Multipartite information in sparse SYK models

In quantum field theories that admit gravity dual, specific inequalities involving entanglement entropy between arbitrary disjoint spatial regions hold. An example is the negativity of tripartite information. Inspired by this, we investigate the analogous entropy inequalities in Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) and sparse SYK models, which involve the entanglement among different flavors of Majorana fermions rather than spatial entanglement. Sparse SYK models are models where some of the SYK couplings are set to zero. Since these models have been argued to admit gravity duals up to a certain sparseness, it is interesting to see whether the multipartite entanglement structure changes in a sparseness-dependent manner. In the parameter space explored by our numerical analysis, which we performed upto five parties, we find that all entropy inequalities are satisfied for any temperature and degree of sparseness for an arbitrary choice of flavor subregions. In addition, if we plot the multipartite entanglement entropy in terms of purity, the only significant effect of sparseness is to change the range of purity. Thus, we conclude that multipartite information is almost unaffected by sparseness. As a counterexample, we also show that in a vector model of $N$-flavored Majorana fermions which contains no random variables, choices of subregions exist for which the entropy inequalities are violated.

Logarithmic singularities of Renyi entropy as a sign of chaos?

We propose that the logarithmic singularities of the Renyi entropy of local-operator-excited states for replica index $n$ can be a sign of quantum chaos. As concrete examples, we analyze the logarithmic singularities of the Renyi entropy in various two-dimensional conformal field theories. We show that there are always logarithmic singularities of the Renyi entropy in holographic CFTs, but no such singularities in free and rational CFTs. These singularities of the Renyi entropy are also related to the logarithmic time growth of the Renyi entropy at late times.

Out-of-time-ordered correlators in the IP matrix model

We study the out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs) in the IP matrix model. It was shown in arXiv:1602.06422 that OTOCs do not grow when the adjoint is massless. We generalize the analysis of OTOCs to general nonzero masses $m > 0$ for the adjoint, where we give a new prescription for analytic continuation in time such that we can evaluate OTOCs numerically using the retarded Green function. Despite the fact that the behaviors of the two-point functions, spectral density, and the Krylov complexity change drastically depending on whether the adjoint is massless or not, in the parameter ranges we study, we do not see the exponential growth of OTOCs for the massive adjoint cases. We end with a discussion of the comparison of this model with the SYK model and possible modification of the model.

Krylov complexity as an order parameter for deconfinement phase transitions at large $N$

Krylov complexity has been proposed as a diagnostic of chaos in non-integrable lattice and quantum mechanical systems, and if the system is chaotic, Krylov complexity grows exponentially with time. However, when Krylov complexity is applied to quantum field theories, even in free theory, it grows exponentially with time. This exponential growth in free theory is simply due to continuous momentum in non-compact space and has nothing to do with the mass spectrum of theories. Thus by compactifying space sufficiently, exponential growth of Krylov complexity due to continuous momentum can be avoided. In this paper, we propose that the Krylov complexity of operators such as $\mathcal{O}=\textrm{Tr}[F_{μν}F^{μν}]$ can be an order parameter of confinement/deconfinement transitions in large $N$ quantum field theories on such a compactified space. We explicitly give a prescription of the compactification at finite temperature to distinguish the continuity of spectrum due to momentum and mass spectrum. We then calculate the Krylov complexity of $\mathcal{N}=4, 0$ $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theories in the large $N$ limit by using holographic analysis of the spectrum and show that the behavior of Krylov complexity reflects the confinement/deconfinement phase transitions through the continuity of mass spectrum.

Sparse random matrices and Gaussian ensembles with varying randomness

We study a system of $N$ qubits with a random Hamiltonian obtained by drawing coupling constants from Gaussian distributions in various ways. This results in a rich class of systems which include the GUE and the fixed $q$ SYK theories. Our motivation is to understand the system at large $N$. In practice most of our calculations are carried out using exact diagonalisation techniques (up to $N=24$). Starting with the GUE, we study the resulting behaviour as the randomness is decreased. While in general the system goes from being chaotic to being more ordered as the randomness is decreased, the changes in various properties, including the density of states, the spectral form factor, the level statistics and out-of-time-ordered correlators, reveal interesting patterns. Subject to the limitations of our analysis which is mainly numerical, we find some evidence that the behaviour changes in an abrupt manner when the number of non-zero independent terms in the Hamiltonian is exponentially large in $N$. We also study the opposite limit of much reduced randomness obtained in a local version of the SYK model where the number of couplings scales linearly in $N$, and characterise its behaviour. Our investigation suggests that a more complete theoretical analysis of this class of systems will prove quite worthwhile.

Shock waves and delay of hyperfast growth in de Sitter complexity

We study the holographic complexity in de Sitter spacetime, especially how the hyperfast growth of holographic complexity in de Sitter spacetime is affected under a small and early perturbation. The perturbed geometry is de Sitter spacetime with shock waves. We find that the critical time, at which de Sitter holographic complexity diverges, becomes always greater in the presence of the shock waves, which satisfies the averaged null energy conditions. This means that the hyperfast property of de Sitter complexity is delayed by small perturbations.

