Periodicity for the 3-state quantum walk on cycles

Dukes (2014) and Konno, Shimizu, and Takei (2017) studied the periodicity for 2-state quantum walks whose coin operator is the Hadamard matrix on cycle graph C_N with N vertices. The present paper treats the periodicity for 3-state quantum walks on C_N. Our results follow from a new method based on cyclotomic field. This method shows a necessary condition for the coin operator of quantum walks to have the finite period. Moreover, we reveal the period T_N of two kinds of typical quantum walks, the Grover and Fourier walks. We prove that both walks do not have any finite period except for N=3, in which case T_3=6 (Grover), =12 (Fourier).

A new time-series model based on quantum walk

The quantum walk (QW) was introduced as a quantum counterpart of the classical random walk. A number of non-classical properties of the QW have been shown, e.g., ballistic spreading, anti-bellshaped limit density, localization. Since around 2000, extensive research has been conducted in both theoretical aspects as well as the practical application of QWs. However, the application of a QW to the time-series analysis is not known. On the other hand, it is well known that the ARMA or GARCH models have been widely used in economics and finance. These models are studied under some suitable stationarity conditions. In this paper, we propose a new time-series model based on the QW, which does not assume such a stationarity. Therefore, our method would be applicable to the non-stationary time series.

Uniform stationary measure of space-inhomogeneous quantum walks in one dimension

The discrete-time quantum walk (QW) is a quantum version of the random walk (RW) and has been widely investigated for the last two decades. Some remarkable properties of QW are well known. For example, QW has a ballistic spreading, i.e., QW is quadratically faster than RW. For some cases, localization occurs: a walker stays at the starting position forever. In this paper, we consider stationary measures of two-state QWs on the line. It was shown that for any space-homogeneous model, the uniform measure becomes the stationary measure. However, the corresponding result for space-inhomogeneous model is not known. Here, we present a class of space-inhomogeneous QWs on the line and cycles in which the uniform measure is stationary. Furthermore, we briefly discuss a difference between QWs and RWs.

Phase measurement of quantum walks: application to structure theorem of the positive support of the Grover walk

We obtain a structure theorem of the positive support of the $n$-th power of the Grover walk on $k$-regular graph whose girth is greater than $2(n-1)$. This structure theorem is provided by the parity of the amplitude of another quantum walk on the line which depends only on $k$. The phase pattern of this quantum walk has a curious regularity. We also exactly show how the spectrum of the $n$-th power of the Grover walk is obtained by lifting up that of the adjacency matrix to the complex plain.

The Fourier and Grover walks on the two-dimensional lattice and torus

In this paper, we consider discrete-time quantum walks with moving shift (MS) and flip-flop shift (FF) on two-dimensional lattice $\mathbb{Z}^2$ and torus $π_N^2=(\mathbb{Z}/N)^2$. Weak limit theorems for the Grover walks on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with MS and FF were given by Watabe et al. and Higuchi et al., respectively. The existence of localization of the Grover walks on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with MS and FF was shown by Inui et al. and Higuchi et al., respectively. Non-existence of localization of the Fourier walk with MS on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ was proved by Komatsu and Tate. Here our simple argument gave non-existence of localization of the Fourier walk with both MS and FF. Moreover we calculate eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors of the $(k_1,k_2)$-space of the Fourier walks on $π_N^2$ with MS and FF for some special initial conditions. The probability distributions are also obtained. Finally, we compute amplitudes of the Grover and Fourier walks on $π_2^2$.

Central limit theorems for open quantum random walks on the crystal lattices

We consider the open quantum random walks on the crystal lattices and investigate the central limit theorems for the walks. On the integer lattices the open quantum random walks satisfy the central limit theorems as was shown by Attal, {\it et al}. In this paper we prove the central limit theorems for the open quantum random walks on the crystal lattices. We then provide with some examples for the Hexagonal lattices. We also develop the Fourier analysis on the crystal lattices. This leads to construct the so called dual processes for the open quantum random walks. It amounts to get Fourier transform of the probability densities, and it is very useful when we compute the characteristic functions of the walks. In this paper we construct the dual processes for the open quantum random walks on the crystal lattices providing with some examples.

Stationary measure for two-state space-inhomogeneous quantum walk in one dimension

We consider the two-state space-inhomogeneous coined quantum walk (QW) in one dimension. For a general setting, we obtain the stationary measure of the QW by solving the eigenvalue problem. As a corollary, stationary measures of the multi-defect model and space-homogeneous QW are derived. The former is a generalization of the previous works on one-defect model and the latter is a generalization of the result given by Konno and Takei (2015).

A spectral analysis of discrete-time quantum walks related to the birth and death chains

In this paper, we consider a spectral analysis of discrete time quantum walks on the path. For isospectral coin cases, we show that the time averaged distribution and stationary distributions of the quantum walks are described by the pair of eigenvalues of the coins as well as the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the corresponding random walks which are usually referred as the birth and death chains. As an example of the results, we derive the time averaged distribution of so-called Szegedy's walk which is related to the Ehrenfest model. It is represented by Krawtchouk polynomials which is the eigenvectors of the model and includes the arcsine law.

