Ferroaxial order of the monolayer ice in martyite

Ice Ih, the most stable phase of water at ambient pressure, is a stacking of the honeycomb network of water molecules H2O. What if one layer of ice is exfoliated and confined to a two-dimensional (2D) sheet? Martyite Zn3(V2O7)(OH)2 2H2O, a mineral with the honeycomb lattice of H2O in the porous framework, is an ideal system for studying such monolayer ice. Due to the geometrical frustration and 2D nature, H2O molecules are dynamically disordered at room temperature. In this study, we reveal disorder-order transitions of H2O in martyite using single-crystal x-ray diffraction (XRD). The XRD results visualize the formation of hydrogen-bonded toroidal H2O hexamers, leading to the ferroaxial order below 200 K. Combined with the molecular dynamics simulations, we discuss the formation process of the H2O hexamers and how they compromise the molecular arrangement towards lower temperatures. Our results unveil the ground state of monolayer ice, a fundamental knowledge to understand the polymorphism of H2O.

Nearly room temperature ferromagnetism in pressure-induced correlated metallic state of van der Waals insulator CrGeTe$_3$

A complex interplay of different energy scales involving Coulomb repulsion, spin-orbit coupling and Hund's coupling energy in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) material produces novel emerging physical state. For instance, ferromagnetism in vdW charge transfer insulator CrGeTe$_3$, that provides a promising platform to simultaneously manipulate the magnetic and electrical properties for potential device implementation using few layers thick materials. Here, we show a continuous tuning of magnetic and electrical properties of CrGeTe$_3$ single crystal using pressure. With application of pressure, CrGeTe$_3$ transforms from a FM insulator with Curie temperature, $T_{\rm{C}} \sim $ 66 K at ambient condition to a correlated 2D Fermi metal with $T_{\rm{C}}$ exceeding $\sim$ 250 K. Notably, absence of an accompanying structural distortion across the insulator-metal transition (IMT) suggests that the pressure induced modification of electronic ground states are driven by electronic correlation furnishing a rare example of bandwidth-controlled IMT in a vdW material.

Regular-Triangle Trimer and Charge Order Preserving the Anderson Condition in the Pyrochlore Structure of CsW$_2$O$_6$

Since the discovery of the Verwey transition in magnetite, transition metal compounds with pyrochlore structures have been intensively studied as a platform for realizing remarkable electronic phase transitions. We report the discovery of a unique phase transition that preserves the cubic symmetry of the beta-pyrochlore oxide CsW$_2$O$_6$, where each of W 5d electrons are confined in regular-triangle W3 trimers. This trimer formation is an unprecedented self-organization of d electrons, which can be resolved into a charge order satisfying the Anderson condition in a nontrivial way, orbital order caused by the distortion of WO6 octahedra, and the formation of a spin-singlet pair in a regular-triangle trimer. Electronic instability due to the unusual three-dimensional nesting of Fermi surfaces and the localized nature of the 5d electrons characteristic of the pyrochlore oxides were found to play important roles in this unique charge-orbital-spin coupled phenomenon.

High-pressure Raman study on the superconducting pyrochlore oxide Cd2Re2O7

The superconducting pyrochlore oxide Cd2Re2O7 (Tc = 1 K), which is now considered as a candidate of the spin-orbit-coupled metal, shows an inversion-symmetry-breaking structural transition at Ts1 = 200 K. Ts1 decreases with increasing pressure and disappears at around Pc = 4:2GPa, where at least four high-pressure phases with tiny structural distortions are suggested by means of powder X-ray diffraction [Yamaura PRB 2017]. We have carried out Raman scattering experiments to investigate changes in the crystal symmetry under high pressures up to 4.8 GPa. A structural transition at 1.9-3.0 GPa and the recovery of inversion symmetry above Pc are observed at 12 K.