Krylov complexity in the IP matrix model II

We continue the analysis of the Krylov complexity in the IP matrix model. In a previous paper, for a fundamental operator, it was shown that at zero temperature, the Krylov complexity oscillates and does not grow, but in the infinite temperature limit, the Krylov complexity grows exponentially in time as $\sim \exp\left( {\mathcal{O}\left( {\sqrt{t}}\right)} \right)$. We study how the Krylov complexity changes from a zero-temperature oscillation to an infinite-temperature exponential growth. At low temperatures, the spectral density is approximated as collections of infinite Wigner semicircles. We showed that this infinite collection of branch cuts yields linear growth to the Lanczos coefficients and gives exponential growth of the Krylov complexity. Thus the IP model for any nonzero temperature shows exponential growth for the Krylov complexity even though the Green function decays by a power law in time. We also study the Lanczos coefficients and the Krylov complexity in the IOP matrix model taking into account the $1/N^2$ corrections. There, the Lanczos coefficients are constants and the Krylov complexity does not grow exponentially as expected.

Is Action Complexity better for de Sitter space in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity?

Volume complexity in dS$_2$ remains $O(1)$ up to a critical time, after which it suddenly diverges. On the other hand, for the dS$_2$ solution in JT gravity there is a linear dilaton which smoothly grows towards the future infinity. From the dimensional reduction viewpoint, the growth of the dilaton is due to the expansion of the orthogonal sphere in higher-dimensional dS$_d$ ($d \ge 3$). Since in higher dimensions complexity becomes very large even before the critical time, by properly taking into account the dilaton, the same behavior is expected for complexity in dS$_2$ JT gravity. We show that this expectation is met by complexity = action (CA) conjecture. For this purpose, we obtain an appropriate action for dS$_2$ in JT gravity, by dimensional reduction from dS$_3$. In addition, we discuss complexity = "refined volume" where we choose an appropriate Weyl field-redefinition such that refined volume avoids the discontinuous jump in time evolution.

The local SYK model and its triple scaling limit

We study a model of fermions with random couplings similar to conventional SYK with $N$ number of flavours of fermions, at large $N$. Unlike the conventional SYK model, which has all-to-all couplings, the model we study, which we call local SYK, has a much less number of random couplings, just $N$ in number and with only local interactions. It is shown that there exists a limit in which the local SYK model can be solved using the chord diagram techniques, analogous to the double-scaled limit of conventional SYK. This limit corresponds to taking the size of the fermion coupling terms, $q$, to scale linearly with $N$. A further triple scaling limit is taken to analyze the low energy limit and it is shown that the OTOCs saturate the chaos bound, paralleling the analysis in the conventional SYK.

Late time behavior of $n$-point spectral form factors in Airy and JT gravities

We study the late time behavior of $n$-point spectral form factors (SFFs) in two-dimensional Witten-Kontsevich topological gravity, which includes both Airy and JT gravities as special cases. This is conducted in the small $\hbar$ expansion, where $\hbar \sim e^{- {1}/{G_N}}$ is the genus counting parameter and nonperturbative in Newton's constant $G_N$. For one-point SFF, we study its absolute square at two different late times. We show that it decays by power law at $t \sim \hbar^{-2/3}$ while it decays exponentially at $t \sim \hbar^{-1}$ due to the higher order corrections in $\hbar$. We also study general $n (\ge 2)$-point SFFs at $t \sim \hbar^{-1}$ in the leading order of the $\hbar$ expansion. We find that they are characterized by a single function, which is essentially the connected two-point SFF and is determined by the classical eigenvalue density $ρ_0(E)$ of the dual matrix integral. These studies suggest that qualitative behaviors of $n$-point SFFs are similar in both Airy and JT gravities, where our analysis in the former case is based on exact results.

Flows of Rotating Extremal Attractor Black Holes

We investigate the attractor mechanism of five-dimensional extremal rotating black holes in Einstein gravity minimally coupled with a multiplet complex scalar. By imposing regularity on the horizon, we show that the only possible attractor value of the scalar field is zero in our setup and that the local geometry is determined by the Myers-Perry black hole solution. We numerically obtain the extremal AdS black hole solutions interpolating the near horizon geometry to the asymptotic AdS spacetime under the existence of a bare potential of the scalar field. The black hole energy and the angular momenta are discretized for the usual Dirichlet boundary condition. Under the general boundary condition, we also find hairy extremal AdS black holes in which the energy is smaller than that of the extremal Myers-Perry AdS black hole solution for the same angular momentum.

