Charged Particle-like Branes in ABJM: A Summary

We study the effect of adding lower dimensional brane charges to the 't Hooft monopole, di-baryon and baryon vertex configurations in AdS_4 x CP^3. We show that these configurations capture the background fluxes in a way that depends on the induced charges, requiring additional fundamental strings to cancel the worldvolume tadpoles. The dynamics reveal that the charges must lie inside some interval, a situation familiar from the baryon vertex in AdS_5 x S^5 with charges. For the baryon vertex and the di-baryon the number of fundamental strings must also lie inside an allowed interval. Some ideas about the existence of these bounds in relation to the stringy exclusion principle are given.

Charged particle-like branes in ABJM

We study the effect of adding lower dimensional brane charges to the 't Hooft monopole, di-baryon and baryon vertex configurations in $AdS_4 \times \mathbb{P}^3$. We show that these configurations capture the background fluxes in a way that depends on the induced charges, and therefore, require additional fundamental strings in order to cancel the worldvolume tadpoles. The study of the dynamics reveals that the charges must lie inside some interval in order to find well defined configurations, a situation familiar from the baryon vertex in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ with charges. For the baryon vertex and the di-baryon the number of fundamental strings must also lie inside an allowed interval. Our configurations are sensitive to the flat $B$-field recently suggested in the literature. We make some comments on its possible role. We also discuss how these configurations are modified in the presence of a non-zero Romans mass.

Confinement and non-perturbative tachyons in brane-antibrane systems: A summary

We present a worldvolume effective action suitable for the study of the confined phase of a (Dp,anti-Dp) system at weak coupling, and we identify the mechanism by which the fundamental string arises from this action when the Dp and the anti-Dp annihilate. We construct an explicit dual action, appropriate for the strong coupling regime, which realizes a generalized Higgs-Stueckelberg phase for the (relative) (p-2)-form dual to the (overall) BI vector, the mechanism put forward by Yi and collaborators for realizing non-perturbatively the breaking of the overall U(1) gauge group. Our results provide an explicit realization of the perturbative breaking of the overall U(1) in a way that is consistent with the duality symmetries of String Theory.

Confinement and Non-perturbative Tachyons in Brane-Antibrane Systems

We present a worldvolume effective action suitable for the study of the confined phase of a Dp-anti-Dp system at weak coupling. We identify the mechanism by which the fundamental string arises from this action as a confined electric flux string when the Dp and the anti-Dp annihilate. We construct an explicit dual action, more suitable for the study of the strong coupling regime, and show that it realizes a generalized Higgs-Stueckelberg phase for the (relative) (p-2)-form field dual to the (overall) BI vector. This is the mechanism put forward by Yi and collaborators based on duality arguments in order to explain the breaking of the overall U(1) gauge group at strong coupling. Indeed, in our dual description the Goldstone boson is a (p-3)-form magnetically charged with respect to the overall BI vector field. This indicates that the condensing tachyonic objects originate from open D(p-2)-branes stretched between the brane and the anti-brane. Our results provide an explicit realization of the breaking of the overall U(1) gauge group perturbatively, in a way consistent with the duality symmetries of String Theory.