Sensitivity of quantum walks to boundary of two-dimensional lattices: approaches from the CGMV method and topological phases

In this paper, we treat quantum walks in a two-dimensional lattice with cutting edges along a straight boundary introduced by Asboth and Edge (2015 Phys.Rev. A 91 022324) in order to study one-dimensional edge states originating from topological phases of matter and to obtain collateral evidence of how a quantum walker reacts to the boundary. Firstly, we connect this model to the CMV matrix, which provides a 5-term recursion relation of the Laurent polynomial associated with spectral measure on the unit circle. Secondly,we explicitly derive the spectra of bulk and edge states of the quantum walk with the boundary using spectral analysis of the CMV matrix. Thirdly, while topological numbers of the model studied so far are well-defined only when gaps in the bulk spectrum exist, we find a new topological number defined only when there are no gaps in the bulk spectrum. We confirm that the existence of the spectrum for edge states derived from the CMV matrix is consistent with the prediction from a bulk-edge correspondence using topological numbers calculated in the cases where gaps in the bulk spectrum do or do not exist. Finally, we show how the edge states contribute to the asymptotic behavior of the quantum walk through limit theorems of the finding probability. Conversely, we also propose a differential equation using this limit distribution whose solution is the underlying edge state.

How does Grover walk recognize the shape of crystal lattice?

We consider the support of the limit distribution of the Grover walk on crystal lattices with the linear scaling. The orbit of the Grover walk is denoted by the parametric plot of the pseudo-velocity of the Grover walk in the wave space. The region of the orbit is the support of the limit distribution. In this paper, we compute the regions of the orbits for the triangular, hexagonal and kagome lattices. We show every outer frame of the support is described by an ellipse. The shape of the ellipse depends only on the realization of the fundamental lattice of the crystal lattice in $\mathbb{R}^2$.

Partition-based discrete-time quantum walks

We introduce a family of discrete-time quantum walks, called two-partition model, based on two equivalence-class partitions of the computational basis, which establish the notion of local dynamics. This family encompasses most versions of unitary discrete-time quantum walks driven by two local operators studied in literature, such as the coined model, Szegedy's model, and the 2-tessellable staggered model. We also analyze the connection of those models with the two-step coined model, which is driven by the square of the evolution operator of the standard discrete-time coined walk. We prove formally that the two-step coined model, an extension of Szegedy model for multigraphs, and the two-tessellable staggered model are unitarily equivalent. Then, selecting one specific model among those families is a matter of taste not generality.

New theory of diffusive and coherent nature of optical wave via a quantum walk

We propose a new theory on a relation between diffusive and coherent nature in one dimensional wave mechanics based on a quantum walk. It is known that the quantum walk in homogeneous matrices provides the coherent property of wave mechanics. Using the recent result of a localization phenomenon in a one-dimensional quantum walk (Konno, Quantum Inf. Proc. (2010) 9, 405-418), we numerically show that the randomized localized matrices suppress the coherence and give diffusive nature.

Quaternionic quantum walks of Szegedy type and zeta functions of graphs

We define a quaternionic extension of the Szegedy walk on a graph and study its right spectral properties. The condition for the transition matrix of the quaternionic Szegedy walk on a graph to be quaternionic unitary is given. In order to derive the spectral mapping theorem for the quaternionic Szegedy walk, we derive a quaternionic extension of the determinant expression of the second weighted zeta function of a graph. Our main results determine explicitly all the right eigenvalues of the quaternionic Szegedy walk by using complex right eigenvalues of the corresponding doubly weighted matrix. We also show the way to obtain eigenvectors corresponding to right eigenvalues derived from those of doubly weighted matrix.

Stationary amplitudes of quantum walks on the higher-dimensional integer lattice

Stationary measures of quantum walks on the one-dimensional integer lattice are well studied. However, the stationary measure for the higher dimensional case has not been clarified. In this paper, we give the stationary amplitude for quantum walks on the d-dimensional integer lattice with a finite support by solving the corresponding eigenvalue problem. As a corollary, we can obtain the stationary measures of the Grover walks. In fact, the amplitude for the stationary measure is an eigenfunction with eigenvalue 1.

Periodicity for space-inhomogeneous quantum walks on the cycle

In this paper, we consider periodicity for space-inhomogeneous quantum walks on the cycle. For isospectral coin cases, we propose a spectral analysis. Based on the analysis, we extend the result for periodicity for Hadamard walk to some isospectral coin cases. For non-isospectral coin cases, we consider the the system that uses only one general coin at the origin and the identity coin at the other sites. In this case, we show that the periodicity of the general coin at the origin determines the periodicity for the whole system.

Stationary measures of three-state quantum walks on the one-dimensional lattice

In this paper, we consider stationary measures of discrete-time three-state quantum walks including the Fourier and Grover walks in the one-dimensional lattice. We give non-uniform stationary measures by solving the corresponding eigenvalue problem. Our new method is based on a reduced matrix, which is different from the generating function approach in our previous work. As a corollary, the Fourier walk on the cycle has a stationary measure with a periodicity.

The spectra of the unitary marix of a 2-tessellable staggered quantum walk on a graph

Recently, the staggered quantum walk (SQW) on a graph is discussed as a generalization of coined quantum walks on graphs and Szegedy walks. We present a formula for the time evolution matrix of a 2-tessellable SQW on a graph, and so directly give its spectra. Furthermore, we present a formula for the Szegedy matrix of a bipartite graph by the same method, and so give its spectra. As an application, we present a formula for the characteristic polynomial of the modified Szegedy matrix in the quantum search problem on a graph, and give its spectra.

On a property of the simple random walk on $\mathbb{Z}$

The subject of this paper is the simple random walk on $\mathbb{Z}$. We give a very simple answer to the following problem: under the condition that a random walk has already spent $α$-percent of the traveling time on the positive side $\mathbb{Z}_{\ge 0}$, what is the probability that the random walk is now on the positive side? The symmetric random walks which step $2n$-times can be decomposed in the following two ways: (1) how many times the walk steps on the positive side, (2) whether the last step is on the positive side or on the negative side. To answer the problem above, we clarify the number of the walks classified by (1) and (2). It has been already known that the distribution of the number indicated by (1) makes the arcsine law. Combining with the decomposition with respect to (2), we obtain a decomposition of the arcsine law into the Marchenko-Pastur law.
