characteristics.

Torelli theorem for the Deligne--Hitchin moduli space

Fix integers $g\geq 3$ and $r\geq 2$, with $r\geq 3$ if $g=3$. Given a compact connected Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g$, let $\MDH(X)$ denote the corresponding $\text{SL}(r, {\mathbb C})$ Deligne--Hitchin moduli space. We prove that the complex analytic space $\MDH(X)$ determines (up to an isomorphism) the unordered pair $\{X, \overline{X}\}$, where $\overline{X}$ is the Riemann surface defined by the opposite almost complex structure on $X$.

Some moduli stacks of symplectic bundles on a curve are rational

Let C be a smooth projective curve of genus at least 2 over a field k. Given a line bundle L on C, we consider the moduli stack of rank 2n vector bundles E on C endowed with a nowhere degenerate symplectic form $b: E \otimes E \to L$ up to scalars. We prove that this stack is birational to BG_m times an affine space A^s if n and the degree of L are both odd and C admits a k-rational point as well as a line bundle of degree 0 whose square is nontrivial. It follows that the corresponding coarse moduli scheme is rational in this case.

Rationality and Poincare families for vector bundles with extra structure on a curve

Iterated Grassmannian bundles over moduli stacks of vector bundles on a curve are shown to be birational to an affine space times a moduli stack of degree 0 vector bundles, following the method of King and Schofield. Applications include the birational type of some Brill-Noether loci, of moduli schemes for vector bundles with parabolic structure or with level structure and for A. Schmitt's decorated vector bundles. A further consequence concerns the existence of Poincare families on finite coverings of the moduli schemes.

Homological algebra with locally compact abelian groups

In this article we study locally compact abelian (LCA) groups from the viewpoint of derived categories, using that their category is quasi-abelian in the sense of J.-P. Schneiders. We define a well-behaved derived Hom-complex with values in the derived category of Hausdorff topological abelian groups. Furthermore we introduce a smallness condition for LCA groups and show that such groups have a natural tensor product and internal Hom which both admit derived versions.
