Continuity of the integrated density of states on random length metric graphs

We establish several properties of the integrated density of states for random quantum graphs: Under appropriate ergodicity and amenability assumptions, the integrated density of states can be defined using an exhaustion procedure by compact subgraphs. A trace per unit volume formula holds, similarly as in the Euclidean case. Our setting includes periodic graphs. For a model where the edge length are random and vary independently in a smooth way we prove a Wegner estimate and related regularity results for the integrated density of states. These results are illustrated for an example based on the Kagome lattice. In the periodic case we characterise all compactly supported eigenfunctions and calculate the position and size of discontinuities of the integrated density of states.

Cayley Graph Expanders and Groups of Finite Width

We present new infinite families of expander graphs of vertex degree 4, which is the minimal possible degree for Cayley graph expanders. Our first family defines a tower of coverings (with covering indices equals 2) and our second family is given as Cayley graphs of finite groups with very short presentations with only 2 generators and 4 relations. Both families are based on particular finite quotients of a group G of infinite upper triangular matrices over the ring M(3,F2). We present explicit vector space bases for the finite abelian quotients of the lower exponent-2 groups of G by upper triangular subgroups and prove a particular 3-periodicity of these quotients. The pro-2 completion of the group G satisfies the Golod-Shafarevich inequality $|R| \geq (|X|^2)/4$, it is infinite, not p-adic analytic, contains a free nonabelian subgroup, but not a free pro-p group. We also conjecture that the group G has finite width 3 and finite average width 8/3.

Continuity properties of the integrated density of states on manifolds

We first analyze the integrated density of states (IDS) of periodic Schrödinger operators on an amenable covering manifold. A criterion for the continuity of the IDS at a prescribed energy is given along with examples of operators with both continuous and discontinuous IDS'. Subsequently, alloy-type perturbations of the periodic operator are considered. The randomness may enter both via the potential and the metric. A Wegner estimate is proven which implies the continuity of the corresponding IDS. This gives an example of a discontinuous "periodic" IDS which is regularized by a random perturbation.

Geometric heat comparison criteria for Riemannian manifolds

The main results of this article are small time heat comparison results for two points in two manifolds with characteristic functions as initial temperature distributions (Theorems 1 and 2). These results are based on the geometric concepts of (essential) distance from the complement and spherical area function. We also discuss some other geometric results about the heat development and illustrate them by examples.

Random Schr"odinger operators on manifolds

We consider a random family of Schrödinger operators on a cover $X$ of a compact Riemannian manifold $M = X/Γ$. We present several results on their spectral theory, in particular almost sure constancy of the spectral components and existence and non-randomness of an integrated density of states. We also sketch a groupoid based general framework which allows to treat basic features of random operators in different contexts in a unified way. Further topics of research are also discussed.

Integrated density of states for random metrics on manifolds

We study ergodic random Schr"odinger operators on a covering manifold, where the randomness enters both via the potential and the metric. We prove measurability of the random operators, almost sure constancy of their spectral properties, the existence of a selfaveraging integrated density of states and a Šubin type trace formula.

On index formulas for manifolds with metric horns

In this paper we discuss the index problem for geometric differential operators (Spin-Dirac operator, Gauß-Bonnet operator, Signature operator) on manifolds with metric horns. On singular manifolds these operators in general do not have unique closed extensions. But there always exist two extremal extensions $D_{min}$ and $D_{max}$. We describe the quotient ${\cal D}(D_{max}) / {\cal D}(D_{min})$ explicitely in geometric resp. topologic terms of the base manifolds of the metric horns. We derive index formulas for the Spin-Dirac and Gauß-Bonnet operator. For the Signature operator we present a partial result. The first version of this paper was completed August 1995 at the University of Augsburg.