Krylov complexity in the IP matrix model

The IP matrix model is a simple large $N$ quantum mechanical model made up of an adjoint harmonic oscillator plus a fundamental harmonic oscillator. It is a model introduced previously as a toy model of the gauge theory dual of an AdS black hole. In the large $N$ limit, one can solve the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the fundamental correlator, and at sufficiently high temperature, this model shows key signatures of thermalization and information loss; the correlator decay exponentially in time, and the spectral density becomes continuous and gapless. We study the Lanczos coefficients $b_n$ in this model and at sufficiently high temperature, it grows linearly in $n$ with logarithmic corrections, which is one of the fastest growth under certain conditions. As a result, the Krylov complexity grows exponentially in time as $\sim \exp\left({\cal{O}{\left(\sqrt{t}\right) }}\right)$. These results indicate that the IP model at sufficiently high temperature is chaotic.

Extractable entanglement from a Euclidean hourglass

We previously proposed that entanglement across a planar surface can be obtained from the partition function on a Euclidean hourglass geometry. Here we extend the prescription to spherical entangling surfaces in conformal field theory. We use the prescription to evaluate log terms in the entropy of a CFT in two dimensions, a conformally-coupled scalar in four dimensions, and a Maxwell field in four dimensions. For Maxwell we reproduce the extractable entropy obtained by Soni and Trivedi. We take this as evidence that the hourglass prescription provides a Euclidean technique for evaluating extractable entropy in quantum field theory.

Flows of Extremal Attractor Black Holes

We study flows of non-supersymmetric attractor black holes in the context of gauge/gravity correspondence. As our bulk theory, we consider the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton system with a single dilaton field coupled to two Maxwell fields and make a relevant deformation by adding a bare potential to the dilaton field. We find two types of extremal black hole solutions with attractor mechanism: The one smooth at the horizon and the other non-smooth. We show from both bulk and boundary theory perspective that the former is thermodynamically unstable, while the latter is stable.

A comment on a fine-grained description of evaporating black holes with baby universes

We study a partially fine-grained description of an evaporating black hole by introducing an open baby universe with a boundary. Since the Page's calculation of the entropy of Hawking radiation involves an ensemble average over a class of states, one can formally obtain a fine-grained state by purifying this setup. For AdS black holes with a holographic dual, this purification amounts to introducing an additional boundary (i.e., baby universe) and then connecting it to the original black hole through an Einstein-Rosen bridge. We uncover several details of this setup. As applications, we briefly discuss how this baby universe modifies the semi-classical gravitational Gauss law as well as the gravitational dressing of operators behind the horizon.

Defining entanglement without tensor factoring: a Euclidean hourglass prescription

We consider entanglement across a planar boundary in flat space. Entanglement entropy is usually thought of as the von Neumann entropy of a reduced density matrix, but it can also be thought of as half the von Neumann entropy of a product of reduced density matrices on the left and right. The latter form allows a natural regulator in which two cones are smoothed into a Euclidean hourglass geometry. Since there is no need to tensor-factor the Hilbert space, the regulated entropy is manifestly gauge-invariant and has a manifest state-counting interpretation. We explore this prescription for scalar fields, where the entropy is insensitive to a non-minimal coupling, and for Maxwell fields, which have the same entropy as $d-2$ scalars.

Wormholes and holographic decoherence

We study a class of decoherence process which admits a 3 dimensional holographic bulk. Starting from a thermo-field double dual to a wormhole, we prepare another thermo-field double which plays the role of environment. By allowing the energy flow between the original and environment thermo-field double, the entanglement of the original thermo-field double eventually decoheres. We model this decoherence by four-boundary wormhole geometries, and study the time-evolution of the moduli parameters to see the change of the entanglement pattern among subsystems. A notable feature of this holographic decoherence processes is that at the end point of the processes, the correlations of the original thermo-field double are lost completely both classically and also quantum mechanically. We also discuss distinguishability between thermo-field double state and thermo mixed double state, which contains only classical correlations, and construct a code subspace toy model for that.

The averaged null energy conditions in even dimensional curved spacetimes from AdS/CFT duality

We consider averaged null energy conditions (ANEC) for strongly coupled quantum field theories in even (two and four) dimensional curved spacetimes by applying the no-bulk-shortcut principle in the context of the AdS/CFT duality. In the same context but in odd-dimensions, the present authors previously derived a conformally invariant averaged null energy condition (CANEC), which is a version of the ANEC with a certain weight function for conformal invariance. In even-dimensions, however, one has to deal with gravitational conformal anomalies, which make relevant formulas much more complicated than the odd-dimensional case. In two-dimensions, we derive the ANEC by applying the no-bulk-shortcut principle. In four-dimensions, we derive an inequality which essentially provides the lower-bound for the ANEC with a weight function. For this purpose, and also to get some geometric insights into gravitational conformal anomalies, we express the stress-energy formulas in terms of geometric quantities such as the expansions of boundary null geodesics and a quasi-local mass of the boundary geometry. We argue when the lowest bound is achieved and also discuss when the averaged value of the null energy can be negative, considering a simple example of a spatially compact universe with wormhole throat.
